You said you had only been here for a week but if you come back or stay with some Swedes/eat dinner at some Swede´s home you would see the diet is actually quite healthy. The fast-food is more of a out on the town thing of course and in central Stockholm there are a ton mostly because of tourists I'd say :) My experience of course!

Glad you enjoyed your stay! Welcome back anytime! About the speaking Swedish to you guys, I think that a lot of swedes feel it’s rude to assume you don’t speak Swedish and initiate a conversation in English right away. Therefore it’s more “safe” to start off with Swedish and make the switch :)

I think you totally could pass for ethnic Swedes by the way you look also, so that is probably a big part why everyone speaks Swedish, i certainly would not knowing where you are from. And also as you noted, there are alot of people living in Sweden of different heritage, so even if you think they may look foreign they may even have been born here in Sweden.

About the diet thing! Swedes don't eat out nearly as much as Americans or South Europeans do, and when we do eat out it's more of a rare luxery thing then the standard family dinner, most swedish families go out and eat less then once a month, but there are alot of fast food chains here aswell but it depend on the location like in stockholm inner city for sure there are! but as soon as you leave the city it's A LOT less fast food places and not nearly as dense as in most states either, I was overwhelmed by all the choices of resturants everywhere not even in the bigger cities when I'v been visiting Us. I live 25min with car out from central stockholm myself, surrounded by farms and been to the states a couple of times and lived with friends there in multiple states but mostly the north eastern states, like pensylvania and so on. I remember reading somewhere that on Average Americans eat out on resturants 1,5 times a week, compared to swedes eating out 0.8 times a month on average. And it has to do with Culture around resturants and also prices of going out, as the non fast food resturants in sweden are pretty pricey. Also going out to eat in general no matter if fastfood or not has a big heavy stamp of beeing pretty unhealthy so that also helps with keeping people from going out to eat on resturants. What swedes do however is go out and "Fika" like you said alot more, and that isn't neccery more healthy either, and usually include eating sweetes.

i dont know if you swedish or english. but in the city i live in with has 10K ppl we have 6 pizza chains and we have 1 mcdonalds 1 max 5 gasstations with a store innit. My familly eats home made food everyday. So ppl dont really eat out but there is a lot of fast food resturants.
@PannkakaMedSylt
@PannkakaMedSylt 6 лет назад
6 Pizza Chains and 1 mcdonalds aint that much actully for 10k ppl. it kinda sounds like the ammount of fast food options in my "kommun" aswell except no mcdonalds avaible, but instead a Subway resturant, it lives 32 000 people here and maybe 1 more pizza place then you have, and semi close to stockholm 30-40min with car. Last time and the times before I'v visited the states (I'v only visited the north east coast, New York, Pensylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, Delaware since thats where I know folks) I was really suprised by the ammount of fast food chains around, in towns with around 10-20k ppl there was still like 20+ big fastfood chains equal to mcdonalds so to say. I'm talking: Mc.Donalds Arbys KFC Pizza Hut Taco bell Wendys Burger King Subway Dominos Sonic Dairy queen Carl's Jr. Dunkin Donut and the list goes on, and I havn't even mentioned stuff like starbucks and convinient stores, Gasstations with stores and so on that are so many more avaible aswell compared to here. ontop of that they still have a few non chain fastfood places too like pizza places and so on just like we do too. Basically it's 2-3 times as many fastfood places avaible there then here compared to residents in an area, and each of those places are alot bigger aswell with their own big parking lots and holding lots of more customers, and usually lots of more people in them then some of the pretty small pizza places around here where I live atleast that has seating for perhaps 15 people at max, and fairly emty most of the time and have a hard time staying in buissnis even with so little competition. What I feel we might even have slightly more off even in the smaller towns are more genuine resturants that aren't Fastfood, we might even have more of those around here in sweden compared to residents per town, BUT it's not still that many. But I have to say I had great times visiting the states and people were very friendly :) Have a good day btw or great even! :)

As Arne said, Norway has higher salaries on average. Also, the Norwegian Krona is about 10% stronger than the Swedish Krona. I'm Swedish and have traveled to Norway before, and it's a lot more expensive compared to here. Sweden does have about a 10% higher Local Purchasing Power Index than Norway, so things are generally more expensive in relation to what you earn in Norway. All of these factors added together makes it pretty damn expensive for us Swedes. Just the exchange rate and decreased purchasing power in Norway adds up to at least a 20% increase in prices compared to what us Swedes are used to. :)

about the speaking Swedish to everyone, i believe it's because we have people from sooo many places living here so there is no way to tell who lives here or are tourists so yeah i try Swedish first and see what happens if i don't hear English first. when i worked in the grocery store it was sometimes really difficult because if i said hello in Swedish, sometimes i'd get no answer, and when i had to ask things it turned out the person didn't know Swedish but was afraid to say anything at all (i think) because they often could speak English, it would have helped so much if the person would just say hello (in whatever language besides Swedish) to indicate that Swedish isn't a thing they can speak :) thats just my tip to help get over the confusion easily

Food isn't as expensive here as you think. In Sweden we have a very strong Lunch-based restaurant business. A good big lunch costs around 85-90 skr, so around $10. The right way to do food in Sweden, and Stockholm in particular, is to find the Lunch restaurants and eat out then. Eating out at dinner is fairly uncommon practice with Swedes. We mostly eat at home for dinner, and if you cook it yourself the Dinner is mostly going to be cheaper than the Lunch. Nearly everybody does Lunch daily at restaurants when working here. A lunchbox is nearly never even heard of. Alcohol is still expensive though.
@Tanax13

I agree with everything Vinyl said. Also want to add that tipping in Sweden is fairly uncommon, or at least it's a lot less than the tipping when in the US. If I eat for 245 kr, I would maybe round that up to 250 kr unless I'm EXTREMELY satisfied and both the service and food was out of this world :)
@hasse77
@hasse77 6 лет назад
The prices are higher due to higher salary and tax costs than in the states for the restauranteers. If the restaurants has collective agreements with the trade unions, then their employees has some decent basic rights and insurance. The restaurants, companies and people in general pay high taxes. Which is needed to finance the education, healthcare, infrastructure, pensions and such. Some restaurants and their employees in Stockholm where a lot of tourists from America and the UK, might expect tips as they normally receive that from tourists. But generally it's not that common in Sweden, even though it might be changing. As we have owned restaurants within the family and myself have helped out my parents during my youth sometimes, I do appreciate the work that great staffs provide and I normally tip when eating dinner. Normally never during a lunch as Vinyl mentioned, as it's not expected at the majority of places and becomes like a hassle for employees. At lunch the restaurants want to have an high flow of customers entering the restaurants, eating and leaving as effectively as possible. Often it's self service is some way or form, or waiters coming out with the food to your table. But then you probably had to order yourself at the counter and not been greeted by a server at your table to take your orders.

A lot of it is very accurate. I Lived in Sweden for 20 years. I know live in America. For about 3 years. Sweden is very multi cultural for being a Nordic country. Much of that is due to poor immigration policy's and problems. Where I think the Swedish government has unfairly welcomed to many people here that they later abandon to bring in more people. Overall tho, great thing. The middle eastern food culture has been fantastic and I love that they established that in Sweden. I can also say, People in Sweden are generally taller and in better shape than Americans. So that is true and you will definitely see that the more time you spend there. Swedes are heavily involved in American politics, Sometimes to a fault. So you got that right. Swedes learn English in school, beginning at 7 so they are very good at English, considering they are not native speakers. What I am the most proud of though. Is how clean it is in Sweden. Littering is something that just is not socially acceptable the same way it is here in America. Swedes are also very mindful of each others common space. For example. Something that drives me nuts here in the USA is that people don't put their damn shopping carts back after they use them. In Sweden. To get a shopping cart. You have to deposit 50 cents Or a dollar into the shopping cart to access it. And you will only get it back if you return the cart. Genius system. Swedes also appreciate a good LINE. Standing in line in Sweden is amazing. It's straight. No one cuts it. Can not say its the same here. BIGGEST thing I cant believe was not the first thing you said. SWEDES ARE RESERVED. They are often hard to get too. UNLESS they are drunk haha. They are introverts by nature. At least a lot of them Could be different in Stockholm as they are more city people. Try a smaller city next time haha. You will see what I mean. Most Swedes also love Americans. I don't know what it is, We just look up to you. We rarely meet Americans so its really cool! Anyways, great video!

about how expensive it is, i would say it depends. If you eat only at restaurants, yes it might be, but that is almost everywhere you go. However, if you buy stuff for eating from local shops, and do most of the traveling around Stockholm by foot or buy public transportation card (pass) which last about 6 years, regardless who use it, and can be recharged at the spot (Stockholm), then it is prety cheap. I left the country after week and still had plenty of cash, although i visit all attractions, museums, parks etc... just smart planing usually works very effective :)

Sorry but 250 for a meal is at more fancy restaurants. You can find a lot of good meals for 100. The original nordic diet is considered healty on par with the mediterreanan. Oatmeal porridge for breakfast, lot of fish, boiled potatoes instead of fried, apples/plums/rhubarbs/blueberries/raspberries etc. It's veggies we have eaten less in. Of course fast food restaurants and cafes have more unhealthy foods. Try a lunch restaurant and you see. Happy to see you chose some place else then Stockholm too. There's lots of nice places. But honestly if you truly want to explore a country that's all about the nature and that unlike the US actually has freedom to roam: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_to_roam I'd suggest something like renting a camping vagon or camping car (is that the right word?) or some such and travel the country on your own with a bit of time to spare. You can buy food fairly cheaply from grocery stores and cook it in your car or vagon, you can bring a tent to go somewhere a bit further from the road etc. Also, if you're going to Norway make sure you do so a year when the sun is approaching solar maximum so you can get the northern lights. If you rent one from a private citizen whose car would just be sitting there unused otherwise you might actually get a pretty decent price on it so that would cover your need for a roof over your head. The prices might be better in Sweden, but here's a website where you might find some private "camping cars": bobilportal.no/ Sorry, it's just in Norwegian, but with google translate you might be able to get by using it. As for places... Hum, you might like small places with old traditional buildings like Kragerø and numerous other places along the coast. If you're interested in the Hansea trade go to Bergen, the second biggest city in Norway and a Hansea city. Preacher's Pulpit is kind of a must for anyone visiting Norway of course, and honestly most of the coastline in that region is just lovely in summer well worth a visit. If you're not going to go camping taking the train from Oslo to Bergen gives you quite a view. You can look up that route on youtube and see pretty much all of it if you want. Other then that you can always just sail along the coastline with ships like "Hurtigruta" ("*the* express route" in Norwegian, of course by modern standards it's not really "express" anymore since it stops all over the coastline) There's a lot of history you might be interested in. We had some concentration camps during the war, Grini is where most of the Norwegian resistance fighters ended up being held, and Falstad is the concentration camp in Norway where the most prisoners where executed and with the worst conditions. There's a number of fortresses around the country. After all, Denmark and Sweden are the two countries in the world who have faught the most wars with eachother of any pair of countries in the world (even more then England and France), and for about 400 years of history including several of those wars Norway was in a union with Denmark, controlled by the same king, and of course took part in all the same wars... Also, some of the earlier wars between Sweden and Denmark was faught on Norwegian soil too, trying to gain power here... So naturally some defenses where needed given that the Swedes where right across the border and where at times considered a mightier military power then Russia and a great power rivaling the ones on the continent. Skiing has quite a history here so you'll find skiing museums. There's museums etc for things like the process of declearing our independence, for our coastal history, for the viking age (for instance there's a nice viking museum named Borg in Lofoten (another place well worth visiting). I live in Trondheim myself, so this place of course got a place in my heart, but of course I'm a *little* bit biased there... i.pinimg.com/originals/01/a5/e1/01a5e1a28540e49836e898508c9ca779.png This is a picture I just stole from Pinterest with the "Fylki" of Norway back in about 850 after Christ. A Fylki is roughly equivalent to a petty kingdom although some where ruled by the equivalent of a "parliament" (both a legistlative, judiciary and executive branch, although of course only the local chieftains and free men could go there and vote on laws and execute them, and the punishment was usually being decleared lawless meaning that *anyone* could kill you, women, children and slaves had no say in these things). Anyway, as you can imagine there where some cultural differences... And while the number of "fylke" has gone down over the years there's still a lot of regional differences in food, traditional clothing, to some degree personality and social norms, and indeed in the way we speak. Also, a lot has happend since back then too influencing various regions differently. For instance we have two different minorities speaking local variations of the language of Finland, one in the south along the border with Sweden, and one in the North. And there's the Sami people who have their own language in the same language family as the language of Finland but in a slightly different branch, both of them have languages in the Uralic language family, a different language family from the Indo-European language family, the one that pretty much all the rest of Europe speak... Anyway, I hope all of that was of some help?

I visited Germany, a little bit of France, Austria, Italy, and Switzerland, and some eastern European countries like Poland and Czech, but very briefly. I noticed food no matter what is more expensive (still fairly cheap though if you know where to look for a good decent meal in Germany), but food was more expensive, while clothing from suite jackets to informal clothes like shirts and pants were cheaper, sometimes much cheaper than here in the US. It's been a while. I was in Germany last year before the Euro. And $1.00 USD was 2 DM. And the arbitrage difference really does help buy more stuff on certain goods and services. Now its $1.00 USD only gets you € 0.81 Euro. And face it, US standard of living over the past 17 years, and even over 40 years, has declined, and Western Europe's has increased in a noticeable amount. So going to Europe, even Australia, New Zealand, or Japan is going to be more expensive. We're a crumbling empire still desperately trying to cling to idiotic economic policies, going broke policing the world, and retrenching back to robber baron oligarchy with companies larger in market share than before the Sherman Anti-Trust Act was used in the early 1900's to bust other oligopolies and monopolies. Since the 80's the no more trust busting. Happens.

Something I'd like to add to the costly food point: I'm from Sweden and have travelled quite a bit through the south part of it (I live near Borlänge but have relatives in all of southern Sweden) and you can find real gems in terms of price and quality. For example I found a small restaurant in Askersund (located just north of Lake Vättern) which was in the same entry way as a hair saloon (it had space for about 20 guests) and it had great food. When we were waiting for our meal a couple at the table beside ours, the woman was saying "I can't eat any more, I'm stuffed" and the husband was going "You know you have to finish the meal, you know he will be unhappy if you don't finish the meal" and we were more of less thinking "What kind of crazy people is in this town...". 10 minutes later we realised why she was saying what she did. He came in with plates big as "pizza plates" (if that makes sense, we ordered Filé Oskar; Fillet of veal with béarnaise sauce, cooked potatoes and salad) where he had 3 big slices of Fillet each with a big scoop of béarlaise sauce, about a 3rd of the plate was covered with salad with different ingredients and the rest of the plate was covered with cooked potatoes. Suffice to say we could barely see the plate and neither of us left the restaurant hungry. And what did he want for the meal? We payed 75 Swedish Kronas, approximately 8,50 USD, for a meal that we would have happily payed at least 12 to 15 USD for without hazzle considering the amount of food and how good it tasted. Will look forward to see the video of your next visit either way, but as I said, if you eat out, try to look around in the unlikely places for the gems hehe.
@Navitori
@Navitori 6 лет назад
That DIY Couple Sadly that restaurant isn't around anymore. He closed down and went for his pension last year. But the gems are still out there for certain. Another one, that at least was around last year, is called Tuppen, and it's located in Skåne, southern most part of Sweden. More or less a very small, what you in the U.S. truck stop like place 80 sek for, what my father said, was the best potato pancake with pork and ligonberries he's ever had beside his mother's. Another dish you could try, if you visit Öland, would be kroppkakor (dumplings). It's a love or hate dish but if you try it, go for those made on Öland and not the mainland, those from the mainland is very "gluey". It's a family-named restaurant on Öland so should be relatively easy to search for online, their name eludes me at the moment. But its around 90 sek for nearly enough for 2 meals unless you are a big eater. Cheers :)

It's illegal for hospitals to not accept cash. They have to accept physical currency since health care is guaranteed according to law, and if hospitals don't accept physical currency they are impeding someone's rights to health care if that's the only payment option they have. Sadly, this doesn't apply to other services and/or products. The reason for this is that debit cards are also considered cash payment since you have to actually have money in your bank account to be able to make a purchase with one. Credit cards are however _not_ considered cash payment.

A Snapstreak is a completely meaningless game/reward you get for sending pics daily to your snapchat friend. In this case the reward is the awesome pics I look forward to everyday. I send him palm trees and blue sky, he sends me snow and pine trees, but in the summer it is beautiful. I used to think IKEA was making fun of Swedish, but no, thats how the language is. There's a clue, in English, to what the word is inside the Swedish word, with a few consonants thrown in. He went on a vacation, all Swedish people have summer houses, to "Gotland" which is an island. Because this is where they "Got land" lol Now he's in "Gotoborg." They have a big amusement park there, kind of like Magic Mountain built in a forest. I think the Swedish language would make a great word game. I'm reading "The Almost Perfect People." it dovetails into my friend's pics. A very good window into the region. You would be lucky to get a snapstreak friend from Tullinge, Sweden. Life looks pretty good there. The standard of living looks far better than ours. Its hard listening to how "Socialism does not work" after knowing Niklas, and seeing his pics.

To further add to this, since I forgot to mention it previously, is that all Swedish banks have developed a common app called Swish, which allows instant transfers of money between people. Linking your bank account takes only a few minutes. Once that's done, you no longer need cash even when transferring privately between people. It's safe, simple and instant, and also completely free. Not sure if such a system is used anywhere else.

11:09 Well, to put it this way, people here in Norway quite literally drive across the border or take a bus over the border to Sweden to shop because it's so extremely cheap with almost everything compared to Norway... As for costs of things in the Nordic region the rule of thumb is that anything that requires local labour is expensive. So food prepared on the spot is expensive because the resturant needs to employ people to make it, but a grocery store is a lot more reasonable. And things like say telecomunication services are cheap since most of the work involved is done by computers and not people etc. (Also, highly educated labour is cheap here compared to elsewhere so anything that requires highly educated labour tends to be cheaper)
@Luredreier
@Luredreier 6 лет назад

The length of Swedish men and woman are a myth. We are around the same length But i do think the food is more expensive here then in USA. But it depends what you eat. USA is junk food heaven cheap and good. But i think wholesome meals are cheaper here. But Sweden is expensive to other countries in food, most needs to be imported. In Argentina i got fine dinning with a nice steak and extras for 10 dollars plus tip. But what you get in Sweden is a simpler vacation, you can ask anyone for help, no problem with shopping ans so on. Also as you said plenty of culture.

Raw fish has also been traditionally common among Scandinavians. Southern Europeans are generally shorter than northen Europeans. But my point is that like most matters it is both genes and enviroment, it is rooted in natural selection and migrations. The same Eurasian semi-nomadic stepp people that spread Indo-European languages from the Eurasian stepp between 6000 to 4,500 years ago into Europe, contributed to northen European height. While southern Europeans with a long history of argiculture selected for shorter height. www.scmp.com/news/world/article/1858274/tall-story-why-northern-europeans-tower-over-their-southern-counterparts qz.com/561034/how-europeans-became-tall-and-fair-skinned-8500-years-ago/ That article uses this one as source for more details www.nature.com/articles/nature16152

My friends from the rest of Europe always say to me if they are looking for some piece of the US in Europe, its most likely in Sweden! Sweden is expensive compared to the US for sure. When I came to the US and when my parents visited one culture shock was the low prices. My dad and brother wished they could buy classic cars and oil in gallons and bring home. Another culture shock was the first morning waking up, getting lost in this house, find the bathroom and sleepily get on the scale and BOOM twice as heavy as yesterday... until I remembered it measured in pounds not kilograms. Then the first summer came and we had 99 degrees outside, and in Celsius the boiling point is at 100 degrees so for a split second my brain went DONT GO OUT YOU WILL DIE! What i don’t get is why americans think Sweden is expensive, especially our food vs theirs? I’ve been in the US and it’s more or less the same except that their food is far more expensive than ours. Like most western countries our employer actually pay are employees/waiters so we only tip what we think is fair. In the US WE had to tip 10% to even 30% because they basically don’t get money for their work. 3 weeks of just giving tips was almost the equivalence of a 2 months salery in Sweden.

It's largely a myth that the US is so much cheaper than Europe and especially northern Europe. Maybe in very unpopular small cities in the US, you can find some good deals on homes and apartments, but pretty much every desirable city has gotten quite pricey. Same for food. When you factor in tax, often not included in displayed costs in the US, and tips, decent food places are about as much as they are for similar places in Sweden/Stockholm. If you're comparing fast food chain prices from the US to the prices of nicer places in Sweden, that's not a fair comparison. US taxes may be lower in many states but that is easily offset by what people end up paying out of pocket for the private version of the equivalent.

The cool thing about Swedish summers is that they have the rare combination of being both very bright and also very green and quite warm at the same time. Midsummer is pretty amazing for example, I sometimes stay up until morning that evening and the sky is blue almost the entire time, lol. In fact I think the sun starts rising just when it has touched the horizon, and that's in the _middle_ of Sweden. The northern parts even have midnight sun around those days, which is a very weird experience.

No cash is to make things safer for stores and to save money not handling all those bits of paper and metal.

Great to hear your view of Sweden. I have to say that this country is dead 9 months a year. Summer which is June, July, August is the time to visit. Then you really get the right experience of Sweden.
