*Fun Fact:* The Main Samoa Squad never arrived to the game due to passport issues. So the youth American Samoa team had to fill in and 2 of the players were 15 years old. Some of the players had never played a 90 min game before. So it was unfair from the start. Still a banger of a game tho
They were a part of a youth national team, yet some of them had never played a 90 min match? There is no excuse for that, even when it is a small nation and it happened a long time ago.
This same team beat Tonga 22-0 two days before this match, so I don’t think the “Samoan main squad” would’ve done much better. I bet they were very happy to have “passport issues”.
Didn’t really matter since Australia beat Fiji 2-0 the next match. Not sure when he was put in again, but he definitely played another match since he scored 16 goals for Australia that year. Also, fun fact, he scored roughly half of his national team career goals (28) in that match.
Pretty sure he wasn’t dropped. Maybe rested or the squad was just being rotated. I’m an Aussie and I remember when we used to played these Pacific teams. Mostly we won by huge scores and then we lost the final World Cup play off to teams like Uruguay and Argentina. We only finally beat Uruguay in ‘05 in a penalty shootout to make the World Cup tournament after missing out for 32 years. Playing these terrible teams didn’t help us improve. That’s why we moved to Asian confederation, to play better teams.
I played football/soccer when i was younger and we once won 21-0. This was when i was around 12 years old and the games weren't 90, but like 50 or 60 min long
Fun fact: its not the keepers' falut its the players. The players played like they died yesterday, no movement, no activation to defend the goal. But on the other side keeper played his last atom off he even got some epic saves too!
@@willmcclard206 a keeper needs a defence. they arent elasticgirl so they cant stretch the entire pitch to save goals. from what i saw, the keeper defended what he could, and his defence played like shit. He wasnt prime Casillas but lets keep in mind he plays in samoa, not like he has the best chances to train and become better
Goalie: fuck this, this is australia ffs, i can embarace myself cuz of australia being a fucking master in this federation, i just wish they joined afc (they are now in afc, not in ofc)
17 years later and I stumble across this absolutely incredible footage. Best part is the commentary, he gives us some classic one-liners in there. 😎❤️😂
If you ever feel like you're too weak to get back up, remember that the American Samoa goalkeeper had to keep playing after the 30th Australian goal. The sheer strength to not just lay down and cry is such a motivation.
Commentator: GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLL Commentator: whew I can stop now Other Commentator: Uh they just scored again Commentator: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
In the highlights for that Leicester 9-0 win over Southampton, there were two separate moments where the highlights showed two goals in one continuous segment with no edits because they were so close together. I thought THAT was impressive!
Sad times... When my team starts thrashing other teams , I like to take the penalties. Heck I got a hatrick a couple weeks back. Not bad for a keeper who hasn't scored for the first 10 weeks.
@@dickyarya8204 On FIFA My Player career mode, it doesn't literally matter if you score a hat-trick and do the perfect match, if your overall is at least 1 or 2 points under the starting player from the position you're in, you get bench time
1:48 “Even the scorer lost count” Don't blame them, it’s not easy keeping up with such a… *hectic* game! Btw, this video is a Certified 2000s jewel. 😂❤
Man, that’s brutal. Played on an undefeated team in the late 90s in middle school. Well, at 4-0, coach started asking who wanted to play what. Our fullbacks played forward and I played goalie, anything to let the other team at least get one point. We sandbagged the rest of the game. I think it ended up being 5-1
@@joshuahagen3671 ok but would Australia have won the world cup if they had beaten italy in that game? absolutely not Most likely they would've gotten eliminated by Germany in the semi's
There are actually higher score names than hat trick. You so rarely see them that most people don't know what they are. They also have less impressive-sounding names. 4 goals is a haul. 5 is a glut. 6 is a double-hat trick. 7 is a double-haul (not sure why that one is 7, since you would think it would be 8). Alex Morgan scored a glut in the Women's World Cup against Thailand. The highest individual scorer in this game was Zdrilic, who scored a glut.
I played for a district team from the Adelaide Hills once. We got beaten 32-0. Twice. Same opponents. They won the league. I scored one of the 2 goals our team scored that season - from a penalty. So we only had one field goal scored the whole season. We were disastrously bad.
@@auto1nfanticid3 it's humiliating but not rude because why stop, I mean there is no such a rule, is there? And I also believe it is a record of some sort so it is ok for me (also pretty entertaining and food for jokes : D).
@@vasilispatrianakos6005 its unsportsmanlike. there is no rule but how can you get excited when your opponent is so pathetic? If they were rivals I would understand it, but cheering for this would be like celebrating being able to outrun a 5 year old or something.
@@auto1nfanticid3 yes, but it's their choice to make. Also if they knew that this were to happen they would like put on the second roster but they probably didn't so they just kept playing the football they knew. But i agree in the half time the coach should have told them to slow down and just have possession instead of more goals.
I had a match like that when I was 14. I literally just stood in the middle of my half for both halfs to at least catch some long balls, but haven't even got so far as getting closer than 10 meters to the ball
No cap when i was a little younger my father showed me this game and for the longest time i thought australia was the best footballing country in the world and i got suprised when they finished bottom of the table at the world cup lol
For refence, Archie Thompson wasn't dropped for the next match, he just wasn't Australia's starting striker at the time. Australia played a weaker team because of the circumstances of the American Samoa team.
