It's his sentiment and all who think like him in the US that plant the seed for people to leave on there own timeframe. Anyone who has made the move knows it doesn't happen at the drop of a hat, it takes planning and a mountain of paperwork. So the better question is "How many people decided to leave the USA when they saw what the country was turning into?"

When there are multiple parties in a government, then they are required to compromise and work together. In the U.S. our 2 party monopoly prevents that and has devolved into a "my way or the highway" attitude. Not what I believe the founding fathers anticipated. George Washington was actually opposed to a party lead system, altogether.

Look what happened in Canada where I live. Minority government with maybe 35% of the vote. Gets elected for a second time even though they're ruining the country. Then they create a coalition with another even smaller minority government to hold on to power for two more years. Meanwhile, destroying the country even further for the next 24 months. By destroying I mean rising crime, economic decline, cost of living increase, taxation increase, etc. Government is no longer an institution that represents the people. They represent themselves first and foremost.

In Portugal he use the d'hont method for assigning of parliamentary mandates, you dont need 50% of the votes to get majority only need 40/41%. In Portugal there are a lot of guns but for personal defense you only can get a 6.35, what for Americans is a toy, larger caliber weapons are only permitted for hunting and there are several limitations such as magazine capacity and cannot be automatic. You also have a lot of illegal weapons but the sale of large-caliber ammunition is controlled or even forbidden.

Hi Dave, I totally love your content soon after I decided to retire to Portugal in June 2020. The political situation in the US was blowing up and being on lockdown was making everything worse. So I went all in on Portugal. I was living and breathing Coimbra. When the Golden Visa was modified, I didn’t blink because it didn’t affect me. Earlier this year, I began the process. I got my passport, my FBI background check, my NIF, my bank account (with the $10,000 deposit), I had my VFS Global meeting scheduled for San Francisco on Nov 17 (I just now realized that is TODAY!!!) The last thing that I had to do was to sign a lease in Coimbra and I was waiting to hear back from an agency. …and then… This video came out. …and then I read the comments. The one that caught my eye where someone was gleefully reporting on the change to the tax laws. Although I would’ve been grandfathered in, I saw the writing on the wall. The Portuguese people no longer care for the high inflation that the expats bring. So I pulled my $ from Millennium Bank and bought a ticket for Siem Reap, Cambodia. To qualify for a one year retirement visa here, you only need to be over 55 years old, provide one passport photo, show a copy of your lease and pay $390. That’s it. I’ll receive my visa in two weeks. Right now, on the day I was to be in SF applying for my Portuguese visa. I’m in a pool relaxing outside of my $250 a month villa, in Siem Reap, the Orlando of Cambodia. ips-cambodia.com/listing-details/rental/10778-1-bedroom-villa-for-rent-sala-kamreuk-siem-reap/

For those you wanting to move here, expand your search to include Northern Portugal. In 2019 we rented a small two bedroom house in Central Portugal for 650 euros, huge yard, all utilities included. Next a three bedroom apartment near the ocean in Sao Martino do Porto for 750, utilities excluded, Van life for two years, average 500 monthly excluding fuel, and now a three bedroom, huge yard, water included house on top of a mountain near Ponte de Lima. Here for a year, then back to the van life! Someday, I guess we'll settle down, but there are too many beautiful places to see and kind people to meet!

of course not. because this 'i leave due to politics' is in most cases just propaganda (usually left wing propaganda .btw, left wings are with islam the most antisemitic/antizionist antiwestern Nazis). it is also not true that the 2 party system in the US is worse/better than the one of other democracies. it just doesnt matter. and most relevant things for ppl in the US (and not just there) are usually driven by state politics anyway (where one btw. can have easier more parties) ....

left wings are btw. also the most antisemitic/antizionist and racist Nazis in the tradition of Hitler/NSDAP (together with Islam). 'right wing' is a left wing projection, not a real ideology - in difference to what most ppl believe (due to the inflationary mis-usage of this concept which just should obviously fit to a left wing view). it is lft wing who call others right wing (after the tradition of the old french national assembly seat order) - usually not ppl themself. while left wing call themself left wing. also the real Nazis (Adolf Hitler/NSDAP) which was a mixed-left wing movement (most intelletuals were Marxsts, ops, just like Mussolini. The real Fascists were also a left wing movement from Sicily) - also the real Nazis called OTHERS 'right wing' (the bourgeoisie - in the tradition i talked already about). no one called Hitler/NSDAP 'right wing' (made also no sense at that time): this wrong belief came after WW2 when again socialist dictator ship supporters tried again - also within the West - to twist the narratives and to combine Nazis with everythig which they consider as non-left. When Putin calls the Ukraine Nazis/Fascists (another projection) then this is just in the tradition lf all former (or actual) antiwestern socialist systems. Lula and Manduro are the same. They are the real Nazis and Antisemits/Antizioists. In South Africa the ANC/Tri-Party is a typical antisemitic/antizionist, racist Nazi system and so on ....

Thank you Dave for all the information on Portugal and sharing your fun adventures 🙏. One of the comments made recently regarding the proposal for Portugal’s stopping NHR D7 program in 2024 ( by some accounts the program will end on December 31, 2023! Not only will many Americans not be moving to Portugal, so will many other countries citizens. I, viewed a chart that shows the income/ financial earning to be as high as 48% taxable with an initial up front payment then the % taxed kicks in at the added taxable rate per income . Do you have such a taxable schedule to share to estimate taxable income with out the 10 year grace period. That would be a decidedly sure reason for anyone not to immigrate to Portugal . ☮️
@troublesometoaster4492
@troublesometoaster4492 8 месяцев назад
48% is only if you make over 78k euro a year! If you come here with an American salary (like working remotely), then do expect to pay upwards of 30/35% in taxes! However, the rest of your salary would be more than enough to live a somewhat luxurious life. It also changes by year in regards to the minimum wage (minimum wage isn't taxed, so the other tax brackets are changed accordingly), so by next year you could get 48% taxes only at 80k or more, I am awful at this math but I still know somethings, kinda.

@brunol-p_g8800

That’s the exact reason it’s happening. Property prices have gone up so much with the influx of wealthy foreigners that Portuguese people can’t afford to buy a house anymore, and have difficulties renting even in suburban and rural areas. It isn’t really the, wealthy, immigrants the Portuguese aren’t happy with, but the consequences.

Even if you have a choice of over 30 parties - like in Germany - many people still feel they have to vote for the smaller evil. Some even say that unless you vote for one of the major parties, who have been holding seats in the parliament, you support the far right. This attitude limits the free choice and doesn't give new, currently smaller parties any chance. Since all parties who ever were in power (and the same have been in power for decades) are responsible for the disaster we're in, new parties with new people and new ideas need to take over, but of course without any extreme and right-wing tendencies.

The problem is not the cult itself but the fact that that cult has a huge power in politics not only inside the US. The world right now is not a safe place. Authoritarian and totalitarian countries like China and Russia are in a cultural war with the West even if we don't want it at all. It's not a time for 1930s-type isolacionist policies - remember that those appeasement policies were the ones that lead to WW2 and the killing of tens of millions of people from 1939 to 1945. We in Europe have a full-scale war going on for already 20 months and freezing it won't be a solution as it would give Russian forces time to regroup and then attack again, and next time it could be any country in the Eastern flank of the EU (the Baltics, Poland, etc.). In regular times this would be very unlikely as NATO Article 5th exists, but with MAGA in power my biggest fear is betrayal to us (politicians would say "the country X is not our problem" and get away with it). That would lead to a world order collapse, but most Americans wouldn't do much because they are completely dumb when it comes to international politics and traditional mass media doesn't really help much.

We're still thinking of moving there, but it's hard given that the success of the friendly-to-expats program has put everything into flux. I'm not "against gentrification". I just wish people could figure out a way for the influx of expat money to benefit Portugal more than it hurts it. The Portuguese I've talked to still seem to think it's an economic gain, but there are sad side effects. I appreciate advice from you such as don't overtip. Anything on how on earth to find a place to live without causing the drastic rise in prices that is hurting many Portuguese people?

Don't blame yourself for Portugal's issues! The tax policies that benefit immigrants are the main issue because they were way too over the top. Seriously, you could do everything you wished for little to no cost: buying properties for tax breaks, getting visas for tax breaks, work online for tax breaks, breathing for tax breaks. These have been gradually toned down or completely abolished due to both left and right-wing parties pushing for these policies to end due to their effects on Portuguese people's lives. People are getting pushed out of even the capital mainly because of new hotels, lodges, and other tourism places aimed at milking Americans without them realizing it since the cost of living in the US is way higher, you come here and gladly spend €200 on a hotel room and €30 on a meal thinking that's a normal fair price... And this greatly affects your local small family-run restaurant that has full meals for €5, €6 with a dessert and a coffee. This is not due to immigrants and tourists coming here, but because we get no expat money whatsoever, it's only an economic gain for businesses that got a foothold in these areas, most of them owned by people who never stepped a foot on Portugal but got tax breaks because they got a property for the tax breaks. Our government messed up because they rarely regulate their policies, they kinda just go with the flow, and they're subject to abuse. For the medical system, the public healthcare system, while still one of the best in the world, it is bursting at the seams, especially in emergency rooms, which are full to the brim. This is also not due to immigrants, but because the government has severely neglected this and our educational system. Don't get fooled by people who say it's because everyone from third world countries are coming here to abuse our systems, as that is usually not the case, but is just an anti-immigration agenda. Rest assured that most of our parties, especially the two main ones, Liberal Conservative center-right PSD (a party kinda like the Democrats, very pro-universal healthcare and education but toned down on queer support, some wings are much more open about it but they don't come close to the right-wing Liberal party, which fully expresses their support) and Socialist/Social Democratic center-left PS, are pro-immigration and have continuously targeted their anti-immigration opponents. Liberal Conservative leader has publicly said on live TV a few months ago that they would not be working with anti-immigration, xenophobic, and racist parties, but never mentioned them until the regional elections a few weeks ago, where he mentioned the far-right Ultranationalist party (a weird mix of Republicans but somewhat pro-government intervention in things like benefits for people in need and taxing unfair profits in finance and other industries), the one that usually has the only anti-immigration ideals, making it a very safe bet for moving in, especially since their party is a trainwreck involved in internal dramas, illegalities (they were considered undemocratic multiple times by our courts), and so on, so they most likely won't last much longer. They are steadily climbing in voters, but that will most likely lead to a nosedive once they get some form of political power, as it has happened in Brazil, the US, and other countries. The only way to live here without causing the drastic rise in prices is to... Pray that our government changes their minds regarding most of their policies that benefit those who don't need benefits, but that will probably only happen by our next elections when PSD hopefully gets elected, or they form some coalition like their recent one in the Madeira island between them, Christian Conservative right-wing CDS, and center-left Environmentalist/Ecofeminism PAN. A lot of coalitions are possible in Portugal, and we even saw once our two main rivals, PSD and PS, run the country together for a full term, so who knows what the future holds. For now, we are just in a standstill, with one side being constantly on strike for better healthcare and education systems, housing, etc., and the other side deeply afraid that the economic liberal parties like the far-right one of the right-wing Liberals will get into the government sometime and finalize their dreams of privatizing healthcare and education, which would completely ruin the very little that we still have going for us. My hopes is that a party that is pro-Welfare State, which are pretty much all of them besides the two ones I just mentioned, get to the government and fix these issues that are shifting voters to those parties "as a protest"... A protest that could very well make Portugal look like the US in the rankings we are still above you, since those rankings are usually tied to our welfare systems (education, healthcare, safety, drug abuse, etc.). PSD Lisbon's mayor has been trying his best to balance the gross government incompetence and what little he can do to regain the city back from these issues. He has invested in social housing, way more than any mayor before, as well as culture, education, healthcare, inclusivity, etc. by opening new theaters, schools, and clinics, but it's a far cry from what can actually fix our country, and sadly he only wishes to work on Lisbon for now, so probably the only politician with the will to change how things work will never get to a national government office.

Thank you for this long reply. It looks as if maybe the government is about to cut back on some of the outsized "incentives" for rich expats. I was just back in France, where I used to live (where I learned how wonderful it is to live with universal health care, education, etc., and I won't go into some of the transitional the problems they're having now). But I was interested to learn that they have a second residence tax, which I think is a great idea. That means if you own a house and by another for vacation or investment you pay a tax in addition to the real estate tax. I'd love it if they had that in the U.S. where I can no longer return to my favorite beach town because all the property is now "weekend" houses for Silicone Valley billionaires. Anyway, it's not that I blame myself, but that I don't want to be part of a problem, even if it's one created by the government. We'll be back in April and may still decide to move there, but (though it will make it tougher for me) I do tend to think it's a good idea that they're ending the NHR (or are they?) and have stopped the Golden Visa.

@@user-ls8ey4mw9z You're welcome! I didn't plan to write it so long (this one will be the same probably), but when I start typing I can never form concise thoughts. Brain problems, I love them! Anyways, yes, the government is starting to bend to the pressure of every single other party, from society as a whole, and from the EU. That sounds like a good idea, but our government chose, again, to go way overboard with their politics, by trying to mandate that everyone who owns properties that aren't being used must rent them to the government so the government can rent them for cheaper to those in need... A good intention, definitely, after all we're one of the countries that took in Ukrainian refugees in our actual homes and you can actually register to become a foster family, completely negating the usual argument of "if you love refugees/homeless/etc. so much, why don't you have them move to your home?", but a really poor execution, since most people who had houses without use or on the rental market immediately sold them out of fear of losing their private property, further lowering the supply of houses for renting. I think it was toned down to where now you can choose to opt into this program, but the damage is done and landlord trust is lost. If I'm not mistaken, French government is liberal? The European definition of liberal (smaller government, less government intervention, etc.), so I guess they are toning down public services? All I've heard about recently was the higher retirement ages. Portugal doesn't have much liberalism, only recently our two liberal parties popped up into existence, so our universal systems won't go away soon. Even if our right-wing liberal party wins the elections (the far-right one would definitely be a huge mess, they're both constantly attacking each other as well), today I saw they just wrote a proposal with experts to reform our healthcare system, and rather than privatizing it, they want to extend the universal healthcare to private hospitals as well, removing the government intervention in most areas besides funding and paying for treatments, so that could be a good system as well. We did have some privately-run publicly-funded hospitals that were actually more efficient and cheaper that either fully private or fully public ones. If you do come, then rest assured that you will be welcomed here! Despite the loud minority online hating on Americans, the hate is usually towards the digital nomads as they have the most privilege, but they end up generalizing all Americans. Portuguese people are overall quite friendly and welcoming, as long as people do their part in integrating themselves into our communities, from making friends to shopping locally and avoiding expensive places.

The medical system won’t change much as long as you and other expats pay the taxes like any other Portuguese person. It is the taxes that found the health care system. Like in Spain where a lot of foreigners think healthcare is free, it isn’t, the Spanish pay for their healthcare through their taxes every month like you’d pay for an insurance every month.

In that case, I might actually stay. Trump’s presidency was a time of peace and prosperity that we can only dream of now. You just think it was bad because the news and social media was waging a psychological operation against you, so you wanted him out of office. This was done through non-stop shrieking hysteria that most people are not capable of tuning out. They wanted Trump out to make it stop, not because of anything happening to them personally or policy decisions.

Hi Dave, I like all of your videos. However, I have a few criticisms of this one. You say your are an independent registered to vote in Nevada. I am glad that you are keeping your American citizenship. Unfortunately, the reality in most of the United States is that there are two major parties and the rules are written to favor them. However, because of this, you must choose between the two parties in order for your vote to truly count. I am a registered Democrat. I believe that former President Trump is an authoritarian. He wants to do away with the U.S. Constitution. He believes that former Joint Chiefs of Staff Director General Mark Milley is a traitor. General Milley assured China that we would not start any military conflicts during the remaining two weeks of the Trump Administration. Former President Trump saw that as a traitorous act. He wants all shoplifters to be shot on sight. He wants to do away with portions of the media that do not agree with him. Specifically, he has mentioned MSNBC. He publicly has stated that the 2020 Presidential Election was stolen from him. Numerous recounts of ballots were conducted. They found very few irregularities. Thousands of people stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6th of 2021 to prevent the counting of the votes cast in the Electoral College. People died and were wounded because of this lie. He knows it is a lie. Your chart system for figuring out where you stand sounds scientific but politics is more about a healthy debate between people. Body language, tone of voice as well as doing your own homework to learn about an issue for yourself is much more satisfying. I take exception to your characterization of President Biden as befuddled old man. He has learned and forgotten more I will bet than either of us will in our lifetimes. We have one of the best economies in the world in terms of job creation and many of these will be in the Green Economy.

it is to an extend funny that Dave made a video about americans leaving if Trump , that is at least running as a right wing candidate, wins, when both in the north and east of Europe right wing political parties - that traditionally always have a stance in regards foreigners, have been politically weaponizing tax exception regimes such as the portuguese NHR - and alikes in Spain , Greece and Italy - and how unfair they are in regards current EU citizens, to the point the European Union is starting to take a stance - being that one of the main reasons why the NHR is being depreciated. Guess americans - or at least some - cannot get a break from the Right in either side of the Atlantic. ***ps I am not making a political point**** just noting that some US citizens may move to Europe if a right wing presidential candidate wins just to find that in Europe certain right wing parties are stating that tax exception systems often aimed at Americans are unfair for EU citizens.

Leftist parties also say the same! In fact, in Portugal, the party usually at the forefront of fighting these policies is the left-wing/far-left leaning Marxist BE, while the far-right Ultranationalist CH usually focuses more on attacking immigrants that do need aid, such as refugees. In here, Trump/GOP is considered far-right, it would perhaps break the scale, whereas Biden would probably fall more towards our center-right Liberal Conservative PSD, or perhaps even the right-wing Liberal IL, so that's maybe why Americans don't find our right-wing that bad, as they would be considered the left-wing in the US. That being said, my best guess is that Europe in general is tired of Americans, they're to us what Mexicans were to the US during Trump's administration, to the point where our walls are not built physically, but financially.

Trump is not 'right wing'. thats a left wing projection and narrative. 'right wing' does not exist as ideology. left wings of all kind (also Hitler/NSDAP as mixed-left wing movement) call OTHER ONES 'right wing' (in the tradition of the french revolution/old french national assembly seat order). they just call everything the dont want 'right wing'. its not real science, its ideology. usually ppl/parties do NOT call themself 'right wing' (of course due to the inflationary spread of this wrong sorting, it sticks always with some who dont see through such totally obvious framing)

When we were born, a nationality was bestowed upon us. With that nationality comes a bunch of rights and a bunch of duties. No one ever asked you if you agree with those, and... they never will. Any of those "rights" can be revoked at any given moment. As they often are. Which is why George Carlin called them: "privileges, not rights." Likewise, a new obligation can be assigned at any time. This means "some entity" (the state) believes to be the owner of any person born within its borders. Meaning, we are all seen as property... just like cattle. This also means the word "LAW" is absolutely meaningless, even though it carries a lot of simbolic "weigth". A real law can not be changed or broken. Like gravity. Also, they (real laws) don't require you to believe them. Regardless you believe gravity or not, if you jump from the 9th floor, you will smash your face. They (real laws) just don't care. (Insert a really, really, reaaaally sad face here.) So, what we all have are rules. And those change every single day. They are made to be bent and broken. Which is why any piece of property (money, car, house... country) truly belong to those willing to fight for it... and win. So, the only right you truly have is the right to fight, by whatever means you see fit. And THAT, is the LAW. The one that truly matters: YOUR OWN individual law. Just make sure you win. Only then you can be free. Dead OR Alive! Lol When we start talking about any ideology (wokeism, socialism, communism, ANY religion, etc), we are already too detached from reality because we already forgotten that all ideologies are utopian, totalitarian and obsessed with control. In the long term, there's nothing for the ordinary man on those. The reality is: If you are american, you cannot escape from your state. Your government has too much money, influence and reach for you to ever be free. That's why you always have to pay taxes regardless where you live in the planet. If a law is made in america saying "every american must return to the motherland in 6 months time", there's no way you can escape. If you are portuguese and you want to go somewhere else, you don't have to pay taxes to the portuguese state and there's no way they can get you back home, unless you pick the "wrong" country. Globalist ideologies (socialism/communism/fascism/wokeism/etecetera_ism) will put an end to all options. Until then, just pick your "freedom". You are free and welcome to do so.

You forgot one globalism. CAPITALISM
@federacaox
@federacaox 8 месяцев назад
@@rolflinThank you for your kind observation. I've been willing to expand on this topic.😉 So... Yeah, I thought about it. But capitalism is not an ideologic proposition, like the ones born in the XVIII and XIX centuries. It,s the default baseline of every free human being. Capitalism, as I see it, has been around for thousands of years, since human beings started to have overproduction of goods. Some believe capitalism began with the invention of money or banks, also thousands of years ago, but you really don't need money to have capitalism. Even a hug can be traded for some kind of good will... I believe the real problem began the moment some people tried to tell other people how to live their lives. Like religion forcing people to believe absurd things, or governments restricting people's freedom to produce and sell their goods. Both diminishing their freedom and enslaving them. Sure, we need rules. But we cannot let those rules enslave us as they already did. In order to have a peaceful and functional society we must freely, willingly, and without any kind of coercion, agree to those rules. But we can´t and we don't. Because there are too many rules, they are not open to discussion (unless there's some violent conflict or a huge parliament or public consensus - which is pretty much impossible), we don't have the time or knowledge to understand them all, and... because those rules are ideological. Meaning, they are not based on reality and, they are always made to favor those who made them or lobbied for it, paying huge sums in the proccess. That is not capitalism, and that is not democracy. It's just another scam. You cannot tell someone "your property, and the results of your efforts, belongs to everybody" unless you wish to be a slave master. But... you are always free to work more, or become better doing whatever you do. Or... do nothing and starve to death. That is not ideological, but reality. Even though many people love the idea of being some kind of slave, there will always be some willing to fight back. Those are the true capitalists exercising their right to be free. All the others are about to give away all their money in exchange for crypto-dollars and crypto-euros, and with it, whatever's left of their remaining freedom. Portugal was under a dictatorship for over 40 years. People were afraid to openly speak their minds even to their relatives. Some are still afraid to do it, even because censorship is slowly becoming "a thing" once more. Not just in Portugal but all over the world. This is where I stand my ground. The time will come when we can not have this kind of conversation online (as we've seen in the last couple of years) or offline (as we're already seing in the UK and elsewhere). Cowardice brought us here, and it will absolutely drown us every single time. I might be wrong, but I will never be silent. Neither should you. 😉
