@@AshleysReview the royal marine bands are band first and marine second. they are very important to the structure to the commando force. their war role is as medics. thier course as members of a band is a long one. they are the best we have in uk and that is coming from me as RAF

The pride you have when marching in your best uniform on parade with the pipes and drums playing. Sends goosebumps down the spine. Even Sgt Majors with decades experience, still feel that same goosebumps feeling. I'm so proud to have been part of that tradition, as a former member of the British Army. Well done bootnecks. I'm proud to be ex British Army Veteran. Now a 50yr old Disabled British Army Veteran. Ps Drumline us a great movie.

Bless you. Of course we're not offended. It's just an English thing. The audience will normally react when they stop playing and not during. Yes we're very proud of our Royal Guards/ Marines.

As a British person I could never find your excitement offensive, anyone who does is a bit of a numpty tbh. 😅 Yes I'd say I'm proud of the drum corps, they are some of the msot talented service men and women we have. 💚 But many other nations are extremely talanted too tbf. We (as a nation) tend to get very rowdy at music gigs and festivals. 😅 I think the reason the crowds a bit muted is unlike other kinds of music when you see drum corps perform a big part of the performance is how the silence is punctuated by the percussion of the drums, so when the crows is noisy the emphasis and sharpness of the audio and the performance drops. The crowd still go wild (within reason haha) at certain moments when they suddenly demonstrated a difficult trick. 🤘

It is more respectful to not be noisy imo. If all the audience were noisy it would take away from the performance as people might not be able to hear it the way it was intended. I think it's fine to sit there in awe, clap occasionally and cheer a little but then save all your applause etc. for when the performance is over. A rowdy crowd would spoil this. This isn't a rock concert :)

Yes it's disrespectful to start shouting while they are playing. If you did that when the royal marines were playing in Britain you would be chucked out. It's the way we do things.

Love your reactions I have in the “Fam” for awhile now. I am a former Royal Marines bandsmen, I was in the audience at this concert and yes it was amazing. Total respect to the Top Secret drum corps they are amazing they are not military and do this in the spare time! The tradition of beating the retreat goes back hundred’s of years when drums were used to signal to soldiers to return from the battle field at the end of the day. Military bands have to keep within the constraints of the traditions, however over recent years it’s been acceptable to introduce small changes and new routines the times. This display made a number of big changes.This drum battle was tense and the crowd erupted at the end, an amazing display . I am glad you enjoyed at shared it with the Fam.

The difference in drum sound is created by different snare systems. The Swiss are using dual snares, one stretched beneath the batter head and one beneath the resonant head, (Scots, American, Canadian etc military bands use this method) giving a very rat-a-tat sound. The RMCoD have snare wires stretched beneath the resonant head only, which a more tonal sound.

The6 are amazing. In my younger days I played snare drums in a marching band. We were British champions 5 years in a row. We used to march play & do exactly the bending over & play the guy next to us. I was 14 at 5he time taped 11 years loved every minute. So when ever I see guys like this it sends goose.

I seen them at the Tatoo in the late 00’s, I think it was their debut performance there and they apart from the massed pipes and drums were the stars of the show

I've been at a few similar live performances and a lot of the time there's some tension in the air, like when someone is performing a high wire act, and everyone's kind of holding their breath. Its like no-one wants to be the one to distract them and put them off their stride. Then when they hit some easy bits or transitions etc you get the big cheers going up, like there were here, then they get all focused again for their next main bit and everyone in the crowd feels it and tightens up and quietens down again :)

There’s something about military music that gets into you, the drums are almost primeval seem to draw on the depths of your soul, I’m English but I have to admit that watching massed pipes marching playing ‘Scotland the Brave’ is something to behold, there’s a swagger about it.

I usually see them do this while also marching. The Edinburgh Royal Military Tattoo has the Swiss drummers most years. It's easy to find online.

The royal navy drummers are using snare drums which have a set of springs strung across the drum underneath these can be either used against the bottom skin giving the sound you commented on or by use of a lever the springs can be moved away from the bottom skin giving a more normal drum sound a little more like the secret drummers sound.

The feathered chaps are playing marching snare drums. They have high tension on the top and are very very loud. The others are playing more traditional snare drums. I was in a military Marching band as a boy.

I was brought up by my grandparents . My Grandfather served as a Royal Marine in the Second World War . He was the hardest man I’ve ever known and yes played the clarinet on parade.

I’m ex-RAF. I was never a band member but during my apprenticeship we marched from the ‘living area’ to workshops & schools. There was a pipe band (bagpipes) & a brass band, it was easier to march in step to the beat of a band. The drum major used to toss his mace into the air, over the top of the telephone wires & catch it, on it’s way down. Once he did hit the wires! I think it’s great to see your enthusiasm. Something to give you some understanding of the perfection. The armed forces are disciplined to an incredible level & their perfection shows in most everything that they do.

In the late 60's there was quite a lot of Jamaican steel band music around. Not so much military discipline, rather disco dancing. Sad to see it it's gone, but maybe on the internet. Give it a go, it's amazing🕺💃🥁

The drum tops on Top Secrets are vinyl. The ones on the Marines Drum Corps are animal skins. That makes a totally different sound. They can be switched back and forth.

The white drums are snare drums, whilst the others are toms. The snare has a different type of skin and a different timbre. Usually higher pitched than toms

There is theatrical and there is Military .............. one does all things flashy with ' Jazz Hands ' ( and yes, skilful ) while the other demonstrates their skill but retains military discipline and tradition. I served in the RAF and came from Portsmouth ( the home of the Royal Navy ) and am rightly proud of our Royal Marine Band. Everyone was smiling and enjoying the display .... what more can you ask ?

Hia there just to answer a few of your questions you were asking ? you asked " why are the drums have different sounds as they are hitting them ? the answer is because the skins on the top of the drums are tighter ; and when the drummers at each end of the rows hits hes drum plus nothing next to him , he does that as if he is hitting a drum , so he is keeping up in sync with other drummers that has a drum next to them to hit , i have seen them live at the Scottish Castle in the UK where i live and they practice every day even though they have jobs

This is The Mountbatten Festival of Music which is on every year, The Top Secret Drum Corps are from Switzerland. The Royal Marines have a number of bands, The Massed bands perform Beating Retreat on Horse Guards Parade in London every year, I saw it in 1991.

Where is the Swiss Navy? Switzerland is land locked BTW. Switzerland has its navy sailing on the various lakes like Constance (Bodensee), Leman (or Geneva but people outside of Geneva dislike this spelling), Brienz, Thun, 4 Cantons (Vierwaldstaettersee), Zug, Neuchatel, Biel/Bienne or Morat (Murten) to name a few.

As a suggestion, you might want to react to a video of the Top Secret Drum Corps vs Blue Devils. I believe the Blue Devils are a drum and bugle team which competes in the US. Some of the Blue Devils drum section joined up with the Top Secret in a practice session. Ultimately the two groups joined for an event. This was an interesting meeting.

Not sure if it's been mentioned (I'm not scrolling through all the comments sorry 😋) but the sound of the drums (snares) that you're hearing is affected by the volume of the drum itself and the tightness of the skin (head) and the snare (which is a light coiled spring which is held against the bottom skin and reverberates when the drum is struck, giving the snare drum it's signature sound.

They also do a rim shot occasionally, which is when the stick strikes both the head and rim of the drum iself.

The massed drums are the best. Its pretty rare to see though. This is just one regimental drum unit plus the top secret guys. The massed drums of the British army, which I have seen only twice, is a real experience. Drums are the martial music of the English race. The Top Secret guys are dutch or Norwegian - cant remember which.

The Royal Marines drummers are first class, but the Top Secret Drum corps are a very hard act to get the better of.

The difference in the sound of the drums is something to do with the way the drum is hung the Swiss use a harness like the Americans, in my opinion it makes the drum sound tinny, but the Royal Marines don't and it gives the drum a better sound. I got this from a video i watch many years ago and could be talking total rubbish, but it is what i remember listening to.
