I’m a Midwesterner who lives in Edinburgh. I moved here in 1999, and I still am in awe of the beauty of this city. It was really lovely seeing Edinburgh through your eyes. Hope you will be back.

Don't forget that all those tall cathedrals were built by hand. Each brick shaped and put in place by hand. No power tools - just ladders, ropes and sweat!

Originally, they could be _closed_ off at night to prevent undesirables disturbing the rightful occupants. 11:10 The City Observatory is still used by the Astronomical Society of Edinburgh, an amateur group. The Royal Observatory, Edinburgh is sited on Blackford Hill and is still active scientifically - housing both the University Department of Astronomy and the UK's national Astronomy Technology Centre.

Ethan was wondering what the square holes in the wall were used for, (were the homeless tent was). These were for supporting cross beams that would have supported a floor, which suggests the builing was quite substantial in its day.

If you ever have the time to explore the highlands and islands of Scotland it'll blow your mind. When my kids were little we spent many summers in the outer Hebrides especially on the isle of Lewis and Harris. Some of the beaches like Luskentyre are stunning and you can practically have them to yourselves. Scotland is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe.

Great video, You appear to be settling in to UK life in this video. I would say this was your most entertaining video so far. We are so used to beaches in this country that it takes Americans to remind us of the sheer joy of going to the seaside.

I really like the way you present your videos, given the commentary as you go from place to place. Scotland is a beautiful country with so much history & lore. Now you have a general feel for the place, you’ll be able to select certain areas & perhaps spend a little more time there. What a great video - Edinburgh is such a beautiful city and easy to get around, my favourite. You filmed some quaint and interesting buildings too, like the little courtyard. Well done for wading in to what must have been a very chilly sea, but you had great fun - loved the sight of Angela running along the beach "Chariots of Fire" style. Additional info - you may have noticed a huge arrangement of seating in front of the castle. This is for the August Edinburgh Military Tattoo - marching military bands, pipers, dancers, fireworks and laser display, and in this film I see Swiss flags and a Stars and Stripes, so performers from USA were there. This is just to watch in your own time - check out RU-vid "Castle of Light (Extended)" by Jim Ramsay.

I love to see your Edinburgh footage. Not so much has changed since 1976 when I visited the town the first time. I went there agajn in 1982 and 1992 both times staying at a camping site. Back in 1982 I visited Edinburgh during its annual festival and on the camp site we were woken up by a piper - every morning. I remember English classes in Germany back in 1977 (where I was enrolled at that time) having a huge argument with our English teacher not being able to pronounce Edinburgh the correct way. What fun that was.

20+ years ago I travelled as a young adult with my parents 2 weeks through Scottland and it was a memorable trip. A beautiful country to say the least. We started our vacation from Edinburgh and returned there before leaving to London. Still miss those green hills.

I can sympathise with the exhaustion aspect ; I visited your West Coast '94 doing 1994 miles, by coach, and it was exhilarating but also tiring, followed by a flight to Hawai for a much needed rest. I’m glad Edinburgh was everything you hoped it to be. I look forward to your video on the castle. Most of the buildings are built with local Sandstone but are dark because of the pollution caused by the coal powered Industrial Revolution. Most British cities have similar pollution stained buildings but the transformation if they are cleaned can be remarkable! As a Yorkshireman I’m really looking forward to your York video!👍🏼

Glad you enjoyed your trip up Edinburgh. I love Edinburgh. Wife and I have been up on four three-day city breaks and we never get bored, there is always something new to see and do. We were last there three years ago where we did the Castle tour, which took up a whole afternoon. We always plan to do the the creepy ghost tours of the crypts beneath Edinburgh, so far we haven't been brave enough.

The "Creepy" wall is a retaining wall. It stops the earth hillside from sliding down. Lothian is pronounced "Low-thee-an".

You packed quite a lot in to a short time in terms of sight-seeing but it looks like you didn't get to see the "New Town", which is the Georgian district on the other side of Princes Street from the castle. It's full of beautiful terraces, squares and crescents, and a bit more relaxing to walk around than the Old Town in respect of crowds etc.

You were so fortunate to get great weather. Scotland in the sunshine is simply stunning.

Great wee video guys. You lucked in with the weather for sure. When I was a kid, you could climb up the stairs in Scott Monument right to the viewing gallery at the top but they closed it in the 90’s for safety reasons lol

I lived in Edinburgh for many many years and one of my go to dog walking spots was Portobello beach. True not the greatest looking beach but I love it. However there are beaches in the North of Scotland that are truly world class (with cold water ). Glad you guys enjoyed my adopted City.

Watching you guys enjoy our country is wonderful. BTW though out of sequence glad you got your phone back Angela and dont blame you for runnninh around on the beach. Sand and sea brings out the kid in all of us. I love EDI and have bought two kilts there. Would have loved to have seen Ethan try a kilt on. Cant wait for the next installments

At the bottom of Calton hill path and across the road is Calton Old Cemetary which has the only memorial to the American Civil war outside of the US in recognition of the many men of Scots descent who fought on both sides of that conflict. Living near Edinburgh is fantastic. It has the worlds biggest art and culture festival in August every year. If you thought it was busy when you were there...... LOl Glad you enjoyed it guys. You passed many places with interesting stories to them but unfortunately visitors don't really have time or know what to look for. I hope you get the chance to come back again for a bit longer. While Edinburgh is undoubtedly amazing, it's NOTHING compared to what else Scotand has to offer. It's fair braw! {Really beautiful}

I lived in Edinburgh for a while and have to say it's probably the only large city I'd ever consider living in long term (I tend to prefer smaller places). Plenty to see and do but not as crowded as many others. . . well apart from during the festival lol I've lived much Longer in Stirling (Stirling Castle often acts as the stunt double for Edinburgh castle in films lol), about half my life. Scotland is my homeland and I've never considered living anywhere else although I have wandered around a lot of europe for holidays. While yes the public transport in Edinburgh is some of the best in the UK I wonder what you made of the layered nature of the streets. I gave many tourists directions when I lived there as the maps can be hard to read due to streets appearing to cross over each other but actually being on different elevations. Again you were time limited but you could easily have spent a couple of weeks exploring all there is to see in my nations capital. I note you have a Glasgow trip as well so you will be able to contrast the two major cities in Scotland. All the other scottish cities are much smaller but each one is very distinct.

Edinburgh is my favourite city. Its 30 minutes on the train for me. We have amazing culture, architecture and museums there. We have so much coastline you weren't far from the cleanest best beaches in the UK. Glad you enjoyed your trip. Hope you can come back when your children are older and they can enjoy it also

Lothian (low-thee-ann) is the historic area around Edinburgh. The council areas (counties) immediately surrounding the city of Edinburgh being East Lothian, Midlothian & West Lothian.

I loved the way you just get on a bus going....somewhere...great way to see a new city...takes you to places you wouldn't see on a tour bus. London busses re making for that...way better than tour busses. Really enjoying your videos.

It's years since I visited Edinburgh but I used to be a frequent visitor (one of my brothers lived there with his Scottish wife). It's a beautiful city and surrounding area - well worth a visit.

Awwww I LOVED living in Edinburgh. It looked like you pootled into the Grassmarket, and down the Royal Mile from the Castle to Holyrood palace. It’s such a wonderful city isn’t it, filled with history and splendour. It was awesome seeing you guys in the sea at Portobello beach. The Scottish sea is super cold but I used to go there all the time. You weren’t lame at ALL! Hilarious. Going for a paddle is a terribly British thing to do, because oft times our seas are colder than in your neck of the woods. :)

I live in Glasgow so I've been anticipating your Glasgow video since I found out you came here, looking forward to it

The good thing about Edinburgh is that you will have different experiences depending on when you come here. You arrived pre festival season which just before the August Festival season which is one of the peak times, as the city I think actually doubles in terms of population during the festival. There are literally thousands of all types of shows but comedy is probably the most well known type of event. You can however do the festival on the cheap as long as you arent too fussy about what you go to see as there are free and very cheap tickets available. Mainly because many venues have a different show on every hour so some venues will easily host 12 different shows in one day. This festival is where you can see bigger names but also the ones who will make it big, many cut their teeth at the Edinburgh Fringe, with alot of them actually getting into debt to perform in Edinburgh as its seen as launching pad for their career. In terms of places to stay, its very expensive during the festival as artists and tourists compete for rooms. An option is to stay maybe 15 to 20 miles outside the city (maybe West Lothian) in one of the surrounding towns and to get the train to the city centre, which is only around 20 to 25 mins away. The other peak experience time for Edinburgh is New Years which is known locally as Hogmanay. I actually prefer Edinburgh in the winter, there are many cosy bars and there is a great atmosphere at the Christmas and New Year period. It certainly looks more dramatic in the snow! Its the same however at this time of year if you are looking for places to stay, its very busy. Also if you want access to the main street party which hosts live music and fireworks to welcome in the new year, this is a ticketed event but its not expensive, you just need to plan in advance. Even if you dont make the street party just about every bar and nightclub will have a late licence and public transport is extended to allow people to get home safely from the city centre. The festivals in August and New Years in Edinburgh are world famous for a reason, they draw in a global crowd and is on many peoples bucket lists. Hope to see you back here soon!

Speaking as an Englishman, I can say that Edinburgh has class, architecturally and historically. The reason that the Scott Memorial and other buildings are so dark is that they are all soot-stained from before the clean air act. Edinburgh is known as "Auld Reeky" due to the smell of soot and smoke and the smog that used to envelope the city back then.

Its good to see that you learnt to say 'Edinburgh' properly
