I first came to know about Greg Davies when I watched a Best of Miriam Margolyes compilation from Graham Norton several videos back. I loved him immediately, and I got BIG recommendations for me to watch Taskmaster in the comments. So many of you said, "Oh- you have to watch Taskmaster," and now here we are! S1 E3 "The Poet and the Egg" :)

At the time Frank was probably the most popular person on the whole show. Alex said that he had to have dinner with him twice to get him on the show, because they knew that he will be a well known name with a good reputation. Romesh‘s career was just about to take off. As far as I’ve learned over the past months. I am not a Brit and not a native speaker but got sucked into the Taskmaster rabbit hole.. so that’s just what I’ve read or heard. And what I’ve understood.

I love when they start getting contestants that have watched several series of the show and have _desperately_ wanted to get on. Particularly when they're paired with contestants who really just couldn't give a shit.

It's so funny we're on season 17 now of this show live in the UK and you get tell they got to a point where they were like "we can't ever just let people take as long as they need to do something" which is probably smart 😂😂 lots more "you have 20 minutes" rather than just "say when you're done" 😂

The only contestant to use/show off his wealth more was The Pub Landlord (Al Murray) in Series 3. Definitely one of my favourite comedians to have been on the show.

@@DavidvsFilm At this point in time I'd bet that Frank Skinner would have more money than the rest of the cast combined. In 1996 him and his comedy partner David Baddiel (who features on a later series of TM) wrote "Football's Coming Home" which has become English football's unofficial anthem, it still hits the charts every 2 summers when there's an international tournament and will have made them astronomical amounts of money

A thing I've noticed watching this show is how i start a series being mostly unfamiliar with any of the contestants and a couple shows in I'm like "oh thats so typical of him/her" like I've known them forever. You mentioned "Cats does Countdown"...another great "game" show where the prize is nothing and more time spent entertaining than playing the game...so un-American 😂

We absolutely love this show. I haven't watched the first seasons in a long time so it is a blast re-visiting these. It is funny, I keep thinking about how badly I look forward to you seeing this moment, or that... but the problem is there are too many to count. I think season 2 is probably my favorite of the bunch, but then I think about all the insane moments with James Acaster, or Joe Lycett.... or ... or ... or... Yeah, just too many. Enjoy! Also, if you feel the need for a weird aside, at some point you should check out the tasks Alex set for the internet during COVID lockdowns. It was a great way to keep people entertained while stuck at home.

I was listening to Richard Osmand's podcast the other week and he confirmed that the contestants do not keep the items from the first task. I guess that makes sense when you see some of the crazy things which get brought in.

People that say 'you need to get through season 1' are slightly off IMO! The contestants are top tier in season 1, the TASKS are more padestrian. After season 1, the tasks start to get a lot more crazy, but that doesn't make season 1 any less enjoyable! :)

I enjoyed all of the seasons so far (currently at the start of the one that's now airing). I find that the chemistry between the group makes for the best seasons. So glad that you're watching it :)

@@DavidvsFilm I feel this way at the end of each series/season, but when a new one starts, I'm just as delighted to get to know any new contestants that I haven't seen before. And there are a LOT of great contestants/groups. This is one helluva rabbit hole, my friend; strap in and enjoy the ride!

The first time I saw Olivia Coleman was in Broadchurch with David Tenant and Jodi Whitaker. I was watching because of David but was really impressed by Olivia! Fan ever since.

Yes!! So I saw the American version without knowing the British original, also with David Tennant. Once I finished it, I learned of the David Tennant/OC version, and I immediately loved it more ;)

Frank Skinner having (co) made a song that will not die (football is coming home) should be easily the wealthiest. He was also around the longest and very successful. Josh and Romesh were just getting popular at the time. New Taskmaster hit a very lucky booking with them. These days the others may have caught up in popularity. And i sure hope Alex is paid much better now. Also Romesh has dropped that "i'm so angry, serious and miserable" act a bit. In a recent Wilty he was actually laughing a lot....

Been really liking Romesh lately in his new gig on Weakest Link where he can really show off his sarcastic wit and insults whilst still having the tone of friendly casual banter, he gets to be both serious and giggly.

People talk about Breaking Bad, The Wire, Fargo... I mean, they're cool shows, but there's no show I enjoy more and can rewatch more often than Taskmaster. I'm pretty sure it's my favourite show.

i think the reason qi poped up so much is because there is a pretty clear ranking in britsh comedy panel shows and it goes taskmaster 1st qi second then 8 out of 10 cats does countdown then the rest.

Good to see you enjoying these. QI is great. There are nearly 300 episodes over 20 years - though only the first 13 years or so are with Stephen Fry. Sandi Toksvig took over in later years and they've had some guest presenters for individual episodes. If you don't learn some weird little detail or three in every show, it's almost disappointing..

I've learned with UK shows there may be a few seasons/episodes that are slightly better than others, but you really just can't go wrong with any of them.

QI has a lot of overlapping comedians with Taskmaster. They go on both of the shows. I like that one too, but I wasn’t as obsessed with it as I was with Taskmaster for some reason.

Because the episodes are edited together after the tasks were recorded they'll generally put it together so that each contestant wins at least one episode in a series. Obviously this is not perfect because the actual scores aren't determined until the studio recording (especially the live task).

all of the tasks are filmed on three same day/week months before they go into the studio.

Hey you're baaaaack! Ok, the prize thing is weird. I've heard some stories about prizes being given back to the original owners, but there have definitely been times when the winner did take everything home. I think it depends on the cast as a whole, but the idea is they are allowed to take something home if they want to.... but some of these things they'll only take home for a day or something. I see you've reacted to the rest of the series on Ratreon. So an example is: Frank DID cash Josh's check but he gave the money back a while later.

Helllloooooo!!! How are you?? Yeah, I was dealing with a personal loss, so I was MIA for a little while. This makes a lot of sense! And I'm actually kind of glad to hear this because, even though I was relieved that certain items got returned to their owners, it kind of took the suspense out of thinking that some of these valued objects would be lost. Now I know that it's still technically possible! And "Ratreon".. haha, clever.

Frank was definitely the wealthiest and most famous contestant at the time this was recorded (I think the first episode he joked about having a couple of thousand pounds in his pocket) When Alex was trying the get the first series off the ground and wanted Greg as the Taskmaster he told him a couple of people he was hoping to get and Greg would only agree to sign up if Frank did and a couple of the others would only sign up if Greg did, so the whole show basically rested on Frank’s shoulders, there is a podcast that goes along with show if you are interested

Ahh interesting! So we have Frank and Alex to thank the most then haha. That makes sense about Frank being the wealthiest, and I remember the part you're talking about, but I wasn't sure. It seemed like he was, but I always think about the actress Jami Gertz being a billionaire (granted the vast majority of it is through marriage). Most people wouldn't look her on a panel, for example, and think she's the wealthiest.

Haha well you have 3 options as I see them.. you could wait week-to-week and watch for the first time with me; you could hunt them down and binge (not hard to find them on RU-vid at all - and for free!) then rewatch the highlights with me here each week; or if you could get advance viewings on my Patreon (I just finished Season 1 over there, and I'm about to get into Season 2). I loved frank on the show and have just discovered all of his stand up specials. He was more popular than I realized and it's easy to see why. Romesh was popular on panel shows, and a stand up and only saw an increase in his popularity since. Josh has also been a panel show staple, a comedian and a regular on the news satire/late show The Last Leg. Roisin was also a panel show guest, comedian and actress. All fairly popular while Tim Key was kind of the only person not as well known.

Hey! Hope you're doing well :) Yeah, I really like Frank's demeanor, so I'd be interested to see his stand up. Josh was the only one I remember knowing going into it (except Greg of course), due to seeing him on Graham Norton clips. Roisin just clicked with me personality-wise, and I can see where she and Greg would be friendly in real life. I'm increasingly wanting to see his show that they did together Man Down.

@@DavidvsFilm First thing I remember seeing Roisin in was the early seasons of a UK adaptation of the US's "Impractical Jokers", which whilst not quite at the level of your own 4 guys Sal, Murph, Joe and Q was a whole lot of fun to watch.

Some seasons there IS a clear winner, although it may be close during certain episodes. The show is very well edited in that respect. It's always fun as well when there is one contestant clearly worse than the rest, especially when they roll with it.

People said to stick through seasons 1 and 2? Wow, I think season 3 is significantly weaker than the first two... There aren't that many seasons of Taskmaster that I wouldn't rewatch but 1 and 2 are definitely in the top half for me
