If you hadn't had said this was an OFAH knock off, I would never had guessed, it has no resemblance to the original at all. This version of Del is awful, zero class. I mean, would Del pull out a sock full of coins at the bar? Never! Del may not have any class, but he likes to pretend he does, Del is a lovable rogue. this guy was an unlikable con man.
Imagine an alien watched five minutes of Only Fools, went to ChatGPT and entered the only knowledge it had and asked it to write an episode based on that. It would still be ten times funnier than this abomination
The laughter track reminded me of my first time seeing a US sitcom as a kid. "Mum, why is everyone laughing? Noone said anything funny". "I don't know son". 😆
Agreed. When I first watched M*A*S*H on the BBC they seemed to have a version without the laughter track. Poignant moments were poignant, we provided the laughter for the comedic moments. I recently found the program again on the higher channel numbers of digital telly. I managed about ten minutes before I was so irritated I had to turn over the channel.
I agree, the Red Dwarf pilot was worse but “bonnet de douche” that was awful. There was a glimmer of potential but the one dimensional, shouty acting was unbearable. David, Nicholas & Lennard (and later, Buster Merrifield) felt like a real like family from the very first episode. You can’t fake on screen chemistry, which the original cast had in spades.
Christopher Lloyd was a highlight in this dumpster fire. The only real link to the original was the character names - as you pointed out, no-one even felt like they were related!
Agree 100% - the original main characters had very little physical resemblance but were still so believable as a real family. You could tell they’d been through some tough, emotional times together and that Del was trying his best to improve their lot.
"Grey Is The New Black", "It's Always Funny in Aberystwyth", "Stranger Prawn Rings", "Hudders-feld", "Everybody Tolerated Jimmy". I'll be here all week 😅
Remember hearing about this, i never knew they actually filmed a pilot for it. Looks as bad as any of us expected it to be. This show is so disconnected from the original you wouldnt tell its a OFAH imitation unless you were told, its more like a generic american sitcom from the early 2000s
In 2010 Steve Carell wanted to play Del Boy in US remake of Only Fools & Horses. He also suggested Ricky Gervais as Mike, Paul Rudd as Rodney, Ben Stiller (in make up) as Grandad and Vince Vaughn as Boycie. 4:23 A bad remake mentioning the respected remake of a British sitcom. 11:03 Trigger's real name is Colin Ball in the proper version. 22:30 It's Eugene from The Walking Dead.
I hope they also find the version of this which includes the lines which made the audience laugh. It would have been much better if they had kept the gags in the show.
This is a insult to John Sullivan’s and the shows legacy Though I’ll give it this, John Leguizamo can almost pull off the confidence and charisma that del is meant to have and at least they didn’t do a shot to shot remake of the first episode like the IT crowd or the office, though that might of worked better John Leguizamo and Christopher Lloyd are decent casting if the script was actually funny and enjoyable, I honestly see potential in this it was a lot more funnier and the casting was a bit better.
It works both ways. In the 90s the UK decided to do it's own version of the golden girls called "the Brighton belles". Oh it was big fat hairy bollocks. X
Oh God, I remember that & it being pulled halfway through it’s run. I really wanted to like it as it was so well cast but it was abysmal and a very poor imitation of the original.
Christopher Llyod was doing all sort's of low budget productions at this time, for example he was in a cbbc show in the 2000's called "I dream" which was basically a British rip off of High School Musical where they all suddenly burst into song! I can't remember if Christopher Llyod sang but it's definitely worth checking out because of how bad it was lol
In fairness, the characters are actually decent for an American adaptation. Just the writing (especially compared to the legendary OFAH), set and feel of it is just pure American boring sitcom vibes
It being a version of 'Fools, doesn't seem so bad, due to how abstract it is from the original. - The thing I found most grating was the way it tried to get all of the exposition and character backstories, all the gags and one-liners into the first few minutes!
You know what makes this worse, the timer in the corner reminding you how long you have had to suffer through watching this. Americans really should just stop trying to remake British shows. Even weird all the characters seem to be different races yet all supposedly related lol
This only fails as hard as it does, when you know it's a OFAH rip-off. Without that awareness, it's a pretty standard or certainly below par US sitcom, depending on your tastes. Same sort of jokes. It baffles why they try these sorts of things when the styles are just so completely incompatible with one another.
I take my hat off to all Americans who get British comedy after seeing remakes off American Red dwarf I feel for you that aside you spawned 3 of the greatest shows ever in bilko mash and cheers
@@gingerben9310 Yh fr it pissed me off when he said that. the UK one is special for a reason and that is bc the comedy was original and perfect but yh ur right that guy don’t know comedy if it slapped then in the face
Wait, Doc Brown played Grandad in Only Fools & Horses? Please tell me this wasn't our reality... Did Biff steal the DeLorean again, and was that some kind of _alternative_ timeline? 😬
Of course, but it's like if Baywatch was remade in the UK, it'd be ridiculous to Americans. The reason OFAH was such a great show to us is that it's of a specific time and place, with deep-rooted cultural familiarity.. Noah seems to enjoy it, but I wouldn't expect many Americans to really get it in the way that people who grew up in the UK get it. In fact, I wouldn't expect them to find it even remotely funny, and I understand why. Noah's kind of an exception as, at this point, he's probably seen as much UK TV as we have. 😂 BTW, I'm not saying Baywatch was great TV or anything, only that it can't really be set anywhere (or any when) else.
Well, it started mediocre and went downhill from there... This is like getting Dan Aykroyd for a US remake of Fawlty Towers and filling it with Ghostbusters references! What were they thinking?? And yeah, having Wendi McLendon-Covey on this is just a waste (she's great in Reno 911!)
Wendi McLendon-Covey (the bartender) was especially good in "Rules Of Engagement" as an unhinged character obsessed with comedian David Spade's character called Russell
Oof. This was dire. I've seen worse, but this was just a whole lot of generic American pad-the-schedule-with-something (except it never managed that) sitcom that tries to fire out as many gags as it can but none of them land. A quick subtle Back to the Future reference would've been fine, but they really kept hammering it in. The whole thing was just unfunny and it felt like it went on FOREVER. The only decent parts of it were Christopher Lloyd who always tries his best, and Wendi McLendon-Covey who I love from The Goldbergs.
Oh my goodness, I wasn't ready for this... How can they do THAT to Grandad (my fav Only Fools character). I was wondering when your next Only Fools episode would be, but wasn't expecting.. whatever this is! The weird thing is it... 'KIND OF' followed the plot of the first episode (Rodney going it alone), only they replaced the 25 briefcases that have no code with a monster truck.
No way can’t believe someone found this should be burned in pits of hell. But saying that some of jokes where sort of funny but my opinion they over reference back to future bit to much. I am glad network decided not to go through with this.
Wow, what a way to not understand what made the writing of only fools and horses so good was the brotherly emotion between the two characters, also american del was kind of right for an American adaption but American Rodney wasn't the right personality at all.
Coupling was meant to be the uk friends, and that was excellent! It didn’t try to copy friends though, and it had Jeff so all was well. Jeff is one of my favourite characters from any tv show ever 😂
As a HUGE fan of Only Fools and Horses, I feel as though I MUST endure watching this. It's like attempting to withstand a Nuke to show British resilience for one of Britain's greatest sitcoms. Saying that though, even though this isn't making me laugh, it's honestly not too bad of an attempt. One crucial ingredient that's missing is the Cockney Slang. Part of the charm is how silly Cockney Slang sounds and yet it's being used seriously like it's literally Dels born language. I think I know the main problem. OFAH is VERY British. This is VERY American and let's be perfectly honest here, American comedy CANNOT step a toe over the line. American Humor holds itself back in a way, when British Humor doesn't mind rocking boats. My one favorite line was "Could you please take a few steps back? I can see your heartbeat".
If they’re Latino, why are they called Trotter? Maybe it’s spelled Trotta? This isn’t the worst sitcom I’ve ever seen, it’s just unfortunate that it was inevitably compared to the UK original. It’s just gags and one-liners rather than any sort of character development.
This would never work, as with most Brit comedy its about failure and Americans don't like failure, loveable losers. The flat is too big for a start! Thank God now remakes are kinda pointless, we can all just watch each others stuff. Not sure I xan endure even half an hour of this tbh!
These characters are nothing like Del Boy and Rodney but they're really familiar, I feel like I've seen these characters a million times before. For what they're going for, I think the casting is pretty spot on and it would've been interesting if this came to fruition. Still, it's got nothing on Only Fools.
This was o.k. I’ve seen the first two scenes before, the idea of mixing trigger with mickey pierce and boycie was wierd. The del character made sense, the Rodney hair was too strange and the jokes were few, doing a back to the future gag in thee first episode is too soon, that’s a second or third season thing, just ruined and cheapened it. O.k though. Not the worst I’ve seen that goes to married for life, the uk remake of married with children.
Like so many sitcoms the laugh track ruins it, otherwise I don't think it was any worse than other US sitcoms I've seen, there was a US version of 'On The Buses' called 'Lotsa Luck' which is *much* worse. I would dispute that OFAH was even the best Brit sitcom never mind the best ever show, I consider it vastly overrated & like 'Fawlty Towers' ( also overrated ) owes its beloved place in people's hearts due to constant repeats turning both shows into 'national institutions'. 'Dad's Army', another national institution, is vastly superior writing & characterisation wise & another sitcom that was remade for US tv, a pilot was made & proved unsuccessful.
You know what? That wasn't irredeemably terrible. I can see what they were going for, they had Americanised equivalents of a lot of the original OFAH elements, they had a bit of fun with the self referential BTTF jokes, but the giant robot dinosaur sort of spoiled the goodwill they had generated.
Maybe if they changed the names (more) and made it so people can't tell it's American OFAH, it might have had a better chance. It's the connection TO OFAH that is its own downfall.
Christopher Lloyd played the best character in a 70s sitcom called "Taxi" and he did this? He deserved way better. The story line is nothing like the first episode, no offence to you Taffe but America always seems to ruin our best shows by changing so much about it. This episode and the shows Shameless & The Office were not great for many of us in the UK to watch. If they were gonna include a DeLorean in this then someone should have called Del a sloth as a reference to Ice Age
This somehow feels more like a knockoff Drake and Josh than an adaptation of OFAH, its a long way from the first localised adaptation of ofah, I understand its been quite successful in a number of foreign language adaptations
It’s a shame, this had potential but the script just plain sucks. Oh and OFAH is NOT better than Blackadder or Red Dwarf and I will DIE on that hill!! 😂
