You had me at the 21:56 mark :🙂 I incorrectly assumed the jpeg would be of some pretty girl at that juncture as I saw long hair and eyes, only to be surprised to see the elder wizard Saruman appearing before me...well done! It reminded me how slow image screen loads were compared to modern machines, where it's just instantaneous (takes away the anticipation). Someone had a shareware library of demo pics for the QL back in the 90's that loaded similarly fast (lower resolution and less colors, of course -- the QL's screen loads are interesting as they load sort of in parallel along 5 banks down the screen), and one was of a cute girl, so that's what got triggered, I'm guessing, when I saw your video at that time slot. Nostalgia can play fun games with your memory. Loved the video, thanks!

Great video! Surprising the Furia doesn't work properly with MAPROM when using the RGB2HDMI - that makes me think there's a reflection issue on one or two of the connections that the RGB2HDMI is picking up! Unless it is a power / cap issue? Congrats on the Retro Rewinds Contest!
@linuxjedivideo
@linuxjedivideo 2 года назад
Power is likely. The traces for Denise in the 600 were not designed to draw the power for an RGBtoHDMI. The traces to the CPU aren't great either so I'd expect voltage drops.
@10MARC
@10MARC 2 года назад
I suspected Denise power too, Andrew... So I did a naughty thing and temporarily provided USB power to the RGB2HDMI. I know one should not do both but I needed to test the theory. No change, she still locked up within just a moment. I 100% agree it feels like a power issue though
@10MARC
@10MARC 2 года назад
Thanks @GadgetUK164 - I suppose the only way to know for sure is to scope out some of the connections and look for issues. I just had it recapped by Retro Rewind, and it is brand new Power Supply (the higher end one) from Steve Clifford. I will keep experimenting and see what I come up with.

Another great Video. I still want to get a 600 for my collection good to know there is an RGB to HDMI option. Wish there were an AGA pi solution for the 1200. And yes you need an Amiga CD32! Not just to complete you collection but because its one of the best Amigas ever made!

I couldn't find anyone selling that cool Denise adapter at the time, and I was impatient, so I ended up soldering all the wires to my A600 motherboard! :D Works absolutely fine with my Furia though, and I have all its features enabled. I wonder if your Furia's being adversely affected by some electrical interference from that Denise adapter right under it?
@10MARC
@10MARC 2 года назад
It is very possible. Where are you getting your power from? I wonder if pulling power from Denise is causing an issue for me. You use Furiatune to map the ROM?

Nice that you 'won' the Retro Rewind Contest! I'm gonna drive up the street tomorrow hopefully and hand off my stored and barely used Amiga 600 to Frank to recap it professionally. I'll wait till next month to do my Amiga 1200 but I'm not convinced I'll need to do my Amiga 3000 at all. Keep up the great Videos. -Mark.

Thanks for another great video :D I have the white version of the Furia. I bought it with a Sandisk CF card that was 'approved' to work with the Furia. I am only using Kickstart 3.1. I still had a lockup now and then. The only way to get rid of these lockups was to use a CF to SD card IDE adapter. I tired alot of CF cards. They would all give me lockups with the Furia. Using IDE to SD card made it rock solid. And again, I am not using the later kickstarts. Only plain old kickstart 3.1.

@@larsenmats The Furia is a known problematic accelerator. If you watch Chris Edwards channel. He had to re-flash the card himself via a JTAG connection. If you can’t do this, then you have to send it off to the Furia guy, who can do this for you. I managed to get my White Furia working with 3.1 but using a Revision 1.3 mainboard and with a Transcend 4GB CF card. Even then using Furia tools with the IDEspeedup setting would lock the system up.

I bought a 2nd hand Furia 40mhz. I thought I will struggle to get it to work with my 'brandless CF' card. But to my astonishment, it work 100%, no problem at all. I'm running the original V2.05 KS. Maybe I'm just lucky.

I remember the past a bit differently. At the time the A3000 came out few could afford it and the great pc migration was gearing up.

A lot of us Amiga Fans did just scoff at the Amiga 600, and honestly for good reason. I picked up my Amiga 3000 in 1992 or so... And I did compare it with PC's of the day. A 386DX would have cost about $2500 - $3000 considering I had to have a new monitor, and a 486 would have been about $4000 or so. I was not even remotely tempted by the dirt cheap XT's and 286's of the day... They were a joke even when compared with my Amiga 500. In the end the $2100 or so I spent on my A3000/16 MHz in the early nineties felt like a good deal.

Nice to have more options for the A600. I do own a Furia it works but it's a PITA. I have it installed a spare unit and its a work in process. I just don't have the time to play with it. I like the A600 for its form factor. I would not single out the A600 as a cheap computer because Commodore built everything as cheap as possible, yet our beloved Commodore Computers are still running today but are very fragile.
@10MARC
@10MARC 2 года назад
I think they went "Extra Cheap" on the A600. Everything being surface mounted instead of socketed, cheap caps, etc... And yes the Furia is infuriating! Just when I think I have everything stabilized and working great... BOOM! Another lockup! I am going to try a few more SD cards... Many people have better luck with them. On a positive note, 3.2.1 seems marginally more stable than 3.2!

Who makes the mounting adapters? For months, I've been trying to find a good solution for mounting the hdmi connector to the back of my A600 that has its rf modulator removed. No one seems to make the adapter plates. You and Jan Beta are the only ones I have come across that have some kind of plate that allows the hdmi to be to the A600 motherboard. I don't like have a ribbon cable handing out of the back of my A600.

I saw that on the video, but I never saw it on the monitor! It sure looks like the RGB2HDMI was glitching, but I had Cookies image up there for about 10 minutes and never saw it in person. I can't imagine my camera caused it, but it's weird.

I bought an Amiga 600 many years ago for $100. I hated it and sold it a couple of years later for $200. I have several Amiga 500s and 1200s and some 2000s and 3000s and one 4000. I thought briefly of buying another 600 just to own one but I really did not like it so decided to pass on getting another one. The RGB2HDMI project is amazing but I wonder if the PiStorm isn't the better way to go.
@10MARC
@10MARC 2 года назад
I agree the computers you kept are simply vastly superior. I cannot even get the PCMCIA to work reliably on my A600. The PiStorm project on the A600 is currently full of bugs and terribly unstable. I don't doubt that it's for the same reasons I am getting such unstable results. Our little A600 is just meant to be an 68000 based cheap and cheerful machine.

Hi Doug did you ever find a work around for the lockups. I've got the same issue and I have a Furia also if I remove the cpld adapter it runs fine no issues as soon as I plug it back on the chip I get lock ups I think the issue is the adapter is drawing to much power.
@10MARC
@10MARC 2 года назад
Yes I did. I threw the Furia in the Trash and replaced it with the A630 accelerator. Problem 100% solved, several times faster, no PCMCIA issues and works with 100% of all CF and SD cards I have tried! (no... I did not really throw it away, just retired it)

@10MARC
@10MARC 2 года назад
That would be nice, but the RGB2HDMI solutions only support 12 bit color (4096) - not the 18 bit or 24 bit color the AGA Amiga supports. Maybe if it could be done with a better Raspberry Pi like a 3 or 4... But I don't think there is a ton of work being done on that. The MK III is a great solution, but a lot more expensive!

Nice video Doug. Just to note at the 10 minute mark (No pun intended 😉) the sound gets a bit crackly when demonstrating the finished product. As a thought I see you have the ex601 expansion card (604N clone). Don’t these cards have Denise DIP sockets? So why not have the RGB2HDMI connected to this socket? Just a thought, as I use mine with the Indivision ECS scandoubler. Albeit it’s a VGA analogue signal. But still a nice picture.
@10MARC
@10MARC 2 года назад
My Mic was acting up, and I cut the crackle where I could. Looks like I need a new one! Good point... The ex601 does have a socket there... Is that for an actual Denise? Interesting thought...

@cullmaster7361 2 года назад
@@10MARC on the Indivision (Individual Computers) 604N. Jens mentions you can actually fit an A500 Denise chip in that socket, although it’s not necessary. As the ECS scandoubler also has to access the Denise. So to get around this that DIP socket (Like on the EX601) is used for the Indivision ECS scandoubler with VGA output. Do recognise not everyone will own the A603, 604N or EX601. But food for thought 👍🏻

First I want to say I love your videos. I have no problems with my RGB2HDMI together with Furia in my Danish A600 with OS3.1. Have not turned anything off in Furiatune. It is the red PCB with the latest software from spring 2021 However, have a question as I am struggling to find an SD card that my Furia will accept with OS3.2. I have tried Sandisk, Transcend, Kingston and noname, in 2Gb, 4GB, 8GB and 16GB. Unsuccessfully. What types did anyone find that worked?

Crazy! The Furias are just Crazy! 3.2 and 3.2.1 are running pretty good on mine. The CF card I use is a 15 MBS SanDisk. Other SanDisk just don't always work. I have two new SD cards coming in Saturday that I will be trying to get working.
