Ok, I think there's a quick point that needs emphasizing. These men are from different countries. They don't usually perform together, and they don't usually train in each others' styles (notice how the Marines have to hoist up their drums when they start playing together? They even carry their drums differently). Which means that they learned each others' styles specifically for this performance, which makes it even more impressive.

I served 9 years in the British army. A year spent in the corps of drums. I could only dream of being at this level. I played the royal tournament in Earl’s Court, and Horse guards parade ‘Beat the retreat’. Wonderful experiences. For those asking about the timing of movement. It’s a simple science. The timing comes from the fact you’ve got the drums to lead your movement. Every move you do, like the raising of the sticks to your nose, is done as fast as you can. That’s the rule. Don’t try and time speed with others. Don’t adjust. Just bang, fast as you can. And if you all do it fast as you can. You all do it in sync.

In dress uniform, the Royal (aka British) Marines can normally be identified by their white pith helmets. Further, in most countries with a naval tradition, you will see that marine drummers also carry and can play a bugle. This harks back to their role in sailing ships as being a way of passing commands. Different drum tempos and bugle calls had specific meanings. When a battleship was going into action it had to be cleared for action, with the partitions taken down, the lashings on the guns 'cast off', powder for the guns brought up from the magazines and the men take up their battle positions. On ships carrying a marine drummer, this was all initiated when he was commanded to beat 'to quarters'.

The thing that amazes me most is that much of the time they are maintaining a military posture, with heads raised staring straight ahead. So that incredibly precise rapid drumming must be mostly done by muscle memory. The hours of practice it must take to develop that must be huge. I am in awe!
@thrand6760
@thrand6760 Год назад
i used to be a snare drummer in a drum corps... lots. of. practice. Like seriously, before we even started drumming, we had to learn drill, and be flawless at that, before we even got to pick up drumsticks. When you know the drill, and can do it perfectly by muscle memory, you begin to incorporate the extras, drumming in time, adding breaks, then adding flourishes to those breaks, then so on, one step at a time, which is why the Top secret Drum corps, just get better and better as they are able to add more complex moves to their display, but guaranteed, every single one of them have every tap of the drum stick, committed to unwavering muscle memory, and will still be able to do it long after they leave the corps

From what I can remember, Alan, I am sure that the Top Secret Drum Corp are all musicians, while the RM band are basically also trained soldiers at the same time. For a better perspective of the RM Band for you. I would suggest you watching/reacting to one or two videos of them playing as "massed bands" as they come down the Mall towards Buckingham Palace . . . Now those videos of them marching and playing are indeed something to behold with their multiple drum lines out in front!

I am a drummer/bugler in the Royal Marines (though not in the video, different band) but have met the TSDC on a different occassion in Basel. They are not musicians but ordinary people having full time jobs and playing drums in their free time. Though many had drumming experience in their army as part of their mandatory service. We are also military trained, but not commando trained like the RM Commandos. Cheers

You need to watch the Edinburgh Royal Military Tattoo. Set in Edinburgh Castle in Scotland, it has an atmosphere second to none. And if the grand finale with all the bands and performers coming together to play and sing Auld Lang Syne doesn't leave a lump in your throat, nothing will. I'm sure you will love it.

Many moons ago I was at the same base as the Band Of HM Royal Marines Commander-In-Chief Fleet, before it was disbanded. I lost count of the number of times I woke up to the sound of the drummers and buglers practicing on the tennis court next to my barrack block. Always a treat, even when they’ve woken you up and you’re on nights!

What I loved about the video is when the secret corps moved to allow the marines to enter centre stage the S.C danced their way off and the R.M marched on! I have to admit that the difference was so stark that I had to laugh 😂 because it's the difference between sweet and sour!/ The choice is yours!🥁🥁🥁 I'm British and I have to say that the drums resonated through out my body

Many thanks for this one the skills are fantastic. I had to watch the original after watching your reaction video, in return have a search using "The Band and Bugles of the Light Division". the first video is only about 6 minutes. Both the drum and bugle was used by the British Army to control troops. Drums are used by the heavy infantry regiments while the light infantry used the bugle as they move faster as you will see on the video.

Never let a Royal Marine hear you discribe them as "army". They are a branch of the Royal Navy, and proud of their tradition and history. Of course, they fight on land alongside army units, but you'll also find a detachment of Marines on most Navy ships, and they are expect at boarding other vessels, searching for drugs, guns and illegal immigrants.
