As an American I was shocked to hear that there were objects that only exist in Canada that us Americans have no idea about. Today I am very interested in learning about these objects that only Canadians know. If you enjoyed the video feel free to leave a comment, like, or subscribe for more!

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

Quebecer here, the can of maple syrup is opened with a botle and can opener that you use to punch a triangular shaped hole hole on each side (the first one to pour, the second one to let air bubbles escape for a more controled pour). after opening, you put it into a liquid container that can be used for pouring liquids in the traditional sense (like reusing a plastic bottle of maple syrup funnily enough). also for the queen's portrait, it is almost never hanged anywhere due to our cultural and historical heritage comming from France rather than the UK.

From the UK I am old enough to remember that until some time in the 1980 and the invention of the “ring pull”, this was the only way to open cans containing liquid,e.g. coke, Pepsi etc. As a schoolboy I always had a can puncher on my pen knife tab in my pocket.

The poppy was NOT started by an American. I live in Thunder Bay, where it all started. It was started by a French woman from France. She started it to raise funds for the French veterans and then brought it to France’s allies in 1921. The tradition has been going for over 100 years now.

Poppies are a symbol of remembrance for those Canadians lost in WW1 and 11. The reason for the poppy is because they grew between the graves of soldiers buried in France. Therefore The poem In Flanders Fields. Not many people realize that on our Canada Day celebration the people of Newfoundland actually have it as a day of remembrance. On that day the Newfoundland regiment went into battle Beaumont- Hamel WW1. Out of 800 soldiers only 68 showed up for roll call. over 700 men were killed or badly wounded. They basically walked into a blizzard of bullets at the command of the higher ups. It touched every family in Newfoundland and July 1 , Canada Day, they have a memorial at the Cenotaph in Ottawa, Ontario and i imagine definitely in Newfoundland.

Oh God, most Canadians' least favourite Canadian, JJ again. King Charles (and previously Queen Elizabeth) appears in portraits in government buildings because he is King of Canada, not because he is King of the UK. This is not uniquely Canadian. Similar portraits appear in all 14 of the independent countries of which he is king. Likewise, the poppy is a symbol of honour for lives sacrificed in war, not only in Canada, but throughout the 54 countries of the Commonwealth, and beyond.

Keep in mind that the 'no name' recipe would be basic with only the minimum flavour ingredients to call it that product. The lack of printing effort, brand advertising and "less then premium grade ingredients " are what make the price lower. In the USA, Walmart and Costco have their own cheaper "brand" which would be of a similar concept.

Perhaps that’s true of the cocoa, but some other products are definitely inferior, like cookies - Oreos for example, they’re definitely not as good. That said, if you were using NN Oreos for baking you might be able to get away with it but otherwise nope! Same could be said of canned tomatoes, they’re definitely not San Marzano tomatoes 🍅 packed in thick juice/pulp, but in this watery brine. Yuck. Really depends on the product. 1) Maple Syrup can: First off wrong can opener, you punch it like a juice can not remove the lid. The picture on the can is a Sugar Shack and it is not a winter scene rather it is an early Spring scene which is when Maple sap flows the strongest. 2) The Portrait: We are under the Canadian Royalty not the UK Royalty, it just happens to be the same person who holds the title of King/Queen of Canada. Think about your favorite actor and how many different roles they have played and you can get the idea. 3) The poppy: Not a politcal statement, it is a symbol of remembreae. We wear them to remember those who fought and died for our country. 4) Loblaws: President Choice refers to the President of the Company, whoever they currently are 5 ) His accent was overly exagerated an forced.

About the history of the poppy, it was actually started in France by Anna Guerin, not USA. It was originally a fundraising tool, but it was to rebuild the areas of France that had been damaged during WW1, not to support the veterans. Anna Guerin was inspired by the poem In Flanders Fields, which is based on the fields in Flanders France which had been barren before the Napoleonic wars, but then started sprouting poppies. It was later presented to the French allies, including the precursor of the Canadian legion, The Great War Veterans Association, and was adopted by them in 1921. The Canadian legion still uses it as a fundraising tool every year, and in Canada it is "expected" and sometimes mandatory to wear the poppy from Nov. 1st to 11th.

I sometimes wonder what rock JJ came out from under, his condescension is way over the top most of the time. No Name brand is simply a discount store brand and is usually made by one of the leading name brand sources only in a yellow package. No one is snobby enough to judge you on buying it in fact some of the brands are actually better. PC or President's Choice is a brand name chosen by the company president and does denote a generally higher quality item or more specialty as in many flavours and thicknesses of chips. You do not open the entire lid of a can, you open a spot with a can puncher and move the contents to a different vessel or cover the top again. The can is more for long term storage.

Ah yeah, a few people have already mentioned it, but anything that comes out of JJ's mouth is something you should probably double check and/or take with a grain of salt. I don't think I've ever known a Canadian familiar with his stuff that doesn't dislike him to a good degree. He also is really anti-Canadian but expresses it in really subtle ways that non-Canadians might not pick up on - eg his tone of voice when he describes our poppies as geometric, how he says there's lots of social pressure to do it instead of talking about how it's a tradition most of us feel proud to be a part of... Even the fact that rhe talks loke Americans invented the poppy symbol, when rhe lady who campaigned for that symbol to be adopted was inspired by a Canadian poem, and it was the Brits who started selling them first. But he skims iver all that history and context to put us down. I swear JJ is some kind of psy-op plant meant to undermine Canadian culture and history, lol. No Name and President's Choice stuff can be pretty darn good, though, especially for the price. As for the name... I always thought maybe it was the president of the company or something 😆 While he's correct that if you saw someone with tons of No Name foods and not much else, you might wonder if they're trying to save money, absolutely nobody will look down on you for it the way he's implying. In Québec, it's still very normal to buy a lot of maple syrup cans during the maple season, which is right now! We get like 8-12 cans directly from the surgar shack and it lasts us through the year. Unless you have a bug family brunch, you normally empty the can into a more useful container that you keep in the fridge for a few weeks or a month, until it's empty and then you refill with the next can.

Personally, as a Canadian, I'm a big fan of the British Royalty. We gather with coffee every Christmas morning to watch the Christmas address, we stay up all night to watch events like the Coronation, weddings, Jubilee's etc. Also, the poppy is a visual symbol of respect for our troops (specifically WWII) and the sacrifices made. The funds go to good causes and it's one day a year. I would say it's the very least we can do to remember our freedom was free.

Proudly wear my poppy every year. They are very lovely metal pins now. Here’s the poem & story. Every Canadian school child from my generation & before can recite and understand the beauty of this work by grade 3. Flanders Fields BY JOHN MCCRAE In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. In Flanders Fields" is a war poem written during the First World War by Canadian physician Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae. He was inspired to write it after presiding over the funeral of friend and fellow soldier Lieutenant Alexis Helmer, who died in the Second Battle of Ypres. In Flanders Fields was first published on December 8 1915 in the London magazine Punch. Flanders Fields is a common English name of the World War I battlefields in Belgium and France. It is one of the most quoted poems from the war. Its references to the red poppies that grew over the graves of fallen soldiers resulted in the remembrance poppy becoming one of the world's most recognized memorial symbols for soldiers who have died in conflict. The poem and poppy are prominent Remembrance Day symbols throughout the Commonwealth of Nations, particularly in Canada, where "In Flanders Fields" is one of the nation's best-known literary works. The poem is also widely known in the United States, where it is associated with Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

JJ's problem is he eats at McDonalds for every meal so how can he know how to use a can of Maple Syrup. Here it is for you; Using a Can punch, pop a triangular hole on top along the rim. If you didn't exist before 1990 you may need training in this technique. Then make another hole on top but slightly smaller and on the opposing side of the top from the first hole. The small hole allows air in so it pours out smoothly. This is also done for Condensed Milk and that was the creamer of choice for tea and coffee on every kitchen counter up to the 80's. But I digress. Take your now open can and pour the contents into a saucepan and heat it up on the stove. You want it hot but not scalding hot. Now pour the hot syrup into a syrup decanter for the table when the pancakes are ready to serve. You butter your pancake and then pour as much delicious nectar of the Maple over your pancake as you want, and it really should be too much every time or you are missing out. Any left overs can be kept in said decanter or a sealer jar for next use. This is the only way to really enjoy a pancake. Do not reply telling me I am wrong. Just do it! (Passive Aggressive mode off)

1) When I was a kid we had canned maple syrup. You don't open it up like a can of soup. We used an opener similar to what you'd use on a can of apple juice, one that puts a triangular piercing near the rim. Put on in for pouring and one on the other side of the can to make pouring easier. After that you'd just put cellophane over it and put it back in the fridge. If your mother sold Tupperware in the evenings like mine did, they had plastic lids that were specifically fitted for the syrup cans. 2) We are not the only people with portraits of the current monarch in public places. They're all over the commonwealth. 3) With No Name brands, most of the time the only difference is price. With some things you can taste a difference but otherwise, rice is rice. I shop at No Frills, largely b/c it's the grocery store closest to my apartment, and it's just fine.

JJ can be so frustrating!!! Anyway, in regards to the poppy, it was mentioned/shown in the Heritage Minute video about John McCrae who wrote the poem In Flanders Fields. Also Canada isn't the only country that has poppies. The UK does too, but theirs are a stiff red paper poppy, with a green plastic center & stick to put through jacket's button hole. While Canada's are like what was shown here. Poppies are also in the film The Wizard of Oz when the characters fall asleep until the snow falls & poppies are the flower used to make opium. So in this context maybe you don't know what a poppy is, but I'd be shocked if someone had never heard of a poppy at all.

In Canadian schools, all students get these on or near Nov. 11, and schools hold assemblies to remember those who gave their lives for our freedoms. On Nov. 11 at 11 AM local time, everything stops for a minute of remembrance in Canada. Never open a can of syrup like that unless you want to be seen like a barbarian, you should pop 2 holes on the sides and pour it, you can leave it open for months in a fridge with no danger, or pour it in another container. Also , No Name brand is usually pretty cheap alternatives of more common brands, but most of it is not too bad in terms of quality, especially the dry stuff like spices and such. The chips and other snacks aren't too bad either for the price marks. As for the socks thing, I'm pretty sure it would apply to a lot of winter gear and garments, it's a ''Canadian'' thing mostly because of the weather. You wouldn't wear -40C proof+ coats and gear in most American states, neither would you wear super wooly socks. Finally, the portrait thing is mostly a thing in government institutions and where Canadian patriotism is strong, let's just say it's not really a thing in many provinces, especially Quebec. The graves being dug and the shells that had landed activated the poppy seeds in the ground. While visiting his friend’s grave Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae noticed all these poppies in between the graves. He wrote the poem inspired by these poppies. The poem was found in his pocket after his death. Thank you Dr McCrae. I was raised on Air Force Bases. I still recite the poem. My parents were both in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Not everything this guy said is right. By the way, the Queen/King IS Canada's monarch too. We are a Constitutional Monarchy here in Canada. I'm not sure about the majority of Canadians being anti-monachist but there probably are more since the Queen's death. Growing up the Queen's portrait was in all government buildings. At school we sang O Canada to open Assemblies and God Save the Queen to close them. (this was a few decades ago for me so I have no idea what they do today). The poppy is worn to remember those who fought and died for our freedom...not to show you're "pro veteran". They are meant to be pinned on on the last Friday in October and worn until Rememberance Day (November 11th). They are also used in memorial or funeral services for our military veterans. As for tinned maple syrop, I have seen it some but in my part of Canada (New Brunswick) mostly it comes in bottles or jugs...either way...YUMMMMM! NO Name...a lower grade of food/products than major brands...and if you go to most Loblaws stores in our area you can find it on shelves along with President's Choice and major brands to. (the president in question would be the president of the Loblaws group) In short I wouldn't take everything this guy had to say...just my opinion. Cheers from New Brunswick, Canada (eh) 🇨🇦

No, actually, it was created by an American. For some reason it never caught on there like in the Commonwealth countries (possibly because their equivalent holiday, Memorial Day, is in May and you can sometimes find veterans selling "buddy poppies" around that time)

Loblaws used to own a chain of stores in the states called National Foods. (Flip the Loblaws insignia upside down and it turns from an "L" to an "N". That was National's Insignia.) They used to carry No Name and President's Choice branded foods. I have many fond memories of some No Name products, actually. Despite them being cheap, there were many that were quite good.
