San Francisco native here. I was smart enough to get mm2h under the old rules before they changed. Nevertheless, love Penang so much, I bought a full seaview condo for half year retirement there. Malaysia is highly, highly underrated. Things you forgot: medical tourism, void of most natural disasters, fairly safe (no guns), and good central location hub for travel.

I hear ya.. Malaysia is right in the middle of exciting Thailand and Indonesia. Malaysia is just laid-back, relaxed and a very healthy environment for the 40s and above (for expats). There comes a stage in your life where all that partying is exhausting i.e. Pattaya, Bali, Phuket, and you just want somewhere peaceful at affordable costs.

My take on this, having seen so many traveller's vlog, most people think that there are no better place in the world to live apart from the US, UK and western countries. I spent some of my younger years in the US (high school & college specifically in Pittsburgh & Indiana) and also did a bit of travelling around the country from East to the West and from South/Florida all the way to the North-Buffalo/Ontario/Detroit) and my working life travelling the world i.e Europe, Middle-East, Asia and what I can say is...'There is no place like home/Malaysia'.

*If you want to party and have a ball, Muslim Malaysia is not for you. Go to Thailand and Bali, Indonesia instead. You'll have a fun of your life with wild parties, drinks and loose women.* *Malaysia caters more for Halal, Medical and Family Oriented Tourism. Its very safe, English speaking, a good place to raise children whether you're Christian, Hindus, Buddhist. No worries for Kids education. There's so many International schools available. For retiree, Malaysia is very relax and slow moving. Whatever the neighbouring countries can offer, beaches, mountain and forest trekking etc, Malaysia have it all. The cost of living (housing, food, transportation) is out of this world. The value for money is really second to none. Hopefully it will remain so. Medical Treatment & Cost. Try it once and you'll never want to go anywhere else. Best part, for a change of scene, you can always hop to any of the nearby countries, like Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia with cheap daily flight available. Malaysia is not heaven. But Malaysia is Truly Asia and To know Malaysia is to love Malaysia.*

I am in the final stages of applying for the Sarawak MM2H (it's MUCH cheaper than the mainland.) You've done a wonderful job of expressing a lot of how I travel, what I see, and how I feel in Malaysia. The selfie/influenced crowd is truly annoying. But that's the folly of youth. I do hate when they are carelessly intrusive or rude to the locals though. It just adds unneeded stress to the day. Rule number 1 of mamaks, hawker Centers, and stalls: minimal English both on menu and being spoken. Menu boards with nicks, cuts, fades,missing letters, taped over priced are a good thing - the scars of a long life of service. Longevity means greatness in this arena. Being the only mat saleh in several hundred meters means you're in a location to be feed well. Quality will go up and price down as that radius increases.

3 months in Malaysia and 2 months in Thailand are marvelous experiences, this is how I used to tell anyone about traveling to understand a country, many people just spend 1-2 weeks to travel few countries in one go, and make comment about the country is not right. Even for a big city like London, if you really want to understand deeply, at least 3 months period of touring around is a must.

Most digital nomads go to bali, thailand, vietnam and maybe philippines. Expats go to singapore and malaysia. There is a difference between digital nomads and expats. Expats work here and live here long term
@lylelaney8270
@lylelaney8270 2 дня назад
You can't say that for certain as there is no official numbers anywhere. Even before the whole digital nomad started, there were already foreigners working and living in Thailand, Philippines and almost all Southeast Asia. There are also a lot of foreigners who marry and live in Thailand and The Philippines where they actually buying properties (with their spouses) and startting business for decades now. Such is why many celebrities (and beauty pageant contestants) from Thailand and The Philippines are of mixed background. They also have integrated into the local societies. Try coming to Indonesia, you definitely won't regret it. And there are more tourist destinations to visit, the best culture and food paradises in the world than Malaysia. Indonesia has 17,508 islands spread from Sabang to Marauke. There are so many Indonesian tourist attractions that you can visit, such as: Bali, Raja Ampat, Thousand Islands, PIK, Labuan Bajo, Borobudur Temple, Prambanan Temple, Pink Sand Beach, Mount Bromo, Bunaken, Tumpak Sewu Waterfall Lumajang, Komodo Island, Toraja, Bandung, Jogyakarta, etc. Indonesia has many original cultures and the most delicious food in the world such as Rendang, Soto, Sate, Martabak, Nasi Goreng, Ketoprak, etc. Indonesia has a Jakarta-Bandung fast train with a speed of up to 354 km/hour with a track length of 142.3 km. Only 30 minutes to arrive in Bandung using the Indonesian fast train Whoosh. Many Indonesian foods and Indonesian culture are claimed by Malaysia such as Rendang, Batik, Wayang, Reog Ponorogo, Angklung, Pendet Dance from Bali, Keris, Pancak Silat, etc. Food with so many flavors, variants and spices only exists in Indonesia. Malaysia always claims everything from Indonesia, because Malaysia does not have a diverse and numerous culture like Indonesia.

Definitely an advantage to be born in a country with a much2 stronger currency. It makes moving to many2 other countries a lot cheaper. Anyway, you are right concerning dating. The wokeness and feminism in the US is scary. When it comes to that Malaysia is so much better for now. However, lately feminism has slowly creep into Malaysia and it's starting to get really annoying. I am just annoyed by the amount of "ladies only" coach, parking spots and they even have ladies only day at public swimming pools these days. My prediction is in the next 10-20 years radical feminism will start becoming popular in Malaysia if nothing changes. I am not sure if you are single or not, but if you are here for dating and looking for love. Better find one ASAP 😅
