Amex offers are the key. Everything else being equal, a good Amex offer on a restaurant or any merchant can boost its value beyond the annual fee. The problem for most is the barrier of entry of a high annual fee even with the credits.

The two main reasons I tell people to not get the Amex Gold card are if they can't get value from the credits naturally and if they don't want to use their points for travel. Of course, there are more reasons you should avoid it as you mentioned here, but there are also a ton of reasons to get it, so you just have to weight the pros and cons for yourself. 👑 Where the Gold Card really comes into its own is if you can Maximize all of the credits AND you carry a corporate card. Great video Sebby! I’ll be getting rid of my AMEX Gold next year. I had planned on it last renewal, but I got an ok retention offer, that made it worthwhile to keep for another year. I personally value the Gold’s credits at 50%, based on my situation, including the hassle of remembering to use them each month. This year I got the Citi Premier, with its 3x on groceries and gas. Being a single person household, the extra 1x (4x v. 3x) the Gold gives, doesn’t cover the extra annual fee cost, in my personal card value calculation. *My calculation doesn’t even factor in that when my Chase Freedoms have a 5x quarterly gas or groceries category, I use those cards for gas or groceries, and buy some gas or groceries gift cards to use outside of those elevated quarters. Good bye Gold card, we had fun for a while, but I don’t ❤you anymore. Thanks for the memories/Sub! 😊

The gold card really is my workhorse card. Restaurants and Groceries. Add in the Uber Eats and Dining Credit and it is only a $10 card and that is before the coupon book offers all year long. A few fav restaurants end up being 6X with offers. On top of that I tend to move my gold card points to Hilton when they have a high transfer bonus so in effect I get 9.6-12X Hilton points from using the gold card. Far higher than my Aspire card earns for non-Hilton expenses. Even at .06 cents each, that is 5.7 - 7.2 per dollar spent on the gold card and I tend to get Hilton redemptions at not .06 each but .099 each this year. I couple this with a couple platinum cards, the Aspire card, and a few more Marriott cards. My latest Diamond Status experience in Santa Barbara, California was spectacular and it was all points and certificates and sitting looking out on the ocean. 👑 Johnny-O

Same! It’s my workhorse card and has been since 2019. Credits are a tad annoying to have to use but it’s not hard. I set a monthly reminder to use both credits and I always eat out on the weekends so I’ll just get food via Grubhub and Uber eats and do it that way. For a net $10 AF card this is a heavy hitting point earning card. As long as you’ll play the annoying game of using the monthly credits, easy decision to use the Amex gold daily. Nice job on your redemptions with your MR points!

The Amex gold can be so frustrating. There are so many restaurants that it refuses to give 4x to. A lot of the restaurants will code themselves as restaurant & bar because they serve alcohol (literally what restaurant doesn’t??) and Amex doesn’t count that as a 4x. I find this especially true about nicer restaurants, meaning leaving even more points on the table.

The multipliers don't seem that compelling to me when I can easily earn 3X to 5.25X on category spend with no fee cash back cards. I don't utilize rideshare that often, and don't use food delivery because of fees and up charges, Additionally, I rarely frequent any of the restaurants required for the credit. Not a fan of the monthly credits. I had the temporary monthly dining credits (that you could use anywhere) on my Delta Gold in 2021. They were a hassle to keep track of, even if I was going to use them anyway. I also had an Amex offer for 3 months of Uber Eats (basically, 3 months of Uber credits), which was not easy to track or redeem. These credits were a dry run to see if the Amex Gold would be useful for me, but I took a hard pass. The Capital One SavorOne card offers 3% back on dining and groceries with no annual fee. This is a great way to build up Venture Miles, since you can convert cash back to Venture Miles. 👑

Many MR points hoarders overlook how difficult is to redeem MR points for aspirational travel. Try to get 2 "saver" business tickets to any attractive destination on any partner airlines - it's impossible. If you find 1 way, there is no return, or crazy connections offered making it useless. It became totally impossible now post-Covid when many airlines do not allocate enough seats for redemptions or do not have advanced schedules in place to book award flights at the earliest possibility.

Anyone using the Schwab cash out method at this stage of the game needs to evaluate the Citi quadfecta. MR points should be used for aspirational travel. That's the only way the annual fees make sense especially on the Platinum. The Gold card in its current form is the best Amex card. The $250 AF is the sweet spot for 4X if you are looking to generate lots of MR points along with a BBP for general spend. The moment they raise the AF on the gold you'll see lots of people move on because of the physiological barrier of spending too much on fees. Regardless of credits or coupons that they may add.

I considered the AE Gold because of the no foreign transaction fee and the fact of being accepted in most places. I wish it would offer some kind of credit towards signing up independently with Priority Pass or the Centurion Lounge program. Priority Pass membership is being offered for $254 first year with 10 free admission/yr . Must pay for guest. From what I am calculating it seems a better deal than the Platinum $600++. The airport lounge perk is clearly equated in the yearly fee of all these cards offering the perk, and the perk is greatly modified. Appears to me as a better gamble to get the Gold card and separately buy the Priority Pass Mmbrshp than pay the yearly fee of the AE Platinum.

We never use Uber and none of the restaurant options are in the Daytona Beach area, so @ a $95 annual fee the Blue cash Pref is a no brainer.

👑Well all I can say is oops too late. I just got my gold card in the mail this past Tuesday. I do use the monthly dining benefits because I allow myself to get takeout once or twice a month. I occasionally use Uber, but I'll have to use it as Uber Eats to make up for the slack.

Good info…Thanks! I’ve been in the personal Amex family since’04, and the Amex business gold was my first business card 01/2022. I now have 4 business Amex cards (Blue Biz Cash, Marriott Bonvoy and Lowe’s). What’s the total limit on Amex cards you can hold…business and personal? It’s an OK card, and they actually called me bright and early the other day to explain the gold benefits bc I rarely use it. I keep getting platinum business offers for 150-160K points. If a product switch is allowed, will the $295 AF I already paid be credited to the $695 AF? I want the platinum for the Global Entry and lounges at a minimum. 👑

👑 - I did read a post on Doctor of Credit not too long about AMEX sending out a survey to Business Gold users about a potential increase in the annual fee ($295 to $350). When I read the fine print, one of the potential changes floated was additions to the 4x categories for rideshares. Wonder if that could be the case for the personal Gold

👑 Can you do a video on good end game cards to go after? I’m at 4/24 and I’ve been sitting here just applying for business cards instead lol. Also for the gold card the perks overall are good. I just wish I had a shake shack and Cheesecake Factory that were closer to me. It’s a bit out of the way to use that $10 credit so sometimes I’ll just do a pick up order for Grubhub instead.

$240 credit values around $200 for me. I haven't taken a taxi for several years so I'm using Uber credit exclusively on Uber Eats, and the only dining credit option available to me is Cheesecake Factory, so I'm spending that mostly on Grubhub. Both platforms have around 20% higher cost for nearly every restaurant around me (comparing against ordering on restaurant's own website or calling). Oddly enough, the only option I found that does not charge anything extra is KFC.

That’s how I feel too. February will be my anniversary for year 1 of the golf card and I may cancel for that very reason unless I get a hell of a retention offer. I’ve used every single Uber credit on Uber/Uber eats and every dining credit on grub hub or shake shack. But Uber eats and grub hun up charge everything so it barely covers half of a single person meal most the time. On the hunt for a good dining/grocery combo card. Definitely enjoy collecting mr points but $250 a year is kind of expensive for the lack of credits you really get

@@willdrake254 I got a retention of 20k pts earlier this year so still gonna keep it for several more months, after that I'm probably cancelling as well. My baseline solution for dining/grocery is my custom cash and my wife's custom cash.

Seb i was at 4/24 an was going to get the chase sapphire preferred with the regular intro bonus but before I could amex offered me the gold card with the 90,000 point bonus.. I couldn't pass it up an went for the gold card. It's my first charge card an so far I really like it no problems but I know I will be asking for a retention bonus. An I must say it does feel good when I pull it out (first timer) I am however locked out the sapphire until next year but I'm ok with that the 90,000 points I will do my best to get as much value as I can on a yolo trip....was I wrong?

I get what he’s saying but if people who are tighter and don’t spend as much were wondering….. You only have to spend $520 a month or $6,200 a year in restaurants or groceries getting the 4x points to break even on the annual fee and that’s if you don’t buy anything else for travel, etc, or use the credits. So that helped me see if I would break even or earn somethin. Hope that helps someone.

whether or not the gold car makes sense entirely depends on if your lifestyle can take advantage of the uber and dining credit. i personally hate the taste of shake shack, and much rather amex adds other restaurants for the dining credit, but i pop in my neighborhood shake shack for a beer or lemonade once a month, and read the news on my phone for 15 min. and yes, for the record, shake shack sucks, in n out is supreme.

If you're spending $3k on dining get the Platinum (yes, the Platinum, not the Gold) through the Resy offer. Right now it's 125k + 10x on dining (yes, 10x) for the first 6mo. Get that, _then_ get the Gold after 6mo.

but then you would pay the $650 without having a chance of using all the credits if you are not plan on traveling for the next 6 months. ALso having a card that short and cancel is not an idea tho. Also too short of a period for retention offers.

Offers. Have had the card 4 years next month and have redeemed almost $700 back in offers on top of the credits. I'm literally being paid like $150+/year to have the card. Unfortunately so many small restaurants around here are now charging CC fees of 3-4% it's really eating into the benefit of the 4x points. (crown emoji)

I think one thing it needs is to add more credits than make it a little more useful for some people who do not eat out a lot like maybe $10 grocery credit a month. And they need a Schwab version of this card to get 1.1 cents per point or at least allow to redeem for 1 cent per point. I personally am okay with the credits since I use both Uber and grub hub. Other than that this card is one of the best cards out there. Hopefully they just add more credits and keep the annual Fee the same. And if they make restaurants 5x that would make it incredibly amazing

I always refer to statement credits and annual fees as essentially buying yourself a gift card to something. Would you be willing to buy yourself a gift card to that thing. For example i personally wouldn't buy myself a gift card for uber eats and GrubHub so this card isn't worth it to me. But like im heavily contemplating venture x because yes i would buy myself a gift card to hotels

Gosh I just had to click on this click-bait title, but you actually have some good points! For me, the Gold card is the best thing since sliced bread. The credits make the card pretty much free, and the points make the profit. I like that the Uber credit can be used on transportation or food, and for food you do have a pickup option… it doesn’t always need to be delivered. Grub hub has many restaurants that I already go to in the system, so I can pickup the food I’d already buy. As someone who eats out a lot, this is a steal. 👑

This was really good!!!!!! I was considering going for the gold but after your review I'm leaning towards the platinum. That is because of the welcome bonus. The Centurion Lounge access and travel perks. Before I get that I'm going to get either the CSP or CSR. Leaning towards the reserve because I'm already approved. I do some heavy traveling and want to benefit from the 300 credit.
