In this video I'll show you how I not only added 1MB of chip ram to my Amiga 2000 to bring it to 2MB, but also completed the upgrade to be a complete ECS system!
Its a fairly easy mod, although theres some desoldering required which isn't the easiest without a desolder station and good soldering skills.
This mod could also be used on Amiga 500s too. Might have overdone the montages again!

To answer the question at the end about Denise, yes, the pixel clock phase is slightly different between OCS and ECS Denise chips. This is why the fixed logic version had a OCS/ECS jumper, it was to shove the clock signal back through a spare logic gate to add a bit of artificial latency.
@counterair173
@counterair173 2 месяца назад
This is perfect explanation for similar issue a have with ZZ9000 board. When used in combo with OCS Denise, scandoubled image of Amiga native screen is on pair with RGB2HDMI. If I put ECS Denise, I get green pixel flicker, like color and pixel are not in a sync. Is there, by any chance, a specification of latency values expected to meet if one should adjust for ECS and OCS, respectively ? Thank you.

@@counterair173I think there are specifications out there for Denise chips with timing diagrams in them. I think we are talking like 3-10ns range of difference. It has been a few years since I've measured it and I don't have notes.

I remember upgrading my A2000 to 1MB chip. Had to short a few circuit lines on the motherboard by cutting them through. Man my 18-year old self had almost a heart attack when the monitor only gave a red screen output….. turned out the SCART connector was half connected to the monitor. A little push and I had all colors back again 😁

@@RobSmithDev With this mod, do you still have to cut the lines on the motherboard and do the jumpers as well like with the 1MB chip mem upgrade? i.e. if you jump from an original 515k motherboard to the obese 2MB chip mem mod you did here, is this still required?
@RobSmithDev
@RobSmithDev 4 месяца назад
@marcusdamberger according to the docs with the PCB: “If you have 512KB of Chip RAM before installing the device you need to switch the position of J101, which is located near the power supply connector, to its opposite position. You then need to remove J500, which is located near Gary. On some motherboard this will be a case of removing a jumper, some will be desoldering a bridge and some will require cutting a trace between the jumper pads.”

The very fact that you were able to desolder the Agnus socket without causing any damage is a remarkable feat and deserves a "like"! Well done.

@@RobSmithDev Agreed! However, I must admit that in the past I have "broken" the plastic enclosure to expose the pins and then using my iron and a tweezers, picked each of the 84 pins out of the board. A lengthy but safe way of doing it. But your way is better. 👍

lol yeah that’s how I did my A500+ but then that socket was all damaged by varta leak anyway so didn’t really matter. Didn’t have the desoldering gun then

I knackered an A1200 throughhole cap pin with the same “moo” gun. You must still be very careful. Also quite a few of those pads have no trace attached so they are even more likely to come off. If it was me I’d have left it alone. That said, amazing job!!

It’s temperature and practice unfortunately. But yes there’s always a risk. The initial reapply of solder really helps, but also not pressing too hard - shouldn’t really need to apply any pressure. However maybe you were just unlucky

I made sure all my A2000s had the on board DKB Megachip and flickerfixer to free up the video slot.

Regarding the name "Fat Agnus", it's not referring to the memory it can address, but rather the square PLCC chip package it came in on the A500 and all but the earliest A2000s. So there are definitely OCS Fat Agnus. You'll note that it's labeled as such on the pre-ECS A500 rev 5 motherboard.

Those terms are the main ones on the internet with that as the description. Yeah the original original OCS is different but the fat and fatter are the same form factor

Excellent, love a good maxed out Amiga. The prevalence of modern replacements makes it possible to max out to period appropriate levels without the lottery and expense of period parts. I managed to get one one of LinuxJedi’s Ramses II boards for my A500

@@RobSmithDev lol, exactly, I was 16 when I got my A500 in ‘91 and the only expansion I managed to afford was a RAM expansion. I drooled over the A590’s and GVP addons but they may as well have cost a million for my spending power at the time. I kept my A500 and it is now maxed out to a level that would have cost thousands back in the day. It’s great fun.

@@RobSmithDev I have the ACE2b from Individual Computers in my A500 rev 5 which has a similar mechanism when plugging into the Agnus socket, it's a very tight fit so unlikely to cause any issues.

Excellent video :), It was nice to see what another option looks like to install. I went the solderless route, only so I could simply put the 2000 back to stock form if I wanted, which didn't quite go to plan lol... Just as a note in your intro you sort of suggest there is a revision of the 2000 that was 2MB chip capable out of the box, to my knowledge I don't believe that's the case the last revision being a 6.3 with 8372A with a max of 1MB Chip. Which you seem to confirm later in your later Agnus Version clarification, nice to see this explained so succinctly :) It might have been worth including the 8372B, used in the A3000, as this was an option used by the mega chip (original 2MB upgrade) and it is, I think, possible to drop one in a 500 rev 6/7 with some changes to jumpers etc and use a similar expansion to the 500+ :) ... Oh and the blown out trace on the RGB turns out to be a common-ish thing on Rev 6 2000s, found some other cases on RU-vid and in blogs, but still no idea what causes it :(
@RobSmithDev
@RobSmithDev 4 месяца назад
I’d read somewhere about the very last ones being full ECS, or at least I thought, maybe I’m mixing it up with later ones coming with kickstarter 2 rather than 1.3. Oh and I’m wondering if it was a particular common monitor connected to that port that blew the tracks out. Would make sense
@hackbuildrestore
@hackbuildrestore 4 месяца назад
@@RobSmithDev the 1MB capable 8372A is referred to as ECS Agnus and I do believe there were some later 6.3 2000s that shipped with an ECS Denise which makes them "Full ECS" in the same stock form with 1Mb Chip and ECS Denise as the 500+ but unfortunately not upgradable to 2Mb Chip... Confusing (like you said) ... and yes that would make sense if there was some monitor or scan doubler that went bad or pulled too much from the port...
@RobSmithDev
@RobSmithDev 4 месяца назад
I’ve seen in a few forums that the definition of what ECS actually means is a bit fuzzy! I guess the A500+ got it right with easy ways to add the extra 1MB. It’s a shame there wasn’t an easy way to add the extra 1MB to the 6.3 a2000s
@hackbuildrestore
@hackbuildrestore 4 месяца назад
@@RobSmithDevi guess the assumption was owners are more likely to add RTG and fast ram in a 2000 so 1M chip would be plenty in a time when PCs only had 512-640k base memory. But the 2000s hung on we'll into the 3000 reign meaning 1M was not going to cut it! 😉

@@RobSmithDev 8372a has a pin to control the default mode. 8375 does not, they are hard-coded to start up in NTSC or PAL, but both versions can dynamically switch to the other.

My Amiga 2000 is branded a Video Toaster and came preloaded with tons of cards and it also had a MegaChip on it. When my friend gave it to me (it was her brothers) it was in bad shape from battery corrosion and I had no experience with amigas. It took me a long time and a lot of combing through schematics and replacing chips and broken traces to fix it. The bummer is during that process I’m pretty sure I fried that MegaChip. I had to seek out a stock Agnus and downgrade to 1MB chip ram 😢
@RobSmithDev

@sideburn
@sideburn 4 месяца назад
@@RobSmithDev I do. I fully repaired it and got the video toaster running and all of the midi and synth software and cards working. The only loss was the megachip and I sold it as is non working. This is the one I just ordered the vinyl case overlay for. The front of it says “Video Toaster” instead of Amiga 2000. I think Newtek used to sell turnkey solution machines preloaded with cards and software. It has a GVP 030 accelerator in it, a Trump card hd controller, a AD515 synth midi card, a Syquest and hard drives and had the mega chip. And i think the ram is maxxed out. I’ve swapped the floppy drive out for a Gotek and I added an SDbox sd drive that plugs into the parallel port on the back.
