I’m American as well and started following AFL when it would pop up on cable sports here from the late 80’s on. I’m a huge Collingwood supporter. They’re the most popular and hated club in Australia lol. What I can tell you is the game is fast, furious and exciting. If it ran same time as NFL for a whole season, I’d never watch NFL, that’s how much I love this game. It really is the best sport there is. These players are the greatest athletes on earth.

The record attendance is 121,696 people for the 1970 Grand Final, there's more seating and less standing room now so capacity has fallen to around 100,000. Collingwood pulls the biggest crowds and has been involved in the top 5 highest attendances of all time and regularly brings a million people through the turnstiles each year, their average attendance per game is a little over 80,000

It's an amazing game, played or followed from the age , and 10 yo me got to 1970 grand final, official crowd was 122,000 and they used to open the gates after halfway, so l got to watch approximately another 15,000 climb onto the roof of the stadium from late entries. It was deemed to dangerous so they started to limit attendance til they got it down to 100,000 seats. The crowd get so loud you can feel the ground vibrate.

In regards to bouncing the ball, which isn't explained quite as well as it could be in the vid, the rule is a player cannot run further than 15 metres (about 16 yards) without having touched the ball to the ground. The most effective way to do that is obviously to bounce it. The umpire judges it by eye. If the player runs too far the crowd also starts to react. In reality, players usually bounce the ball every few strides, just to make sure, so giving away a free kick is rare. A good vid to watch of the game play is the highlights of the 2017 grand final. It was a bit of a blow out, but the crowd goes off. It's a good video to get a sense of the atmosphere. The 2019 grand final was a great game, too, as the end was a genuine nail biter.

@macar9366

16 yards roughly guestimates to 15 steps and the umpires/ref's rule on there judgement that's why you usually see a player bounce straight away so they time themselves also if your struggling to bounce the ball its acceptable to bend down and touch the ball on the ground my team is the West Coast Eagles.

You see the different colour in the grass when its zoomed out. Sometimes it just lines but most times its squares? These are 5 meter sections. @@AverageSportsFan also I noticed some confusion with goals. Just to help out. For a goal to be given, the ball must leave the foot of the player and not be touched at all before going thru the posts. A player can kick the ball thru the middle posts, but it be only a point, if any player (your team mate or opponent) touches the ball with any part of their body before the ball FULLY crosses the line. That is why you see players dive, or jump to touch the ball before it crosses the line

@@AverageSportsFan another fun fact, and something that was in your 1st afl reaction video, games can be won or lost after the final siren has sounded and the game has finished. If a mark has been taken within the range of goal, (so about 10 meters passed the 50 m mark) and the final siren sounds moments after the mark is taken, the player is still allowed to take their set shot on goal. Yes, the 16 yards (or 15 metres to be precise) is an approximation. It's roughly 10-12 running strides for the average player, and you can usually get away with a metre or two either way. The umpires usually won't penalize a player unless it's blatantly obvious he's run too far, because like you said, there's no way to accurately measure it on the field. And yes, it is rough on the body. Injuries are common, and some very serious, sometimes ending a player's season. You tend to breathe a sigh of relief when your team gets through a game with all players unscathed.

Awesome game. Am involved here in Australia. Seen a few reactions to this video, and one thing I'd like to ad. When they explain about the score "Collingwood 20 10 130, the 20 are goals, 6 x 20= 120, the 10 are 10 points, which are added to the goals, so 20. 10. 130 equals 20x6=120+10+130. Sounds like a 7 year uni degree, but you do get use to it. Love your work brother

Oh I forgot to say, on Grand Final day there are over, 100,000 people in the stadium and from what I gather not many stadiums around the world can hold over that amount. I was saying I'm from Perth Western Australia and we have 2 teams in the AFL - West Coast Eagles & Fremantle Dockers. We have a brand new stadium here and world class and holds over 60,000 people with the most led lighting in a stadium in the world. Would love for you to visit Perth & Melbourne to get the perspective on the game & experience. Cheers !!

Other than the granny (grand final) another game you must attend is our Anzac Day clash at the mcg. 25 April is our Anzac Day, pretty much most important day to Aussies, where we honour our service people. Collingwood and Essendon play as a key game and it’s spine tingling. Similar to a Memorial Day game. Even all the other clubs and fans watch this and respect this game. 100,000 people and you can hear a pin drop during last post. Either game (granny or Anzac Day) if you’re lucky to attend you wear your own club guernsey with pride for the love of the game. I’ve attended a few proudly but only one where my team competed in the grand and lost!

Australian Rules Football THE BASICS…. It is not Rugby League or Rugby Union ! Played in all states in Australia, but it started in the southern states. Rugby League is still the dominant code in NSW and Queensland, though each state now has two AFL teams No helmets or padding , some players who have been concussed wear a soft head cover. Due to the bumps players often have shoulders and elbows strapped. Concussion injuries are becoming more of an issue as in other contact sports SCORING The goals look like this i I I i Kicked through the middle posts on the full by a team member is a Goal worth 6 points if touched or handled in any way it counts as 1 called a behind . If kicked by opposition worth only 1 so no own goals as in Soccer. Through the side posts is 1 behind also that same for hitting one of the middle posts. Hitting side posts is worth nothing and treated like going over the boundary so is thrown in by umpires. So, the scoreboard can look like this G B P 6 8 44…………. ( 6*6 +8*1) 7 12 54………….(7*6 + 12*1) When a goal is scored play restarts with bounce in the centre, when a behind is scored player from the opposition kicks in. If the bounce is not straight , it is then thrown up, by the umpire. From 2023 ,4 main Field umpires (referees) 2 Goal and 4 Boundary (or like linesmen). Boundary Umpires throw ball back into play when it crosses the line if not on the full . Goal umpire signal when a goal is scored by holding two fingers up and then waving two flags ( or one for a behind) so that the other goal umpire at the other end can make sure the score tallies. This is done because playing field is so large and is a carried on as a tradition. 22 PLAYERS ON EACH SIDE plus a Sub 18 ON FIELD , ( nominally 6 backs, 6 forwards and 6 Midfielders ) and 4 Interchange players who can come on the ground and go off at any time as long as there are only 18 on field. Players can play in any position and be moved at any time in the game. From 2023 There is now an additional substitute who can replace a player at any time At start of a quarter and after a goal when they must be in the 6 backs, 6 forwards , 6 Midfielders setup. Also, two players ( a Back and a Forward) must stand in each goal square (which is marked on the ground in front of the goals) at each of these restarts. Teams get one warning if they do not set up properly after which they are penalised. Played over 4*20-minute quarters plus injury time (clock stops when umpires blow whistles). An average game runs for about 100-120 mins. 5 min on field break between 1st and 3rd quarters and 15 mins off field break at half time Interchange players can come on and off at any time through a designated area usually on the boundary area opposite centre of the field. If a player catches the ball from a kick that travels more than 15 metres (referred to as a mark) he controls it, but must start play again within 15 seconds or shoot for goal within 30 seconds . An Opposition player stands on the position of the mark and he now cannot move until the ball is kicked. Umpires will call out “Stand” until there is “Play on”. A departure from the mark after standing it, or the protected zone after entering it, will result in a 50-metre penalty being paid by the umpire to the player with the ball. This is seen as a way of tackling time-wasting. Players can run with ball, but must bounce it or touch to ground every 15 metres Players cannot impede or run too close ( within 10 metres) to an opposition player who receives a free kick, or marks the ball . If they do so, the penalty is a 50-metre advance in position, doubled if there is more impedance. Kicking out on full over the boundary is a free kick to the opposition and now deliberately kicking it out will result on the opposition getting the ball. I believe it, sooner rather than later, will become more like Football/Soccer where the last touch will give it to the opposition Ball cannot be thrown. It is held in the palm of one hand and punched with the other .( This is called a Handball) Players can be tackled below shoulders and above waist , but cannot be tripped or pushed in the back, punched in the stomach or elbowed . Players can be legitimately bumped using a hip and shoulder) when ball is within 5 metres. Head high tackles are really frowned upon and as I said before Bumps are legal, but not above head or in back or below bum. Tripping is not allowed either is taking out a player’s legs below the knee with a slide tackle and any abuse or touching/ pushing of the umpires is severely dealt with. There are no sin bins or any sending off rules. No Red or Yellow cards. So Final match of the year (The Grand Final) can be interesting with players being reported/cited and having to front a tribunal in the next week. One year a player was suspended for nearly the whole of the next season for a variety of fights. Many older players have often RETIRED from the game after a grand final and making sure they have “settled” some scores with opposition teams. Off the field it might be called “assault” Field is roughly 190 metres by 140 metres , there are 50 metre arcs drawn at each end on the ground to help players judge distance from goal. There is a 50 metre, centre square in which at the restarts of quarters or after goals that only a limited number of players ( 4 from each side) can be in Midfield (ball) players usually cover between 12-18 kms a game Average height of Midfield players is about 6’2 / 186 cm, Forwards/ Backs are usually bigger, there are some who are up to 6’4’- 6’8’’ /188-196 cms , the biggest players being the Tap “Ruckmen”6’8’’- 7’ /196-200+ cms , weights vary between 190 lbs. -240 lbs. (85-110+kgs). Last year the shortest player was 5’6’’/ 165cms. MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) seats about 110000 people many major games are played here. “Marvel” stadium in Melb seats 50000 has a roof and many Friday night games are played under cover so are not rain affected as some games at other grounds can be. The finals after the home and away season are made up of the top eight teams playing off (with the top 4 having a second chance) and teams gradually being eliminated until there are only two left who meet in the Grand Final. The Grand Final is played at the MCG every year on last Sat in September starting at 1430 Australian Eastern Standard Time

The shorter guys play in the centre. They run an average of 20 Kilometre’s a game. My team is Collingwood and we had your American player. Collingwood are the Magpies or just pies. We called him American pie. You always knew when he was near the ball when over 90,000 people started chanting USA. He is loved and he had to play lower levels for 4 years until he made first grade. When they got into a Grand Final his parents flew here to watch. We had football 10 years before you did. It was to keep Cricket players fit in the off season. It is one of the oldest codes of football anywhere and one of the best. If you love a really fast game. I watch your football and my team is the Green Bay Packers. My Dad got me to watch everything. Any game with port Adelaide vs Richmond games are always great battles, even though Richmond has been the most successful team since 2017 up till 2021 , having won the trophy in 2017 , 2019 and 2020 , they are the team that has dominated AFL in recent years. But every game between port Adelaide and Richmond are always great battles and so intense that you should really have a look at. Especially in 2020 and the game they played just a couple of weeks ago. 👍 If you get a chance, have a watch and let me know what you think.

Your intuition is excellent. it's a great game because play keeps going, stopping for less frequently than similar games. Soccer is similar for the continuance of play, but AFL is more aggressive and back-passing to keep control happens a lot less. Hopefully you've seen a bit more by now, and, yeah, if you can get to a grand final, you'll love it. The roar of the crowd is a physical thing that rips at your chest and makes you scream along with them. The noise goes through your body, and the play is fierce. They are elite athletes, with a bag of skills quite a bit bigger than most other team sports, and the players have a great blend of agility, endurance and toughness that makes it more exciting to watch, to my mind, than any other - and I do watch a lot of other sports around the world. AFL is like the pinnacle of them all for athleticism. And no fake injuries - these guys pride themselves on being tough, and,. for the most part, honourable sportsmen. Shout to the women's league, too, for having the same values. Cheers, mate.

They need to rephrase "bouncing every 16 yards." You can't run more than 16 yards without bouncing the ball. You can bounce it at any distance under the 16 yards. Given the shape of the ball, a bounce can go wrong though. If you do run more than 16 yards, the umpire blows his whistle and you forfeit possession. Most players don't manage more than three bounces before kicking the ball or handballing - an opponent is usually coming at them by then And yes, the 16 yards is a bit of a "guesstimate " on the part of the umpire, but they are good at it. The crowd also lets out a mighty howl if they think an opposition player has exceeded the 16 yards!
