Welcome to a brief introduction to the exciting world of AmiCube development and my current side project, ReAmiga 1200 assembly. Currently, my focus predominantly revolves around porting the Minimig AGA core to Spartan-7 and delving into Verilog development. Nonetheless, I make it a point to stay engaged by assembling a few A1200 boards sourced from Mr. John. I've found that maintaining this hands-on approach is crucial to staying sharp in the field. Let's dive in!

Great stuff! I know it’s not as big of a market, but I hope you someday consider making an FPGA Amiga board with rear ports and a floppy port in the A1200 form factor. That way a person could order one of the new A1200 cases now being manufactured from molds, install your board, a floppy drive, and build or buy a keyboard to have a complete A1200 FPGA. I will probably buy one of your boards and make one of these by modifying it.

I have an 3000 case that I would love to be able to put something like this in. along with floppy and ide hdd support

Yes! This is something I am thinking about for some time. Imagine 100% fpga replacement for A1200. Including all the ports, expansions, floppy and IDE headers etc.. At some point we will get there I am sure.

When the custom chips NOS finally runs out, fpga is the only way. Perhaps someone could make replacement chipset ICs using fpga on a castillated PCB as a drop in replacement for the PLCC ICs. That would extend the life of existing Amigas. I'm sure someone somewhere is already considering doing this or have done it already. I know the keyboard MCU was already done using a atmel microcontroller. I've soldered my own ReAmiga board by hand and thought of it as some kind of rite of passage lol! It feels great to have built one by my own sweat, blood and tears. It's crazy expensive though, I think I've spent upwards of 800 euros for one machine (I got parts for 2). Hopefully your projects will bring down the price or keep it from raising to keep it more accessible.

Indeed. FPGAs are the optimal choice due to their accuracy and ability to expand the functionality of original chips. They represent a sweet spot in current technology. However, I'm optimistic that in the future, we'll be able to produce ASICs at a much lower cost. Perhaps we'll even see home ASIC printers someday! With the rapid pace of technological advancement, anything is possible! ;)

if the AmiCube board has the capability of using a real floppy drive, a ide harddrive and the ability to use a real amiga keyboard I will absolutely be buying one.

Yes, I will implement Zorro II.

When the pick and place machine places the component on top, is it soldered right then or like you describe on the bottom it's held in place by a kind of glue that I assume has solder that will melt in the re-flow stage?
@amicube
@amicube 5 месяцев назад
When component is placed on the top by machine, it is not soldered. At that point components are just floating on the pads. Then from pick and place machine board goes to reflow oven where soldering is done.
@flomojo2u
@flomojo2u 4 месяца назад
Maybe the creator can clarify this, but do you place the bottom components without reflowing them, then place the top components and reflow everything, or do you reflow twice-- placing the bottom components and reflow, then place the top components and reflow one more time? Without glue, I'm curious whether the unreflowed solder paste or the surface tension of the reflowed solder holds the bottom components them in place.

I don't understand why you didn't integrate the trap door ram board onto the main board and eliminate the dodgy connector.
@amicube
@amicube Месяц назад
Good question. If we are talking about ReAmiga 1200, this board is trying to be replica of the original design. I assume this is the reason Chucky decided to follow this path.

It's a great video. I just hope to point out the great work of hyperion is done on back of unpaid developers. It's not a thing they are owning them (at least I hope not) they're just working for free.
@amicube
@amicube 5 месяцев назад
I would like to know more about this topic. This is news for me. Is there any dispute about this?
@vertigoz
@vertigoz 5 месяцев назад
@@amicube there's an interview with Camilla Boemann, one of the 3.2 developers, on obligement where she states: 'We are given free reign by Hyperion. But at some point, when the software is good enough, Hyperion takes over and does the actual release. We are not paid, and that is how we explicitly want it to be.' You should be able to check the full interview by this info, I won't be posting the link since yt might just erase the post altogether. It was stated before but on this interview is clear cut. I've seen elsewhere some talks about having some software being used by Hyperion in one of their OSs without consent by the author, but I wasn't able to pin point it, so take it with a grain of salt.
