The issue with Textedit and Iconedit was found - it is a problem with the new "layout.gadget" file. When replaced with the 3.2.1 version, she works full speed again! Does this 100% solve the issue? We shall see, but for now it seems to work really well. I am just putting up a video that goes over the solution now.
Having been an Amiga owner since the a1000 in 1986 I am just so pleased to learn about the modern improvements to amiga OS. It has given my machines new life and new joy to myself and my young son. Thank you to the devs and this channel for a proper review.
Couldn't agree more! It is amazing that we can still get new products and actually useful things 37 years later! I will be putting the 3.2.2 ROM and software on my Amiga 1000 this week!
Regarding building software for 68000 vs 68020+. We generally just build for plain 68000. The places where you would notice a difference are rare. The thing is the machine code is 99% the same no matter what you build for. So you may only gain 1% speed up. That is so little that it is not worth the trouble. Our focus instead goes into the overhauls which can in some situation give 10% or more speedup for all CPUs. Now there are a few places where compiling for 68020 specifically will give you great speedups but those places are more in programs that do number crunching, and not in the OS itself. And say the speedup from changing your physical cpu from 68000 to 68020 is 100%- would your really notice if say your startup time is 1% better than that.. The first rule of optimizing is to spend the effort where you get most out of it.
That's awesome, Camilla! When Personal Paint released it's "new" version a few years ago, the guy compiled a bunch of the code for the 68010, which made the software not work at all on a 68000. Honestly, he did not want to fix it since he already got paid as a subcontractor... Kinda pissed me off. Eventually he did recompile it to work on a 68000.
Hello Camilla. I understand what you are saying, but not at the expense of compatibility with the lowest common denominator architecture - in comparison to the previous version. Surely the goal is to make things sing on a 68000 system where one version of the OS has to fit all?
@@NeoMK27 I think the OS itself should remain compatible with 68000 CPU's. I totally get the need for more than a few MB of RAM to run it. I also would support software that is coded for just 68020 and above if it brought new features to the table. That should be available as a separate option of course.
Thanks for the very informative video about the new features, and especially the "gotchas" with this upgrade. Hopefully they'll fix those bugs very quickly - the TextEdit sluggishness is a major bummer. Still, it's absolutely incredible that the Amiga is still getting OS updates in 2023!
So that’s why I always loose my custom startup-sequence even if it claims it will back it up… thanks for pointing this out, Doug. Guess a lot of people have come across this “bug”…
Yep. I did not notice it until the upgrade from 3.21 to 3.22. it's a very real thing and it seems like it would be super easy to fix. I've notified some members of the team about it and hopefully they will patch that installer.
Adding a comment long after this episode was created. Doug I just really enjoyed seeing you go through AmigaVision. It came with my A500 in 1990 and I had I had no idea how to use it. I only had a single floppy drive so that was fairly limiting. I figured it was powerful but sadly I never explored it. Your video made me think holy shxx it was amazing for what it could do at that time. I have more feelings but it just revisits old wounds of C= dying. Anyway GREAT VIDEOS on AmigaVision!
Oops, my feedback on AmigaVision was supposed to be attached to your earliest 2 part episodes 4 years ago. Sorry for the confusion! Not sure how I messed that up.
a very informative video. I have 3.2 on my A1200 at the moment but last night I burned the new ROM's (Hi and Lo) on two 27C400 using my GQ-4x4 EPROM Burner. Planing to upgrade to 3.2.2 tonight but I'll have to make sure that my Indivision AGA settings don't get overwritten or worse lost because right now the display is working great on my VGA monitor on desktop mode as well in games.
One particular point of contention when I bought 3.2, is the retailer stuck the serial on a loose piece of paper between the case and plastic wrap, which I obviously lost, and only realized some time later I needed by the time 3.2.1 rolled around. Since I'm not on principle going to buy it again, I'm now doomed to ask friends for a copy of the updates since Hyperion doesn't recognize me as a legitimate owner. I really hope the next time physical copies are made (3.3?), more effort is made to put the registration # on the cd itself, or at least actually printed on the liner sleeve.
Thanks, Doug. Invaluable... I have 3.2.1 waiting to be installed, and this calmed my concerns that I was falling behind. Looks reasonable to wait for the next minor revision.
Yesterday I used TextEdit in 3.2.2 to edit some files in WinUAE with A1200 specs. I noticed how slow it was refreshing when opening and editing text compared to Redit which I'm used to. Hopefully they can improve this and it is cool to have it part of the OS package, but for now I'm sticking to external editors!
I think the culprit was found. Layout.gadget seems to be the guilty one. If you copy layout.gadget from sys:classes/gadgets from a 3.2.1 install, it apparently works perfect again
Thanks for the comprehensive overview, Doug. Definitely the best video to date on the pros and cons of this update. I'll leave my A500 machine on 1.3, as I always will, and upgrade my A4000D to 3.2.2. One of my A1200s will receive this update and the other I'll keep original from the manufacturer. I can't help but want to keep my A4000D up with the latest and greatest stuff, because it's just so damn versatile!
I keep telling myself I will leave one of my machines on Workbench 1.3, and then I always change my mind and upgrade it anyway! Right now the only one that is locked in is my CDTV, but those new 2.35 ROMS that make it easy to use a newer OS and keep the features intact are mighty tempting!
@@10MARC I will upgrade my A1200 030 for sure when I get the time to reinstall workbench 3.1. currently only on 030 50Mhz. It's lagging in mp3 playback. It can only play at 22khz quality using Amiga amp.
@@10MARC Hehe! I hear where you're coming from. I've just got so much stuff on my A500 installed already that I don't want to risk breaking something by upgrading the OS.
I always get something out of your how to detailed vids- this time, after 2 years, i thought i had lost my os3.2 registration number (threw away the darn sticker on the wrapper without knowing!) but found it on the webstore purchase history and entered it, voila! got my 3.2.2 update better late than never.
You will find that bug if you leave the file in the and run another upgrade, like from 3.2 to 3.2.1 to 3.2.2 - It won't overwrite the startup-sequence backup file, so if you had made changes, then you lost them
The A600 everybody ran it down - it's so cool. I wish it had aga or the vampires gave it that capability (Ithink you get RTG). But even though youre running hires in what seems like monochrome it looks so awesome. I wish there was a drop in chip that givrs Hires and decent colour pallet no flicker that looks as nice as yours just with a 256/4096/65526 colours. With a CPU boost etc. But the A600 I had one I loved it
Not really Monochrome - it's just the 8 color palette I chose. I think it looks kind of nice. A PiStorm under $100 gives it a great speed boost and RTG graphics. The Vampire for the A600 has not been available for a long time, but I hear they are working on a new one
@@10MARC A ROM Burner comes in handy indeed. I just plowed through the EPROM's I had on the shelf and its like they are all NFG. That's a problem when you buy these old ROM's. Not a big deal I ordered more ROM's which can be returned it they prove to be NFG so I will go through all of them when they come in. I will burn ROM's for All my Amiga's. I use my burner at work from time to time and I do have a big project to backup the FW on my old temp controllers so it will come in handy I just have to check the ROM's those old controllers used as I may have them here already but for that purpose I just need to read and save the ROM Files.
@@77slevins_video_channel it seems like a lot of people still use old EEPROM burners from the late 80's and early 90's. I have a more modern one that a friend gave me, but I need to use it with Linux apparently and have not gotten around to configuring it.
@@77slevins_video_channel I use a CQ-4X4 with an ADP-054 adaptor board to program 27C400 EPROMS and others as well. I also have all the adaptor boards that was made for it at the time I purchased the unit. Sourcing EPROM's is a PITA as many are just recycled so you can buy a bunch and have some fail. You will need a UV Eraser Box to erase the EPROMs and because sometimes you may experience read/write/verify failures. Sometimes you get really lucky and have no issues other times not so much. Unfortunately, most sellers are found in China but even the stuff you find in your own country comes out of China. Just make sure you can return stuff and avoid sellers who do not accept returns and even then, it's a pain. Once you have a confirmed working set your good to go for the long haul unless you do not want to erase an EPROM then you need more. Even getting programmed EPROMs from sellers is not a guaranty you're getting good ones which is why I started burning my own.
@10marc thanks you so much for helping the community with your awesome videos!! I'm a little late to the 3.2.2 party and have it finally all running on an A1000 with the ACA500+.. BUT I selected the GlowIcons at 3.2 base install and they got carried through all subsequent upgrades.. is there any way to revert that choice without a complete reinstall? ... drumroll ...
Yuppers. There is an icon in PREFS that allows you to choose your icon set! Is is called icon (something something) - I don't remember off the top of my head, but it is a simple toggle between the icon sets.
Hi Doug, I have the problem that I can't format CF cards on the PCMCIA port. He writes: couldn't acces Device. Do you have any idea what this could be? There is nothing on the internet about it. I have Kickstart 47.111.
Can you read the CF cards? You have to have the CF software and FAT drivers to do that. Once you have it, you can certainly format a card as long as it is 4GB or below. It will have an issue above that. Best bet is to format the CF card on a Windows machine using FAT ort FAT32 and see if the Amiga reads it. If you need the CF software for the Amiga, and can point you where to download it on Aminet.
@@10MARC He reads the cards. They are 4 GB cards. The drivers are all installed, CF0 in Dosdrivers, flashcarddevice in Libs etc. I formatted them in Windows with Fat32 and my A1200 also shows them and I can also write to them. But I can't format the cards with the Amiga. It writes "couldn't access device" when I try to format them. I thought the Amiga could do that.
Still on 3.1, and honestly not seeing any significant reason to update to 3.2.x. I can mount ADF's in 3.1, and I have no slowdown issues. Does 3.2.x support drives and partitions larger than 4GB? This would be a good reason for update.
Yep. It supports nice big partitions up to (and probably above) 128 GB. Lots of other nice additions too, like the ability to move Windows off screen. I have a very hard time going back to 3.1!
There might be so many ways to get 3.2 onto an Amiga. But I think the assumption is you already have something working. I have an early A600 with original kickstart of 37.299. So I don't think I can use the PCMCIA slot or a hard disk without additional drivers. I bought a 3.1 ROM chip, but it still doesn't see the CF card on the IDE port. Bought an Amiga pre-formatted CF card, but my Mac doesn't even let it be accessed saying it is unsupported. I don't have a Windows machine, so no WinUAE as that isn't supported on a Mac. From this perspective it seems even installing WB and booting from a hard disk is a real challenge. Let alone trying to get 3.2 installed. I don't have a Gotek and I only have WB 2.0 on floppy, but no install disks. I have all the disks that came with the A600 and have owned it from new since 1992. I'd love to get 3.2 on there. But a little stumped at how to proceed.
You have a few options. The easiest is getting your AmigaOS 3.2 files on your CF card in the PCMCIA adapter - no, it does not work out of the box. You need the FAT95 drivers and the cfd133.lha drivers from aminet. Mac run FS-UAE 100% fine and can be used to create images fairly easily. If that CD card is already formatted with an OS for the Amiga, then one of the many IDE to CF adapters will do the trick nicely. If you want, email me douglas(at)dctechaz(dot)com and I can get you going in the right direction.
The 3.1 kickstart should absolutely recognize (and be able to boot once it is installed) the CF card, else there might be hardware problems. I switched an old 37.299 kickstart with a 3.1 kickstart and the CF card I had prepared on a PC was booted instantly after getting not recognized before.
Did you figure out why 47.102 is shown in the about menu item instead of 47.111? I am also confused because I am booting with a physical 3.2.1 modified rom for the TF1260 ide interface. After upgrading from 3.2.1 AmigaOS to 3.2.2 I get version 47.4 exec version 47.8 and kickstart 47.102.
@@10MARC on the real amiga after booting to the OS i copied the new 3.2.2 softROM to the hard drive and then executed mumaprom "path to the softROM" my amiga rebooted showing the start-up screen of the newest ROM 3.2.2 47.111 but of course it won't boot since my hard drive is attached to the TF1260 ide. In winuae I have upgraded to 3.2.2 using 3.2.1 roms and it shows 47.102, then I changed the rom to 3.2.2 and reports 47.111 exec 47.10 wb version 47.4 as it should. Unfortunately I can't replicate the exact hardware configuration in winuae since there is no option for TF1260 expansion. :)
@@10MARC I was wondering if i can build my own modified 3.2.2 ROM modifying it to boot from the TF 1260 ide? I don't wave a EPROM burner. Would it be possible to soft kick it using the mumaprom command?
@@panagiotisnikolaosdimitrio9884 I suppose in theory that would work. It may have to start it's boot from a floppy still, or from a drive on the standard IDE channel, since it cannot see the TF1260 on startup
The insulted A500: “I have a NUMBER PAD!” Jokes aside, I might wait for the (new) bugs to be fixed before upgrading my Frankenstein-A500 (from 3.1 via the ACA-500plus). ... And I'd need a tool that converts PostScript files to PDFs before ever “upgrading” to MacOS Ventura (why should one axe that?! People STILL need it!)...
Hey Doug, is it a cumulative update? I bought 3.2 but never got around to installing it. Do I need to install 3.2 then 3.2.1 THEN 3.2.2 or can I go right from 3.2 to 3.2.2?
Why does OS 3.2.2 come compressed with Lha but to decompress it I have to get the un-Lha program from Aminet? Why does OS 3.2 and its upgrades) not have a file manager? I have to download one from Aminet as well. Shouldn't these types of files be part of the OS from the big go?
Is there a problem licensing essentially open source compression algorithms? If Hyperion can upgrade an OS, then why can't they write their own un-lha program?
Great review as always, thank you for that. One question: why is the system a little bit slower after the update (OS + ROM Update to 3.2.2)? (10374 vs 10142 Dhrystones in Sysinfo, Amiga 2000 with 68030 Accelerator Card)
Hi! Did you replace the physical kickstart to 3.2.2? Otherwise, you won’t see the new version number in about workbench, I believe? Thanks for a great video!
@@10MARC I experienced this too. I have the ACA 1221 accelerator and use its maprom command in my Startup-Sequence. I modified the command to point to the 47.111 version. After a warm reboot, the Kickstart still reported back as 47.102. In short, I had to do a cold reboot (ie turn off the Amiga) for the new ROM to be loaded.
An A600 complete in box is coming my way. Can't wait! I have to buy new licenses for iBrowse, MUI and of course AmigaOS 3.2 as I want to upgrade it. I already had the licenses for my A500/ACA500Plus. About the performance issue, was the Amiga using the A500's stock 68000 or was it using the one on the ACA500Plus or attached accelerator card? Haven't installed the update yet so I don't really know what to expect.
Nice! You will love that A600 especially if you upgrade it a bit. My 68030 card is really nice in there! Good luck finding the MUI license. I spoke to the guy a few years ago and his A3000 that generated the licenses was broken. I wish he would let the team updating MUI now either sell licenses or just release the code. I was using my ACA500+, but it was set to 7 MHz for this test. I tried it at 21 MHz and the issue remained.
@@10MARC Yeah, very happy that I found it. Original box, everything included, I couldn't resist. Just the cutest thing out there. 😍 I spoke with the developer regarding the license issue and he mentioned the broken A3000. I don't mind it too much, all I want to do is support the developers. Just for piece of mind. I'll just upgrade to 3.2.2 BTW, see what happens.
@@tfksworldoflinux MUI 5 is pretty darn good, if not a bit bloated. Being based on the "free" version means most settings cannot be saved. I should ask the old MUI developer if he would mind releasing the rights
Just order the Amiga OS 3.2x from any of our vendors - it is $50.00 - then all the other updates are free to download from Hyperion. You can have many vendors burn a new ROM just by proving you own the software. I usually pay about $10 to have my updates burned
Interesting way to look at it. I think they do a little more than grab files from Aminet and integrate them into the OS. A lot of stuff they now have integrated was written by the Devs anyways.
Well, unfortunately this update (EDIT: it turned out not the be THE update, but Indivision itself :)) did "break" my 3.2.1 A1200 system, as it seems to somehow interfere with Indivision AGA MK3. Workbench changes resolutions unexpectedly now and then the screen stuck freeze. I'll have to investigate further...
@@10MARC I though about it and will check it today but honestly it would have to be perfectly timely coincidence as it was working fine ever before. I'll check that. I also wonder if there were any changes in graphics libraries for 3.2.2. hence the way they deal with custom modes from HiGFX pack.
@@dirtriderpl I just tested the HighGFX mode on my MK3 (A4000 version) in both 256 and 8 color mode and everything is working just fine. I think we have something specific to your machine. Are you using Fblit or anything?
@@10MARC Thank you for checking on your system, this should make my analysis process bit easier, I'll open my A1200 up first to rule out the Indy becoming loose...
@@10MARC I managed to fix it. I've reseated Indy on Lisa chip twice, it stopped freezing the system but I started getting module load error 10 on startup. Then I replaced the newly created 3.2.2 Startup-Sequence file with old one, which was backed up during WB update process - and it works ! I also edited my original comment to not confuse anyone about 3.2.2. update - as t did not "break" my system in fact :) Thank you to devs for continuous updates :)
To each their own. I don't particularly agree with the creators not making money on this while Hyperion does, but that's the agreement that was made. I like 3.2.2 so much better than 3.1 I find it difficult go back and use 3.1 - that's just me though
