I'm shocked that you thought Australia might be landlocked. Australia is an island and a continent. "Girt" means surround, therefore Australia is "girt by sea"- surrounded by sea.
"Girt" is the past participle of "gird," as in "to gird oneself," to protect oneself as with armor. So, Australia is protected by being surrounded by ocean.
An island by definition is a landmass totally surrounded by water but smaller than a continent. Since Australia is considered a continent it isn't classed as an island.
Advance = move forward Australia = Australia Fair = old english for pleasing, attractive...but could also mean just and equal So it basically means "Move forward, Australia, the Beautiful/fair and equal

“Young” referred to the age of australia, in comparison to a lot of other nations. This word has since been replaced with “one”, to acknowledge Australia’s indigenous history.
@@yesterdayschunda1760 Yep. Another Liberal Party cock up. The Seeker's Australia is the most popular and should be our anthem. Our Anthem was written by a Pom when Aussie was a British Colony.
@@yesterdayschunda1760 That might be an overgeneralization, I have a brother still in a state high school in Brisbane and they still sing the anthem at the start of parade. I also have a friend who is a teacher at the private islamic school in Melbourne and they also sing the anthem once a week.
“Young” is referring to the country, not the people. It has since been changed to “one”, in consideration of our indigenous people who have been here for thousands of years.
I grew up singing Advance Australia Fair every Monday morning at school assembly and it stopped after the first verse. Unfortunately I, like I'm sure many others, had no clue the anthem even has a second verse until I was much older. They changed a word or maybe two to make it more representative of the nation but it still isn't us. Ask most Aussies what should be the anthem and you'll get one of 3 answers. 1 - I am Australian, by The Seekers, 2 - I still call Australia home by Peter Allen or 3 - Waltzing Matilda by Banjo Paterson. Unfortunately none of which is pompous enough to get 'national' anthem status so all 3 settle for 'unofficial' status instead. Come on Aussies, tell me I'm wrong?
One of our most well known and loved 'bush poets' was A.B. "Banjo" Patterson. His tales are some of our most awesome and, often, funniest, bush tales. Some years ago, a group named Wallis & Matilda put them to music. Would love you to react to some of those as they include tales such as "The Man From Snowy River" and "Clancy of the Overflow". When I went to school, we used to read these stories all the time, but my children only know them because I used to read them to them. They are amazing stories and form the basis of our history and our legends of early settlers.
The very best version, in my opinion, is Julie Anthony and the Aussie group Human Nature at the Sydney Olympics. 22 years later, I still get a tear in the eye.
I love love love that version. Julie is our national anthem. No one sings it like her & the Sydney Olympics performance with Human Nature still brings goosebumps & tears. Just like our 4/100 relay team that smashed the Seppo's outta the pool on night 1. The funny thing is American's have no idea we Aussies & some pommies call the Seppo's.. the Septic tanks of the world
Only 121 years old as a country so we are young as a nation. Capitalised because it's the name of the song. Australia also has some of the most abundant and largest variety of natural resources in the world. Uranium, coal, natural gas, opals, gold, iron ore, and much more. I think I've heard we have the largest and most varied natural resources of any single country.
@@JohnHollands neither of those were 221 years ago, thats why i asked the question. cause 221 years ago isnt a significant date. 1788 and 1901 are, like you mentioned.
I love the fact it is sung Indigenously first! I applaud the Kiwis for their National Anthem and the inclusion of their first peoples. Aboriginies have been here just as long as the Maori's and I wish the Aussie Nat Anthem was changed to reflect that and to be sung indigeniously first.. (Q: am I the only person who knows the USA, Kiwi and Aussie National Anthems? like word )for word?? }
@@melindafrazer1427 You might notice that many events are now featuring exactly what you suggest and have been doing so for round two years that I know of. For the record the NA of South Africa is unique in that there are two songs merged but sung in a total of five languages. Some other Nations have four languages.
Yes, you're correct "Advance Australia Fair" is a poem- anthem and was published in early December 1878 it originally had 4 verses, today we only use 1 and 3. 2 and 4 are not used much. they went verse 1. Australia's sons, let us rejoice, For we are young and free; We've golden soil and wealth for toil, Our home is girt by sea; Our land abounds in nature's gifts Of beauty rich and rare; In history's page, let every stage Advance Australia fair. In joyful strains let us sing, Advance, Australia fair. verse2. When gallant Cook from Albion sail'd, To trace wide oceans o'er, True British courage bore him on, Til he landed on our shore. Then here he raised Old England's flag, The standard of the brave; "With all her faults we love her still" "Britannia rules the wave." In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance, Australia fair. verse 3. While other nations of the globe Behold us from afar, We'll rise to high renown and shine Like our glorious southern star; From England soil and Fatherland, Scotia and Erin fair, Let all combine with heart and hand To advance Australia fair. In joyful strains then let us sing Advance, Australia fair. verse 4. Should foreign foe e'er sight our coast, Or dare a foot to land, We'll rouse to arms like sires of yore To guard our native strand; Britannia then shall surely know, Beyond wide ocean's roll, Her sons in fair Australia's land Still keep a British soul. In joyful strains the let us sing "Advance Australia fair!" As of 1 January 1901 the Anthem was verse 1. Australians all let us rejoice, For we are young and free; We've golden soil and wealth for toil; Our home is girt by sea; Our land abounds in nature's gifts Of beauty rich and rare; In history's page, let every stage Advance Australia Fair. In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia Fair. Verse 2 (Modified from original verse 3) Beneath our radiant Southern Cross We'll toil with hearts and hands; To make this Commonwealth of ours Renowned of all the lands; For those who've come across the seas We've boundless plains to share; With courage let us all combine To Advance Australia Fair. In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia Fair. As of 1 January 2021 the first verse is now "Australians all let us rejoice, For we are one and free..."
Wrong - we were still singing "Australians SONS ... " in primary school in the 1970's. I remember there being am uproar about it a few years later and it changed to "Australians ALL ... ".
@@tulinfirenze1990 Nothing wrong about this at all. No idea what school you went to, my parents went to school in the 70's and have advised me they sung "Australia all let us rejoice" Either way it was sung, this is not wrong. Your school was clearly just out dated and due an upgrade.
@@tulinfirenze1990 The only "uproar" in the 70's wasn't the lyrics of the song, but the song itself. People chose Advance Australia Fair then in 70's went back to God Save the Queen. And then reinstated Advance Australia Fair by the late 70's. That's the only "uproar" to do with the song in the 70's, not the lyrics. The performance of this anthem at the 2000 Olympics is the benchmark for this piece of work, Culminating in Julie Anthony’s powerhouse crescendo……still gives me chills to this day.
When we arrived in Australia from South Africa in the ‘70s my kids came home from school and said they’d learnt to the National Song . I said sing it for me and they started off ‘ Australia’s Sunset ostriches …” ( Australia’s Sons let us rejoice ‘ ) ..😂
Since the coronation of Queen Elizabeth the anthem was "God Save the Queen". In 1973 there was a competition to select a new national anthem. None of the entries were deemed suitable so they turned to some traditional songs. A poll was made to choose among "Advance Australia Fair", "Waltzing Matilda" and "Song of Australia". In 1974 "Advance Australia Fair" was adopted as the Australian National Anthem, but in a turnaround in 1976 "God Save The Queen" was reinstated. In 1977 the Australian Electoral Office conducted a plebiscite, which found "Advance Australia Fair" to be the preferred anthem (43.6 per cent), followed by "Waltzing Matilda" (28.45 percent). In 1984 it decided that the National Anthem would consist of verses one and two of "Advance Australia Fair" with some changes. Another change was made in 2021 to more equally reflect the makeup of the population. "God Save the Queen" is the royal anthem and is still used at some official functions attended by Queen or members of the royal family.
My late mother hated this song. She called it a funeral durge and believed Waltzing Matilda should be the song representing Australia. We're a happy upbeat country that needs an anthem to represent this and a song about a thieving swagman drowning in a pond is just the thing. LOL.
Yes a hell of a lot of natural resources. Coal, is our biggest export, gold, lithium, copper, diamonds, gas, opals, iron. Plenty more we send off too. Our mains are gold, coal, diamonds and opals.
I’m kind of sick of everyone outside Australia thinking the whole country is just spiders and kangaroos… we have beautiful cities by the sea, shopping malls and all the rest… sorry to break it to you but we’re humans too not mates living in the outback all the time
By far the best rendition of the National Anthem is to watch the National Anthem at the opening of the Sydney Olympic Games. This insipid version makes the song sound slow and plodding. At the Olympics it starts with stockmen on horses, goes through a jazz fanfare, a pop version and concludes with Julie Anthony's emotional rendition. Possibly the best anthem performance at any Olympics. Highly recommended.
Hope you realise that the version here is what was recorded by JA and is the official piece given to organisations when they request a copy to be played at official events.
@@flamingfrancis Like many official requirements, of course they wanted the most staid and dull version. I guess they think that by draining the emotion out of the song it somehow becomes more solemn. The Olympics version shows that the song is capable of being rousing and emotionally engaging if artists are allowed to put their heart into it.
Advance Australia Fair means to keep moving forward same reason the Shield of Australia has an Emu & Kangaroo as neither can walk backwards/backtrack so must keep moving in a forwards direction! AKA DO NOT REPEAT PAST MISTAKES!!!!
@@jgsheehan8810 While that might be true it is not stipulated in the song and is not intended to be We are girt by sea means we are surrounded/protected by the sea Wealth for toil means that with hard work we are all able to do well
I love the optimism and just plain 'niceness' of our anthem. Compared with USA's rockets red glare and bombs bursting in air and the flag lasting the night. AND France's "to arms, Citizens, form your battalions" and the impure blood soaking the fields. Germany's used to be "Germany above all" - how'd that work out for them?
Australia's natural treasures would include the Great Barrier Reefs and other protected marine environments, other Heritage areas such as The Franklyn River and other National Parks, Ularoo, the Alps Snowy Mountains ... Dargo High Plains, Southern Alps etc, the beaches, deserts, the diverse plant and animal life in all environments. Agriculture is also a gift I suppose, and Australia exports to agricultural products widely around the world. Australia is still mining and exporting opals, saphires gold, nickel, iron ore aluminium, uranium, oil,
I'm Primary school they never actually taught us the lyrics of the anthem. We just sung/listend to it every Thursday (I think it was Thursday?) Until you got it. And even then you'd get a few words muddled up bc you can't tell if it's in or with
That's disgusting to hear, everyone in the country should know the NATIONAL ANTHEM, no wonder there's a lot of disrespect, when I was a kid we were taught God save the Queen and then we got our own anthem and everyone was taught it, it's part of national pride, schools should definitely be teaching that, rather all this gender neutral garbage,
We’ve recently changed the national anthem to “we are one & free” to make our indigenous society members feel more included. Their 60,000 year history didn’t really fit in with being “young & free” even though Australia only became a nation in 1901.
This could be confusing to those out of the loop. Just in case, our anthem is still the same song, but it has been revised. The song is the same except the line, "we are young and free" was changed to, "we are one and free." Just wanted to clarify in case anyone thought we changed anthem to a new one called, "We are one and free."

Our old anthem was the British anthem. A referendum was held to choose a new anthem and I voted for a new song written to the music of Waltzing Matilda. It was called "God bless Australia". Consider doing a comparison and see if Australians got it right.
The lyrics - We are young and free This is because Australia is such a young country compared to others. So basically it is saying that as a country we are young. (Australia was taken by England in like like 1700s I think)
The Australian National Anthem was offically updated in the last two years. Originally stating 'we are young and free' (referring to Australia being a young nation as Australian Federation was only 121 years ago) the line has been updated to 'we are one and free' to acknowledge that Aboriginal's have called Australia home over 65,000 years before colonisation.
as a kid we only had God Save The Queen and it played in cinemas and you had to stand, we had to stand at home when it played on tv too! Well, that was normal back then. This anthem is relatively new... and it is uninspiring, wimpy, and not a battle hymn like the American one. Another song, which has all the right qualities for an anthem and is loved here is titled, Island Home, (Christine Anu's version of My Island Home). Check it out, I think it sums us up and is inspiring. Christune Anu sang it at the Sydney Olympics Closing Ceremony (2000). A really emotionally stirring song. seeeyaaah

The Thylacine is/ was a large dog sized marsupial hence had a backwards facing pouch for their Joey, like the wombat.
I'm an Australian and I refuse to sing the current version because I was bought up with this version. Most Australians don't know the second verse. When I at school we had to sing the full anthem
Most Australian's will tell you that one of these 3 should be the National Anthem: I am Australian, by The Seekers I still call Australia home by Peter Allen Waltzing Matilda by Banjo Paterson (on the $10 note)
