As an American I am not familiar with any of the smaller Canadian cities. Today I am very interested to learn about some small cities in Canada that Americans like myself would normally never hear about. If you enjoyed the video feel free to leave a comment, like, or subscribe for more!

Tyler, Signal Hill in St John's is where Marconi received the first wireless radio signal across the Atlantic from Europe! Kingston is where many Americans loyal to the British crown moved to after the revolution!

From Signal Hill you also get a view of beautifully coloured St. John's, and the harbour. If you are lucky you will get to see icebergs out on the Atlantic ocean as well. For me it was end of June.

I’m shocked nowhere from the Okanagan was mentioned. There are a few towns and cities along Okanagan Lake, and we are known as wine country here (we also have the only desert in Canada in Oliver and Osoyoos. Peachland is my favourite, though it is a village and not a city. Summerland is also beautiful. The largest city in the Okanagan is Kelowna, which has the nickname of Kelownafornia, because we have more sunny days (IN THE SUMMER) than California. A fun fact that didn’t make Californians happy when I worked at one of the most famous Canadian wineries, whose 1994 Chardonnay beat out every other Chardonnay that year in a blind tasting, and put our Canadian wine on the world map. Canada is also the home of Ice Wine, which is a protected label like Champagne, which can only really be called champagne if it is from the champagne region of France, it is the same for ice wine. It’s super sweet because the grapes are pressed frozen, which concentrates the sugar, though you can image how little juice you would get out of a crushed frozen grape - it’s very expensive. The Okanagan is a particularly funny place being in the centre of the province, because that means it sits in a rain shadow. You’ve noticed all the mountains in anything to do with BC, and you’ll be hard pressed to find somewhere settled here that doesn’t have mountains or foothills. The Okanagan is between two mountain ranges and their foothills, the Coastal Mountain range and the Rocky Mountains. Most of BC will remind you of the idea of the Pacific Northwest vibes, being rainy and green (pretty much twilight/Juno vibes/any mental image of Portland) but because of the rain shadow, it’s extremely dry here. The Okanagan is the warmest place in Canada (because of the summers, don’t confuse this with mildest, go to the coast for temperate weather). Because of this difference in rainfall though, the geography, flora, and fauna are quite different than anywhere else in BC. Honestly, you could do a whole video about the Okanagan by itself. Groundbreaking Canadian wine, beautiful weather and scenery, fastest growing city in Canada within it (Kelowna), the indigenous history that ties this part of Canada very closely to Washington because the territory is precolonial, and existed before the 49th parallel was marked on maps. Most of the basin that the Okanagan water system empties into in Washington is Okanagan territory, though down there they spell it Okanogan. The Sylix-Okanagan people, the indigenous people of the area, have made a language reclaimation course and movement, which has moved the Okanagan language, Nsylixtion from critically endangered to endangered. Moving a language up a category when it is already starting to become endangered is so difficult, and I am so proud that the language is being revitalized. Elders are getting to hear their primary language spoken to them for the first time in decades. The average age of speakers is 40 years younger in the Okanagan than if we were to compare with three of the groups of critically endangered languages in territories that are now called Vancouver. There were Japanese and Ukrainian internment camps here, used to hold persons deemed suspicious by the Canadian government closer to the beginning of the 20th century. Interned people were used as free labour to build many Canadian projects (like lake Louise being built by Ukrainian interned labour) though most Canadian are not aware of the extent of this yet. Vernon in particular had both Japanese and Ukrainians interned in what is now a base camp for the military and cadets. Finally, to bring it back to the first people’s here, the Okanagan is home to one of the largest indigenous bands in the country, Westbank First Nation. Growing up here means that I had a completely different experience of indigenous culture than many Canadians, especially those from Ontario, because the Rocky Mountains insulated the indigenous communities from most colonizers, for about a century longer than other parts of the country. The first colonizers into BC were Frenchmen, and they were fur trappers, who relied heavily on indigenous knowledge and partnership to work. They had good relations with some indigenous groups, to the point that there were separate words for different kinds of white people - the French who were friendly, and the English who were foes. What else…Rattlesnake Island across from Peachland has interesting lore - there are ruins of an imagined theme park, though all that’s left is an abandoned bar and mini golf course, the schemer of this plan got in trouble and took hostages in the embassy in Lebanon.

So Tyler you're correct in that we build our cities on water. It's also true we have a lot of water (rivers lakes and long coastlines. What you might be missing here is that all of human civilization is built on a Waterway. Rivers and lakes are the original highways, so trade springs up and you get towns throughout all of human settlement.

You'll notice a lot of the beauty is in Eastern Canada when it comes to smaller cities (or large towns) and because it's east there is a lot of ocean and bays. I'm originally from Newfoundland and have been to St. John's (not to be confused with Saint John, NB ) and Corner Brook. Newfoundland is of course an island in the Atlantic, so it's completely surrounded by water. It was a British colony until 1949 when it joined Canada. Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island are surrounded by water and are what we call the "playground" of the Atlantic. New Brunswick is also amazing being famous for all it's forrests and excellent fishing. Fredericton is the Capital city of NB and is situated close to one of Canadas larger Army bases in Oromocto.

St. John’s… Capital of Newfound LAND (it is not pronounced “lund”the word Land is really enunciated like saying Stand. So you wouldn’t say “stund”) Cabot Tower on Signal Hill, First Transatlantic message. Protected harbour during war time. Of course George Street, most concentrated street with bars. Only pedestarians allowed on street. Pubs, local live entertainment, even more rave like, LGBTQ, a real mix. Bars are buildings literally side by side. So much… the colourful townhouses (known as jelly bean) has become iconic and generally an unwritten rule to paint the houses according. Be careful driving, extremely steep slopes, especially during winters. There is a size limit for trucks. University, colleges, historic park (Bowering “Bow (ie. bow to someone) er - ing” Park) Ches’ Fish and Chips and Mary Brown’s (chicken) are a must. People are called “Townies” … I’m from NL and not a townie so it’s like cheering for the other hockey team but yeah, gotta give it credit. ❤ 👍👍

Its also in that part of the world where some of the very best sunsets in the wirld take place. The surrounding area with smaller towns have a lot of history such as summer residences of former prime ministers and vips like Molson, Louis St Laurent, etc. And people who escaped the heat of cities back in the 1800 s an 1900s. Born and raised in Fredericton - locals pronounce it “Fred-ick-tun”. Its nickname, “Freddy” is shortened from “Freddy Beach”. There’s no proper beach in the city so I’m not quite sure of the reason for that. It’s just more fun to say or type “Freddy” than the full name. The bridge shown on Google Maps was, I believe, the old train bridge which has been transformed into a wonderful walking bridge. Fredericton’s known as The City of Stately Elms. They stayed with us for awhile until we found out who they were and they were sent back. Was that you? Lol

I swear I could watch you looking at these small cities for hours, thank you! Two years ago my family and I spent a week in Wolfville NS and absolutely loved it. My mom and I took the double decker wine bus. The location was a 2 hour drive from everywhere we wanted to visit within the province and the kids loved watching the tides change. I've only been to the outskirts of BC but I'm convinced that every single square inch of that pronvice is breathtaking based on the pictures I've seen. I was hoping to see some Muskoka cities on this list but oh well.

I was born and raised in Fredericton, and it should absolutely be on this list. My family is still there, so I visit regularly. It's a beautiful jewel, nestled in the Saint John River Valley. It was a little small for me personally which is why I ended up in Montreal. But I still love visiting. When I was in high school in the 70's, there was only one high school. My graduating class was over 1,000 kids. It made intramural sports a bit tricky. Our hockey team and others, had to travel to nearby towns to play other high school teams. Now there's a high school on both sides of the river. It's the provincial capital, so it's the seat of government. And home to the University of New Brunswick. An interesting side note; from 1970 to 1987, New Brunswick had a gay premier. "A confirmed bachelor", but everyone knew. It just wasn't talked about. Until he was caught flying young men to New York, on the government plane, for party weekends. That's been pretty much whitewashed from history. His only scandal that's remembered now, was when he got caught with a bag of pot on the Queen's plane while she was touring New Brunswick. So, in many ways, New Brunswick was ahead of the curve. 🙂

You HAVE to visit Kelowna, BC. (Pronounced Kel- OH'- na) Pop. about 145,000. On the longest lake in BC, Okanagan Lake. This city is stunning! Parks all over the place. Tree lined streets. Beaches, beaches, beaches. Vineyards and orchards galore, growing grapes, cherries, apricots, peaches, nectarines, plums, apples and pears. Access to Big White Mountain where, in winter, you can ski, sled and toboggan to your heart's content! This is an all season playground! Think for a moment. If you were a settler in the 1800s, would you want to live in a desert away from a source of water if you had access to a lovely cool clean lake? Of course in Canada ,where there are a lot of lakes, people who are not stupid decided to build by water. Wouldn't you?

Been living in Fredericton for 15 years or so now, and it's growing a lot nowadays. A common nickname for it is "Freddy Beach" (or just Freddy for short), despite the fact that its only beach is around a small lake on the outskirts of the city. New Brunswick's other two major cities are also well worth taking note of. Moncton is known as the Hub city, and is basically where New Brunswick, PEI and Nova Scotia meet. It's the second fastest growing city in Canada at the moment too. It's really a tri-city too, made up of Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview. Riverview (as you almost touhced on) is technically a town, but it's bigger than some of NB's northern cities. (It stays a town for political reasons; it is a pure-English city, next to Moncton that is Bilingual and Dieppe that is Bilingual but Frencher; if Riverview were to become a city it would have to become bilingual as well). NB's other city is Saint John, not to be confused with St John's. It's on the mouth of the Saint John River and the Bay of Fundy and home of the Reversing Falls. When the Fundy Tide comes in, it literally forces the Saint John river to flow backwards, causing a whirlpool at the mouth of the river. It's also the oldest (or second oldest) city in Canada (St John's argues it ), and is just a classic historical and industrial maritime city. Flipping back to Moncton, it is also known for an aspect of the Fundy Tides. The Tides give it the Tidal Bore; a big wave that flows up and down the Petitcodiac River with the tides every few hours.

I'm from Saint John, NB. I'll clear something up for you. St. John's is the oldest city. Saint John is the oldest incorporated city in Canada. People always confuse the two. What does incorporation of a city mean? It means that Saint John was the first city, in Canada, to have a municiple government - locally elected officials.

In Newfoundland, the vast majority of the towns / cities are on water, as the main industry for centuries was fishing. The geography is amazingly scenic - and the geology fascinating if you're into that. The island has portions from what are now North America (west coast; the Long Range mountain chain there is the northernmost bit of what the US calls the Appalachians, Europe (central portion) and northern Africa. It is also one of the few places on the planet where you can stand on the earth's mantle (in Gros Morne national park; a UNESCO world heritage site - the province has four, plus a UNESCO GeoPark). And for flat earthers, Brimstone Head is one of the four corners of the world. I moved back to NL almost two years ago, and live in St. John's. A great place to live. And so much to explore throughout the province!

Moose Jaw had an interesting history during prohibition. The Tunnels of Moose Jaw is the centrepiece of tourist attractions surrounding the legend of the World's Most Notorious gangster, Al Capone. It is believed that Mr. Capone spent considerable time hiding out in Moose Jaw's underground tunnel network and there'splenty of evidence to suggest he did. Great interactive tour that takes you through the Tunnels, plus the city has gorgeous murals throughout downtown. Moose Jaw also has the Temple Garden hotel and spa, featuring a geothermal mineral pool that draws people from all over the world.
