Amiga - Cheap External Floppy Drives Solution | Write to ADF Images
I pick up a cheap little Gadget that allows me to have two external floppy drives on my Amiga 500, one being an unmodified PC floppy drive! I also test writing to ADF floppy images on my GOTEK.

Thanks for watching. I picked up this handy little gadget that not only allows me to use TWO external floppy drives, one can be an unmodified PC floppy drive, very handy! I also look at how you write to ADF images using the GOTEK drive.

In the past, I used the Amiga Forever software and a serial cable to make ADF images from my A500... but more recently, I found the best way to make ADFs was to throw a hundred or so blank ADF images named "001.adf", 002.adf" etc, then just firing up XCopy on my Amiga and just copying tons of disks to images. :D I also then wrote a script for my modern machine that will copy the ADF files from the SD card, look for the disk label name in the ADF/Disk boot block, and renames the file based on that name. Saves me a ton of time. :D

Nice. Must do it with the ACA500Plus, EasyADF and a CDTV CD-1411 extern diskdrive (DF0 to DF1).

I created them and downloaded them and put them back to floppy ect in the late 90s early 2000s Aminet is your friend 😊

In nearly skipped this video as I have so many to catch up on. Glad I didn't mate. This is really helpful information. Thanks so much for taking the time to record it all. This may well help me with an issue I have. Can you use this to write adf to a floppy?

Yes you can mount the adf image on the gotek and copy it to one of the external drives using XCopy or something similar.

I had the same issue with the power connector. It is a pretty big hassle for an otherwise very handy device.

do u know if the Amiga can read write 400k 800k Mac discs? also what about Dragon 32 /64 disks ?? 180k 360k and 720k too? thanx....

with the Arduino can it be used as a normal pc 1.44 meg /720k fdd too? do u know any 1 who has a workaround solution to this? i mean a drive which read writes boots all formats using Omniflop programs???? thanx....

Im interested in the Amiga's disc system (880k) and 1.76 megs? of floppy discs and images too?!!

IIRC there is a motor on signal that needs to be changed, which could be why a disk isn't detected after boot.

you can use only floppy flat cable and connect both on internal controller,without modifications,in copy of gotek and amiga diskdrive,for x-copy use

I have been using a gotek on df1:. An amiga drive does not work there for me,. The seller says it has to be a gotek. Df2: says bad because nothing is on there. This works the best for me. I cannot make two drives work successfully. And what is the issue with the power plug? I have to power externally.

There is a neat little device for WIndows PCs called ADF-Copy, which you can purchase (contact via email) as a kit from here: nickslabor.niteto.de/projekte/adf-copy/ The only other thing you need is a standard PC floppy drive. While the software is kind of buggy yet, it works good enough to be rather useful.

Do u or any1 else know if any1 has come up with an all round solution to this problem of reading Amiga discs on a pc? also to read write normal pc 720k/1.44 mb floppy drives too? thanx

So you have a gotek as df0, an amiga floppy on the gotek part of the cable and a pc floppy on the floppy part of the cable? John (ikonsgr74) is aware of the issue with the power plug as mine did the same and he is working to resolve the issue. Nice video.

Yes that's right. Also you can switch DF1 and DF2 via dip switches so when I get my DF0 switcher I can use either as DF1 :)

Can I use xcopy to move .adf file from USB into empty Amiga disk if I don't have HD in my amiga and only floppy drive and gotek?

How would you do this. I have a libs folder. I need to install on my A500. After installing 3.1.4 rom and terrible fire. Im getting the error . I have the libs folder from aminet. Can I copy it onto my A500 external floppy . Then extract it.

Can you link to that version of Xcopy with the boot menu? I do not think I have that one.

Does the pc floppy drive also work in writing like df1 with this interface? can I use it as an external reader as if it were a real amiga drive using both the workbench for formatting and writing operations and with x-copy to copy the floppy disks from df0 to df1? Ps: is it possible to connect 2 floppy pc readers as if I had 2 external readers (df1 & df2) instead of the external gotek reader? Ps2: sorry if I wrote a papyrus of questions

I think I understand what you're asking. You have 3 drives in total. The adapter allows you select which drive is DF1 and DF2 but one must be an amiga drive and the other must be a PC drive. You can read and write to and from all the drives so yes you can write to real disks or you can write to a mounted adf image on the gotek. Does that answer your questions?

@@RetroRecollections Keeping the original amiga floppy drive (df0): Inside the amiga and mount the pc reader (df1) via the interface, it is mandatory that there is also gotek or a second external amiga reader to operate the reader pc connected? I asked this further question to remove my doubts and avoid making an unnecessary shopping by taking the gotek if it is not necessary to operate the pc reader through the interface. Sorry if I send another papyrus XD

I don't believe so. If there is no third drive attached then the Amiga just won't see one.

@@RetroRecollections Sorry, maybe I'll explain myself wrong, or it's the translator's fault, I wanted to know if connecting only one unit (df1) "the pc reader without the gotek" behaves like an original external amiga reader without connecting anything else to the interface and if it works with multi-disc games so that you no longer have to change discs at least with 2-disc games Thanks for your patience :)
