In this video we take a look at the Amiga Emulator WinUAE. Create a hardfile and install Amiga OS 3.1 then update to Amiga OS 3.9 and finally install Classic Workbench 3.9.
In the next video we are going to format an 80gb hard drive and transferring this classic workbench install across to that for use in a real Amiga 1200.
If you want to try this for yourself you will need to download the following:
WinUAE - www.winuae.net
Classic Workbench 3.9 - classicwb.abime.net/classicweb/os39.htm
My setup files - www.dropbox.com/s/m7ovguzn3t07u7p/PC.zip?dl=0
Edit: the original dropbox link died so I have replaced it with the above. All files are there again accept for the check 4GB that wasn't used in the setup process. If you want it you can grab that over on aminet. I have this time included a kickstart folder with the required rtb files but you will need to add your own rom images.
You will also need to get the OS3.1 ADF files and the Amiga Kickstart files which can be purchased over at www.amigaforever.com
And Amiga OS3.9 that can be purhased at various online retailers such as www.vesalia.de/e_os39.htm
A google search may reveal other sources to obtain these files.

The best tutorial about install os on Amiga :)

I have reuploaded the dropbox link after it was brought to my attention below that the link was dead. The new link also contains a kickstarts folder with the required rtb files (they are freely available on aminet) but you will need to add your own kickstart rom images. You'll need to copy this kickstart folder to dh0:devs\ or some games won't work in WHDLoad

Hi man! Thanks for your hard work. I guess the dropbox link died again though :D

Nice effort pretty similar to my guide, I always like to see what other people do differently (if anything) as you can always learn something new :) Btw you do not need to install 3.1 before 3.9, just boot from a Workbench ADF with the CD/ISO and hardfile setup and run the installer from the 3.9 CD (it will ask you to insert LOCALE: but you just need to cancel the request and it will proceed).

Thanks for the comment. I thought it better to show the 3.1 to 3.9 so the video also helps those folks that maybe just want 3.1 or just want to upgrade to 3.9. Only takes a few minutes to install it anyway :)

That is true never thought of that, but you can never have too much useful information . Look forward to seeing the methods you use for the next bits as well, keep the vids coming mate :)

Thanks! Been looking for an overview of how to setup a drive for my A1200, liked the pace and explanations on this. I'm new to Amiga and a lot other guides seem to assume too much. I need to do similar for my A600 with IDE2SD, does the process differ much (just watched part 2 as well).

The process for a cf card is identical. For the 600 it's only slightly different depending on what kickstart roms you have which will determine the version of workbench, all be it there are workarounds. I would though recommend you get the 3.1 or even 3.1.4 roms for your 600

@@CRG I'll try and find a working Windows machine and get started then :-) I have 3.1 (40.063) on there at the moment, I had to upgrade it as my original ROM wasn't new enough to support booting from IDE (and 40.068 one A1200 but 39.106 on the other.. hmm maybe it's time to buy a ROM flasher)

@@kurbeco Any old windows machine will work find for just setting up a CF card. People practically give away old laptops and most old PCs just end up as boat anchors. Your A600 should be able to boot to HDD with its current kickstart version. Anything over kickstart 1.3 supports booting from hard drive.

Great stuff. I managed to get WB3.9 all updated with no trouble. However installing ClassicWB seems to produce no difference despite the installation being successful. The only difference is I'm on macOS running FS-UAE where some configuration options are not present in the GUI... still working on trying to get all the bells and whistles of ClassicWB but the homepage is of no use....

Thanks for the comments. You need to be sure you change the hardfile over to the classic workbench one after installing. Essentially you are copying os3.9 files across to that hardfile even though it may seem your doing it the other way, if that makes sense.

I'm sure there is a quicker way.. if you enable df1:, df2:, and/or df3:, with appropriate disks in all. then you'd have less swapping to do overall. At least, that's how i'd do it... I hate swapping floppies.. 90% of my time on Amiga hardware was "getting fit" (at least my arm was)

I wanted to try and keep this as simple as possible for people setting up a drive for the first time. But, you are absolutely correct, it is slightly faster if you enable all the drives. In fact if you look at some of my other setup videos you'll see I use all emulated drives.

Hi and thanks for your useful video ! Can you please give me a valid link to you files ? Dropbox link is dead :( Thanks a lot

I've created a new dropbox link and added a new folder for kickstarts to include the required rtb files that a lot of people miss (they are freely available on aminet too). You'll need to add your own kickstart rom images though.
