”Torka gruset från en barnakind” as a father of three and the youngest being five, this simple but important line really gets to me. So much is said in this song, so simple but yet so much meaning.
Peps is a national treasure! He introduced the blues and reggae to the cold people of the north. And about the weed.. Peps has been smoking since the 60's and has not been shy about it either. His second album was called "Sweet Mary Jane" and was released in -69. If you are curious about his blues songs, i'd recommend "Falsk Mattematik" for a upbeat song and "Samma lea snea blues" for a real slow blues. There is a great live clip of the latter here on YT. I'm glad you enjoyed Swedens coolest hippie =)
I think you need to understand Swedish people's bond to nature and summer to understand the full meaning of the song. It's precisely because we barely see the sun or green or life for half the year that summer is so special for us. It's when everything comes to life again. RIP peps
Fun fact: Bob Marley once said that there is only one white guy that can sing reggae, and that’s Peps! True story. ;-) He did a lot of good records, also singing the blues. ”Oboy” is the family picnic-song, but he is also very political and serious. One of my favourites: ”Varför blev jag terrorist?”
@@nielsenjesp Hes a humble man, lives real at a place in the forrest (close to Emmaljunga) that I think have no road at the end so you have to walk on a trail to get to the house, have hens and grows some food himself, seen him a couple of times when I lived in close proximity (Kristianstad) there between 1999-2005, if you listen to Timbuktu who also have a house somewhere else in the forrest also (Degerberga) were he use to stay, I think they played together and hanged together atleast earlier in Timbuktu and the group Damned that Timbuktu played with.
Peps' skånskified reggae covers are gold. Check out Rotrock (cover of Roots Rock Reggae) and Liden såg (cover of Small Axe). 'Stressen' is groovy and has a great message, too.
Peps being so happy enjoying the beautiful weather so much is ALL of us Swedes when we leave the dark months and get to enjoy our beautiful summer and even spring, don't say you haven't seen our euphoria when the sun finally comes out LMAO
I love seeing a reaction to this. I work as a personal assistant for people with disabilities here in Sweden and for some reason they LOVE this song. Everytime I go home from work I say "I never wanna hear Peps Persson ever again!" :p
The weather is a big thing in Sweden! Also, Peps is one of the few exceptions we have that actually knows how to play reagge and blues. There are many stories around Peps. One is that he went to the American South and played the blues there, and the audience got angry, because he was too good - "You should not come to us as a foreigner and play better than us!". Not sure if that one is true though. One story I know is true is that a person recognized him on a train and they started talking. Peps was on his way to a music festival, and the person didn´t see any luggage, only Peps guitar. The person asked if he didn´t have any luggage? -Of course, said Peps and pulled out a toothbrush from his back pocket. :)
A lot of Peps' reggae songs are quite full of satiric political commentary, and It's kind of ironic his most known song is just happy. About the weed thing, he has a song about how he hates living in a rental apartment, one of the reasons being he can't smoke his weed in peace without the neighbors freaking out XD. His blues repertoir is not insignificant though, and he does actually play a sick blues harp.
I´ve never listened to "Oh Boy" in November before... but it's such a nice song to listen to on one of those lovely summer days... that now seem so long gone... Btw comedian Robert Gustafsson did a parody of Peps Persson, on one of the most popular Summer TV-shows "Allsång på Skansen", and the next time he showed up together with the real Peps. ( You can check out the video: "Allsång Peps & Peps" ) . Yes, this song is sung in a really thick Scanian accent, "skånska". Scanian accent could be a bit difficult to understand, so it´s good that you had the lyrics.
Any Skåning that dies is too soon. Swedes on the other hand, I don't personally see any loss, if everyone above Scania died a painful and torturous death, but that's patriotism for you, So that only leaves Skåne, Halland, Blekinge and about 1/3rd of Småland alive. And I'm pretty damn fine with that. When Peps died it was a great loss though, it's always a loss when a relative dies. Even if it's not a close relative, but relatives are relatives.
This made me sooo nostalgic! When I was 7- 8-ish my grandfathers wife would always put this song on when i came over and we´d dance around singing at the top of our lungs hahah
Why do you think he is so ecstatic for the good weather? Because it's so rare. You don't get that kind of elation for the sun from a Californian singer.
If you're interested in other classics in skånska, I recommend Timbuktu - Det löser sig, The botten is nådd and Alla vill till himmelen. Not quite as thick dialect as Peps though.
For me classics are from 60-90's but maybe because I'm getting old. Some older skånska could be heard by Björn Afzelius and Mikael Wiehe. I can recommend this video with Mikael Wiehe from one year after the Utöya massacre. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KYm7_sTLhjw.html
Per "Peps" Persson was considered to be the first in Sweden to introduce both Blues, Reggae, Ska, Calypso and Soca "with Swedish lyrics" ! (South Swedish to boot) . The music had off course been played before , but not in the Swedish language before, with a few exeptions like Povel Ramels "The Gräsänkling Blues" written in 1951. He released his first blues album already in 1968 as "Linkin' Louisiana Peps" and even recorded a Blues album i Chicago in -72 with Sunnyland Slim, Carey Bell, Mighty Joe Young Band, The Aces, Jimmy "Fast Fingers" Dawkins and his band (in English) . A very prolific artist and on top of that a very humble and nice guy. R.I.P Pelle ❤💙. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-B2belAs32PI.html
Your reaction to his accent is hilarious :D I'm from the same region (Skåne) and I find it funny too. And the lyrics are totally dripping of weed, haha
Fun fact. Peps Persson was peeforming at malmo festival one summer a few years ago and a friend of mine was working as a stage worker and Peps asked him if he wanted to share a joint with him.. and he did😄🤙
It's the accent of Skåne (Scania)! My college at the school I worked a few yrs ago had a class that performed this song with singback at the celebrations before Summer holidays. One pupil acted as Peps. They were around 10 yrs old. They were great!!! 😊😀
Currently smoking a joint in Sweden as i type this, so yes, we do :D It used to be a lot more taboo than it is today, but i can guarantee you that Peps has smoked what might have been called "Jazz-tobak" in his day :D
I went to see him perform in 2005 or something like that, and it was such a great time! Peps was, of course, smoking his pipe on stage, and nobody cared. I mean, he hardly went anywhere without it. Anyone else wearing or smoking weed in Sweden would get arrested. Well, maybe not Kenta either.
His best blues album is Rotblos. Chicago blues tunes with Swedish re-interpretations and his thick southern accent/expressions. Pistolblues is just great. His version of Howlin’ Wolf’s 44 Blues. One of Sweden’s best harmonica players. His extraordinary drummer just passed. Had he been American, I wager he’d been world famous. A great live act, Peps & Bosse!
Peps is an absolute treasure, and this song is probably his most well known song, but you should really listen to Falsk Matematik to hear more of his own brand of blues rock!
As he died recently you should react to more songs from him, this is his only single but his most famous songs are "Hyreskasern" and "Hög Standard" or "Falsk Matematik", he has been #1 in the 90's and is truely large, largest in his own genre and a true Swedish classic, although his most famous songs were censored and not played on radio at the time they have millions of plays on Spotify 40-50 years later. I recommend "Hyreskasern" for 70s reggae style, or "Falsk Matematik" for more bluesy
In the song "Hyreskasern" he sings "Vi kan inte röka vår holk ifred" (or rather "vi kan ente röga vår holk ifred"). Holk refers to a pipe with hashish.
I have heard this song before but never seen the video! Its so good actually in the summer under a blue sky with ☀️ i hope you seen my songs on instagram 😅
Peps Pärsson sings in a broad Skånsk accent. My mother is from Lund in Skåne herself and was little radical in the sixthies and seventhies and lived in a collective and she liked Pepps Pärsson
oboj what a lovely weather the sun is shining to day oboy no heavy clothes is needed to day and I like that..... It is a fun happy song, sung in a swedish accent.
Check out also Hyreskasern also by Peps. I don't think Oboy is really typical Peps, and Hyreskasern was a kind of hit in the 1980s also to a wider public. It coincided with another "hit": Kolla kolla by Nationalteatern. Also to be checked!
The lyrics makes one even more joyful, and emotional actually, but who can resist this tune? It's the one to play a rainy day, whether it's the weather or soul raining. This is just a great smile!! Also, me originally being from the Stockholm area, this is the few times I love this kind of dialect from Skåne, the southern tip of Sweden. The standard opinion on their dialect is that they speak with a hot potato (or hot porridge) in the mouth 😂! It's not really that bad, and it varies tremendously much from one part to another, despite the relatively small area. However, I believe you have to be from Skåne to fully appreciate it's beauty..?😅 Anyway, this song gains something undefined from Peps' dialect. 🥰
Another south Swedish singer/musician you could check out is "Kal P Dal" (not his real name), who basically did dirty garage band rockabilly and blues rock in the 70's/early 80's. Hilarious guy, also super-talented. Died in 1985. As for weed...we're not really against it. There's a bunch of loud religious types who think it's the Devil's Lawn or whatever and they drive a lot of the sillier side of the debate about it, but in truth we've never been super-hysterical about the ol' wackygrass.
The bad weather for a lot of the year is what makes us SO HAPPY when the weather is actually nice. (But it isn't too bad when you get used to it. Seldom too hot.)
I just found your chanel, I like it. =) Im looking for a good video to put on FB to remember Peps Persson - that left Us this day. =( Never meet him - but a goofy good musician. And as a Skåning (Scanian) I loved how he allways talked that talk =)
Not a classic but Timbuktu feat peps Persson- dynamit. Super groovy. But for classic def Idas sommarvisa. You have probably already heard this. From an astrid lindgren movie but sung before summer holidays in elementary schools. Also Det gåtfulla folket. Forgot the artist sorry. Very famous childrens song.
@@JonathanRollinssthlm305 it's based on a series of novels. My personal favourites are Du Måste Finnas and Guldet Blev till Sand. Both from the Minnesota concert!
When i was little i lived neighbor whith Peps Persson. Door to door at Rosengård in Malmö . He had lots of weed on his balcony 😎, everybody could see it . But we lived at the 7'th floor so maybe hard to see . We , kids allways thought he was a strange kuf . Very funny to see this video 👍
Hey, Jonathan! Glad you liked this and thanks for the positive vibes! For a more blues inspired Peps song, I recommend you check out 'Falsk matematik'. For another reagge song check out the classic 'Hög Standard'. Both with a more serious lyric content but very different music wise.
Ragae and Skånska is a great match...
