If there's anything that is close to the Swedish soul, it's melancholy and that's what this song is all about, and many places all over Sweden are mentioned where people feel melancholic, and Swedes in general can relate very deeply to that. Also Jerry Williams who almost never sang in Swedish really shocked his audience with this emotional live version of the Ted Ström song that already had been a hit with Monica Törnell a couple of years earlier. So the song was very famous, but the audience did not expect the even back in 1990 legendary rock singer Jerry Williams to interpret it, and when he did it with such skills and passion it was a sure hit, even if it does not sound like a typical commercial hit tune. Thanks for another great video, always a treat to see your reaction videos.
I have a feeling that this type of "melancholic AOR" was at its peak in the late 80s. I'm thinking of Eva Dahlgren, Marie Fredriksson, Tommy Nilsson, Niklas Strömstedt, Freda, Ratata and others, all of whom made it to the top of the charts.
You should also checkout Jerry William's John Lennon cover "working class hero".He had so much stage presance intensity and belive in what he was doing.
Fun fact: Jerry was a really good dog handler with several dogs on the highest level of obedience and protection. It was always a treat to hear his voice on the competitions.
"Vintersaga" is not really representative of Jeryy, but the live version is one of his strongest performances in his late years and was very popular with his fans. You should hear the Monical Törnell version for comparison, which has a rock steady tempo with a lot of synths, to create the same eerie winter melancholy feeling but in a different way. This is more an intrpretation than a cover, actually. And this wasn't all the verses..
Oh and the main point is actually the lyrics, that "will" send tingles dwn the spine and a tear in the eye of every. single. swede. over 35, because they capture the "old" sweden melancholy to a level of relatedness not may other things can. There is something for veeryone to recognise and feel in this song. Every swede know *exactly" what is it like to be freezing in queue for the "stadspub" (the one open pub in in a small town), and exactly how a "tradare i snörök" looks. It is a summary of how winter feels, that evoke a mysterious feeling and "you just know" what they're talking about. We all know how "kärleken får leva mella nattskiftet och drömmen" (love lives betwen te night shift and the dream, fueled by cheap wine). This is the music of the old working class. by 1990 it was nostalgia for a time gone by already. It would make 16 year old me long for times gone by, and my parents cry. its magic. Also, its a recent volvo commercial, (amande bergman version) with really nice imagery. THe Jerry Williams version lacks the driving synth riff of the Monica T and Amanda Bergman versions though the guitars are awesome. You really should compare all three.
This is an interesting cover that I never heard. It’s not a swedish classic. The earlier version sung by Monica Törnell (in 1984) is the real swedish classic version of this song. Just saying.
He has captured the soul of Sweden, how we can feel, what we don't acknowledge, what is hard and tough, and just about being a Swede at times, and through time, in generations, specially at winter.
In one video you requested some swedish religous songs, and this is one of the most well known ones. It’s a psalm, so it’s often sung by a choir or the congregation in church. It’s been recorded countless of times, but Freddie Wadlings version is hauntingly beautiful. He is also a very interesting swedish artist that you definetly should check out!! You won’t be disappointed.
Everyone thinks Sweden is all about over produced pop. (I blame mello for that 😜) But “det svenska vemodet” is even bigger I’d say, for better or worse 🙂
Nu när du är inne på "Jerka" (Jerry), så måste du kolla in hans version a Working class hero, live. leta upp den som är 6,36 lång. (Postad: 3 juni 2010 )
Never heard it too. It’s an interesting cover / interpretation of the song Vintersaga. But with so many swedes never heard it this version of “vintersaga” is not a Swedish classic. The song ”Vintersaga” is a true swedish classic though - but with Monica Törnell from 1984. That version is widespread known. And I think Jonathan should do a reaction to that more famous version too.
Great song! Can really recommend the version made by Amanda Bergman for a Volvo commercial. The video and song is really powerful together, just don’t think of it as a commercial haha!
Second stanza: In Malmö, the fog is scratched by the sirens of the ferries And on the other side of the strait, the world begins. A lone Volvo toils against the headwind on the Tjörnbron The cinema in Pajala offers "Deliverance" The Lapland night train roars like a wild beast through the night The farms turn off their lights A storm-whipped Marstrand prays it´s Pater Noster Stockholm city sways in its intoxication That's when the great sadness rolls in And an icy, grey-cold wind blows from the sea.
The song was originally thought as a theme song for a Tv-program about swedish geography and winter. The program never got made, the song though was too good to not be published. All other artists lack the truest winter chill, this one does, even in summer it makes you shiver.
This is pure Swedish "saudade", and I think the great lyrics, not necessarily rhyming poetry, and Jerry's feeling and powerful voice is what makes it so good. Ted Ström wrote and composed, Monica Törnell recorded a very good version.
We do often like folkvisor. Jerry had before that had many years on top, and with all rights could make this beautifull folkvisa. I hope there are coming other songs with Jerry. even covers.
I'm always forgetting, pro reactor tip: After you pause press the left arrow button so you go back 5 sec because everytime you pause a part gets cut and sometimes it really ruins the flow of the song. Your reactions look so pro compared to when you started. I usually hate this kind of videos where they put pictures matching the lyrics, they are usually terrible BUT since the lyric describes some very specific places I think it was a great choice for you, you got a tour of Sweden at the same time.
This is more like a bizarre extreme version of the hit song from Monica Thörnell who had a big hit with it. You should have heard that first. Extremely beautiful work with the synths in that one.
This is just something i wanna put out here in the comment section. My grandfather is actually Ted Ström. I would highly recommend you to listen to some of his songs:).
I would love to see your reaction to another swedish legend. Who is still alive. I´m talking about Ulf Lundell. His greatest hit is "Öppna landskap" from 1984 (I think). This song got so popular that many people wanted to replace our national anthem with "Öppna landskap". But he has been very productive so there are hundreds of other songs to listen to as well. He is inspired mostly by Bob Dylan , according to himself. But he is also influaenced by Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen. You might like him!
No offence men...
Earlier you said one time, that you didn´t really understand the sadness in a lot of the songs. You didn´t get the "vemod". Hopefully you get it now! ;-)
Den här versionen påminner mig lite om Phil Collins' "In the air tonight". :-)
BTW If you do this by J Williams from Börsen, why not do 'Working class hero' the best version of that song if you ask me. It is in English though but it is so good.
I agree. Totally different from the original. When John Lennon sang it he sounded ironic and almost mocking. To Jerry who was a convinced socialist the song meant something else.
That's the Swedish "folksjäl" for ya! I think that's why it's so big. You need to put it in context: You are bone tired, fighting your way home against the icy cold wind blowing sleet in your face. It is february, it's been dark for 9 months and you will never see the sun again. You have worked 12 hours nightshift at the factory for minimum wage and the only thing you have to look forward to is 2 weeks of summer heat before it gets cold and dark again. We all know it, hate it and feel it in our bones. 😉😂
+1 to all comments below. The Monica Thörnell version of this may be better. Atleast gives me a lot more swedish chills than this one even if this is also great :) Monica Thörnell version was what was played on the radio. Anyho... Enbodiment of swedish melancholy. Please revisit it ;)
@@JonathanRollinssthlm305 ok too bad. Thanks for the work you do love the reaction on Pierre Isacsson - då går jag ner till min källare especilly. I show it to my friends and they also love it with the deep voice surprise 😂😂
"Börsen" is not a place, it's a famous restaurant and music stage in Stockholm, with history ties back to the 1600's. sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamburger_B%C3%B6rs
@@linabing9181 Yeah but I perceived Jonathan as meaning a village or town, so wanted to clarify, well meaning. If he means he wants to do a show at Hamburger Börs, by all means, atfer corona why not?

The Jerry Williams version sucks so bad. Even the Ted's original blows it away. I'd even go so far to say that the volvo commercial version is better than Jerry Williams. But what you'd really like to hear is the Monica Törnell's Vintersaga.
@@linabing9181 Oh the song itself beside the lyric is great...especially the original with Monica Törnell. Just to get a perception of what a classic song is to you...give an example then? Because most swedes I know would definitely define this one as a swedish classic..
