That tree on the edge is when the co-driver gives the instruction, "Don't cut." This means: do not cut the corner and stay on the road rather than trying to take the corner early. There are a lot of those in a race and sometimes they are there for the driver's safety (believe it or not). There could be a nasty obstacle deeper into that corner that if he cut it, would put them in a river, head on into a standing tree, or sucked into a deep ditch.

Very true, and as a former co-driver I will say we took care to note and emphasize severe hazards in our pacenotes. Alan mentioned walking the stage but in reality (in the 80s and 90s) some stages were 20 miles or longer and the onus is on the driver and co-driver not the organizers to avoid hazards.

7:55 The organizers do not have to clean up anything like logs by the road. Before the race, drivers and co-drivers go through the individual stages in a civilian car and write a schedule and notes where, if they do it correctly, they should have it written as "don't cut"
@EleaRevils

Indeed. They are called pace notes. In this case it would have been something like " short hard right , don't cut , tree inside. "

i used to go and watch rally GB in the 80's during the group B years in between stages the drivers would park in car parks near the next stage to avoid time penalties by arriving too early they would chat away with the fans until the co-driver screamed at them that they had to leave forrest stages with no access roads mean you get to a good vantage point by running down the road they are driving on between cars (warning whistles to let you know they are coming) even more exciting at night if a car went off the road the driver would call for the crowd to push them out of ditches or even right overturned cars talk about hands on
@jackh5489
@jackh5489 3 месяца назад
There's a saying in rally: "Only the driver can win a stage, but the co-driver can loose it", referring to, if a co-driver reads out his pace notes wrong, the driver may crash the car. What probably happened with the Lancia and the Opel going in the water and that Ford hitting the stub in the inside of the turn, that stub should have been noted in the pace notes and clearly told to the driver by the co-pilot. The stage has been meticulously inspected pre race, for the pace notes, but then again, the driver might have cut the corner to tight, obstacles are a part of rallying ...Also, the stages of course vary in length, but it's not unusual that the top cars are within a few seconds of each other after a ten mile stage, so every split second counts.....why they push to and beyond the limits.

2:53 takes just one missed direction, maybe written notes a corner a 7 but its 6 that all it may take to over cook it and you end in the drink. such a fine balance when you close to limits, conditions may change, another car could put a lot mud from side road on the road or a lot lose gravel then you may have to much speed. love driving these narrow roads in uk, but got to drive as public road someone maybe coming other direction around a corner but room for one so corners you must be a speed you stop but areas still very narrow you see far ahead maybe few drop off's / jumps you can get to 60mph it feels like 120-130mph if not more its loads fun,not like rally it closed road and one way so really go for it but for normal daily drive you can have a lot fun if you know the road and built up to it learn car and how it reacts,my current i20 don't like drop off's like my old fiesta so got to take it a bit more easy on those as you may have few inches to edge road and wall or tree. so much fun but only when see it safe if i screw up it only me, no people,entrances,junctions, and road conditions allow you have play but know your limits have your fun then chill you always want to keep pushing small bit fun and chill between as soon get carried away. only once had back end out with no computer help as no esp,abs,tc bit hot in to a corner and wet and leaves , two option take it hot and deal with possible back end lose at speed or unsettle car entrance to corner and deal with a slide at slower pace that option i took an up hill right corner lift off over steer, fwd you still get back end lose. key thing i din't panic i upset the car seen what it wanted then adjusted, allowed side ways to burn or energy / speed and corrected for exit corner, back to PlayStation or Xbox days id always set car up so it twitchy, even i game was not as clean but life in danger you do not rush the car correct to early you really unsettle the car. only once that enough, rushing back mums house on holiday as hours late forgot one corner was so sharp other direction go a lot faster, one last corner before mile long straight, tend to drive them few times these days learn grip, so thats my experience bit rally in my city car done few forest tracks they fun but a lot slower, paved road bad condition i take any day over dirt road for a play safe play tho . and at least 60 feels over 120mph you get your excitement no risk driving ban if you have no people,entrances,junctions, and road conditions allow and be slow so you can stop before reach a corner then its as safe as it can be

I know that these cars look like they are going fast. Buy in reality they are going way much faster. Here in the UK the speed limit is 70mph on straight smooth motorways. These cars are averaging more than that on loose gravel tracks. I was once in a fast car with a crazy driver (professional). I had all my faith in her that she'd keep me safe. She took me around the TT coarse in her tuned up GTR. We went around corners I'd normally slow to 30mph for at 70+. She wanted to get 200mph out of her car. But with me as a passenger she got 197. Then it started to rain and she couldn't go and play. She blamed me for being too fat and how she would have got 200 if I was't in the car. I said "next year I wont have such a big breakfast and I'll make sure I have a big shit before we set off"... Not long after a JCB digging a hole in the road for fast internet hit her car and basically destroyed it. Buckled the roof and the chassis... I was just as devastated as she was. To see that car being destroyed. She'd had it custom built in the colours she wanted and tuned up by the manufacture. I felt so sorry for the guy in the JCB. Imagine having to phone your boss and say "I've accidentally hit a car with my digger"... Boss says, "That's ok, just give them our number and I'll settle it with cash"... "Ermmm. Boss that might not be so simple. It's a one of a kind custom made and tuned up GTR valued at £125,000..." "OH fook"

@JoriDiculous
@JoriDiculous 3 месяца назад
No time is taken off your laptimes for any reason. Only added. You crash, the clock keeps ticking. 7:40 driver error, or co-pilot forgot to say Dont Cut! I say driver. Remember, rally takes place on normal public roads, not special tracks. Obstacles are left in place, only the road it self is kept clean'ish but they dont repair it unless undrivable. The roads are opened for the Public again shortly after the race is over.

That's we europeans have in mind when we think racing... when the US people think racing is accelerate straight durinq a quarter mile, or running on an oval track. And that's why american cars had for so long big engines and poor chassis, when the european sportscars were so agile with so smaller engines. For us, turning is racing ;)

Well rally ( wrc) is run on up to 220 mi of stages on closed public roads so it hard to remove every potential obstacle beside the stages. I remember a story told by a famous rally driver, he sad that he raced one one stage so many times that he start to remember objects around road and start to use them as breaking point, so there was a farm beside the road that had a pole and he use that pole as breaking point before tricky corner for years, but one year farmer made some work around farm and he moved that random pole couple of meters further down the road and yea next year when he approached that corner he was looking for that pole and when he saw it he started to break but unfortunately he was a little bit too late and he crashed :D

Another pole story was with the spanish Jesus Puras, on a Mazda 323 works car, stage Sisteron-Thoard, Rallye Monte Carlo 1991. On his pace notes, a major brake point was "at the broken pole". But the pole had been repaired 2 days ago. He crashed the car in the next turn and his rally was over.
