In Malaysia, abang is also used for husband. Just like in Korea, the girl calls the guy Oppa (abang)
@nurulafiqah3112
@nurulafiqah3112 3 года назад
Yup but in defense, it actually works if the husband is older than the wife. Because technically we are calling a boy/man older than us 'Abang'. Same like 'Pakcik' which means Uncle to someone much older than us. Most of Malays couple are used to the nickname 'Abang' after married. But sooner will changed to 'Ibu' (Mommy) or 'Ayah' (Daddy) if they had children.

For all the questions you asked, 'is that normal?'. Hmmm.. yeah, i can say all are norms,though not all 100% people do those. Sometimes other family members also named the baby. The parents will filter which is the best and only meaningful names be picked. For the neighbour part, you can relate that with the Petronas raya ad with a bird singing.so yeah, we do share food especially during celebrations. it varies sometimes for the time to get close with our next doors. we can get close under a year or sometimes it took yearsss...or at times, never..(but very small % for never). 😅. And we got close through FOOD!! 😄. For us, neighbours are our extended friends n families. We can help each other when needed.

As for naming our babies, usually we do take suggestion from our elders (wisemen, imams, ustaz),parents, friends but the ultimate right is for us to name the babies.....usually our name is of arabic roots with good meaning behind the names, but there are also modern names and classic names choices.... We want good meaning for the name as in our culture and also in the prophets sunnah it is the name that you call a person is a prayer for them .... Like the name Nuha (meaning intelligence) so when we call the person nuha, it means we r praying for God to grant her intelligence....

We would held occasions when it's raya, Chinese new year to celebrate with our neighbours. They hang out together too like play bowlings, go to eat foods together, play golfs and more 😂 Literally good friends and it's so fun to see them ☺️

It was common when I was young to exchange food during ramadhan for breaking fast. I remember sending trays of food to the neighbours with my cousins & bringing back food from them. Nowadays in general we will buy cookies, cakes, traditional delicacies and chocolates to give our neighbours especially when we return from our travels.

"Abang" IS the word to refer to older brother but in this context it is use as an endearment and respect towards the husband who is the head of the family. This is due to the fact that we are still very much a patriarchal society where the men are head of families (less strict in current times especially among the ethnic I am born into). On Hari Raya, there is usually a tussle where to spend the first day of the celebration. Yes, our neighbours ARE like that. And, no... we don't need years to do that. I bake once in a blue moon and I would just pack some to our neighbours. Our neighbours change often but if I feel like giving, I would regardless of who they are. Of course we take into consideration if our neighbours has diet dos and don'ts (no pork (Muslims) or no beef (Hindus) or vegetarian (Hindus/Buddhists)).

1) Most asian cultures use familial terms to call other people as a form of endearment. 'Abang', 'Ko ko', ' Mat cha'. In a way, you're indirectly telling that person that they're like family to you. Our cultures tend to have the community mindset, and in our community, everyone is family. Thus, neighbours are also family. So it is relatively easy to make friends with them. But of course, not all families are great with each other. So there are neighbors that can't stand each other as well. We're still human in the end. 2) Names are important to us. We have a saying:, 'Nama itu doa', which translate to 'A name is a prayer (or a wish)' You'd give someone/something a name that you wish that person to become in the future. For example, 'Arif' = wise, 'ikhsan' = excellence, 'ikhlas' = sincere, 'Kamal' = virtuous, and so on. Thus, names, in the Malay culture at least, should have meaning behind it. After Islam became the main religion for the Malays, most of the time they use Arabic words for their names. This means that you could take names of the people in this comment section and ask Google to translate it, and you'd get its meaning in English. But there are also people who use older names which usually are just names of things in nature. Examples: 'Helang Putih' = white eagle, 'Matahari' = sun, 'Mawar' = rose, 'Melati' = jasmine. And then there's also some who take names of famous people. My cousin's name is Genghis Khan. His older brother's name is Iskandar Zulkarnain (Alexander the great). My uncle named them after world conquerors. Btw, Etiqa (or the correct spelling is Etika) means Ethics. An apt name for an insurance company, I'd say. And my name means Warrior. Peace ✌️

You could take a look at how Malaysian's households cook. We don't make portions. We always cook more than needed, either to cover dinner as well or we keep the leftover in the fridge. Another option would be giving out food to neighbors. This is more commonly done by the elders compared to younger family, probably depends on financial situation (young couples may still be in the stage of stabilising career and whatnot, so they're more likely to portion their food).

abang can also be used as term of endearment. sometimes it is also used to address locals. for instant, a cashier or waiter, we call it abang or adik if he looks younger. this is more casual than addressing people sir which often used for formal environment. for woman we call it akak and again adik if she is younger. adik generally means a younger person/ younger sister or brother.

This year my turn. Next year yours.... But in this ad it is a bone of contention for the wife when the hubby didn't want to go back to hers as last year they didn't go back to hers due to MCO.....

The grandparents just having fun picking up the names. It doesn't mean that the children are going to follow, but some do though. In terms of neighbourhood, it is normal here to befriend those who just move in the first few days. Then the relation will continue as times go along. The best encounter is to share food, other than smiles. We also have a neighborhood community group or association which will help a lot especially to combat breaks-in or burglary other than organizing sports or feast events every now and then. At least in my place here, we used to do that. Probably due to the teaching of Islam which says be good and nice to your neighbours. However there is a few choose to isolate themselves from the community group especially younger generation nowadays. Maybe when they grow older, they will definitely mix around better.

Food giving to neighbours are common in many countries in Asia. For Muslims ofcourse the practice is even further developed due to the idea of be good to thy neighbours and Ramadhan is month of good deeds and charity..we take this seriously and it doesn’t matter who is the neighbours like their religious background and all..ofcourse many non Muslims in Msia at times reluctant to give food to Muslim neighbours due to their uncertainty of which is halal which is not..but they will give something else like probably sweets or cookies which are safer food to give..but i think in modern generations the tradition is becoming less taken seriously...

For your question on how long do we stay in one place?.... Well, the longest is 36 years for me at the place i am staying now and the shortest is 6 months....but even though only 6 months, we r in good terms with the neighbours .... Here we even have whatsapp group for our neighbourhood or condo compound ..... We exchange gift/food for every celebration..... Some even brought foods for others if they knew is someone is incapable of cooking due to ilnesses etc.... During last MCO, my cousin's condo community arranged for then to take turn to buy food for breakfast etc to be put in the multi purpose room for the entire condo block to partake , this they say to help the roadside food sellers generate some income and also as alms giving...

"Abang" in general means "older brother" however in verbal context, "BANG" is more commonly used for older brother while "A-BANG" is more affectionate. Also "Adik" just mean 'younger sibling' with no gender. If you want to be specific, you say "adik lelaki" for 'younger brother' and "adik perempuan" for 'younger sister'. Also with the naming, you don't have to follow your parents. It's normal for them to get excited but it's completely your right to name your own kids. They'd be really happy tho if you consider their ideas.

Well, excuse me for this late comment. Sharing food with neighbors during ramadan is also for expediency. Like neighbors with benefits. Say, everyone prepares one type of dish, then, one shares with all neighbors and normally, the receiving will also reciprocate by sharing his/her dish. So if you have 5-6 neighbors living closely, you will end up 5-6 dishes to be shared for break fast. Even though you only prepare one dish ONLY!
