#thedaytoday #reaction #chrismorris King Boomer's Reaction to Chris Morris starting an all out war on the British dark comedy show The Day Today. ENJOY! Original Video: • The Day Today - WAR!
I met Chris Morris when working as an extra for his film, Four Lions. He is such a super down to earth guy, which made me appreciate his work even more..
@@AishaIsFabulous-x- Thanks! We were dressed like terrorists at 8am in some mountains with a film crew... As you can imagine, it wasn't the spectacular view the mountain climbers were expecting!..
@@Zavala1 Kinda yeah... It was freezing cold on a winter morning, and like an idiot, I arrived to the film set wearing only a t-shirt.. as we were about to leave set he came up to me and put his hand on my forehead to check my temperature, acting like he was some kind of doctor... And when we were having lunch on the film set, there was a box of chocolates, and for some reason, he was smelling them. To this day I still don't know what you can deduce from sniffing chocolate...
I remember the day after the 'Paedogeddon' Brass Was originally screened on C4, and it was headline news. What the media didn't understand was that Morris wasn't taking the P out of abuse victims, but rather the media's handling of the subject
Oh they understood alright. They knew exactly where Morris was aiming his guns. That's why their response was so immediate and visceral. They just had to play dumb and misrepresent it in order to whip up the hysteria among the unwashed masses.
Yes! I remember it so well too. I must have been 13 or 14 and laughed my arse off. The media outrage blew my mind because the programme was such _obvious_ satire, and as I was able to see that as a young teen I couldn’t understand why full-grown adults were wetting their knickers over it! They just wanted to be outraged, and of course nothing has changed since. Outrage sells papers, after all. 😏
@@clothilde1623Same,I remember randomly flicking through the TV one school night and finding it and crying with laughter 😱👏👏👏😂😂😂then seeing everything blow up the next day, I used to walk to school and pop in the shop on the way, so I saw all the headlines kicking off 🤦🏻♂️😑😂😂💜
Utter genius, one of my heroes. "The stretched twig of peace is at melting point" is one of the best mixed metaphors of all time. What I love most is that he challenges accepted norms, and exposes how ridiculous and hypocritical a lot things are, we just don't think about them enough and just acquiesce mindlessly. Pointing this out can make people either uncomfortable or angry. Nobody likes a Cassandra. Edit. How could I forget? Your boys did you proud last night, hope you saw some of it. Arise Sir Hank Aaron Chipper Jones!
The 'guy on the ground' is the brilliant writer and actor, Patrick Marber - frequently a foil for Chris Morris's aggressive anchor on The Day Today. He was one of the main writers on the programme and a writer for Alan Partridge. He's known today mainly as a playwright and screenplay writer. I photographed his wedding.
I just love the message that the media drum up all this tension between groups just so they can brag about all the coverage they'll be able to bring to you.
The paedo Brass Eye is beyond hilarious, but its only for people who understand, the people who are from the Dark side of life need to be ridiculed. Personally i think its the very best way to deal with serious dark stuff, have a gigantic laugh at it! I love love love Chris Morris 💝
Yes, as I commented, I remember it going out and the papers going mental over it the next day. Morris wasn't making fun of child abuse victims, but rather the media's handling of the subject.
@@BigAlCapwnAnd then the tabloid press overreacted and sensationalised it in the exact way that the programme had been satirising. I'm sure the papers involved knew exactly what he was doing, they're not stupid people, but they just have to be seen to react in that way unfortunately.
Outrage sells papers unfortunately. You’d have to be thick as mince not to realise that Brass Eye was just a biting satire. Sadly many people are, or pretend to be… (hello shitty ‘journalists’)
Chris Morris is an absolute genius of comedy and writing..He actually started on radio and some stuff he does on that is amazing. You should check out the "Suicide journalist" monologue..read the backstory to it as well.
Thank you SO MUCH for this reaction, King Boomer. I've been shouting for you to do this series for many, many weeks. The special 7th episode of Brasseye is by far the most shocking and controversial ep. Eps 1 - 6 aren't as dark but they are as funny. You will be missing out on god tier UK comedy, there's almost nothing funnier and wittier, KB. ❤️👍
Morris is not only a brilliant writer but a visionary. A show he co-wrote with Charlie Brooker called 'Nathan Barley' is a must watch, but will never get recommended because it's quite niche in the comedy world. It was made before social media, before Facebook and Twitter yet predicts all of those things happening. One of the first lines in the show is how the main character is annoyed by people being fixated by their "twit machines" (phones) despite, again Twitter not existing at the time
This. It was so ahead of the curve. I know Nick Burns who played him, could not be further from that self-facilitating shit of a person. Nick was told it would age badly, which is gold. Barley was actually around in '99 on Charlie's satirical TV listings site - 'TVGoHome' - where there was a show simply called 'Cunt', and was a fly-on-the-wall doc detailing Barley's life. Morris contributed to the site without credit, but wanted to develop that character with Charlie quite early on. They foresaw a wild amount before bringing it to TV: certain tech, asinine fashion trends, hipsters, the man bun, cereal cafes, shows like Naked Attraction and Made In Chelsea. Crazy and depressing. There was a Barely easter egg in a Black Mirror episode if memory serves also - a framed 'sugarAPE' article on a wall by Dan Ashcroft. "Totally Mexico!"
Heh, forget about that show. Think it was in this where a character carries his collapsible scooter onto the bus? Didn't use it, just a fashion accessory. Remember laughing hard at the time but we didn't know the half of it back then.
The parody here was actually rather than the politicians avoiding the questions (especially in the era this was made), but that he's the one instigating it, and they were being actually open and on topic
Chris Morris , is an absolute genius , he spawned alan partridge as a sports reporter , numerous familiar faces cut their teeth on his shows which sailed perilously close to the wind , very dark and very very funny , which reminds me , you must watch Green Wing , equally dark and surreal
Chris Morris is a genius- I’d recommend the full series as it gives you a great appreciation of what they all did then go back to Brass Eye and Jam, both will make a lot more sense then x
That Brasseye episode was ripping into the British media and their sensationalist reporting of that particular subject around 2000/2001 and he got it spot on. It received a record number of complaints from people not understanding that it wasn’t laughing at child SA but mocking the OTT reporting of it in the media.
The irony here is that my old pal who was a massive fan of Chris Morris now himself writes all the sensationalist p*do news on our local newspaper. The very people that Chris Morris was ripping into.
The Chris Morris news character is based squarely on a notoriously cynical senior BBC TV journalist called Jeremy Paxman. On his 'Newsnight' programme he had a reputation for giving slick, well-briefed, evasive politicians a really hard time, and many of them were terrified of him. Chris Morris has mastered all of Paxman's mannerisms and inflections. The sh*t-stirring is brilliantly done. If it weren't so funny it'd be scary.
I don't think boomer's patrons care too much about what he might like, but more their own personal taste. He'll be watching Steptoe & Son and Keith Lemon before he gets around to The Day Today or Jam.
Yes!! Finally!! Chris Morris is a bit of a hero of mine. I was lucky enough to meet him many years ago when he came in to do the special features for the DVD versions of The Day Today and Jam at Tangent where I worked as an editor. He also collaborated with my boss Adrian Sutton on the music fo Jam, the Brass Eye special and My Wrongs. I've met him a few times since then. Very funny, incredibly smart man. Anyway - Glad to see you enjoyed it! I've left loads of suggestions on Patreon of Day Today clips including some with Alan Partridge. You definitely should react to the whole shows - they're brilliant. This has made my day!
You should add The Day Today and Brass Eye to your list. The only caveat is there's a lot of references to not just British only news, but news that anyone under 40, even if British, wouldn't get
Christopher Morris and crew were involved on on a radio 4 comedy which was a parody of radio news , the Alan Partidge character was peripheral then and just did a short sports broadcast , it was called on the hour and it is f ing brillant
Reminds me of that day back in 2014 when I woke one morning and news reporters were suddenly saying a new word: 'Isis'; or 'Isil'. (I remember thinking "whoever these Isil people are they've got unbelievable PR power".)
yes he damn well is, Patrick Marber, and the brit politician is Alan Partrige`s old head master, remember he did the school talk "rubber up guys" "see you in Strasburg" and Denholm renholm was also in it as the head of the farmers union. "I`ve seen big eared boys on farms"
Chris Morris has pioneered modern satire , comedy and debate. He shows us how the public is brainwashed by mainstream media who use subversive and coercive methods nto believing anything they present as fact. He is a comedy genius and the establishment/ press try to silence him and others who find comedy a threat to their power.
Partly, but mostly that media outlets spend a lot of time and money preparing this kind of "exciting" coverage in times of conflict. It was all ready to go, they just need the spark. The joke is they'd rather have a war as it's not anti climatical like peace is, and their preparation and money won't have gone to waste.
This was so different and out there compared to most other stuff on TV at the time. Well done on checking out the paedo episode - the drug episode, about the new drug Cake, is another that's fun to watch but maybe also not for public sharing.
A chanced upon the Day Today with their "Fir Q" the rapper segment. I didn't know it was a spoof show, it was so well realised it took a good few minute before the penny dropped for me. Glorious. I became a Morris fan that day.
Part of the joke that I think Boomer missed is that the two panellists were in agreement at the start but because the news anchor wanted them to argue with each other to the absurd outcome of a war he kept twisting their responses when redirecting the questions. It's brilliant satire of the news that doesn't want panellists from different sides of a debate agreeing with each other/finding middle ground (because it makes for boring TV in their minds).
KB is right about how infuriating it is to see talking heads blithely call for sanctions/military displays of force/air strikes/boots on the ground, etc. when they are rarely ever the people who will suffer the consequences.
It's the presenter who is orchestrating this war - not the guests. "Hey, my work here is boring - let's start World War III!" My poor ribs hurt from laughing so hard! Absolutely brilliant! 👍🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👏👏👏👏👏
KB have you realised yet that the presenter here is Denholm Reynholm from The IT Crowd? Chris Morris is a feckin GENIUS. Please please react to Brass Eye! The shit he got away with on a terrestrial network is unbelievable, and it caused a LOT of controversy at the time!
ah finally some good uploads, chris morris is awesome. xD pls do more jam reactions or react to the full show. you can upload to youtube without copyright so its a no brainer.
The sketch isn't mocking politicians calmly talking about war because they wont be affected... Chris Morris manages to create and escalate an entirely unnecessary conflict, all the way up to the point of war, off the back of a cordial trade agreement where actually the countries are in good standing with one another, all because it's good for the show that is 'the news'. Whilst politicians are not safe from the ire of The Day to Day, it is primarily about news becoming a source of entertainment despite appearing incredibly serious, putting viewing figures above all else.
KB Mentioned 'Knowing Me Knowing You' and I've been looking forward to reactions to this, some people go straight to 'I'm Alan Partridge' but I reckon KMKY is an essential precursor to that as it describes Alan's arc before the motel situation - especially the climactic Christmas episode. I think of KMKY as creating the mould for slow burning cringe-comedy, something that came to fruition in 'The Office..
