Even yanks don't call it a Big Mac sandwich, because it has beef patties in it. You should have compared it to a McChicken burger, then your comment would make sense.
@@bluedog1052 makes perfect sense to me because that’s how it works over here. Sandwiches have bread burgers have buns, regardless of what meat is in between.
Sandwich has sliced bread, wraps have flat wrap bread, burgers and rolls have buns, depending on if you put hot or cold meat in it will determine if your eating a burger or a bun roll
It is also what some people call chips. I doubt many people do as I havent heard it as an adult, but like growing up as a kid, id call hot chips 'chippies' haha. Guess whats why the first woman called them that
Never heard of it either. If you ask me, we don’t need anymore American 🇺🇸 fast food chains here. I don’t want us to be as fat as Americans are. Not a good thing/look.
Portugese chicken is peri-peri chicken..it is marinated in either the spicy sauce, or a lemon/herb sauce, then cooked on a grill which gives even more flavour.
You're thinking of Nando's which is Afro-Portuguese. "Peri Peri" is a Nando's term the spice is actually "Piri Piri". Piri Piri was first farmed in South Africa by Portuguese explorers who eventually cultivated it for Portugal.
In Australia, the fast food is no longer fast, and not cheap. Another good Aussie original fast food is Guzman Y Gomez (tex mex). Oporto food is delicious.
Ryan Ryan Ryan ... how many times do we have to tell you? 😆 In Australia, the filling between buns makes a burger, and the filling between slices of bread makes a sandwich 😊
That 5-Guys sounds like 'Burger Urge'. $15 for one hamburger? Um, f**k that! For $25 I can make six bacon egg and cheese burgers which are almost identical to a Burger Urge burger, except they taste better.
The first time I came across Oporto’s, they only sold Portuguese style BBQ chickens - whole flat, half flat and by the piece. It was delicious! After a few years, I was put on a low sodium diet and that put an end to all fast foods. “Oporto's first restaurant was founded in 1986 by António Cerqueira, an Australian of Portuguese descent, in North Bondi, New South Wales, Australia, but was originally named Portuguese-Style Bondi Charcoal Chicken. The 'Oporto' name came from Cerqueira's favourite football team, FC Porto.”
From that Bondi restaurant came the now-famous 'Bondi Burger'. There's still today an Oporto at 152 Campbell Parade Bondi Beach, directly across the road from one of the most famous sand beaches on the planet... but if you're ever in that part of the world I suggest you go looking for Hong Ha Bakery (just around the corner from Oporto, in Roscoe Street) and grab yourself one of the best Vietnamese banh mi rolls you'll ever eat.
@djshotty I'm gonna play devils advocate and throw an honourable mention to frangos in petersham, they still do the flat whole birds and qtrs, chips salad all the jazz
Never had Oportos - we have Nando's as well. You could seriously try a different ethnic food or type of dish every day for months. We do a lot pizza, Mexican, Greek, Italian, multiple Asian foods. So many choices. You are just going to have to visit and try them all.
You missed your chance: "Oporto opened their first store in the United Kingdom at London's Victoria Station in January 2009, although this store closed on 18 October 2011, and they opened their first restaurant in the United States in Rancho Cucamonga, California, on 25 February 2011. Oporto stores in the United States were all converted to Feisty Chicken Grill in 2013. There are now over 100 stores in operation in Australia and New Zealand. Oporto has three types of Oporto store types: drive-thru, shopping centre, and strip store." Wikipedia.
😋Gosh, this video made me drool on my phone! I love mediterranean tasting food, just never had it as fast food, but chili sauce, chicken tenders, churros with salted caramel… Mmmmhhh. Sounds so good.
I can't speak to five guys in PARIS, no offense to the french. if it's not 5 greasy american dudes behind the counter, your experience may vary. it is WAY pricey though
You have to remember how different the fast food brands are in Australia. Both McDonalds and Hungry Jacks (Burger King) sell Wagyu Beef Burgers. The Chicken here is much better, and KFC do actual chips rather than those silly fat sticks that Maccas calls fries. Honestly the base chicken across all the burger franchises (or should I say Chicken Sandwich, since US people don't get we call anything between buns a burger, and anything in plain bread a sandwich) is excellent and mostly comes from Steggles or Inghams who both have very good quality control. Specifically for Oporto's, I usually only go when they have a special menu item. This seems a bit strange, since their base menu is honestly really good, but they're not that common a chain so it's usually a bit of a hike to get to a place they're at for me, or they're in huge shopping centres which I usually avoid as much as I can. If I'm doing an interstate flight, they're usually at the airport, so that's about the only time I get an Oporto's hit.
My wife is first generation Australian from Portuguese heritage and her parents family friends started Oportos in Australia before it was franchised. Its okay. But anyone who knows good Portuguese food in Sydney will know all about Frangos - the original in Pertersham. IFYKYK.
We have Five Guys in Penrith, Sydney. For almost $30 for a burger, fries and drink combo I would rather save my money and go to Oporto. Nothing to rave about except maybe the bottomless drinks. It was hyped up so much that you couldn’t get in the place and now it’s virtually empty everyday.
Not sure you'll see this one. But in the honour of the Olympic season, I'd love to see your reaction to some older vids of Roy and HG Nelson's The Dream. It's a sports commentator style show wher they did reviews of performances and similar during Sydney's 2000 Olympic.
Churros should be crispy outside, fluffy inside. Had a Spanish mother-in-law who made them, served with a hot chocolate custard for dipping. **chef's kiss**
I love Oporto chicken burgers. They sell single fillet, double, and triple. I do the double which is juuussst right. The chilli sauce which is essentially peri peri sauce. So look up that sauce and you’ll get a good idea of the taste. They also flatten the whole chicken out and roast over charcoal whilst brushing with peri peri sauce. Pretty damn good
Nope. In Portuguese, e (when taking the main stress) is pronounced as in café. So /prego/ ‘pray-go’ (or /pregu/ ‘pray-goo’) is closer to the Portuguese pronunciation. (It’s a creamy barbecue sauce.)
Yum, love the Oportos chicken tenders and burgers. Very tasty. Also love Nando's, which you may have heard of before, and also a popular Portuguese chicken restaurant in Australia.
Love oportos. Shout out to Adelaide has been voted one of the best places in the world 🌍 Also kangaroo island has one of best beaches. Sydney, Melbourne and Queensland are not happy. He he he I would say Perth is pretty nice too. Adelaide South Australia 🦘🦘🦘🌏🌏🌏
The OG chilli sauce mixed with their mayo is the best chip dip you will ever find. Hands down. It cuts the heat slightly and makes it creamy. SOOOOOO GOOD.
Love Kentucky chips ,the salt is good. The local charcoal chicken is the best even though it's more expensive. We don't always shorten everything, we often add to words too😅
FYI we do have ketchup sauce in Australia it’s just that not many people have grown up on it.The two sauces are very different. Tomato Sauce is more acidic whereas Ketchup is sweeter.
To put the price into context, Maccas tries to charge similar and still serves you cardboard. Oporto's price has been steadily rising but so has all fast food and for that matter food in general in Aus.
Oportos is amazing. Originally started off as just 1 Portuguese chicken shop, in North Bondi many years ago and now they are everywhere. A true Aussie success story 👏 👏
The Australian Hamburger is over 100 years old. It comprises beef, friend egg, bacon, lettuce, tomato, beetroot as well as cheese. Greek immigrants introduced it in the many milk bars (equivalent to US diner) that they opened. Its contents reflected the availability of ingrediens in Australia rather than any Greek tradition. And the bun was special. It was large and crunchy. Following the American fast food invasion fifty plus years ago, the great Australian Hamburger has become rare and much harder to get.
🇦🇺💙💛✌ 🇺🇦 I confess, I have never heard of Oportos but then I have been living under a rock for decades and very rarely eat any fast food at all. Even though I do live on the outskirts of Melbourne, it is still too far away from Melton for delivery. However, I grew up in Rhodesia, right next door to Mozambique which was still a Portuguese colony. There were many Portuguese food outlets in Salisbury, well known for Piri-Piri (very hot chilli/ other spices/lemon or garlic huge prawns (flown in from Beira) and garlic/Piri-Piri "grilled" chicken. I doubt that it was healthy food even though it wasn't deep fried, it was swimming in oil, which in hindsight could have been olive oil as Mozambique did have olive trees and cashew nuts grew wild.
Churros are basically donut batter piped into long fingers, fried then dipped in sugar, usually cinnamon sugar. In Australia they're usually served with either dulce de leche (a kind of caramel sauce) or a chocolate dipping sauce. I doubt the dulce de leche is particularly traditional in commercial chains.
We serve ours with a house made hazelnut chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream. Churros rolled in cinnamon sugar. But the plate is a long rectangle so it doesn't play well with others.
As an Aussie, I unashamedly LOVE Oporto. Never head of Five Guys (I live in Sydney). As a lover of Mexican takeaway I'll also say that Taco Bell still exists here in a few locales.. But there are also two excellent local chains that specialize in Mexican takeaway - 'Mad Mex' and 'Guzman Y Gomez'. GyG even sells some Mexican soft drinks. Good feeds to be had from both.
In the early 1980s there was a Taco Bell company in NSW, with an Auburn and a George Street, Sydney location. I don't know where else. They weren't associated with the Taco Bell in the US, though. The Auburn Store failed, but the George St. store lasted a little longer. Their food was actually quite nice -- a lot nicer that Guzman y Gomez -- but they had a crazy promotion, a kind of two for one voucher. We had four kids and our youngest could barely get her hand over the top of the counter, but, by each of us going in individually, we accumulated vouchers to the point that we were giving them away and paying about $5 for Sunday lunch for six ourselves. It was my wife who saw the loopholes, so if they went bust as a result of that promotion, I blame her. We had a distinctively painted Ford Transit, and, when we pulled in to the carpark, the staff would line up, watching us come in. We were usually the first of the Sunday lunch customers, a few minutes before midday.
@@silverstreettalks343 There is still a TB in Sydney, on Broadway near Central Station, and another next to Chatswood Station. No idea as to others. Both seem very understaffed, especially as regards clean-up..
I LOVE Oporto! It's one of the few fast food places I still buy from. Also, the Prego sauce is one of my favourite sauces ever (it's better than the Big Mac sauce, and that's a pretty hard sauce to be better than). The churros are also pretty good (not as good as San Churro, but still better than churros I've had from other burger places like Pattysmiths).
Ry, I have never tried Oportos (we don't have one in Mount Gambier, South Australia). Aussies are the best at Hamburgers with the lot (beef, bacon, cheese, lettuce, grilled onion, tomato, egg and beetroot and tomato sauce, bbq sauce and mayo - some people like it with pineapple but not on my watch 😉). Hugs from Oz
Peri peri sauce comes from Portugal. That takes grilled chicken somewhere magical. Oh, and along with chicken salt on the chips, (sorry, fries). That along with a fresh green salad completes the main course, followed by Aussie coffee and two or three Portuguese custard tarts. What's not to love about that?
Lemon & herb sauce from Oporto has always been my favourite. And I loved the snack wraps for $3 back when I was broke but Macca's did those too and so did Hungry Jacks. I love chicken haha
Oporto = O Porto = The Port. Porto is a city in Portugal. Prego, in Portuguese, means nails. The ones used in construction. Idk why the sauce is called that, tho.
Our fried potato 'chips' kick the living snot out of ANYTHING an American fast food joint could ever serve... and Oporto has THE BEST CHIPS! Next best 'chain store' chips are at Hungry Jacks (our version of Burger King). Maccas fries are crap, KFC chips are never anything better than soggy cardboard... but for a chicken burger and chips Oporto rule!
I’ve never taken to HJ’s chips, although the ones in the new store here are better. I used to prefer KFC’s but they seem overcooked &soggy these days. Maccas’ are pretty good while they’re really hot, but that doesn’t last long. The best apart from fish’n’chip shop are Red Rooster. Corner store chips? YUM!
@@judithstrachan9399 It's got as much to do with the type of potato used and how they're prepared as it does with how hot the oil is, how fresh the oil is and the kind of oil those chips are actually cooked in.
Originally, we didn't have proper "5 Guys" franchises in Australia, but rather pop-up stores that many US companies use to maintain trademarks in other countries without intending to establish a permanent presence. Due to the incredible popularity of these pop-ups, "5 Guys" eventually opened stores here-three at last count. I regularly travel to the US and make a point to visit "5 Guys" and In-N-Out when I'm in a location that has them.
Yes we have Five Guys but the prices are ridiculous Five Guys - Five Guys - Penrith ; Bacon Cheeseburger. Popular. $24.50 ; Cheeseburger. Popular. $21.50 ; Regular Fries. Popular. $9.50 ; Large Fries. Popular. $11.90 next to them you have McDonald's launches $6.95 McSmart Meal Choice of 2 small burgers Cheeseburger | Chicken ‘n’ Cheese Includes 1x Small Fries 1x Small Soft Drink peace out.
Sucks being in regional NSW, I have fast food, like maccas, hungry jacks, kfc, Taco Bell, dominos and subway and even an drive thru coffee Zarraffas, but the closest Oporto to me is over the border into QLD which is an hour and half’s drive for me 😓
I have eaten at a lot of burger shops. 'Grilled' is the best burger shop hands down, the chips are 10/10. There is only 1 other shop that comes close and that's the Lot burger at a fish and chip shop. Both are a 100% need to try when in Australia.
We call the bun a Burger Bun, thus when you put chicken on it it becomes a chicken Burger. If it was just between 2 slices of bread it would be a sandwich. If you have a beef patty and put it on a burger bun it is a Beef Burger.
I've tried O Porto a couple of times and was very disappointed, a large chips is 12 soggy little chips in the bottom of the box when I asked about it the guy looked amazed that I wanted more 😅
There might be a 5-guys somewhere in the country. But I've never seen one. I'm guessing they have a few stores in Sydney or something in the American tourist areas? There is a difference between Ketchup and Tomato sauce. Even the fast-food versions. Mostly the amount of sugar involved. (Ketchup is HUGE on the sugar). Oportos was founded in NSW Australia, in 1986. It's served in Aus, NZ and the United Arab Emirates. Listed target foods are: "Chicken products, burgers, wraps, salads, sides and desserts"
I was shocked when you said we had "5 guys", I was like, WTH is "5 guys". Then I looked it up and with only 3 stores in Aus, it's no wonder I had never heard of them!
Look, As a self appointed 65 year old Australian burger expert. The best burgers come from a local take away shop. They have always been the best place to get a burger. Take 1 large white burger bun toast lightly on the outside and dark and crispy on the inside. Butter the bun. 1 large beef patty, 1cm thick maximum. Diameter of the bun. Cook well throw a slice of cheese on the beef patty just before removing from the grill allow cheese to melt. Add chopped lettuce to the bun bottom half this protects the bread from becoming soggy. Then the beef patty with cheese the grilled onions, then lightly with tomato sauce, then tomato preferable 2 slices, then beetroot 1 large slice or 2 small slices. If adding an egg cook the egg on the grill and break the yolk and once one side is cooked flip and cook the other side add the egg to the patty and cheese whilst on the grill. The trick is not to make the bun soggy. A well toasted bun and lettuce as well as minimal sauce protect the burger from becoming soggy. Bacon and grilled pineapple ring are optional extras. That all there is to it. Perfect. The engineering and construction order of the burger is to individual preference but i like bottom to top bun base, butter, lettuce, beef patty, cheese, onion, egg, sauce, tomato, well drained beetroot. Buttered bun top. Pineapple ring after lettuce. Bacon after beef patty.
We have a chain called "Betty's Burgers" too. They do an excellent grilled chicken burger. I just get the burger and a juice, no chips. and it is filling enough and higher quality/ lower kj's than Maccas or HJ's.
I’ve looked at a Betty’s Burgers but the prices scared me away. For that kind of price, I’d rather go to a corner-shop type of place & get a proper one.
about 25-30 years go, we used to get 'chicken rib" We had NO idea what it was. It was like a small chicken tender on a bone. AND its just not oporto's, unless you got it at bondi, and ate it on the beach
Why would prego sauce be a strange thing to say in the US? Prego simply means "nail" and is used in this context to indicate that there's a lot of garlic nailed into the sauce. Btw, Nando's is also Portuguse/S African and has almost as many outlets in Australia as Oportos: 140 Nando's, 200 Oportos.
@@MsLouisez true, though to an American it would only mean pregnant, while aussies talking about Oporto would understand this other use of the word, so there’d be no confusion caused.
@@nerdyfellow7740 I would say that most Australians have not been to a Oporto, and don't know about this sauce. The restaurant looks to have more of a presence on the NSW coast. I looked it up due to this video and found there was one 20km away, although it doesn't have good reviews. No one has ever mentioned the word Oportos to me. Nando's / KFC / Maccers / subway are more dominate.
@@MsLouisez mate we both know what preggo means to the vast majority of Aussies. The first commenter asked why prego would be considered inappropriate, suggesting they didn’t o or what the word meant at all, so I told them the only meaning it would have to an American. To an Australian, who knows about Oporto, the word would have two meanings. As I said before, two Aussies who are having a chat about Oporto would know the second meaning, so the phrase “prego sauce” would not be strange to them. But maybe to an American or Aussie who only knows the common usage, as Ryan said, it would raise some eyebrows.
My go to order is the Haloumi and Chicken burger with added bacon. Love the garlic sauce or the Prego with chips. When I want to sleep in a carb coma I'll even order the Churro's!
my order is a halloumi chicken wrap, and chips. The wrap is so underated it's not like a salad type it's almost like imagine a burger and a burrito mixed together. Then I normally get churros for dessert. Does anyone remember the POTATO BALLS, they stopped selling them YEARS ago like ima goes 2016 but they were my favourite and I was so so sad
We ,poor, bought chips wrapped in paper.( I liked mine with dark vinegar...but some people like white vinegar and some like tomato.or barbecue sauce. They were cheap and large amounts back then(1960's and 70's
Never heard of Porto's, if I ever get over to the coast & see one , might give it a go. The only KFC near me is 65 km away (so maybe 2 or 3 times a year) I only get a 3 piece feed (3 pieces of original chicken, small chips, mashed potato & gravy & a teny tiny diner roll (never eat the dinner roll) The mashed potato is supposed to be an ice cream scoop of mash topped with gravy, I like to stir the mash & gravy & scoop it out with the chips, the second last time all I got was gravy no mash, & last Saturday all I got was a teaspoon of mash & gravy (not happy)😢 As for Macca's in town 6 km away 2 or 3 times a year & every time I don't get what I ordered 🤬 at the pickup window the last time I yelled, "EVERY F*****G TIME I COME HERE, MY ORDER IS F****D UP,!!!!
I'm not sure whats going on as I noticed also on their website not many branches around, but I was sure I've seen it around, but haven't taken much notice. SO I did a google search and found a lot more, and close to me.
Yumis( brand name) hommos is yum and they make many nibktrs... lentil and zucchini...pumpkin and sweet potato..No preservatives...Many other flavours... Honestly yum
