They are not Prostitute they are COURTESANS. Courtesans used to be expert in Dance, poetry and etiquettes. Elites used to send their children to them for teaching etiquettes. Many Courtesans were powerful in history. It was reputable profession until British came.

This shows just how great Bharat India was before the British destroyed India. India was the richest nation in the world before the British stole and looted all of India's money and exploited India. British would have never taken over the world if it wasn't for India as the bank. India was known as the golden bird for their defense wealth of money and gold. And the diamond bazaar - India was the first country to ever discover and mine diamonds for 300 years. After 300 years diamonds were found in South Africa by the British.
But the Mughals didn't send the loot money outside of India . The msjor difference. I am not defending them. Both were vicious selfish ruthless conquerors.

This culture & language are more inspired from Lucknow & Urdu language of India, which isn't native to Lahore. This story is from Lahore of British India from 1940s, not from Lahore of Pakistan post 1947.

Heeramandi was home to Tawaifs (courtesans not prostitutes) who were exceptional artists with primary job of being entertainers. It was the colonial era when the area was confined to being red light district home to prostitutes. They are shown fighting for their identities not only for the country.
Yeah. These Tawaifs were present throughout north India. Mainly in cities like Lucknow, Hyderabad & Lahore. They were an icon of north Indian Urdu Culture! Unfortunately they declined & demoted due to British oppression!
It is independence era.. see Farida Jalal's character has phone. Courtesans were anything but prostitutes they were artist who lived outside social norms just like movie actresses today....They were custodian of art and culture. The closest comparison is Geisha. That is why in Tilismi Baahein song Aditi Rao looks horrified looking at Sonakshi Sinha's character doing cheap cabaret as custodian of culture, it was beyond their dignity to dress and act cheap. While some were involved in sex work most courtesans were mistress of high and mighty.
They weree courtesans.. theres a difference. They were usually muslim and only Nawabs of higher people cpuld goto them and they were actually artists. They used to sing and dance only and shared bed with only their one man. Not all the coming customers. They were noble.
The truth that "how barbaric mughals kidnapped hindu worshiper female dancers and forced them into prostitution at Heeramandi" is simply ignored made me hate this series
