I live in Frankfurt and have 1 Gigabit/s Internet - but: that is sadly an exception. Reason for that: in 1981 the chancellor Helmut Schmidt and his SPD gouvernment decided to build fibre optics all over the country. If that had happened we would be in a good position these days. The former Federal Postal Minister Kurt Gscheidle (SPD) presented a 30-year plan to the Federal Cabinet. Starting in 1985, the Federal Post Office was to equip one thirtieth of Germany with fiber optics every year. "With an annual investment volume of three billion marks, a period of 30 years is to be estimated for the expansion." But sadly he gets couped. His coalition partner, the FDP, decided to quit the gouvernment and to coalate with the CDU. However, according to Wirtschaftswoche, the next Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl (CDU) stopped the project. His minister of post and telecommunication is said to have had someone in his family who earned a lot of money with copper cables, because he had a company producing them. Most of the criticism is not far away, but slightly exaggregated. Compared to other countries we still like to complain on a high level. But if you don't face the problems it will get worse, so it is also the german way to be honest to yourself and your problems otherwise your not able to do it better...

2:40 Yes. 3:55 One of my bosses visited me in Münster, last year. He drove his Tesla. I live in the inner city (close to the Medieval city walls) and yet he did not find a single appropriate charging station that was near enough to make sense to use. 7:15 No, lol. Bureaucracy, overpreparation, analysis paralysis, caution before all else, that IS the German mindset. It's the stereotype of how we think and on average, it's true! Always has been. Change comes slooooooowly in Germany. Think of it this way: the political system was built specifically to resist change, so it wouldn't become the Weimar Republic 2.0. Try keeping up in a world that keeps changing faster and faster while you're a country engineered for stability and stagnation. And it's not just the system, it's the mentality, too (that started much earlier). We're habitual overthinkers, which is great for getting to the truth of a scientific question but not necessarily when you need new infrastructure yesterday. 8:50 Good in theory, not in practise. It's a bit like blind activism, like people glueing themselves to the streets to fight climate change. Achieves nothing, probably more of the opposite but it feels like you're doing sth. 13:05 I cannot see that happening, sadly. There is some major corruption ("lobbying") keeping coal as dominant as it is. And we can't well increase our production from renewables if we don't expand our infrastructure, which we stopped doing at a large scale in recent years. Germans are also irrationally fearful of nuclear power. People simply cannot rationalise Fukushima and Chernobyl. They see 2 major accidents and ignore the entire rest of nuclear power production. They see how long the byproducts last but don't realise how insignificant the total amount of nuclear waste really is, at a global scale. They might see more and more floods in this country and somehow think of climate change but not really make the immediate connection. A power plant blowing up, on the other hand, doesn't require a lot of mental faculties to register as dangerous. In other words, this is a feelings vs facts thing and the feelings won this fight a long time ago in Germany. Keep in mind that Germans are also *incredibly* superstitious. We almost lead the world in terms of relative use of homoeopathic quackery (Switzerland is leading that chart) and the other idiots are literally our (partially) German speaking neighbours. No idea why but people who speak German are apparently fairly open to snake oils. Oh and it isn't just about production capacity. We need more cables, simply put. 13:25 But she literally just explained to you that we're not. Did you not see the graph on us trailing in energy coming from renewables? You literally just saw it. We're not at the forefront. We may have been for a short time, at least a decade ago but no more. That's the issue. Everyone is sitting atop their high horse thinking we're oh so environmentally concious but we really aren't. We just got a reputation and then were happy to rest on that.

As an American who moved to Germany 7 years ago, I can assure you the internet here is exactly that terrible. I live just outside Berlin, and the fastest internet I can get is 80Mbps. A lot of what she said was a bit hyperbolic... However the root of it all is actual problems. My largest problem is electricity though, they claim to be super green with wind and solar. But the backbone is actually Lignite.. If you do not know what that is look it up. Its the DIRTIEST form of Coal in the world. And it is how they deal with spikes... "multiple times per day"

9:00 what happened to the project? Easy. After the people who built it got paid, it turned out that it didn’t have any practical use… classic example for wasteful spending on „grand ideas“ that looked great on paper.

She is wrong with the Nuclear power plant. It will take a lot of time (several years) and a lot of money (several billion) to build only one nuclear power plants. We hardly used them before. Also nuclear power is one of the most expensive energy source. It was strongly financially supported by the state. please also note: She is talking about "Energy consumption" not just electricity. That is why Oil is so hight. Eg. for petrol. In the same wikipedia article you can see the share of electricity and there 62% comes from renewable energy. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_in_Germany

The problem with our energy supply isn't that we create too little renewable energy, but the 'ancient' network and it's missing capacity to transport the energy. We already create so much renewable energy that we have to cut these from our network as the coal and nuclear plants can't be shut down as easily during energy peaks. With the current trend that you can setup solar cells even outside rented apartements we could provide the necessary energy easily with renewable systems. Due to the missing network capacity we currently only create 45% of the necessary energy with renewables, but e.g. China is already at 80%.

NA ,I wouldn't really take Sabine's comments so seriously . She's just comparing the internet , software , IT system to the big US giants like Microsoft, Apple, Facebook ,Google those corporations have monopolies on those things and don't share any of the advances or profits to the citizens of the US they keep it all to themselves. Germany is vastly superior to other countries including the US in many many aspects. She's just reminiscing of the Germany of the past and it's glories !

Sadly she is right. The German government - and it does not matter which political party used to be in power - made so many mistakes and wrong decisions within the last 25 or 30 years. Believe me - we´ve got about 700 parlamentarians but nearly 3000 lobbyists who exert influence on politics just priorotizing their own interest instead of taking care what is good and optimal for the country. This is why a political party from the right like the AFD is now at about 25 to 30% on votes. The folk is annoyed about the established parties and thinks that everything is getting better by voting for Nazis .... Watching these changes in society and politics with all that consequences makes me really sad and angry!
@Patschenkino
@Patschenkino 17 дней назад
I'm sorry, but it's inappropriate to use the term "Nazis" in this context as a swear word, a word that is now used so inflationaryly for everything that it is an intolerable trivialization of the actions of the real National Socialists. That doesn't translate well and shouldn't be an issue here. The AfD is a conservative, right-wing party, but nothing more. In a democracy, it's perfectly normal for there to be left and right parties.
@cymortevaale2514
@cymortevaale2514 17 дней назад
@@Patschenkino first of all it's important to differentiate between those who are voting and those being in leading positions. It would maybe not be fair calling those who are voting a Nazi. But since the afd is classified by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution as definitely right-wing extremist. Now we can talk about how close this extremism is to national socialism, but calling the afd a normal right wing party is at least as misleading as the comment you are criticizing.
@Patschenkino
@Patschenkino 17 дней назад
@@cymortevaale2514 The Federal Office for the Protection (Verfassungsschutz) is not a neutral authority, as one might think. Funnily enough, this authority even describes its former boss as a right-wing extremist. They are bound by the government's instructions. Incidentally, there is also a very interesting report by a former employee that reveals the authority's problems.
@cymortevaale2514
@cymortevaale2514 17 дней назад
@@Patschenkino well of course it's not neutral, it obviously is not on the side of a party which leading figures are anti-democratic. I agree, there are a lot of problems with this institution. That does not automatically mean that the reasons they came to this conclusion are flawed. I'm not even arguing that the afd should be banned or something right now. Extremism, as is, is a way to make politics. Not my way, but I would also always be pro a diverse democracy and I'm also a fan of having opposing opinions in the parliament. And if a population rolls with populism, then it is what it is. 'Well played' to whomever may gain the trust of the people. But at least let's be transparent with the intentions. Something pretty much no party of the current parliament is really able to.

@@Patschenkino Opposition to this madness? The AFD is the most backward-looking party in Germany! They are still arguing about whether climate change is real. Even more so than in the CDU/CSU. The CDU/CSU represented German industry in the Bundestag, which is driven by shareholder value and has been able to make good profits for decades without having a vision for the future, doing the same thing year after year. Meanwhile, the rest of the world was moving forward. Even China has changed its environmental policy and has installed more than 30% of the world's solar capacity. Meanwhile in Germany, people and politicians are all sticking their heads up their asses, celebrating can deposits and yellow bags and thinking that's enough. While in Germany the technologically leading solar industry died and with it technology and jobs. Now China is doing the business. The AFD will not change that. The opposite will happens, they will cancel the reforms that are really necessary now and Germany will sink like the Titanic because in the future nobody will buy the products, goods and technologies from the past, such as combustion cars. The same thing will happen as with fax technology, computer technology (e.g. Commodore C64) and mechanical machine tools - they will go bankrupt. While the urgently needed investments in the development of new storage technologies and batteries, where some very innovative small and medium-sized companies in Germany are currently leading the competition. Instead, idiots who neither understand that nuclear energy will not heat their homes nor have a clue about heat pumps will drive the last innovative companies into bankruptcy or abroad. The number of idiots in the Union is almost unbearable (especially Scheuer, Ramsauer, Dobrindt, Spahn, Söder, Merz, etc.) But the number of idiots in the AfD is still unbeatable. Even the right wing in the EU Parliament no longer wants to work with them. But I can already see from your post that you are not going to start thinking. You just have "your" opinion and "alternative facts" and opinions are like assholes, everyone has one and sometimes it's just brown.
