There's often a comparison in culture between South Africa and the United States. SA is considered a developing country while the US is seen as a developed one. The belief is that America is always ahead of SA on some aspects, but this is not always the case. The comparison often ranges from technology, food, hospitality, weather, etc.. Naledi Moleo unpacks the differences and some similarities with language and culture lecturer Dr Sipho Sithole and two of his American students Anastasia Taylor and Tatiana Allen.
Tune into Newzroom Afrika DStv channel 405 for more.

I am a naturalized American, originally from East Africa. I spent 5 years in Cape Town, moving between Retreat, Woodstock, Heathfield, Plumstead, Parrow, Muizenberg, Simons Town,... The US is great, but not a paradise or perfect or anything like that. The prob is, not only people in Africa and some parts of Asia and Latin America think of the US as a superior country by all metrics but equally so do Americans themsleves because most Americans don't even have a passport so they have not travel throughout their lifetime!! Not even to Mexico...!!!?? When I arrived in the US I had lived in South Africa and had spent about 7 months in Japan. I could tell a number of things where the US lagged behind in a clear and undisputable manner. And I am glad the professor pointed out about malls. Frankly, SA has some of the best malls I have ever seen in my life, and believe me I have been all over the world. And public transportation wise, Europe and Japan and China are by far better than the US. I wish I could get a way to stay in South Africa again, it is such a fascinating country: the Water Front, Cape of Good Hope, the Camps Bay, Hout Bay....

There is a lot to learn about African American culture especially the similarities in how black people lived during slavery and all the movements that were created to break free from that bondage, a bit similar to the movements made during apartheid for black people to be free from injustices. Most Africans think they can't learn anything from African American culture because of the immorality that is popularised in the media, however that is just a small portion of African American culture, just look at these two well spoken African American ladies taking an interest in African culture.

I’m Pedi and in Primary school I wasn’t allowed to speak my mother tongue with my peers but the Teachers could speak English and Afrikaans, I never protested against it I was just a kid so growing up I never used the pedi language consistently I feel like I lost Something that was supposed to be a part of me, It’s more than just a Language it’s my Identity, it’s who I am that was stripped away from me. Sometimes I even Reminisce on How people are viewed when speaking a language, People are looked down at for speaking a black African Language in the Middle class because that language is associated with the stereotype of a Black person from the township I’ve seen the preconceived notions and looks people give my family when they speaking Vernac, I decided to love my African Roots, to love my skin, my KINKY hair my fat lips and “round”nose I’ve taken Classes to help with me learning to speak Sepedi and I finally feel I’m connecting to something that’s just deeper than me, it’s something some people wouldn’t understand but Majority of Blacks would understand.

Americans that want to migrate to SA need to throughly learn and respect the culture because Africans do not hold back when it comes to their culture.. We're one of the most diverse countries and regions and many wars have been fought protecting our cultural heritage from Western influence so one innocent act can quickly be perceived as a deliberate act of defiance or disrespect if you lack the right knowledge , it's imperative to know that you will first have to white wash everything they have taught you about us. We're highly intellectual and spiritual beings that has kept their heritage and knowledge for thousands of years our social structures are very complicated and extremely rigid
