@Catherine Wilkins indeedy doo it is. When I served, there was a white piece of canvas called a frog. Positioned in to that was the metal scabbard where the bayonet is stored when not on the rifle.

Hi Ashley, I’m ex Queens Colour Squadron (QCS). Part of the Royal Air Force Regiment. This squadron represents the Royal Air Force during Royal Duties (Buckingham Palace, The Tower of London Etc), they also represent the Royal Air Force at public military tattoos, air shows, and remembrance parades. All the guys you see here have a good memory. They shall be counting each step and remembering each movement and direction of travel. This is all they do each week, day in day out and they all have an input/say when putting together a new drill show. They are very proud of what they do, and their equipment and uniform is kept immaculate. During the winter periods, they practise field duties - Soldier, field craft and weapons training. So, if you are smart, good memory and can count, QCS is for you! 👍

Hey man, I'm ex-Canadian infantry. Way back in 1988 the QCS performed at the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo. I was staff, in charge of accommodations for the international groups. I got to know 3 members, Jim Smith, Andy (forget), both Sgts. WO1 Doug Strudwick, and FO Dallas. The tattoo was in late June-early July, and in Sept. my regiment departed for Fall Ex in Germany. When leave came, myself and 2 mates (all of us Sgts, one who was also staff at the Tattoo.) When we got our leave we popped over the channel and showed up at your doorstep in Uxbridge. We spent a week, and I don't think we paid for a drink in the mess. The Mess Manager even extended Planters b'coz we didn't have jackets...lol. Had a wonderful time. Surprised a few people too.

I've heard for theses types of performances they usually start rehearsals months in advance. Basic drill which is just marching in unison is part of their training from day one of joining the armed forces. Coordinated marching like this looks impressive as a display of training and discipline, but try looking at the bands playing while on the march the extra complexity makes it even more impressive. The household bands regularly do the pin wheel manoeuvre which always looks impressive. You might be interested in watching a complete trooping of the colour. This is the jubilee year so you can expect a great show this year.

Hi Ash, this was filmed at the 2017, Virginia International Tattoo. Military units from all over the world display here, Edinburgh hold a very big one every September. Btw, the band is the US Airforce Heritage Band.

Years ago, my Father was a RAF drill instructor. He did it had a few RAF Stations. We lived on camp at the time and were warned in blood curdling terms, lol, to stay away from the parade ground. However if it was the school holidays we would sneak around, little gangs of us, and watch. I heard him shout at an officer Cadet once, You are a Bleddy Eejit, Sir, What are you? I am a Bleddy Eejit Sgt. lol. Dad was iIrish. In his mid fifties and in hospital a surgeon said to him, you have one of the best developed pairs of lungs I have ever seen. I have only seen this on an opera singer. Do you sing. He did. in the Church.. tenor.. but not for many years at that stage.. he offered this up and then said, could it be shouting at peopleon the parade ground doctor.. She said.. Yes..that will be it! lol. Voice projection ws the thing of course. I know.. i ws on the receiving end of it often. lol. it wa the 60s.. a different time. lol. The white belts were webbing which back then.. not sure about now, Dad had to scrub clean each time.. get the old blanko paste off it.. it would quickly yellow.. and repaint it. It would be on newspaper on the kitchen table. He woud have all the brass fittings off and his cap badge.. shined it up with Brasso.. and ditto the brass buttons on his tunic. He woud also have a glass like finish on his parade shoes. I oined the police in the eighties and we had to blanko our gym shoes and they always could tell who didn;t wash it off each session. I did.. early training at home. plus although we didn;t have to I had a glass like shine on my shoes. We had ex service men who used to trade starting off our shoes for us.. if we did some of their shirt ironing. After that I did the shoes myself.. water in the lid of the shoe polish and work it in in then polish off. My broterwas in the Royal Navy and said seeing Dad take care of his uniform and how strict he was with our apearance before leaving the house stood him n excellent sted when he joined the RN

Sodding Rocks. Beasted me for 10 years on my CCS. And that thing on their belt is a bayonet scabard. It holds the very sharp knife thing that goes on the end of their rifle in case they want to emphasise their intent without wasting a bullet. The choreography is called drill. I annoyed them by calling it formation posing. Probably why I got beasted.

QCS is the RAF Regt, nickname rock apes, the RAFs ‘infantry’ .A very good fighting Regiment of which this is just one squadron that doubles as a fighting unit and also represents the RAF at displays like this and anywhere the Queens Colour goes. Proud to have served, once a Rock always a Rock. Our motto is PER ARDUA(through hardship). I had no chance of going QCS when I was in, too short.

Hi Ash. Its called a Sash, the Army wear red sahses on their dress uniform and the RAF wear blue. Historicaly the red sash was worn by senior NCO's (non commisioned officers). The tassels or strands you see where used for counting the dead after a battle. The NCO would pull off a tassel for every dead soldier. Hope this helps.

The show display is known as continuity drill, theres some really good groups & militaries who do these sort of things & depending on what you plan to do it can take a few wees to several months to practice it to the standard above. The New Zealand Army Band, Norwegian Kings Guard (HMKG), the QCS (Queens Colour Squadron) who are in this video, the Top Secret Drum Corps & Royal Marines are just some I know off the top of my head. The Edinburgh Military Tattoo has more stuff like the above.

Hey Ashley! I know these videos are short but it's kind of related and I thought you might like the history. After the attacks on 9/11 for the first time in history The Queen authorised her Guardsman to play something other than our (UK) national anthem. They played the star spangled banner as a mark of respect for the fallen and the Americans who were in London at the time who needed somewhere to turn too. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ToECtXPMvNM.html She authorised it again to mark the 20th anniversary, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-P8hEzsKn954.html I know its sad that it happend, but you seem to have a great love for our sense of humour and differences, and it was just an example of a time when we've stood together with you, and I thought you might appreciate that bit of history. 🤘 Keep rocking the awesome videos, stay safe! ❤️

The BRITISH dont seem to have a problem with marching, even the women. When I was young we had four marching bands where I lived. The band I joined was where I met my husband. I got my parents, brither, to join when my sister was old enough 15, she also joined, later on my younger brother who was 22 years younger than myself joined anotherband with my son, who is 2 years older than him. All the men learned to play brass instruments, I did as well. The only one we had a problem with marching was my Mother, She was hilarious. Our Drill Instructor ex RAF nearly gave up on her. He went to live to live in Canada for a few years, came back to see my Mother marching on the front row of the band. He was amazed 😊 Happy Days. I have problems today walking across my living room.😂.

hey Ashley I am ex ex RAF and was involved with the exact performance you are reacting to so ive opened a note pad to try answer you questions in one go. yes the white sheaths hanging of the belt is the scabbard for the bayonet. it is fitted to the rifle during the show when we do the close pass with the rifle spining. secret the display bayonets are blunt incase of accident. no the gloves were not changing colour, that was effet of stage lights. 63 squadron is the coulour suadron to the Royal air force. you will have seen vidio of the guards at buckingham palace . the colour squadron is the RAF equals to these guards. I'm sure being one of we were better them
