I might just be a crazy person but I hear like a slight pop or click every beat in "the gateway" and a few other songs, but it's not consistent. Is that supposed to be there. I also noticed it in the flac I downloaded from band camp. Anyway keep up the good work. I love everything I've heard from you.
I love the mesmerizing yet chilling and awe-inspiring music you employed in this game. You are a marvel indeed!! It is hard to say which tracks are my favorites here but the Arcane Expanse still reverberates in my head even today :)
DUSK and AMID EVIL soundtracks are topnotch I am waiting with anticipation Prodeus and Wrath OSTs They should be epic as always We see in composers Andrew Hulshult and we already know that it is label of quality
That's right, Andrew. It's quality Music, and your Soundtracks are an addition to my hearing when it comes to training. Even for me, his music for Doom Eternal TAG1 and 2 is much better than what Mick did, I have listened to Blood Swamp and the world Spear more times than the campaign mode music.
Dusk, Amid Evil.... From now, everytime I see a game with the soundtrack signed by Hulshult, I will get as excited as a girl seeing "hans zimmer" on a poster movie!
Hopefully this reminds more modern FPS devs that they can use this formula too and be successful. The modern day games have all the technology at their disposal. It would be something really special to see a combination of gritty modern tech along with the tried and tested old school formula.
I wonder is Andrew knew how much of an absolute masterpiece Aetheres is when he made it. Seriously, the moment I got to E6M1 i knew it was gonna be something special just from standing still and listening.
My best moment in Amid Evil was in the second Act (Level with the Distilled Chaos Music). I was fighting my way on top of this castle/tempel on the hardes difficulty, next to no health or mana, and than the music from 24:20 kicks in and, wow, one of the most epic gamer moment of my life, really.
This soundtrack is one of the best I've ever heard in a video game. It really is something special when it actually creates the atmosphere of a game, as an integral component, rather than just something tacked on.
The audio creativity in this work compliments the visual design perfectly and is quite possibly the best game ambient audio I've ever experienced. I especially loved the third to end track (Achlys).
Playing this game, looking at the visuals, and hearing something like Aetheres, that really makes you feel like a sentient being fighting gods. Like you're taking a break at the gates of heaven and hell in the middle of all evil. Amid Evil, literally. What a great game.
I hugely appreciate putting in the visual level loops. Having not played the game it provides an excellent visual backdrop to the music. Truly an amazing experience and now I must play the game.
Had to comment already even though I just opened, love just having those credits and title screen in the beginning, and the insane production quality with all the footage
This is one of the best retro FPS I have every played! I'm a big fan of heretic, hexan and unreal and this game takes the best aspects of all of those its just simply amazing! The soundtrack blew me away and its rare that I have the music at the same level as the sound effects but I can't help it its just that GOOD!
This game is a slow burner But man, does it burn good Took me half year to complete, and now I want to restart immediately The most beautiful of boomer shooters
Dropping into the void for the first time and being greeted by a non-euclidean hellscape as well as the track "aerugino" made me feel weak. I was walking around shapes and bridges that had built themselves for me, along with some of the steep inclines and strange enemies made me feel as if I had just stumbled into something I shouldn't have. each place before this was tied to reality, and I felt comfortable even with the steel forges and the arcane dimensions. I feel something clawing at me; urging me to turn back and not have to deal with whatever could be thrown at me, But dropping into that portal had sealed my fate. there was only two options: die, or dig deeper, and on I fought, never feeling that I was completely safe. The primal fear I felt in that place was not of what horrors lie ahead of me, but my own inadequacy to confront whatever lies ahead.
52:40 Lemniscate. One of the most beautiful, haunting, alien yet comforting pieces of music i have ever heard. We need more of this, the atmosphere it creates is just something else.
It's sad that the in game version doesn't have the violin in the early part. Anyway I say Lemniscate and Corrosion are my favorite. Numinous has great potential but is poorly executed I think.
One of the same synth hits and textures and same tempo but that's about where the similarities end. CC is a mash up of sound design, slight Shepard tones and tension risers. The only melody comes in at the end and they are not identical at all.
you know they set the scene well if you press the 'walk slower key' in a boomer shooter to admire the scenery. The OST in conjunction with the setpieces are like the champion's chiseled physique... *perfection*
The last chapter songs were so good on this game, that I bought this album and Dusk so that I can be immersed into the Andrew Hulshult experience. Well done!
If I ever develop a proper game that isn't just a doom mod, I know who to turn to for a banger soundtrack. Heavy metal and softer atmospheric music? Sign me up. Just clicking on this out of curiosity has potentially sold the game for me
I can't believe it's already been 2 years. I've been playing through this again recently, this time attempting Evil difficulty. Absolutely love your work on the soundtrack, man.
I'm late to the New Blood party. Loved Dusk and went straight to this after. Almost finished, might start right over on Evil. If we had had a game like Amid Evil in the time of the games that inspired it, we'd have lost our @$#*( minds.
Andrew, this one was pretty good. Playing after the Arcane Expanse I had to turn the music volume all the way up. I'm sure it would be better to hear the sounds of the enemies but I didn't care. It was a trip.
Aerugino and Aenigmata are such haunting melodies, they really remind me of the old times and better games... Although, whole OST is superb, Andrew is the hero we need, but don't really deserve
I really felt "Aenigmata": somehow it has reminded me of Bladerunner 2049 (dunno why) and soaked me in a space void itself. Amazing work as usual mr. Andrew, thank you!
For some reason I really like Time Vacuum. Maybe it's the progression from a very majestic sound to something more sinister, or the "end of the beginning" feel. I also like Somber Mythology, I guess because of its intensity.
They are all great in their own right, but "Aetheres" has to be one of the best picks for memorably sad and bittersweet video game music of all time, alongside Metal Gear Solid 3's "Snake Eater", Dark Souls' "Gwyn, Lord of Cinder", and WH40K: Dawn of War's "Chant".
Andrew, when you composed the music for Amid Evil, did you have concept art/screenshots/videos/text descriptions available ? Thanks for the playlist with timestamps and very nice video montage that goes with the video -- and obviously for the music itself !
I sat through the entire development with Leon and Simon. Was part of the creative process the whole way through! I love making games with these guys! It was great having Daniel Hedjazi and Chris Pollitt help out as well!
Thanks for sharing that info. It explains why the music fits so well throughout the entire experience of playing the game, great job ! Are there any particular songs in Amid Evil's soundtrack that you are especially fond or proud of ?
