Google "the earthquake of Lisboa", Portugal went from one of the most religious countries to one that does not care much for religion after a massive earthquake hit their capital city. The people went into their massive beautiful churches thinking god will protect them, sure enough god DIDNT protect them and many many people died in those churches, so when Portugal rebuilt their city they rebuilt the churches as tiny little boxes that look like any other building, you cant tell the difference between a church and a liquor store in Portugal because of this.
