YES, Rick Monday, you are my hero! I'm not a hockey fan, but the Miracle on Ice was so incredible!

I come from a family that's not big into Hockey, but even my parents watched that Miracle on Ice match. Of course I grew up hearing about it (born in 81 btw), so I was just as excited when I saw that same team (coach included) light the cauldron at Salt Lake. It makes me wonder who will light the flame in LA in 2028 because we had the Miracle on Ice team in 2002, and Ali in 1996, so it definitely has to be someone very inspirational and an icon at the same time. Showing bias here, but I am hoping it's Keri Shrug who lights it since she did the impossible at the 1996 Olympics.

♥ The 1980 Olympic Hockey game is an inspiring story. I don't know how long of a reaction you're willing to go, but there's a documentary called Do You Believe in Miracles The Story of the 1980 U S Hockey Team 2001 that is definitely worth a look. The parallels between where the world was then and now are uncanny.

1980, a young girl watched the Miracle on Ice, and a die hard hockey fan was born. These are moments that make this American girl super proud of our athletes! Rick Monday, Mohamed Ali, not a dry eye in this house. Joe Lewis & Jesse Owens, and of course our tattered flag in 2002, yup, I'm proud!

There’s an amazing video (Boatlift - 9/11 narrated by Tom Hanks) - a little known story of evacuating Manhattan on Sept 11, after all roads, bridges and tunnels were shut. It’s not long at all, highlighting ordinary people’s role on that day, so very uplifting. Please do it.❤️

They really underplayed the Miracle on Ice. You should react to a video just on that!

To your point at 4:42, while the population is much larger, at that point the Soviet Union was pretty much just as big. Plus, there had/has always been an air of "superiority" from traditionally "great" European countries that looked down on anything Americans did.

Not to mention China who has over a billion people and gymnastics was one of their big events just like Russia.

The thing to remember is that back in those days, the East Block paid all the training expenses for their teams. Not in the US. Athletes in the US pay their own way and training except what they may get in school, and even then, they might not even get that if the sport they do isn't done in school.

Yeah all of the money falls on the families and their communities. I know this since one of my cousins become a Paraolympic Athlete and he did win a few medals. Very proud of him. It definitely helps if you get a sponsor.

2/22/80 "Miracle On Ice" vs. USSR was a medal round game...the gold medal was secured a couple days later 2/24/80 with 4-2 win vs. Finland.

In that 99 World Cup finally you point out the difference in the rules of the goalkeepers today but that doesn't mean anything considering the Chinese goalkeeper of that year had the same advantage.

We have the population - TRUE BUT Our Interest in certain sports vs. Lack of Interest in others (USUALLY meaning none at all) ... we do tend to be ALL IN or Nothing 🌎 if we Like It - ALL HANDS ON BOARD ! 😎

There were times after Olympic losing athletes from other countries asked for asylum, because they would be tortured, imprisoned or facing death for losing. Asylum was given.

In my grade school 6th grade (10 years old). I believe we started. I grew up in a part of the country (Pittsburgh area of western Pennsylvania) where wrestling was big. Some other parts of the US it was not as big and they did not have this as part of gym. Still remember the basic moves from initial position ("referee's position") to start the match as well as the counters to those moves. I ended up being mainly a basketball player, though. Moral of the story? Don't get into a tussle with a Pittsburgher as you might get quickly tied into knots. :)

Been a while since you two did a hockey related vid. Why not do it on the Miracle on Ice? React to "MIRACLE - The Greatest American Sports Moment of All Time" by Joseph Vincent. Shows some highlights and history of the situation.

The Russian team didn’t leave the ice but stood in admiration of the celebration of these kids. The Russians were veterans of the game and were professional. Still gives me goosebumps after all this time.

Population doesn’t mean much in sports. Russia dominated ice hockey for DECADES despite having a small population. Today Canada dominates America in ice hockey with a much smaller population. I think it also matters how popular the sport is in a home country. China has the largest population in the World but they rarely win.
@Ecrocken

I'm not sure we have much of a population advantage over India and China, both of whom have had much less success.

During the Cold War anytime we beat the Soviets was a big deal. I suppose that could be said of other countries as well. The USSR was one of the greatest threats to the free world at the time. I always feel for athletes from some of these countries. When they lose what happens to them? We have granted asylum to some of them over the years. Joe Lewis and Jesse Owens are heroes of their time. Showing up Hilter was a huge deal.

It is true that a large population helps the odds but the proper denominator is the number who actually participate in the sport. American men are typically at best mediocre in soccer. This is because participation in soccer is not as high as in other countries--such as they UK where I would guess nearly every boy plays soccer(football) as their primary sport. When I grew, and it has not changed substantially since then, NONE of the best athletes played soccer--they played football, basketball, baseball (and all three often), but not soccer. Hence, all of the freakish athletes you see from the US in football and basketball, especially--people who played these sports beginning at a very young age, do not see a soccer field outside of the occasional game in gym class. If things change radically and these freakish athletes in the US shift to soccer and away from these other sports, I believe there would be a seismic shift in US chances in World Cup competition.

That would be some Americans not all. This has been going on since WWII and split at the Vietnam War into 2 with the anti-war movement. It is the conservative viewpoint and you do understand this is a propaganda video?

What makes it rare for an American girl to win a gold medal in gymnastics is that unlike China, Russia and at the time East Germany, our gymnasts weren't sponsored with state funds. In other words the other countries paid their gymnasts training, and salaries under the guise of being members of the armed forces.
