Life has lost shades of grey, and the art of compromise. It is destroying humanity in all ways. Stephen is demonstrating why he is so highly respected in the UK by most people.

best comment. I dont know exactly when, but in the last 20 years we lost the ability to talk to each other respectfully. we lost the ability to make compromises. Our lives are not red vs blue, it's not sports team A versus sports team B, it is NOT a zero sum game. We can genuinely work together to make life better for everyone, if we get rid of all the hate and all the dogma.

I dont think "life" has lost anything. My prespective is that its a minority of people on "both" sides thats are very loud and always gets validated always in there mind "wins." They dont have to understand or listen to other aspects of our life. (In the 70s John Cleese made i video called "extremest" that are really funny.)

We have a saying for that in Danish (though it doesn't translate well into English). "Empty barrels rumble the loudest" . Bad translation because "rumble" doesn't quite fit but a duck would quack the loudest, a door would squeak the loudest but a barrel would.... what the loudest? Anyway, point is that objects/people with nothing in them tend to make the most noise.

With regard to your observations on Obama care and health insurance: Here in the UK we do actually pay insurance for our health care, it's called national insurance. It's collected, by the government, on your income. It's deducted, currently 8%, from our wage, before we even see it. The pertinent thing is that it's collected by the government and not an insurance company. No middleman, that contributes absolutely zero towards healthcare, creaming a profit off the top.

@jjc5407
@jjc5407 21 день назад
It is an amazingly widespread misconception that National Insurance pays for the NHS. It doesn't. It was created to fund the state pension and out-of-work/welfare benefits. This is why those in receipt of the state pension don't pay it. As it was it was never ring-fenced; it simply goes straight into government coffers along with all the other taxes. The NHS along with all government spending comes out of that pot. In that respect it could be said to contribute to the funding of the NHS, but only in the same way all other taxes could be too. The Blair government raised employee National Insurance to, so they claimed, increase spending on the NHS although raising NI enabled them to meet their election pledge not to raise the more high profile income tax rate. Given NI is basically income tax by another name for working age people it was just political spin. I do wonder if this is the root cause of the belief that National Insurance is for the NHS though.
@jackgee3200
@jackgee3200 21 день назад
UK National Insurance has absolutely nothing specifically to do with health care or pension funding. It's just an ordinary tax and goes into the same single 'pot' as all other taxes to be spent on 'whatever'. Named to promote a myth that it's a 'good' tax for health care/pensions - taking advantage of peoples willing ignorance.

You should check out Stephen Fry talking about the difference between UK humour and US Humour. As others have said below in the UK he is regarded as a national treasure. So here is the thing, if the UK is apparently so divided by race, colour, religion, country and so on. How is it in this divided nation a gay Jew who suffers from bipolar disorder is a national treasure? The thing about political correctness is that it's not a bad idea, people just need to quit being so militant about it on either side. My best friend is trans. We've known one another for about 30 years. Up until five years ago, my best friend was a he. Now, since I had 25 years of calling her a he, I do occasionally slip up, even after all of her surgeries. How does she react? Playfully wacks on the back of my head and says, "She, you prick!" with a smile. In the end, it doesn't inconvenience me in any way to call her she, and she knows I don't intend any malice when I slip up. It's really that simple.

Take African Americans for example, once the 'N' word was the common use term but it has past through Necro, Black, Coloured, People of Colour, Racial Minority & a new one 'racialized People'. What term do I use that DOES NOT OFFEND? Especially when "N's" can call "N's" a "N" without offence when greeting each other & in their music 🤔(NOTE; I don't commonly use the 'N' word but will in a debate if needed) 31:08 100%, A word is JUST A WORD, what you take it to mean may not be what I take it to mean or what I intended for you to take to mean, YOUR interpretation of a word IS ON YOU - Not Me

I stayed out of the last election as far as the 2 major parties are concerned and went 3rd party. With the idiocy we currently have, I'm not so sure 3rd party voting benefits anyone, even if you object to the 2 main options. We have barely controlled inflation, millions coming across the border unimpeded with a catch and release policy, we have a justice system that is going after folks and trampling on their rights, and a government that's colluded with big tech to silence opposing views.

@@TheEclecticBeard Very similar to UK politics, in that if you avoid the two main opposing parties and opt for the "3rd", that vote only supports or relegates the main ones by taking the vote away from them. The alternative parties never have a chance, due to the skewed system of voting in this country that is always rigged in favour of a two party system of government. Sometimes I lean towards the sentiments of your great comedian George Carlin, who stated "On voting day I say fuck them, I stay at home", as there is no real democracy anymore, just an illusion of it.

I'm in Scotland, I now have no idea who to vote for in the next week. They've all gone to shit. & now it looks like Nigel Farage might get in, he's like a King Cobra lurking at the bottom of a snakepit. Hah, I remember thinking Biden would just be a good president just because he wasn't Trump & was a Dem. I must admit, Trump was the biggest reason American politics got thrust into my awareness. How surprised I have been to see how both parties actually opperate. We're a right mess of a pair of countries aren't we. At least we've got some smaller fringe parties but they're fking tiny. & it's even more complex in Scotland. It just seems like the question is, which of the biggest parties is the best of a bad situation because so many people will still just vote for 1 of them, Labour, Tory, Reform UK, & Scotland has the SNP on top of that

This version of the debate is obviously heavily edited. It offers the opinion mainly of Mr Stephen Fry and some of Mr Jordan Peterson. While this may seem an unfair representation, and it is, watching the entire debate will only confirm and entrench the points made by them. A debate which should have revolved around the fight against the repression of speech and the dangers of political correctness. It is crucial to consider the full context of the debate to truly understand the arguments presented and avoid misinterpretation." Having said that, these guys did well.

I watched this debate when it was released and it was just a compete shit-show. It was painful to watch. Professor Dyson was combative and verbosely lacking substance, and the lady on his side of the argument was lacking substance but also lacking eloquence too. It turned into two sides speaking past each other and no one really came out of it any better off other than they got to hear Stephen Fry speak.

Politics is at the root of many of our problems in all its forms. They give themselves titles such as "right honourable " [which i believe is also used in America] which considering the now mounting list of scandals in the U.K. with the infected blood scandal , the expenses scandal,[still being fiddled by all accounts] money for questions ,the latest betting scandal and the list goes on and on. The system is powerful and was forged around the Magna Carta when the Barons forced the King to sign a document that maintained their elitism in the full knowledge that though the masses were included the masses were poor and powerless and apart from the useless vote [my own opinion] little has changed or why else would they continually change the red tribe for the blue tribe over and over and over again, surely that should tell them something is wrong here.

The main problem is, that you can only meet people halfway in order to be able to reach some kind of compromise, and if those who oppose you aren't willing to do so then there's very little you can do about it. None so blind as those who won't see. Political correctness is the epitome of sanctimonious hypocrisy. The self-righteous, 'why can't everyone be perfect like me?', attitude that often contradicts itself depending on whom it's applied to. The idea that some people are inherently, 'privileged', based entirely on immutable characteristics, whilst others aren't, is a major part of the narrative, when, within itself, it shows many forms of bigotry rolled into one. And yet, to not agree with this gross collectivised presupposition somehow makes one bigoted! The duplicitous nature of political correctness that claims that consequences for actions should only be applied according to the same immutable characteristics mentioned, with those who don't fit into the category being excused. A soft bigotry of low expectations, where it's deemed certain demos of people shouldn't be held to the same standards as others, when in reality, each and every one should be judged individually, rather than pigeon-holed and treated as part of some generalised monolith. Thatcher once said that the only problem with socialism was that you eventually run out of spending other people's money. Coupled with the inherent, 'self-preservation', drive within people that will always arise when there's, 'something for nothing', offered to them. Instead of just taking enough, they'll keep pushing the amount to include more and more, taking as much as they can, for as long as they can, until such a time as the bill to cover it all, (paid for in taxes), reached astronomical proportions. Those getting paid 6 figure sums in non-jobs within the public sector, being perfect examples. The public sector has always been a money pit that can never be filled, simply because the more that's thrown in, the more opportunistic those who spend it become for their own means.

A lot of political "debates" are basicly, cover your hears, shut your Eyes, and say as loud as possible "NA NA NA NA NA, I cant hear you, like a 8 year old" Instead of listening to what the other person are saying, cause god forbid you should agree with and understand the point of someone on the other side. People are not agree/disagreeing with what is being said, only with what side is saying it.

At 3:10 there's a noise that almost sounds like Fry farted. The points you, Mr. Beard make about Political Correctness are true on both sides. Left/Right. Everyone needs take a deep breathe and breathe out slow. I dislike Peterson, it's not strictly his politics, I think he makes good points now and then, but he does give me "Demon-Headmaster" vibes and that bother me. It's a shame this wasn't the full debate - but I totally get why not in this format, but it's a bit... I'm too high to concentrate on the full things, but all voices should be equal here. Fry - I think makes excellent points. He makes my skin crawl and I cannot shake that, same as my Demonic-Peterson impression. I really recommend some Yevgeny Zamyatin - GREAT Russian Sci-Fi. Problem is with US medical - they have enough money to hammer away at whichever side. Democrat = bribes to only implement it in a half-baked fashion. Republican = bribes to dismantle it. Both sides screw you. I think the long-term plan is to wipe out the middle class, they're the ones really getting squeezed (into poverty) and it's hard times all over for normal folk - from middle class down. In 20 years, there'll be aristocrats and the poor + a lot of robots. Some mysterious dude will come on tv/web/neuralink + he'll have a red puppet on one hand and blue on the other and declare himself king of the world. Sadly, it'll be burned up rubble by then mostly rubble. Left/Right's made further worse by media (that has its' own agenda) and media on both sides that's VERY intent on soundbites + selling ads. As we're in a digital world - for most tv that ad revenue's shrinking. For internet news (again both sides), clickbait + not professional organisation. No professionality and no actual organisation - often one dude chasing clickbait + that doesn't matter so much for D&D-nerds, or Sports enthusiasts, but damn it's so harmful in politics. Stuff's taken an even weirder change over here in the UK - "woke" people that are also VERY-right wing. The kind that just "don't trust science" anymore + believe where in a repton controlled-Matrix/Illuminati world, total distrust of government (smart), but also kinda hippies. As per the word "liberal" it is wild. I'd make a point for the misundertanding of the word "Socialism". I get McCarthyism and the shere insanity of the cold war - which has arrisen, but Putin's the good guy now - wtf??? If you do the full thing - I'd watch it/a livestream. Mr. Beard - fantastic video, we could do a beer/smoke if we're ever on the same continent. 🍻🍻🍻🤘🌪🌪🌪

She got 3 million more votes thanks to metropolitan areas of LA, NY, and Chicago. Those cities coupled with the DC Beltway would almost give her more votes than he received by themselves. 4 cities scattered through the US, almost 70% of her vote count. Trump; won 3x as many counties which also gave him more states wins. The popular vote is cool and all but 4 metropolitan cities shouldn't determine who is president.
