What sort of time frame are we looking at from full molten state to solid for, let's say, a 1/2" dia x 3" long ingot of a crystalline alloy? Minutes? Hours? Days?
This seems like a similar process to how Germanium crystals are made for radiation detectors. I'm pretty sure those are single crystal too, and the method was developed at a different national lab, I forget which.
