One of the best pieces of advice I read on this subject, many years ago, was that when picking a name, you should imgine it being yelled across the park in the strongest local accent to your home, and if it stands up to that, then go for it!

Not sure if anyone has pointed this out yet, but "David Mitchell's Soap Box" was conceived as a marketing campaign for a recently launched Men's Skincare Brand in the UK. The idea being that they were a no nonsense brand, so David Mitchell's acerbic logic was considered a good fit. It backfired spectacularly when DM did an episode on Male Grooming, which basically ripped into precisely the kind of product he was supposed to be selling and so they dropped the campaign.

Moon Unit Zappa is the real life name of the daughter of the real life (late) Frank Zappa. His other kids are Dweezil, Ahmet Emuukha Rodan and Diva Thin Muffin Pigeen. I’m surprised David didn’t have more to say on the matter. Musicians giving their children stupid names is nothing new: Gwen Stefani named her son Zuma Nesta Rock, Ed Sheeran called his daughter Lyra Antarctica and David Bowie named his son Zowie Bowie (Zowie has since changed it to Duncan Jones).

This will lead them to perpetuate the silliness.......just imagine the name of a 4th Generation Geldof :)

I have always liked the name Adrienne and it was on my own list of names. I do find it interesting that in the uk, as a girl's name we would pronounce it the way it is written - with the emphasis on the last syllable - whereas in America they seem to pronounce it the same as Adrian.

Only Fools and Horses is not a common UK saying (that I'm aware of, maybe it is in East London!) but the meaning is in the theme song, "why do only fools and horses work?"

David Mitchell's soapbox was co written by the genius comedy writer John Finnemore who has also written a lot for 'that Mitchell and Webb look' (originally 'that Mitchell and Webb sound' on radio 4) the UK has a long history of radio comedy that has gone on to be adapted for TV. It probably wouldn't work on RU-vid but I would love it if you were able to check out the BBC radio 4 comedy sketch series written by John Finnemore - John Finnemore's souvenir programme and his brilliant radio sitcom 'cabin pressure' about a small crew of a charter plane.

I recently re-listened to the whole run of Souvenir programme, there's the expected few weak sketches throughout but it has frankly some of the best and tightest written comedy I've ever heard in my nearly 4 decades on this planet, he just has a phenominal brain when it comes to setups and payoffs, it's the perfect blend of dry wit, satire, awful puns and sillieness. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nROK4cjQVXM.html - one of my favourite sketches I send to my American friends.

I remember when these Soapbox episodes were still being made. Finnemore was asked how he came up with the scripts for them, and he just said that he took David down the pub for an afternoon drink, waited for him to get angry about something (usually a few minutes) and then just sat there taking notes while David ranted!

I think a good example of doing this right is Turkish parents in Germany and Scandinavia that name their sons Deniz. Sounds like Dennis but is a different name in Turkish that means 'sea'.

@@AlastairjCarruthers Yeah, but Kara is a pretty unusual girl's name here and Dennis is a straight up boy's name, so I don't think that would work. I think the closest to working name among the world's seas would be Filipin Denizi (the Philippine Sea) and that's only because the sea is named after a person xD. A more common girl's name that works in both contexts is Selma.

In some countries the "state" birth registry have a banned name list, most on the list are for logically understandable reasons; no names of rank or title (eg. Prince, Commodore, Duke), no offensive or swearing (A*hole, etc.), and no special character names (accentuation yes, random keyboard sneeze no - Æ yes, ♡ no).

And then there are countries like Iceland which have a whitelist of “allowed names” from which you have to choose. I think France used to have this too, I don’t know if they still do.

@@odorikakeru I believe Iceland is irregular in the world where the four cardinal family members have different surnames (although this may only apply to naturalised/native people), where the male child's surname is their father's given name with -sson as a suffix (Leif Eriksson is Erik's Son), the female children have -dotir as a suffix and their mother's given name (Freyasdotir is Freya's Daughter), also the wife doesn't change her surname either.

My childhood friend was an Adrian but everyone called her Addie. I think it's a lovely name. There really is no name that's safe from being mangled - my sister's initials were B.L. first name Barbara - she endured years of Babs and Barbie then for no reason at all, my dad started calling her British Leyland (after the car company) and that stuck with her for years. I had long fingernails growing up and spent much of my childhood being called Freddie, after Nightmare on Elm Street 😍 Whatever name you start out with, the nicknames will pile on as we all know. I would love to know if you and Queen Boomer had any nicknames growing up. xx

My mothers rule on names for us kids was that she did not use a name already in use in the family. As the eldest and for a long time only son I was named Trevor. I had 3 grandfathers and an uncle name George so there was no way I was to be called George. Mum never realized that my initials would get me nicknamed after characters who advertized Television Listing magazines on the telly.

Working Dog Productions from Oz will hold it's own against British Sitcoms and Panel Shows shows, The Barbie Quiz from Have You Been Paying Attention is Champagne Comedy. Also, Frank Zappa's best interview is with Norman Gungston, the Little Aussie Bleeder that left Chech and Chong speechless for 2 minutes, broke Sally Struthers and run rings around Ali in the early 80's; and if you ever see a photo of Australia's Watergate -The Dismissal, look for the short black jacket sleeve with long white cuffs and a silver mic on the left of Gough Whitlam.

Since David Beckham and his wife chose an area of New York to name their child after - Brooklyn - maybe you could follow his example and choose a name from London. Peckham, maybe. 😂 PS 'Moon Unit' was the name Frank Zappa gave to his daughter, though she now goes by the name of just Moon.

If you wanted to do more That Mitchell and Webb Look, what you could do is watch the "best of" videos on RU-vid. They are a much more manageable length, they tend to be good quality, and because it's a sketch show you don't really need to watch full episodes for context, because there basically is no context!

When the name 'iPad' was first presented, tech journalists (especially female ones) mocked it relentlessly, now it's as commonplace as 'television'. And no name is safe from inventive mockery.
