Traditionally, the Amish have opened their corn fields using a combination of corn binder and knife but we see here an ingenious mini horse drawn power sickle. Able to cut 2 rows at a time to clear the edges of fields, the cut stalks will be picked up later either by hand or by a hay head on a silage chopper.

Great video! I enjoy seeing the Amish farming techniques. I respect the Amish work ethic and dedication to faith and family. They closer resemble how my forefathers lived than I do.

Great to see. And it also takes good horse to walk straight into the 'jungle' with the motor humming behind him.

Marvellous! Thank-you! Frank knows his work so well. I love the extra weight over the pony wheel: fine tuning adjustment! To Our Father The Glory!

I’m sure the next model will be weighted differently! 🙂

Glad to see they found a job that Frank can handle with his bad leg.

That's a pretty good idea for opening a corn field. I remember my boss sending me out to open fields by hand. He liked keeping us busy. Thanks for sharing the video.

Love your videos. The motor was running and he wasn't cutting anything on the was in. Maybe running the gas out to keep the carb clean? How ofter do the blades need sharpening? Thanks for making these videos I know it can't be easy.

Beautiful horse how docile yet strong , but why the mix of ancient and modern, a motor mower why not a motor tractor , but mine is not to reason why .

It’s a choice they’ve made in how to farm. They all have input and agree to live that way. Too much labor saving tends to weaken families and communities due to an abundance of leisure time. It makes sense to those that choose to live this way. “More power to them”. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Greatly appreciated.

I find it interesting that he used a sickle bar mower to cut the stalks. But I guess you use what you own to get the job done.

It is a specialized field opener used with one horse. There is a one horse field opening binder that is often used also. The stalks here will be picked up by a hay head on a silage processor. The bundles from an opening binder have to be picked up by hand. This sickle bar is made for opening fields with less labor involved.
