Chuck one of those sausages inside a slice of white bread, with some grilled onions and ketchup (but you gotta call it tomato sauce), and fold it half like a triangle for the true Bunnings sausage sizzle experience! Re the sausage rolls and meat pies being hot when you first bite into it, it's regulation that no matter how many you've eaten in your life, you'll always underestimate how hot that first bite will be! Definitely works well after a big night out. Pick up a sausage roll and meat pie from the servo, a few squeezy things of tomato sauce on the walk home and it's happy days! Phezz, you don't need too much salt in the pie as once you chuck a shitload of tomato sauce on it (it's the way to do it) you'll get all the salt you need.

To be honest, those pies looked a little dry and lacking gravy. Most pies you get in Australia part of the eating experience is eating them while trying not to drop the insides everywhere as it trys to run out. "Too little salt" - got to remember Aussie food doesn't tend to over salt/sugar their food, its intended that the eater can add a bit of salt to taste as they eat.

You need to be more specific, or they'll use raw onions. Fry your sliced brown onions until they're nice and sweaty and browned on the edges. Take your slice of white bread, fold it in half around a freshly cooked sausage, then put your onions on top of the sausage. Perfect. Oh yeah, don't forget a good squeeze of tomato or barbecue sauce.

Just had a meat pie from my local bakery while watching. Sausages can be done a bunch of ways, in buttered bread, with or without caramelised onion, as a basic meat for a meal served on a plate with mash, veg and gravey, made into curried sausages or alongside bacon, eggs and baked beans for a 'big breakfast' among other ways. We generally buy pork sausages in our house as they are probably the most universally usable, but you can get chicken, beef, lamb, kangaroo, veggie and not to mention all the different flavours ones. One of my favourites is beef, mushroom and worcestershire sauce flavour

I used to work at Mrs Macs in Perth WA, I packed pies and sausage rolls all day long. Hidden secret, Mrs Macs meat pies use real meat, not meat bi-product as some suggest. Sausage Rolls are about 30% minced meat, 50% breadcrumbs to boost the batch size and flavouring including caramel. My favourite was the Beef, Cheese and Bacon pie or the Chicken and Vege pie. They also had a limited release Breakfast pie which was just Bacon, Eggs and a special gravy/sauce, I ate far too many off these.

We do eat sausages for breakfast, lunch and dinner, LOL!! You get them with white bread and it’s called a sausage sizzle, cooked on a barbecue, with tomato sauce (or barbecue), sometimes with onions. Sausage rolls are the best. I craved these sooooo badly when I went overseas. They are amazing!! In Australia, they probably taste better in Australia and in just about every small town, they have “Australia’s best pie” painted on the bakery window, sign or building. They are best straight from the bakery, burn your mouth out, spilling everywhere. They are always great, but some are just knock your socks off great. We make pies with Minced Beef, brown onion gravy, Vegemite (trust me on this), a bit of salt and pepper, short crust pastry on the bottom and puff pastry on the top. Oh, and we call it “Tomato sauce” not “ketchup”

Was it in the oven long enough? It needs to blistering hot to activate the gravy. Pour the tomato sauce over the top crust for the best experience. "Savoury" is definitely the best description. You don't want it too salty or it overpowers the sweetness of the tomato sauce.

The meat in a sausage roll is made of sausage mince, not beef mince. Sausage mince is beef mince that has been mixed and ground until it’s basically mush. That’s why the texture is like that.

Sausage rolls are made with sausage mince - so really finely ground beef, pork, chicken - whatever you choose... with a few added spices - so it's meant to look/feel soft...you cooked it perfectly .... just needed sauce !! The one with puff pastry isn't a sausage roll... there are multiple names for those.... (Pigs in a blanket... etc) BTW Mrs Mac's pies/sausage rolls and pasties are the bomb.... especially the microwave ones when you're pushed for time or just too hungry to wait !!

Two things any self respecting Aussie town has are a pub & a pie shop 😂 We live in a tiny village that doesn’t have any shops so we drive 30 minutes to another small town just to buy their pies & sausage rolls 😜 If any Aussies on here are ever in the Hunter Valley, NSW you need to go to the Icky Sticky patisserie at Lorn near Maitland, their sausage rolls will rock your world!!!

The things you kept calling kolaches are sausage rolls. You got pies, and sausages rolls. You just needed chiko rolls and dim sims to round out the Australian yellow food group. BTW, Crocodile Dundee was written by an Australian, made into a screenplay by 3 Australians, directed by an Australian, produced by an Australian, with an Australian cinematographer and the score composed by an Australian.

Sausage rolls are the best, you can get normal beef, beef with cheese and bacon, lamb or beef and pepper. The meat pies depending where you go you can get normal beef, chunky beef and gravy, with cheese, with Tom sauce actually in it, lamb, chicken and gravy, chicken and veg. We have a store called Jesters which wells all pies, not sure if still going but.

If you drown a traditional Aussie meat pie, upside down, in a bowl of thick green pea soup, add a generous squirt of tomato sauce (ketsup) on the pie, you will have an Adelaidian Pie Floater. Delicious!

An Aussie tradition is the sausage sizzle at Bunnings (our big hardware chain) Roughly US$1.75 ($2.50 AU) buys you a snag (slang for sausage) on a piece of bread with onions and either tomato sauce, mustard or BBQ sauce. The$ stand is set up by Bunnings and staffed by local charities who get the profits. Also of much importance (and coming up on Saturday, we hold elections when folk actually have time to vote) is the Democracy Sausage sold by charities at a stall outside the voting booths along with drinks, scones (kinda like a biscuit but fluffier and served with either butter or jam and cream) and lamingtons on election day. It is almost mandatory to have one after voting and like Bunnings stalls the charities can make serious coin.

It's called a sausage roll. Usually a mixture of beef and pork sausage mince but it does vary. The wrapping is a slightly heavier version of puff pastry. You can put the tomato sauce on the sausage roll too, in which case you would have had to give it a 12. The casing for the sausages is traditionally animal intestine, but I'm not sure you can get that anywhere in the US any more, so most likely a synthetic casing. Those look like thin beef sausages. In Australia the contents have to be a minimum of 50% lean beef (by law). The rest is usually fats, preservatives, spices and fillers. The pies weren't anywhere near hot enough. It needs to be so hot that you can only nibble round the edges at first because the inside is so hot it will blister the roof of your mouth. I doubt there is an Aussie anywhere who has not burnt their mouth at some point. The pastry is a fat (lard) based pastry, that's why when it's too cold the texture is fatty. You can't eat a cold meat pie. Most pies you buy in Australia have a lot more gravy and less meat. It's a quick and economical meal for the masses and we always complain that there is not enough meat in the pie. You can also have it with mushy peas, but that tends to be more common in the southern states, fairly rare as you go north. I like both peas and tomato sauce. Some people like a chunky meat pie, but the minced beef (ground beef in the US) is more usual. You can also get variations on the meat pie - steak and bacon, pepper, bacon and cheese (still has beef), curried beef etc. Additions to the meat pie (peas, bacon, cheese etc) are normally on top of the meat but under the pie shell. In the case of the peas it is added after the pie is cooked. You lop the top off the pie, add the mushy peas, then squash the top back down. The mushy peas have to be reconstituted dried peas for the authentic flavour. The consistency is like a very thick paste. Another variation is the pie floater, usually found in South Australia especially Adelaide. A bowl of very mushy peas with a plain steak pie on top, and tomato sauce on the pie. Not found much outside of South Australia and almost unheard of in the northern states (eg Queensland). Ask for a pie floater in Queensland and people will look at you funny. All of these things are variations on British food from our mostly British heritage, hence the use of lard in the pastry, dried (split) peas, and the lack of seasoning apart from salt and pepper.

All of it looks like proper legit Aussie pies, sausage rolls and sausages. I’m grabbing some for lunch! Sometimes our pies are runnier gravy and the drip and burn our hands. We have many many more flavours to try! Edamame is soy beans. Umami is one of the flavour profiles the others are salt, sweet, sour and bitter. Umami definitely in meat products but also others. It’s the satiating flavour.

Traditionally meat pies have oozing gravy and in days gone by the citizenship tests involved eating piping hot pies while holding them between fingers and if you prevented the gravy running down your arm you were accepted as an Australian citizen.
