Thousands of illegal American retirees in #Mexico are at risk of being #deported because of Trump's immigration policies towards Mexico. Alasdair Baverstock reports from San Miguel de Allende. US-Mexico Border Wall 🇺🇸🇲🇽 👉 trt.world/16q2
I was born in Mexico but brought to the usa when i was only child. I will retire and die en mi Mexico, to be burried along side my people, in the same country where Zapata and many others like him. Los gueros k se keden con su trump.
@@Cris-if8kf An illegal? According to the real Illegal aliens from the other side of Earth that made up the “illegal” concept. It’s 100% ironic pathetic and cowardly because these same one’s teach Disney Fairytales and half truths at best as factual USA history. Anyways, CANADA, USA, and MEXICO are ALL NORTH AMERICA.
Many Americans are ignorant about real Mexico, sure there are drug cartels in some remote areas or some regions, but there are also vibrant and prosperous cities. Mexico is a big country. Generalizing about Mexico is like saying all of US is like Detroit or the dangerous parts of Chicago. People think that all of Mexico lives in poverty. Not true, and even the ones that do, they fricken own a house, 100% theirs, no mortgage, utilities are really cheap in Mexico... so think twice next time you think they're in poverty. Sure there are people in poverty, but poverty like some Americans imagine it's probably like 7% at most. People migrate because really they're bored in their small towns, most Mexicans from cities don't migrate. The small 300 people towns are dead because of Nafta, but even there people can survive as the land is generous, but they're lured by the dollar exchange rate and difference in wages for non-educated citizens. The educated ones stay as it is better for them. Sure most Mexicans won't change a car every 3 years, eat at fancy restaurants all the time, or have McMansions, but poor poor they're not.
I used to live in Mexico and I was told by an immigration official that Americans did not need an immigrant visa to reside in Mexico for less than 180 days. The tourist card given to me on the plane was sufficient and valid for at least 90 days, or I could ask the immigration official at the port of entry to extend it to 180 days. Extending the tourist card to 180 days is completely at the discretion of the immigration official at the port of entry or at the immigration office in most major cities. Foreigners are NOT, however, allowed to work at all with only a tourist card. Doing so is officially a serious crime. Once the number of days is completed, the American must leave the country for at least 48 hours before trying to return to Mexico. So in conclusion, living in Mexico with tourist card does not make an American an illegal in Mexico.
ESUSAMEX hhhhmmm similar to americans comming here to Canada .... except you have to go back for 24 hrs vs your 48 hrs ... other than that, its the same 180 days . ..interesting.... :)
@@Leatherkid01 I asked at the pedestrian crossing in Nuevo Laredo what the time limit was, and the official said I could return when the next shift started, and a different official would be on duty. So I hung around in Laredo for the day, crossed back to N.L. in the afternoon, and was in time for the bus going south (which I would have taken the next day). It might officially be 48 hours, but that day it was more like 6 hours.
@@MarcosElMalo2 I know some guys who literally just cross to San Diego and spend the day at the beach and shopping and then come back and get more 180 days that same day 🤷♂️
It's not hard to get a retiree visa. You just have to demonstrate that you're financially independent (savings, pensions, social security) and that you won't need a job.
6 month tourist visa, then apply in Mexico for either temporary or permanent residency. Mexico loves foreigners, they help the economy. I'm retiring there in a year, yayyyy.
From the times that I've visited Mexico, I would have to say that some food prices are cheaper, some are higher. Last I checked though, gasoline was more expensive than I'm paying locally here in Texas ($2.14/gal the other day).
5 лет назад
@@CurmudgeonExtraordinaire If you are in the more heavily tourist areas than sure but if you go to the less traveled places big difference. Gas $2.14/gal? Here in SoCal it is over $1 - $1.50 higher. I guess all those emission requirements
@ -- I think the emission requirements effect more of the cost of cars than the cost of the fuel. The cost of the fuel is affected by the increased property taxes on the fuel stations, income taxes on the fuel stations, and actual additional taxes that Kalifornia puts on fuel. Jorge Vargas I disagree, for The rest of the continent America is not just the United States, for the rest of the continents America is the United States.
Mr Uptown I will restrain my self from being disrespectful, I will explain in a way that even you can understand: For an average citizen in Greece, Italy, Serbia, And yes, NIGERIA, They know the united states as "America", and many people in small villages Don't even know that other countries in the continent like Colombia or panama exist, much less that they are also part of the American continent. 90% of the people in the Americas, even people in small towns know that There is a "United states" but do not know it as "America", and also know relatively where it is. I just cannot believe that you think I am that stupid, but more surprised that, if you are born and raised in the Usa with all the access to education, can't understand such an easily and plainly comment from someone born and raised in a third world country like me, there is nothing wrong with my first comment, you are just too self centered like most people In the Usa to understand it😂😂😂😂

lalotong believe this or not, many Irish in Spain are doing exactly the same as what the American expats are doing in Mexico. One, the costs of living is cheaper in Spain than in Ireland and this is great for many elderly Irish people. Two, for health reasons, old-age pensioners leave Ireland for the warm weathers in Spain when it is winter back home. They return home when the Irish weather improves or when the weather gets too hot in Spain. Elderly Irish people feel acute pains of arthritis during winter and less so in summer.

@@kikeuchiha95 Keep in mind, most Americans "don't want to do these jobs" because the wages are driven lower by the presence of economic migrants. Regarding agriculture in particular, the bracero program used to allow migrants, largely Mexican, to work legally in the field on a temporary basis, but it was found to lower wages and conditions for domestic farmhands and was eventually scrapped, so now we have this uneasy arrangement that's gone on since.
A few things that are missing in this post... The Americans do not demand welfare asset from Mexico..nor do they hold there hand out for a monthly check.... , makes a big difference in attitudes.

Immigrants who benefit the economy, who are not a burden on the legal justice system should be legal everywhere. Immigrants who have special circumstances, should be judged on an individual level, according to their safety and the safety and well being of others already in the host country. As long as these people treat Mexico with respect, abide by the laws etc, they should be allowed to stay.
There are a lot of immigrants that quit the army and some of them train cartel members. There are other army vets with PTSD and a violent behavior. There are also violent racist tourists. Not all of them are OK and when they cross the line they are out. They are not always the good people that come here
Do you know that these Americans are selling Mexican real estate? Do you know what happens after that? They already inflated the house prices in USA, now they are doing it in Mexico.

I don't know what Donald Trump is but I sure wouldn't miss him if he left the USA. He is not only screwing things up for you crossing the border but he is screwing it up for old people, poor people, ethnic groups of all descent in the US. In fact he would attack anybody who votes democratic in the US. So you are not the only one with a problem with Donald Trump. He is a selfish ingreat who is only concerned about his own wealth and his rich republican friend's wealth. As to the fact that you are more Americans that "the Donald" I would say you are the same.
Dustin, if you own stock get ready for the big drop when the North Korean crisis heats up. The stock market has been going up for the last nine years and the bank traders are going to start unloading all of their 2007 or 2008 stock purchases to take profits. I may be wrong but I don't want any stocks right now. When you get old your priorities are different that when you are young. Can't you see that the people in power do not have the middle classe's best interest at heart. They just want to take care of the wealthiest Americans and quite frankly everyone will suffer in the long run. So it doesn't make any difference if I own stock or work. It only makes a difference when all of you don't realize you are getting screwed one turn at a time . Why would anyone want an unstable president like this guy anyway?

@Oddwolf 799 -- Sure, there are areas in Mexico that can be nice, but on the average, the standard of living there is less. The biggest problem that I would have to retiring there is that I would not be able to keep my gun collection since they only allow the criminals / drug cartels to have guns and I don't do / deal in drugs...
@Oddwolf 799 -- Neither Kalifornia nor the leftist warrens of the NorthEast are representative of the rest of the US (i.e. the "fly-over" states). Neither of those two areas would I want to live in. You can't have everything in one place, so you have to make compromises based on the factors that you consider most important to you. For me, freedom (and not having to shovel snow) is important, so I live in Texas. Unfortunately, we made the mistake of going from being our own country to joining the US back in 1846 -- otherwise, we would have probably annexed Mexico and taught them how to do Mexican food *right*... :)
That goes both ways.. only difference is Mexico doesn't make a fuss about it as the United States do.. immigrants in the US contribute more into the economy than Americans do in Mexico. The difference is brown gets singled out .. bigotry at its finest .
I'm retiring to Mexico, USA is too expensive to live in , yet retire in. I love Mexico, always have. The Mexican people are awesome and welcome expats to their country. USA has become a hateful and angry place because of Trump, I,m not alone there are a lot of people retiring to Mexico.
I'm confused why the Americans living in San Miguel are considered illegal? They all have tourist visas and they are all allowed to renew those visas after six months. It's all legal. What am I missing?
you are not supposed to live or have a business or a job with a tourist visa. Some of them also overstay their visas. Most take advantage of the loophole and renew their visas every 6 months. That means they are permanently living as a tourist, which means they get to live there without paying most of the taxes that a resident should be paying.
You're not supposed to live with a tourist visa? OK, I get what you mean. But you are wrong. That's exactly the beginning of the path towards citizenship. You first need to "live" there legally on a tourist visa. There is no other way to begin the process. And renewing the visa isn't a loophole. And what taxes are you talking about? Homeowners pay property tax. Yes, you can be a homeowner on a tourist visa. If the government had a problem with it, you wouldn't be able to. If you rent, your landlord pays those taxes. Sales taxes are paid. What other taxes are the tourists skirting? In the end, these "illegal" tourists are generally very good for the economy, everyone understands that.
Any if they stay out of the U.S. that long, they lose any state residency as most states also require that you actually live in them to claim you are a state resident.
Everyone is welcome to Mexico with open arms they treat American people respect there's nothing wrong with taking a vacation over there neither good food peace and relaxation it's a beautiful country don't believe what you hear about Mexico💣💥
You are dumb! why don't you give them more Mexican land? you already forgot all they stole? you can't compete with them in your own dang country!!, they have dollars to buy your own house.
Mexican politicians are so smart! They have old Americans who retire and cause no trouble move into there country! They buy goods, clothes ,food And Mexico prospers ! Brilliant!

compared to Thailand, Mexico is a dream come true when it comes to retiring. visa laws change like every 6 months in Thailand, getting worse and more expensive each time. Thailand is now a nightmare to live long term if you are a foreign expat. dont waste your time with it, as there are plenty of other better places that will treat you like a human being.
You left out the best part. Several years ago AARP Magazine did a feature article on great places to retire and Mexico was on the list. They interviewed a number of Americans who had retired there and interestingly enough a fair number of them had been CEOs of large American non profits! Apparently the way to go is to run a non profit that is basically leaching off the American taxpayer and then when you retire instead of paying something back to your home country by volunteering, etc. you skip out to Mexico where you can have a live in maid for less than you dropped a week in NYC at Starbucks. But it gets better, most of the wealthy retired non profit CEOs interviewed complained bitterly about the poor roads, libraries, and health care facilities south of The Wall. Are you listening Mexico?
This is a joke. One can come to Mexico and live there. Many thousands own property and come in for six months, leave and return. So long as one is not working for compensation in Mexico, there is not issue with doing this and retuirning every year for a period of time. If one owns real property in Mexico, one pays taxes on it yearly. I have owned a home in Mexico since 1996 and every year I go down and pay the taxes at the local office. In fact, the gringos are probably among the most assiduous when it comes to paying their real estate taxes. Now if one wishes to move to Mexico permanently they can do so and it is actually pretty easy to do so. One can arrange for a Visa de Residente Temporal - Temporary Resident Visa which allows one to stay longer than six months at a time and which is renewed for up to 4 years. Additionally, one can apply for a Visa de Residente Permanente - Permanent Resident Visa. Under either one can obtain a work permit and work legally in Mexico and many people do so.
not only that, 6 month stays gives a retiree time to travel around and visit so many different cities and towns that are not crowded with rushed tourists trying to do it all in a few days or weeks the pace of life is different - over time you can learn different ways of enjoying yourself the words and expressions in Spanish the differences in seasoning, drinking, little bits of history you start to understand the Mexican point of view and can see the US from a different perspective it can take a while to get settled in one place before you get more adventurous I realized I wouldn't want to live in a lot of the hotter parts of Mexico, at first I though I would get used to Baja Norte which is still close to California and it's easy to go back and forth a lot, learn Spanish, get familiar with the country and move around but I prefer Baja Norte - hot enough for me - just exploring both sides of the Baja peninsula would take a while eventually you realize you want to be able to understand as much Spanish as possible - you can get by with a minimum amount of English but there is always going to be some kind of language barrier - especially when I'm getting my car worked on or pay to have some other chores it goes a long way to know Spanish and learn regional differences - I can kind of tell sometimes when someone is from the north now - kind of like Spanish with a US western drawl you might hear in Wyoming or Montana a lot of people in Baja are originally from other parts of Mexico - they will explain how different the customs or food or even politics and religion can be in different Mexican states, just like different states in the US - people in the US lump all Mexicans together but the country is very large and spread out, the diversity in climate is just as diverse as in the US it's also cheaper to book flights for traveling within Mexico, for that matter flying to Central and South America, it's easier to find great bargains - knowing Spanish can be a big help in other countries further away from the US
@@MienemLeben Mexico has always taken in immigrants from other countries including Central and S. American. You can't blame Mexico for migrants choosing to continue their migration north to the US instead.
Just don’t work, and be aware of the diplomatic climate between the U.S. and Mexico at those times you cross back-while it’s rare for relations to get cold, Mexico will negatively react when it thinks the U.S. is overstepping. Have a plan B you can set in place if you’re unable to return at the time you planned. The aduana also has discretion as to who they let in. It’s very rare that they stop anyone, but it’s known to happen. A difficult official can also limit your stay to 90 days rather than give you the full 180.

The difference is these illegal american or US individuals are welcome because they bring money that supports the local economy, they do not hold jobs, nor do they receive any social services support from the Mexican government. They arrived legally and live on renewable tourist visas supplied by the government while following the laws.
These people are in Mexico on tourist visas. Therefore, as long as they respect the visa conditions, it is incorrect to say they are in the country illegally.
It ALWAYS fascinate me as to how "Mexicans" FLEE their Country for America, for a "better life',YET, we Americans find Mexico so thrilling! Is it because we are the "rich" folks going to cavort with the "poor"? Knowing we have money to survive in and can leave at will?! Why else would we want to go to ANY place that people RISK their lives to get AWAY from?
Most places where Americans live are clean and nice, that's a big difference..they don't go throwing litter everywhere is forbbiden like many Mexicans do it,as an adittional comment they have contributed a bunch to the economic growth in this state...I have alaways been treated very good when I travel to the States and I always treat them in the same way...so You are welcome to Mexico.
Illegal US citizens go with money in the bank and pockets. Spend it there. Illegal Mexican citizens come to the US with empty pockets and no money in the bank and get money in the US. Send their children to school free. Get food stamps( Lonestar card in TX). And, yes, I am positive of this because I see it all the time.
Staying for 6 months on a tourist visa isn't illegal. The length of stay can also can be extended while in Mexico. Pretty much the same as here in the US. Let's say 1 out 4 overstayed which is overly optimistic. And if 1 out of 4 retirees are American, that would mean around 1,000 are illegal. 1,000 illegals pouring money into their economy vs easily over a million Mexican illegals fleecing taxpayers in the US. Totally different picture and not even worth bargaining for.

Are they on welfare? WiC, do they saturate the public schools with 5-6 kids apiece who cant speak Spanish? Are they sapping services, funds from the localities or are they bringing money in.
Are they working on the crop fields doing jobs no mexicans want to do? Do they themselves speak spanish? (spolier alert: most of them don't) Are they paying they're fair share of taxes as they should or are they living out of tourists visas? Can they do anything productive, or they are just too old to do anything so they only add to the cost of public medic programs? The problem are not those things, and that cinycal rethoric is retarded.
They are paying for living there and actually employing people. It's not right. I wish they were not there..but 12000 North Americans there compared to 12 million illegal aliens in the U.S....Do the math.
SOME of them are employing some people, it would be wrong to assume that all of them live under the same conditions (just as it is wrong to assume that ALL [or even most] mexican immigrants live on welfare, have 5-6 kids in public schools don't know how to speak english, etc.). Also, there are 12,000 in San Miguel de Allende....but over a million across the country, so...you do the math. ; )
Thats because they have free time, moving to Mexico keeps them occupied they can always do something, learn a new language, culture etc.. And we respect our elderly.
Well, it is not completely true that all foreigners living in Mexico are immune to Mexican immigration laws. I was deported from Mexico after being imprisoned for a week for just having my tourist Visa expired for less than 3 weeks. And once you are deported, you are permanently punished. For example, for 1 year, I was completely expelled from Mexico. Then, for the next 5 years, the computer showed me as being "restricted " meaning that every time I flew into Mexico City, I was punished for up to 6 or 7 hours, being detained in a small room without being able to leave or use the phone, before , without explanation, they approved my entrance. And today, 8 years after being deported for overstaying my visa or tourist card, I am still being punished by not being able to use the new, quick automated machines in the airport, and having to wait in line for one of the now very few agents to approve my entrance. And for those of you thinking "oh, he must have done something else"...No, my friends, it was for just having my tourist card expired for 3 weeks, that's it.
