Back when it wasn’t frames per second, but minutes (or hours) per frame, weekend renders were a thing. And nerve-wracking.

Yes terrifyingly so.

Don't want to be THAT person - but weekend renders can still very much be a thing with 3D animations! 😅

A single core from a modern cpu would be on the top 10 super computers in the world when the Amiga 1200 and 4000 came out.
@HoldandModify
@HoldandModify 9 месяцев назад
I know! Even when in early 2000s our render nodes were only single CPU still. We'd have 200 machines. Now I look at these ThreadRippers with 96-cores on a single chip. Insane.
@CrassSpektakel
@CrassSpektakel 5 месяцев назад
@@HoldandModify Around 2010 I replaced 30 render nodes at a customer - all Pentium4 at 2400-3000Mhz and 2GByte of memory, some even without Hyper-Threading. We replaced ALL OF THEM with a single 2500Mhz 8-Core-Xeon-System with 32GByte of memory. And it was faster. The Xeon is nowadays my secondary computer, one meter next to me. And it is still a decent system for adding a some CPU from time to time. I often use it for testing Network-Distributed computing although it is a bit power hungry.

Crazy that despite the pistorm trouncing the 060, demand for 060 still sees them commanding €400 a chip.

That screen is really good at handling strange modes? I never managed to get modern flat screen to work with my old Amiga native Graphics. But with the CL5424 graphics of my Amiga 3000 is runs nice. With Cybergfx you can define your own screen modes. On my 1920x1200 screen I use 960x600 which looks very crisp even over VGA. 1280x800 looks somewhat wonky and 1920x1200 is too much for my 2MByte CL5424-VGA. I might try if it looks better on a 1024x768 VGA-TFT which I have somewhere around. But as soon as I switch to 50hz 15khz - BAMM, end of the line.

You're comparing CPU with emulation, though! A better comparison would be RPi vs. WinUAE/060/JIT on an average desktop CPU, let's say a 5yo Core i5 or equivalent. 👍
@HoldandModify
@HoldandModify 9 месяцев назад
yes true but its more about comparing cpu expansion cards. they each use their own tech to produce the results they offer.

Destkop CPUs beyond 5 to 10 watts would stuggle to fit inside the A1200 platform and 25 watts PSU envelope.

I love that you use native Amiga modes for your stuff. Does your BFG not have a r6 060?

r5. I would not overclock it even if it was a r6. Dang things are too rare and pricey. Heh.

Q, a dumb question. I can't remember from your old videos did you have to put a heatsink on the PiStorm, do you have one/need one?
@HoldandModify

Nah. They don’t need’’em. I’m not over clocking it and it never gets terribly warm. Some slap heat sinks on everything. Even icecubes. :)

Expansion wise what A4000 provides that pistorm doesn't?

The obvious would be any Zorro cards beyond ram, HDD, you might wish to use. There are many. And of course the various video slot cards. Like the Toaster.
