Just like Friends is so American, there's something so British about this wonderful series. Even when you have watched several times, you still have a good laugh!

I’m glad it’s not too old fashioned for you. Life used to be a lot slower in those days but the hub of our community was the corner shop where all the gossip was passed and everyone knew each other. Incidentally this actual shop where they filmed this show was not many streets away from where I grew up in Doncaster. It’s location is quite famous (well in Doncaster lol)

i have grown up raised very old fashioned in a lot of the things i approach. and community aspect is very huge in my growing up and feeling apart of a community in my youth was huge for me. so i love the shop gossip i find it all interesting imo

I've been waiting all day for this! The sound of milk bottles being put into the crates on the back of a milk float takes me back a few years. The shop bike features in some of the funniest scenes of this show in episodes to come. Those were the fish fingers that Arkwright wrapped in the newspaper.

Year's after this was made they did a follow up series called 'Still Open All Hours". The actor Ronnie Barker had died and Granville was now running the shop with Leroy as his assistant. Nurse Gladys was still in it as were some of the regular customers from this series. It may be worth checking it out later.

It was as funny as the Porridge remake, worth checking out just to see how these timeless gems can be turned into turds. Rock and chips was so bad it made my teeth itch.

@@johnadams1147 Rick and Chips was really a comedy drama rather than a sitcom - it's more subtle and was intended to give some background to Delboy' s past. Unfortunately only 3 episodes were made as John Sullivan died before he had a chance to develop the characters.

My mate used to live in Nurse Gladys' house in Doncaster. I once spent the night in her bedroom! This was a good 25 years after the show mind!

Ronnie Barker probably the UK most favorite TV comedic actor for at least 50 years. Especially with the Two Ronnies, Open All Hours and Porridge. Porridge the prison comedy has never had another UK prison comedy to beat it.

The till only snaps when they put notes under the spring clips, that's why it closed okay when Arkwright took the coins out.

If you like this show you should check out 'Last of the Summer Wine' also written by Roy Clarke. It ran for something like 18 series over about 20 years. It was the world's longest running sitcom ( think it still holds the record ). It's about 3 old retired men and their madcap adventures in a Yorkshire village.

the till didn't close funny because its the faulty spring-clip that holds down the pound notes(dollar bills) that causes it. also, that black car is actually a 1970s hearse. the room in the back is for the coffin.

A lot of the items in the shop are blurred out because they are real products and tv comnpanies cannot show the clearly in production for risk of being guilty of endorsing a product or covert advertising.

In the UK has become part of normal language for people of a certain age when using a machine or device that is unpredictably dangerous to one's fingers to shout "Fvck me!!! That's worse than Arkwright's bloody till!
