Nation 12 was a short-lived project composed of Tim Simenon, John Foxx, Kurt and Simon Rogers. They only released two 12” singles, “Remember” and “Electrofear”, but also did two tracks for Bitmap Brothers - “Brutal Deluxe”, which was used as the theme music to “Speedball 2” and “Into The Wonderful”, used on “Gods”. There was supposed to be a third 12” containing both those tracks, but it was never released. Foxx had dropped out of music-making in 1985, so it was pretty exciting for those who liked his music when this turned up. Foxx returned “properly” to recording in 1997, working with Louis Gordon and recording half a dozen albums between then and 2008. Several of the tracks they recorded (e.g. “Concrete, Bulletproof, Invisible”, “Invisible Women”, “Your Kisses Burn”, “Cities Of Light”) started out as Nation 12 tracks. The “lost” Nation 12 album finally got a release in 2005, a dozen years after N12 had ended. It’s definitely worth a listen, and you get to hear “Into The Wonderful” before it got trackered for the Amiga and ST.
Foxx was brilliant! I think that Richard Josephs arrangements for the Amiga added something, though. He managed to turn the limitations into something cool, in a fantastically style-conscious way (and it was a pretty damn new style at the time!)
Played this game to death on my Atari ST. The music is just one of the many things that was great about this game. The console versions were inferior in all aspects, including the music.
PinkSmarties72 Iirc John Foxx composed the original track (as part of the band “Nation 12”) for the album Electrofear. Richard Joseph transcribed and converted the samples and song to tracker format and probably wrote the tracker playback routine for the game.
I have discovered right now that the voices said: Into the Wonderful... I was 6-7 at that time and didn't speak much english... thought it said something about a waterfall... (facepalm)
I don't remember really playing this game at all... But I would let the intro music loop for hours 😄💙 Am sure it has influenced my music production over the years 😂
Man it really sucks first time hearing this version on this console, really wish the remastered version had classic “tunes” 😢 I own it on steam going to work hard and try and mod it if no one else does it
The DOS version comes fairly close to be honest. The only drawback about the DOS version is that the part at 1:40 was messed up since it couldn't play the choir instrument and the "Into... The Wonderful" speech sample at the same time (search Abandonia Presents: Gods Intro). However, the DOS version also supported several different sound cards. Some SoundBlaster clones only ran in AdLib mode with the game, so it sounded more horrible. The PC speaker option was the worst, sounding like a beepy mess. The MT-32 also doesn't support the choir and speech samples, but actually provided in-game music! (search Gods - Intro/Opening - (Roland MT-32) MS-DOS Game) The biggest kicker is, however, you can't use any other sound output on the DOS version if you don't install it- if run from the disk, the only available option is PC Speaker.
RAMChYLD thanks for a detailed response, I agree with what you have to say, I played this on the DOS and did not have a sound card. I think maybe the amiga had the upper hand because developers knew it had a standard hardware where as the PC had all these different sound cards and ad libs. Good response though thanks.
I played this first on a 286 with no sound card (got the game on a disk with the 286). Then out of curiosity I decided to pop it into my Pentium 166 with SoundBlaster AWE64 just to see how well it'll work. Found the setup program and changed the audio to SoundBlaster. Mind blown.
Found your videos by chance (looking for Jesus on E's demo!!) and found this.. I loved this game ONLY for the theme tune! Nation XII - John Foxx... awesome, can hear John very digitised in this...Been so long since I heard this tune... John Foxx's closest track to this on albums is The Noise, very similar. Thank you for posting so many of my favourite Amiga tunes! - off now to listen to the whole of the Odyssey demo... still have the disks here and my Trusty Amiga.. but will every disk still read?
You can play this game for free! look it up on xtdos dot com! Seriously, that website is amazing. It has most of the big PC and Amiga games from the 80s and early 90s. Everything's free to play.
Haven't gotten such reports from anyone else. This particular Gods video worked fine in an Android phone, an iPad 10.5 and Sony TV's (XF9005 aka X900F) RU-vid app
This was a hard game, last level was proper hard, luckily by that point you had a few lives to spare. Must admit it was this tune that I loved, was it Jesus Jones on the vocal ??
