Hmm. I have to wonder whether Americans also have difficulty hearing certain sounds as well as pronouncing them. For example, in this video you listen to the speaker saying "East Lothian", and to me the i is very strongly pronounced - East Loathe Ian. A very strong ee sound in the middle (which is the i sound). But then you immediately state that you heard "East loth an" as though you didn't hear the i at all, and say that maybe it was there just a little bit. I literally cannot imagine a more pronounced ee sound, so are you hearing what I'm hearing?

I agree! As a Scottish accented person, I heard the words very differently too. Scottish vowels in particular are different - a lot of people can't hear the difference between words like tick and tech in my accent when to me they sound really different and no Scottish person would be confused about which I'd said.

There are a large number of islands, large and small, off the Scottish coast. The three main island groups are the Inner and Outer Hebrides, the Orkneys and the Shetlands. The Hebrides off the west coast of Scotland is probably the most varied and includes well known places like Skye and Mull. It has beautiful white sand beaches, the third largest whirlpool in the world and hurricane force winds during the winter. The Orkneys off the north coast of Scotland has virtually no trees and a lot of pre-historic sites you can visit. The Shetlands is even further north and is half way to Norway. There is a lot of viking influence here and it also has few trees.

Thought I would share a post I received as think It will make everyone feel happy What it's like to be British 🇬🇧 😂 • Worrying you’ve accidentally packed 3 kilos of cocaine and a dead goat as you stroll through “Nothing to declare” • Being unable to stand and leave without first saying “right” • Not hearing someone for the third time, so just laughing and hoping for the best • Saying “anywhere here’s fine” when the taxi’s directly outside your front door • Being sure to start touching your bag 15 minutes before your station, so the person in the aisle seat is fully prepared for your exit • Repeatedly pressing the door button on the train before it’s illuminated, to assure your fellow commuters you have the situation in hand • The horror of someone you only half know saying: “Oh I’m getting that train too” • “Sorry, is anyone sitting here?” - Translation: Unless this is a person who looks remarkably like a bag, I suggest you move it • Loudly tapping your fingers at the cashpoint, to assure the queue that you’ve asked for money and the wait is out of your hands • Looking away so violently as someone nearby enters their PIN that you accidentally dislocate your neck • Waiting for permission to leave after paying for something with the exact change • Saying hello to a friend in the supermarket, then creeping around like a burglar to avoid seeing them again • Overtaking someone on foot and having to keep up the uncomfortably fast pace until safely over the horizon • Deeming it necessary to do a little jog over zebra crossings, while throwing in an apologetic mini wave • Punishing people who don’t say thank you by saying “you’re welcome” as quietly as possible • The overwhelming sorrow of finding a cup of tea you forgot about • Turning down a cup of tea for no reason and instantly knowing you’ve made a terrible, terrible mistake • Suddenly remembering your tea and necking it like a massive, lukewarm shot • Realising you’ve got about fifty grand’s worth of plastic bags under your kitchen sink • Indicating that you want the last roast potato by trying to force everyone else to take it • “I’m off to bed” - Translation: “I’m off to stare at my phone in another part of the house” • Running out of ways to say thanks when a succession of doors are held for you, having already deployed ‘cheers’, ‘ta’ and ‘nice one’ • Changing from ‘kind regards’ to just ‘regards’, to indicate that you’re rapidly reaching the end of your tether • Staring at your phone in silent horror until the unknown number stops ringing • Hearing a recording of your own voice and deciding it’s perhaps best never to speak again

Afraid Airedale Terriers don't come from Ayrshire. They originated around the River Aire, in Yorkshire :)
@downsman1

FYI, Airedale Terriers come from an area of Yorkshire. Many areas of Yorkshire have names ending with -dale (meaning valley), Wensleydale is famous for cheese etc. Scottish pronunciation of English is very different to ours because up until recent times (300 years?) they spoke Gaelic, as some still do up in the Highlands and Islands. Keep up the fun videos...................................................the ancient Englishman.

Those aren’t counties. They’re local authorities ran by different councils. For example the city of glasgow as it’s own council but comes under the county of lanarkshire along with north Lanarkshire and south Lanarkshire.

Fun video! These are the Scottish "Counties" since local government reorganisations from the 1970's to date. The "traditional" Scottish Counties, which had been around for centuries would have had you a bit more baffled, I think! Kirkcudbrightshire for example, or Zetland! (At that time, the East- or North- etc would also not usually have been present). Also, some over time changed their names - such as Forfarshire which became Angus, or Haddingtonshire which became East Lothian. (Lothian was unusual in this respect - there were 3 Lothians - East- West- and Mid-Lothian - all of which had older names: Haddingtonshire, Linlithgowshire and Edinburghshire!!!). I would also say that your Scots speaker had a very unusual (for Scotland) accent, when pronouncing Moray. (Which used to be Elginshire). Most people I know up there would pronounce it Murry!! Some others which are now gone included Berwickshire, Kincardineshire, Roxburghshire, Selkirkshire and Wigtownshire. Try saying those!
@ddemaine

Aye, these are the council areas created by the Local Govt Act 1994 (enacted two years later), which are mish-mash of the traditional counties and 1974-1996 regions. That legislation didn't name them "counties"; so they are counties de facto, encyclopaedia and gazetteers consider them as the geographical subdivisions of Scotland The pre-1974 counties still exist for lieutenancy and land registration

Hehe. This was great fun seeing the attempts. As a Scottish las growing up in Paisley I get a daily dose of many different accents. On top of that, my accent tends to confuse people that I’m not from Scotland at all! (I am so it’s something that really annoys me) my accent is Scottish (possibility with a hint of North Irish and Northern English) but I have something that’s apparently more common for Australians (as I’m told by my parents) where I often end a sentence in a higher tone of voice, instead of a lower one like most people. I most commonly hear the more diluted version of our accent where, we do still pronounce things the same way, it’s just not as strong though I do still hear a fair amount of the more Glaswegian (Glasgow) accent around the place.

Many Scots I know - having lived there for a few years in recent past - do say the SHIRE in full, while English people don't. Yet you will notice he didn't say it out in full on Ayrshire but did on Aberdeenshire, Clackmannanshire, etc. This is quite common. Not to say SHIRE in full where there are only two syllables. Moray - he said it correctly based on where he lives in Scotland, but most people from the Moray area and elsewhere in the Highlands say it as per the surname Murray.

It is beautiful and it also has small Buddhist island about one mile offshore known as the Holy Isle but don't get it mixed up with other holy islands. If checking it out on Google type isle of Arran and the Holy Isle in the search engine. ps Don't get confused between the Isle of Arran in Scotland and the Aran islands in Ireland

I actually didn't keep count, so I won't say I got it 100% correct, but I'm pretty confident I was ~95% correct. On my dad's side, his great grandmother was from East Lothian with other relatives in the other parts of "The Lothian's". So basically the greater Edinburgh area.

The Airedale terrier does not originate from Ayrshire but from the aire valley in Yorkshire. Due to the Pennines running down the centre of the country all of Yorkshire have many rivers. The valleys in which these run are named after the river that runs through them e.g. The river Aire runs through Airedale, the river Wharfe runs through Wharfedale. However there is one exception to this. Due to the unappealing name of the river Ure this valley is known as Wensleydale! This is where the cheese we'll known from Wallace and grim it is from. Within the town of Hawes is Wensleydale there is a large cheese factory and museum that not only shows you how their famous cheese is made but also has a lot of Wallace and Gromit memorabilia. It is thanks to Wallace and Gromit that the Wensleydale cheese is still made as before it came to fame the cheese making in the area was nearly wiped out due to the commercialisation of cheese production.

There is no oddity about American English having some of the same emphases as Scot's English. The number of American surnames over 200 years old is a significant part of the total. Early immigrants came from Scotland, but from the Scots who were forcibly moved to northern Ireland, designated Scotch-Irish in the US and Scots-Irish in the UK(Scots themselves do not like to be called Scotch and you may offend by calling them Scotch, but the American usage is more than 200 years old and apparently did not offend over here in that time, for whatever reasons).

The Orkneys are fantastic. Also, aruably the epicentre of neolithic culture in the British Isles. A must visit on your 'round Scotland trip. Perhaps not as visually stunning as the Western Isles, but they have an atmosphere all of their own. Not to miss are Maeshowe Chambered Cairn; Skara Brae (5,000 year old village); Ring of Brodgar and the Standing Stones of Stenness. But plenty of other sites. And the light up there is different, it feels softer somehow. Oh, and this time of year the daylight lasts so long, much longer than in England. Magical place. And the Orcadian accent is as much Scandinavian as it is Scottish.

Haha, North Lanarkshire is an industrial waste land ....I'm sure it had major heavy industries in the 1970's which were forced to closed. I'd Recommend the North Coast 500, you'd need to drive and I'd advise of doing it in summer time as you might get a day of sunshine. Islands - Orkney is a must. But dont stop there you can hop on a ferry for day trips to several I'm sure. I'm from the west coast and the "Shire" is more "shur" which is probably just us west coasters being lazy. Good Luck putting them on a map I was embarrassingly bad at it and I live here.
