Yeah fairy bread is a nz iconic childhood food 🤣🥰it’s meant to have butter/marge and 100s and 1000s sprinkles all on them, it’s yum with peanut butter and Nutella too with the sprinkles
Many year's ago when i was a little boy i used to think other kid's that ate fairy bread were weird....but then again - as a kid i used to eat tomato sauce sandwiches. lol
My mother used to send me to school with tomato sauce sandwiches. Absolutely hated them and usually threw them away - they weren't a swappable commodity.
OK, please tell me you didn't do all of that in one sitting!!! I love Baked beans on toast too and you eat it with a knife and fork, not just a fork. I love asparagus rolls but then for me it's a memory back to my childhood. Most of that food I don't eat but probably did when I was young. I'm glad you enjoyed the Kiwi onion dip, it's always a go to for us in the summer!
Yes we did! We are very...talented that way. I don't even want to tell you how quickly we ate all the leftovers of everything 😂 I love the idea of beans on toast, but I feel like I'd rather make them myself because I assume the Wattie's baked beans will be soooo sweet. And that dip was so good!
The weetbix with marmite one is better if you cut them in half horizontally first to make it less thick. Eating the whole piece is a bit of a mouthful 😅
Maybe one day if I recover from the horror of factory farming in the US I'll be brave enough to try eating animals again. If so I'll start with fish! It is definitely the most tempting, being here in Aotearoa :)
@@Becca.Loveless You should not try to recover from those horrors, whilst they still exist.I admire you for investigating your food and how it is reared🖖🏼
Keep your lolly cake in the freezer and just cut off a piece whenever you feel like it. Love Your Videos but I feel sick watching you eat all that sweet food
I'm a kiwi living in Texas. You guys are awesome trying out our kiwi grub. When I moved to Tx sausage gravy and biscuits was weird to me 😆. White gravy...unheard of in NZ. Chicken fried steak got me so confused and smothered with white gravy...what??? Now I love it
A cookie is associated with chocolate chip. ALSO, cookies are associated with soft cookies like subway cookies. Literally any hard cookie is a biscuit. Hopefully that helps 😊
I don’t know the way that you made the Milo but here’s how I make it :) Heat around 3 cups milk and 2-3 heaped tablespoons in a pot on medium heat on a stove. Mix regularly (if you want it to be frothy then mix it a lot for bubbles). Take it off the heat when the milk starts bubbling. This is for 2 servings :)
Don't like cookie time either home made is better. Baked beans on toast is way better than spaghetti ...but eat with knife and fork. Growing up in thec60scivthought pizza had spaghetti and cheese on it...didn't discover real pizza till the 80s
Home made is so much better! I want to make my own baked beans because I have a feeling I'm going to think the Wattie's baked beans are too sweet. I am actually laughing over here! Spaghetti pizza with cheese 😂
PS. You are supposed to microwave the CookieTime cookie, still in the wrapper, that helps soften it up. Yes, you are right. A lot of Kiwi foods and recipes are quite specific with how they are supposed to be prepared and eaten - and we get a little almost shocked when people "eat them wrong", lol. For instance: The amount of Marmite (with butter) to put on a slice of toast. As natives, we absorb the correct ratios for these things as children, and then just assume it is all obvious. The other example of this is Jaffas and Pineapple Lumps. They aren't supposed to be bitten, you just pop them into your mouth whole, and then suck them for a while until they warm up and go soft. Then you can start chewing.
Whoa! I would have never thought to microwave the plastic. That feels wrong haha. I love how specific and particular Kiwis are about their food. Everyone is so passionate about it, and there's such a strong identity around it 🤍
@@Becca.Loveless Microwaving the cookie in the plastic wrapper keeps the steam in which softens the cookie & melts the chocolate. By the way; The original Lolly Cake recipe uses Fruit Puffs so try making it with those sometimes.
Hi guys! Your responses seemed spot on to me! In my opinion, there is nothing special about cookie time cookies, burger rings ARE salty, spaghetti IS soggy, crunchies ARE a weird texture, lolly cake IS very sweet (I do like all of those foods). I’m not keen on Milo. It was a staple when we were kids. They changed the recipe a while back and as I recall, there was a public outcry. I think they changed it back after that. You’ll never go wrong with Whittaker’s - you’re right! Asparagus rolls are good with some homemade dressing (sweetened condensed milk mixed with malt vinegar) and some pepper and salt. Also, we used to eat fairy bread as kids with butter and honey on the bread, so the sprinkles really stuck. Great job on the afghans and lolly cake! Love your vibe, love your channel (just new to your channel, have only watched a couple). Really appreciate the way you’re exploring and embracing kiwi culture. Hope you’ve been ok through lockdown. Take care! Ka kite! [kah-key-tay]
Thank you so much for your comment, and validation that I didn’t offend everybody’s childhood memory of these snacks 🤣 We are loving everything here, can’t wait to be out of lockdown and exploring again.
Golden Rule in New Zealand, if you'd call it a Cookie, we'd call it a biscuit. What you'd call a Biscuit we call a Scone ;) and when they say teaspoons with Milo, use a TABLESPOON hahahah. Also, I'm SO pleased you loved the Lolly cake, I made it while in the US for friends i'd made and one girl Actually cried she loved it so much and made me teach her and her mom to make it LOL.
What’s the vegan products like at the grocery store in NZ? Like vegan meats, cheese, yogurt, etc. Whats your favorite vegan product from the grocery store?
My favourite way of having milo is one teaspoonful then top it up with hot water and however much milk you usually like in a hot drink. It's definitely a bit of an odd flavour, if you're expecting a hot-chocolate type experience! The other fun way to have milo is in cold milk, but it doesn't really mix in - it's mostly an excuse to eat the milo powder by itself!
We had such a hard time stirring in the Milo in our cold milk! Glad to know we weren't the defective ones 😂 And your way sounds good! We'll have to try it soon. We now have an almost full bag in the pantry to get through..
Becca! I love how excited you looked at the start of this!! haha. Asparagus rolls...yeah I would probably try using fresh asparagus and cook it so it's still nice and crisp, but to be honest, while there always seems to be a plate of them at funerals, there always seems to be a large amount leftover too so your reaction isn't that different to most peoples haha. Can't say I'm a fan of them at all. As for Mallowpuffs, my brother always smacked them on his forehead when he was a kid to squash them down, I have no idea but I bet he's not the only kiwi kid that did that! And burger rings...my mum never used to let me and my brother have them in the car cause she hated the smell of them!
and onion dip is just dangerous! Could go through a whole bowl of that on my own.....if you don't have vinegar for it, you can always use lemon juice too.
Fresh asparagus would be soo much better, especially roasted and slightly crispy. And we were all weird as kids. I grew up eating flaming hot Cheetos, I could eat a whole bag of those in one sitting, and I could definitely do the same with the kiwi dip. 🙃
As a kiwi I love your videos :) FYI, butter, never margarine on hot toast, it melts and tastes awesome. It makes the spaghetti and baked beans taste nicer, especially on Vogels toast (I prefer cold on hot toast others like hot on hot toast). Also your toast isn't brown enough, most would consider that under toasted. Vogels needs 1 3/4 - 2 times more time than white bread. Looking forward to your next video :)
I use onion dip instead of butter in chip sandwiches, it tastes great. I also do it with cold roast chicken sandwiches, strange combination but so good!
Yip def Fairy bread and cherrio sausages at a kids birthday party! It's not the recipie BUT i love putting icing sugar/powdered sugar into my afghans rather than granulated sugar. I love lollycake from the fridge and instead of the eskimos putting chopped up pineapple lumps into it. The Onion dip i found out my accident is actually yummy on steak but you are vegan but i have had it on a grilled large mushroom the best is a cold milo with a 4-5 tsps of milo into it mixed in - try the milo straight from the pkt/can I have it with a burger bun half with melted cheese on top of the spagetti.
The recipe we found used confectioner's sugar. They turned out pretty great I think! Not sure what a real afghan is like though. Pineapple lumps in a lollycake?? That sounds interesting. I'll have to try it out someday. I bet the onion dip is good on everything 😂 Melted cheese with the spaghetti makes it sound more appealing, for sure!
I'm not sure I want to try it again 😂 But it probably would make it a lot better. Maybe next time I go to a funeral I'll get the chance to eat a real Kiwi made one.
I'm imagining cinnamon rolls, but with marmite and cheese. My first thought is barf, but then my next thought is it actually sounds pretty good? I'll have to make some soon to find out!
The popularity of most of these foods was established more than 40 years ago, when food options in NZ were incredibly limited compared to today. They're the kinds of foods children enjoyed in the 1980's. I wouldn't eat most of them myself today, there are far better alternatives. The biggest exception is Whittakers chocolate, which is even better now than it used to be because they started using Swiss rollers.
I love the red licorice! Billy really likes the black ones though, so he ate them all 😂 And next time I'll make my spaghetti from scratch! No more tinned spaghetti for me 🤣
So spaghetti is nice and more of a childhood food that kids grew up with. It was more of a quick meal if time wasn't on your side, my mother would make home made meat balls with herbs, garlic & onion then when they are cooked you add the can of spag just to warm through!! P.s Don't use margarine always use butter margarine is no good 🤢🤢
Tim Tams, Fairy bread and weetbix are actually Australian and Tim Tam slams should ideally be done with tea or maybe coffee. Milo can be done two ways, get a coffee mug, three teaspoons of Milo, add boiling water leaving room for milk (to taste) and sugar. The other way is a tall glass of milk and add Milo to taste. Your baking way spot on by the way 👍🏼 The “toast” you used had no colour on it, it should be toasted brown in colour and slather margarine or butter on the toast while still hot and then heated spaghetti and it should be heated on the stovetop rather than microwave for better results, asparagus rolls are one of my favourites on your video here, I struggle to keep my consumption of them seemly whenever I see them on a table spread of food at a function and funerals are only one of the functions you’ll see them at, any function where finger food is appropriate you’ll more than likely see them make an appearance 😁
Some people also put Jaffa’s (one or two at a time) in hot chocolate, then scoop out with a teaspoon and into your mouth and crunch into them… the chocolate should have become liquid 😁
roll thin sandwich bread around the asparagus - so it looks like a sausage roll, put a tooth pick in it to secure it. One of the reasons for canned foods is to do with earlier life when there weren't "all round get it every season" foods, and a hang up from the colonial days... Weetbix and Milo were for children who weren't thought to be able to handle adult foods...and probably cheaper options than other foods. However I'm an elder and we never had those options - hot milk with cocoa, porridge, I did however have weetbix in the summer at boarding school, absolutely hate weetbix & as for Milo, oh no. But we did have tinned spaghetti, (don't call that noodles). Noodles arrived in NZ when the Asian ethnic people migrated here & no self respecting Asian would label them as noodles IMHO ... (I'm sure if I was in the USA - I would bungle your snacks and foods....but at least you are trying some of our foods...congratulations)
I love how everybody has a different way of eating everything. I wouldn't call the spaghetti in a can noodles, probably been in there for a long time. Thanks for watching!
YUM! Afghans! YUM! Asparagus rolls! Yum need milk in the Milo and milo in cold milk is yummy cold chocolaty drink but make it with 3 Tablespoons (or more!). You'll be making those things for your toddlers bday parties. Fairy bread, lolly cake, cheese rolls etc. Yum! Love Crunchie bars, I can buy in some places in the States. Yum spaghetti on toast with 2 fried eggs and 2 broiled sausages, also try baked beans on toast. Kapiti (CAR- pity)
Good to know not to follow the instructions on the package! We'll try Milo again but with lots more Milo. Beans on toast sound so good! I'll have to make that soon.
The Milo is best if you book the milk with a spoonful of Milo in the cup and one sugar. Do not put tree spoonfuls into a cup as it would be bitter. Weet-bix is best served with cold milk and a sprinkle of sugar and bananas cut up on top. Tim tams are great dunked but not as a straw. And Maggi onion dip doesn't need the lemon juice or lemon juice if you want it to keep in the fridge. Moro bars are better heated in the microwave with ice cream. And pineapple lumps are better if they are soft. Twisties ate great to taste as are salt and vinegar chips. The difference between cookies and biscuits are there size. Happy eating. 😀
Try weekbix with Milo and milk, and a little bit of sugar, instant up and go 😅my kids got me on to it ,after i took a day off from work 😮i wondered while the tin of milo was going so fast😅❤ anyways love your clip , have a good one mate's 😊
Good job on the Afghans. Your toast needs to be brown and crunchy it will make a difference with the spaghetti. Also you can add a little grated cheese and put under the grill for a min. Delish
I'd never considered that asparagus rolls were very Kiwi but that's mostly because I have very intently tried to avoid them at every opportunity! I think cheese rolls are more of a South Island thing. I'd never heard of them till I went to Dunedin. The traditional way of eating Mallowpuffs at my primary school was to smash them against your forehead and pick off the chocolate. As an adult I don't personally recommend the method but it was The Way when I was a child. Also glad to see Kāpiti Ice Cream! I grew up in Kāpiti (KAH-pit-ee)when they still had the original factory there. Raspberry and White Chocolate was an excellent choice. Loved the video :)
Put 3 tsp Milo in a mug, add 1/2 - 2/3 milk, add 1/3 boiling water, lightly stir, nuke for 35 seconds ( in my microwave, may differ with yours ) ... perfect. ( may have to add a little more sugar to taste. )
Lol Love it..... Most of the treats are for children, I'm 60 and I remember most of the items from my childhood. White bread, because basically once upon a time that's all we had. Collectively, our pellet was very bland. Meat (mutton, not lamb) with 3 veg (but not asparagus, that was very exotic) was the gold standard, accompanied of course with white bread and butter! Butter on everything, lots and lots of butter. At school camps and such, we use to have a challenge to see who could eat the most Weetbix covered in peanut butter, without a drink! The plants look excellent, you must have the touch. Questions..... Between the two of you who is the fussiest eater? And do you guys eat sea food? 😀👍
This is what were recommended to us. Maybe after lockdown we can try more traditional dishes and not sweets and snack food. It is very enlightening and entertaining to try all these food/treats that were staples for people and compare that to what we ate as kids. All somewhat similar but also worlds apart. 😀
Loved your reactions. 😅 Whittakers is so good. The one with whole almonds in is my favourite. Well actually haven't tried a bad flavour yet. 🙂 Yum pineapple lumps out of the freezer. 👍 Not a fan of tinned asparagus, prefer freshly cooked. I know a lot of people love white bread but I find it so stodgy and prefer multi grain. White chocolate and Raspberry muffins are also delicious. Haven't tried the ice cream though. Sounds good. Vegemite on weetbix sliced in half is good too. Just spread in thinly. Grew up eating that as didn't like it soggy. Didn't realise we kiwis had so many odd ways of eating our food. We just grew up doing it that way. 😆
It was such a fun movie to do, and try everything. Probably too many sweets! I’m sure some of our American snacks and things we grew up with would be odd to you.
Love that you nailed the weetbix, butter and marmite. Made peefectly. Handy rule of thumb when it comes to marmite or vegemite is the butter to mite ratio.
You need at least 3 tablespoons of Milo add hot water to dissolve and then add milk. It also much better if you warm it up. The TimTam slam is also better if the Milo is hot.
Totally enjoyed the vid, Becca. Your reactions did make me smile... A LOT!! You guys are incredibly awesome!! Hope you're both holding out OK during this lengthy "Lockdown". The longest yet I think...for Auckland that is. But please hang in there you guys.
3 teaspoons isn't enough. I think they put that on the packet for serving size because it's mostly sugar so it makes it sound healthier if you only use 3 teaspoons. As kids we'd dump it in there 😂
@@Becca.Loveless not sure if used water or milk but it’s best with milk!! most people i know have it with a glass of cold milk just pour your glass and load it on top, no need to stir and then eat with a spoon and drink the rest!
Asparagus rolls should only be made using boiled fresh asparagus, never canned asparagus (which is mushy)…then roll inside buttered white bread with a sprinkle of black pepper…they are a party finger food, not just for funerals, lol 😂
All the recipes called specifically for tinned asparagus. I guess it's an older "delicacy" 😂 and back in the 60's fresh asparagus was very hard to come by. But I'm new here 🤷🏼♀️😂
@@Becca.Loveless Hehe, we’ll, yes, is an old recipe, and at least you can get tinned asparagus all year around…but if you want them to actually taste good, you need to cook up fresh asparagus 😉😁
Interestingly I've seen a few people using 'cookies' in NZ. In general 'biscuit' is still always used when they're homemade (or at least hand-made), and a 'cookie' is a mass produced. Calling an Oreo a cookie would be pretty normal.
Just a little baking nerd here haha... Technically a biscuit should snap if broken in half because they contain more sugar. A cookie is much softer because it contains more butter. A Cookie Time was the staple of any school canteen of the nineties and naughties. You can call them whatever you like here in NZ- we understand! If you want to try on your Kiwi hospitality, invite someone around for a "cup of tea and a bikkie". 😉 Nice to stumble across your channel!
Any type of cookie is a biscuit. But some use of "cookie" inevitably sneaks in. Eg. the brand "Cookie Time". Also "chocolate chip cookie" is common due to the alliterative nature of it.
I'm 60 and lived in Auckland my whole life and have never had "fairy bread", it was mainly for kids parties. I also hate asparagus with a passion, if it touches my food I'll throw it all out. Put an asparagus sprig on my meat pie and you DIE! Those cheese rolls are a Southern thing. Spaghetti always comes in a can, and Watties is the best, so are their baked beans.
Who the hell recommended spaghetti on toast and fairy bread. I think kiwis are so use to what they grew up with that they think foreigners might actually enjoy it too but personally I would never recommend certain snacks like burger rings but yes gotta love our RJ's and Whittakers range except the RJ's black liquorice of course 😂
You want to make asparagus rolls with fresh asparagus, so much better! Will be available soon as Spring. Tim Tams are an Aussie biscuit, not Kiwi. Moro's are awesome in the fridge and bars like Snickers and Mars are left for dead!
While fresh asparagus might be better, the traditional asparagus rolls have always been tinned. We simply didn't have any other asparagus back in the day. I went to a party recently for an elderly man and there were loads of asparagus rolls brought by others. Perhaps a dying tradition :)
I loooove fresh roasted asparagus so I'm sure I would love it. And for some reason I knew Tim Tams were Australian, but I was mistakenly under the impression the Tim Tam Slam was created in NZ. Whoops!
Deep fried mar's bar! L&P, Foxton Fizz, and Mousetraps (half a bread roll with marmite spread on then grated cheese placed on top. this is then toasted under a gril until the cheese is crispy)
Fairy Bread is generally made with Honey but I guess some people might use Butter. I'm a 40 yr old kiwi and never tried Weet-Bix coated in Butter and Marmite, but I guess if you're flatting and have no money you might eat that lol - Cheese Rolls are normally toasted way more. The Afghans look spot on, well done. Anzac biscuits are yucky in my opinion, but you're right, A LOT of ppl like them here. Asparagus Rolls are better if made with fresh Asparagus. But like most things, Asparagus is an acquired taste. Lolly Cake looks great, well done. Its so delicious. I don't like Cookie Time biscuits myself and agree with you, they are kinda bland. And Goody Gumdrop ice-cream is yucky so I agree with you again there too.
@@Becca.Loveless The Griffins family lost control of the company, and the corporate cost cutters ruined the quality, the same thing happened to Cadbury in the UK.
Millo. 4ts millo, 2ts sugar, 3/4 boiling water, 1/4 milk. Best way to make it. Best way to eat weetbix , warm milk, 2ts sugar, 4ts millo, 3 weetbix bricks. Mash all together and enjoy Chocolate porridge.
The 70's called they want there Asparagus Rolls back 🤣. That Kiwi dip is a "don't knock it till you try it" l poo pooed it for years then one day l made it and OMG yes yes yes l was hooked, it's so simple and so good. My NZ Friends holding out on me, lve never heard of an Afghan but since seeing you guys try them and Googled the recipe ld love to make them, same as the lolly cake that looked so good. Goody goody gumdrops are a no for me also. I think an extra Suitcase might be needed (carried on board "for the Baby" of course😉) full of Whittaker's chocolate to take back to the US that Chocolate is life 👍
We have full plans to come back with a suitcase of Whittakers and RJ’s licorice! 😂 The asparagus rolls have a lot of younger Kiwis saying they’ve never heard of it lol. And kiwi dip is so good! Not the healthiest, but so addictive 😍
those cookies in the packet are grosse.....homemade always better....frozen pineapple lumps? no way you want the middle soft.....and gumdrops dont go with icecream ever....have you tried lewis rd creamery chocolate milk which has whittakers chocolate?....you two are very entertaining, another good vlog.....
Bit late to the party here. Pizza buns. Hamburger buns, put on some tinned spaghetti not too much, grate over some cheese, maybe a bit of chopped onion or slices and bake. If you want to get really fancy, slice up a polony/saveloy and put some on the top.
