I don't understand what these people are fighting for. Islam is already beautiful and it gives full dignity for women. There are many privileges that women in Islam are entitled to compared to any other religions. We must look back at the history of how feminism started. The problem is that we get confused between the real teaching of Islam and cultures. There is a fine line between these two elements as they are closely intertwined with our way of life. Islam is a way of life, and culture is another. As Muslims, we need to be careful when practising Islam as it tends to be smeared with culture that sometimes can be misleading. First, the mistreatment of women. In Islam, Allah has said that He never differentiates genders. What He looks at is one's taqwa, regardless of the sexes. Both women and men have equal opportunities to go to Jannah. Both women and men will be rewarded for their good deeds and punished for wrongdoings. Women and men have equal rights to study too. In fact, it is compulsory for all Muslims- women and men. There are many more rights that women and men share. Secondly, violence towards women. Islam strongly forbids this. This is considered as sinful in Islam and Allah has said those who hurt others will be punished. Yes, there are verses in the Quran saying how men can hit their wives but there are rules on how to do it. The purpose is to educate, not to hurt and men must not injure their wives. In fact, they are obliged to protect them. If anything happens to the wives, the men will be responsible and they can be punished if they do not repent. There are many more privileges that women have in Islam as said in the Quran. You can read Surah al-Baqarah, Surah Al-Imran, Surah An-Nisa and Surah Al-Ahzab. Even there is a surah that takes after 'Women' (Surah An-Nisa). Is there any other Book that has a chapter named after women? I don't think other religions recognise the existence of women more than Islam does (I know this is controversial but you can find the differences, provided that reliable resources are referred to. Don't just wiki or google as anyone can write about Islam which can be untrue). In Islam, women have rights to get married, to get a divorce and remarry, to own properties, etc. If both work, the husband is not allowed to spend his wife's money if she doesn't permit. Her money is hers and his money is hers too. Polygamy has been smeared by the greed and lust of men and they blamed Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) for it?!! These men should know the requirements, rules and obligations that Allah has set for them if they want to practice. Allah has said men will never be just between his wives, and marrying only one might be the best for him. Not all men can practice polygamy as its conditions and responsibility are huge. One of the conditions is that the man must give equal rights to all his wives, including sexual satisfaction! But can he satisfy all his wives equally? See, Allah knows us best. In Islam, women only take care of husband's 'needs' and children. The house chore, earning for a living are upon the husband. But we, women do everything out of love and the culture views women as secondary subjects and they 'belong to the kitchen'. You see, it's the culture of men (mostly Malays, no offence) being selfish that they ignore or leave their first wife in order to remarry. And mostly, they find younger ones and usually, it gets younger and younger when it's third and fourth. They prefer virgins. But Aisyah was the only young virgin Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) married. There are many examples that can be given if space permits. There are so many things that some non-believers mislead us about women in Islam. I feel pity when seeing these people do what they are doing now. We have been so much confused between Islam and cultures because we mix these two up. There are reasons why women can't be Imams, but they still can be leaders and lead organizations. Islam doesn't stop that. Trust me, if you see how much (and tremendous) responsibilities that men have in Islam, you don't want to be equal. What we need to change is cultures, not Islam because it is already perfect on its own. The cultures always get in the way when Islamic practice is to be implemented in one's life.
I disagree with you in the point that beating of woman is not meant as beating but more like an education. Also this makes woman not equal to the men but put her on the status of a kid and you have to tell her how to behave. This is for sure NOT the way the vers can be interpreted when it comes to real equality between man and woman. As long as the men gets the right to educate the woman there will never be equality EXEPT they are seriously talking eye to eye respectful. No one over the other honestly about their feeling of what their partner can do better. But not in form of education! We educate kids. With our partners we have discussion and that is respect.
No religion is perfect. And verses are often misinterpreted or seen out of context. There is so much nonsense in the Bible that noone follows unless they are idiots. This is only a problem for the foolish fundamentalists. Don't let a patriarchal society interpret the meaning!

I agree that we don't need these western labels like feminism for women's rights and liberalism for getting out of stupid cultures. But we as a Muslim society should go back to Quran and sunnah to give our women the rights which are granted by Allah and remove the old cultures from our society. If you ever lived in subcontinent you will get what I'm saying. Even orthodox scholars are stating the same. Young generation is leaving Islam because they think what nonsense thier society does is what actual Islam is but that's not true, every idiotic stuff society do is out of their old cultures. She is not a beacon of hope, she is conflating two different epistemologies one in which an objective truth can be established (Islam from Allah) and one where it can't be (feminism third wave based on genders). She is a sellout in everyway but it is possible that she sees herself as advocating for Muslim women and defending them but that is a lie, she is clearly trying to normalize the two with another with the phraseology she is using and the emphasis she is placing on feminism. Someone also commented that she said "They do not depend on men for their humanity" - what a dumb statement. What if a man said "I don't depend on women for my humanity." What does humanity mean in the context that both men and women are separated from one another? It has no meaning. This is why third wave feminism throws in the towel and says we will fight for all "genders" because the epistemological beliefs are nonsense - it's foundation is nonsense that both are equal and the only way it's true is with the idea of gender as an intermediary. So when your "hero" professor Amina Wadud is making those statements, do not say her statements are Islamic but you can say she is Muslim but none of what she is advocating is Muslim.
Always remain skeptical when listening to a scholar who lead congregational prayers as a woman though it is clear in our religion that it isn’t legislated by Allah. Its one thing to be a great scholar, another thing to create a tradition that has no basis all together. Allah knows best.
She says "Islamic feminism" has greater potential in Indonesia than in the heart of the Muslim world (Middle East). I wander if that is because southeast Asia was matriarchal since pre-Islamic days. That itself may be explained by the lesser degree of sexual dimorphism among southeast Asians than among Caucasoid peoples (which includes Middle Easterners).
And from my perspective why Indonesia more potential to accept "Islam feminism" than other country in middle east. I think because we are society who open to any influence from outside. Viewing Islam and the position of women in Islam through the lens of feminism is an exercise in futility and does a disservice to 1400 years of scholarship by the most erudite scholars of Islam (both men and women). The shari’ah is clear, and the places where there is room for interpretation has already been well established. We certainly don’t need Western, secular, liberal, postmodern or existential paradigms to help us.

The Hadith says, " Don't prohibit the women from coming to the masjid, but there homes are better for them." While I applaud the sisters efforts and talents given her by Allah, I disagree that feminism can assist in addressing the grievances of sisters. The sister brings up the post colonial liberations as if the men in these countries enjoy financial and political freedoms. Feminism can only serve to divide those family movements much like it has done with the African American civil rights movement. Islam is complete as outlined in the Qur'an and Allah will never accept any other Deen on yaum qiyam. The suffix "ism" denotes religion "feminism." The same with "chauvinism." The woman is the nucleas of the family and this the community. The nucleas of the community is the home. If shayton wanted to destroy the community it would bring her out from the home. We must continue to address grievance as families and not oppress each other. To not be divided, and not reinvent the wheel.

It’s funny that it’s mostly men who disagree with her and are quick to label her. Men have no idea the depth of the angst and pain they cause women. They don’t see the psychological warfare and damage. They don’t see their bias nor do they even care to listen and acknowledge what women say. You can’t even entertain the idea that there might be some truth to what she’s saying. Islam is perfect but humans aren’t. Humans still have to interpret, interact and understand the texts, but those people were overwhelmingly men and they also have their own biases. Islamic scholarship was written through patriarchal lenses. Allah swt has made certain things concerning women very clear but any time there’s room for interpretation, men have used it to hide, restrict, and demean women. By Allah on judgement day I will ask for full justice against all the men who have used religion to make life infinitely harder for me and women as a whole. From the worst injustices, to the smallest sexist comments that roll off your tongues that made women feel inferior and worthless, I want justice. When I say you, I mean men and their enablers. You go on living your life not even looking behind you to see the destruction you always leave behind. Since you won’t listen o us or even see us as full human beings, I leave it all to Allah.
