In Nagano in 1998 Philip Boit from Kenya was competing in 10 km. He came last, but Dæhlie insisted on waiting for him to finish before they did the medal ceremony. Later Boit named his son Dæhlie Boit after Bjørn and they have been friends and kept in touch.
@@steinarhaugen7617 good question. I would change to only Ruud brother. Birger. I think Marit B., Ole Einar and Laila S. Nilsen should be Top 3. But Bjørn Dæhlie as #4. But it's a tough choice. We have way too many extremely good Winter Athletes. We have a luxury problem. Lol.
Im suprised Marit wasnt higher and i have no idea how bjørndalen wasnt on this list considering how big he was a machine for sure! Would be cool if he looked up Marit on pictures she is the most ripped woman ive ever seen
Petter Northug used to win most sprints he did. Ole einar bjoerndalen did decathlon for 20 years and competed in the world elite as a hobby to stay in shape by the end and would win over the 20 year olds every now and then being almost twice their age.
No Oddvar Brå or Ole Einar Bjørndalen is kinda sus to be honest. Also no Petter Northug, Thomas Alsgaard, Lasse Kjus, though it's cool to honor some of our older Olympic heroes, but I get it there are waaaay too many amazing winter athletes to mention in a short comment.
You have some quite fantastic representatives in skiing in the US: Alpine: Linsy Wonn and Mikaela Shiffrin Crosscontry: Sadie Bjørnsson and Jessie Diggins
This list was rather strange. I would say for Americans Stein Eriksen is the most famous Norwegian skier. Gold medal in the giant slalom in the Olympics 1952 and 3 gold medals in the World Championships in 1954, before he moved to the United States and became the most famous ski instructor. He died in Utah at the age of 88 in late December 2015.
Yeah, it’s weird he isn’t on the list. I’d put him there before Thoralf Engan or one of the other skijumpers. Speaking of skijumpers, I feel like Espen Bredesen deserves a spot. Going from last place in the small hill and third last in the big hill in the ‘92 Albertville Olympics to winning gold and silver in the same events in the ‘94 Lillehammer games is quite a feat. He also won the ‘93/‘94 Four Hills Tournament and the ‘93/‘94 FIS World Cup that season.
Many more could have just as easily been on that list, from the top of my head Petter Northug (cross-country), Ole Einar Bjørndalen (cross-country skiing with shooting, not an air gun like Tyler said, but a rifle), Lasse Kjus (downhill), Therese Johaug (cross-country), Espen Bredesen (jumping), Vegard Ulvang (cross-country), Stein Eriksen (downhill) who might have been just as famous in America as in Norway since he moved there after his athlete career and became a know ski coach and "ski missionary" at American ski resorts.
Number 8: Laila Schou Nilsen also won a bronze medal in Garmish Partenchirken in 1936 (the Olympics) and was the only one of the three on the podium not giving the Nazi salute, she was also world champion in skating twice and she set 6 world records in skating + much more. She was also in the first olympics wintergames after ww2 in 1948 st.Moritz i think it was. So she was a very active woman to put it easily.
And king Olav v became the world champion in sailing in 1978, he also was an olympic goldwinner as a crownprince in Amsterdam 1924 or 1928. Seilerkongen var han kjent som, frem til han døde i 1991.
I miss a few, that should have been on this list. Therese Johaug, Vegard Ulvang and Thomas Alsgard. And there are a few more ski jumpers to. Not to forget the alpine genius Finn Christian Jagge.
I would love for you to watch a video on Norwegian Winter olympic domination... or maybe the highlights of som of the best/most thrilling ski races in history..... and btw.. USA has one of the best Female Cross country skiers (Jessica Diggins).. she took silver and bronze in the last olympic games. and team sprint gold (she is one of the best ... behind the norwegian.. lol) Diggins is one of my favorits, because its always fun when SOMEBODY can at least give the norwegians a run for their money... (when its not a swede)
yeah, they use real rifles and ammunition.... the Ski Biathalon sport grew out of the Nordic Military ski patrols... when soldiers used to ski and shoot during war.
Therese Johaug is among the top 10 and is surprised that she is not there. You should search for Therese's career, she was just as good as Marit Bjørgen. Others who should have been there were Ole Einar Bjørndalen, Petter Northug and Aksel Lund Svinndal.
Fun fact for you. I got hospitalised a few years ago. My VO clocked in at 100. The doctors and nurses tryed 3 different aparatuses. No one would belive it. I had spent a few months in the woods in the winter. Played the tuba in my uthe, worked in construktion in adolthood. Fresh air is good for every living being. Oh yeah, i have ben smoking my intire life. Best regards from Norway.
I think there are some people who shoud be at this list such as: Ole Einar Bjørndalen, Petter Northug and Therese Johaug. I think this article was very focused on ski jumpers even though it had some people from cross country and alpine. It also forgot to mention that Marit Bjørgen is the most winning winter olympian of all time for both men and women.
You actually have quite a few American ski jumpers who currently are cooperating with the Norwegian team! The American ski jumping record is really good - 244,5 meters/ 802 feet set by Kevin Bickner. There's also a couple of hills in America. Ski jumping was introduced to America by Norwegian immigrants who helped build hills and even joined circuses to show the sport to people all over the country ☺
When Swedes watch cross-country skiing, we think that we are really only competing against Norway. Was there a third country that won - "ok, but did we win against Norway?"
Was going to say: not sure why you said the 10 most legendary "norwegian" skiers of all time. But the guy that made this list was on some heavy drugs. Not adding Lasse Kjus and Ole Einar Bjørndalen and Petter Northug was bad, but not adding Fridtjof Nansen, Torstein Skevla and Skjervald Skrukka was criminal. Roald Amundsen should probably also be pushed in there. There is heavy competition for this list.
I have a picture with Kjetil Andre Aamodt, he came to my school back in 2014 asking for my Vote for opening winter OL in Oslo. He seemed down to earth, and very friendly. :)
USA has several really goid cross country skiing. Jessica Diggings is amazing and american. You also have several in alpine skiing, so maybe you also should dig into your own famous skiiers? Would be fun to see you react to that 😊
Best wishes from Norway. It’s total snow chaos here today. You would think we now what to do when the first snow arrives. But it’s always chaos the first day of snow😂
i think you should look up the highlights of Therese johaug, Petter northug and Ole einar bjoerndalen. you will be sitting on the end of your seat! they are some of the younger top list skiiers!
Your pronunciations where mostly on point and the only sounds that was a little bit of (like the "kj" sound) are odd sounds that Norwegians don't always agree on, so no wonder that it was a little bit weird. Honestly I think you did great, and I appreciate the effort. 10/10
Marit may only come in 5th place among Norway's most famous, but she is ranked as the world's best and most prominent cross-country skier of all time, both men and women included. B. Daelie: 29 (17 gold) Olympic/WM medals ; most prominent male skier M. Björgen: 41 (26 gold) Olympic/WM medals ; most prominent male/female skier
@@Henrik46 Daehlie might have won the long races against Björgen, but not the sprint - and if you look at the medals, it's easy to see who was more successful of the two. Men often have an advantage in strength sports, but in sports where strength is not decisive (shooting, curling, darts, golf, etc.) the conditions are tied.
Yeah, I think she´s deserved a lot higher rate. I don´t understand how they´ve rated them on this list, though. But Marit and Bjørn definately stands out at the top for me.
There is a lot of skiing in USA! Didn’t you see the 2002 Winter Olympic games in Salt Lake city? Jessie Diggins is a great cross country athlete. Bode Miller was a great alpine athlete. Last year, the elite of ski jumpers competed in the USA. So it sounds so strange to hear you say that you don’t have ski athletes or skiing arenas in the USA😅 YOU DO!
Bjørn Dæhlie actually broke his back training on roller-skis in the summertime, cutting his career short while still at the top. I'd put Marit Bjørgen closer to the top, but Birger Ruud is a true legend of all time. The biathlon (where you ski cross country and shoot a rifle) legend Ole Einar Bjørndalen ought to be on this list.
Most of Norway's Olympic medals come from cross country skiing (and ski jumping). In the far more exciting alpine skiing events, many countries (incl. your own) have produced champions.
Marit Bjørgen is not just "one of the best", she is the single greatest winter Olympian of all time. Of all time. Why she is not at the top is beyond me, and why this list was missing out some of the greats is beyond me.
The "VO" is the amount of oxygen the body can take up into the blood from the air you brathe in. So a VO of 96% is VERY high!!! I never competed in anything, but I used do train a lot!! And at my max VO I was around 65%. As I said, 96% is about as high as ANYONE can possibly get. :)
Ski shooting (biathlon) is not with an air rifle but a .22 cal. It used to be a .30 caliber, but travelling from country to country with thay kind of gun in inconvinient. In Europe there are countries with very lenient gun laws (e.g. Switzerland, Finland, Norway, Germany) but also countries where gun laws are extremely strict (Britain, Poland, Russia). In reality biathlon with an American M1 Garand or German M98 Mauser was fun as long as it lasted, but it got too complicated. Loud bangs from rifle volleys used to be a part of the charm. Now it seems the .22 LR is becoming a problem too. That is quite sad, actually. Biathlon with a laser pointer (as I have vitnessed) just isn’t my cup of tea.
WHY do you not know anything about american cross country skiers? You have one of the words best cross country skier that we all love becaus she is a fantastic person! Jessie Diggins en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jessie_Diggins Olympic Games Gold medal - first place 2018 Pyeongchang Team sprint Silver medal - second place 2022 Beijing 30 km freestyle Bronze medal - third place 2022 Beijing Individual sprint World Championships Gold medal - first place 2013 Val di Fiemme Team sprint Gold medal - first place 2023 Planica 10 km freestyle Silver medal - second place 2015 Falun 10 km freestyle Silver medal - second place 2017 Lahti Individual sprint Bronze medal - third place 2017 Lahti Team sprint Bronze medal - third place 2023 Planica Team sprint
Well you have Jessie Diggins, se is still active cross country skier and one of the best in the world. But female athletes don’t really get any attention in the US and that is sad. She won Tour the Ski, Olympic gold medals, world champion several times. So if America wanted to they could appreciated what she is doing. You also have Kikkan Randall that have done very good. 😊😊 And I’m down hill/alpine you had many many good ones
This list is not proper. Marit Bjørgen should be among the 3 best. Ole Einar Bjørndalen should be at the top over Bjørn Dæhlie. These 3 should be at the top..
Please go away. Yes he doesn't know much about anything happening mostly in Europe, but so what? Everyone here watch his videos for his almost childlike entusiasm.
