We grew up calling the Pistachio Salad "Watergate Salad" --- I grew up in north-west Illinois, and this was totally a staple at every potluck, Thanksgiving and picnic. Edit I should've listed past @21:12 before commenting. 🤣 I once asked why it was called Watergate Salad and my mom's reply was, "Because it's full of nuts."

Yep! I came just to reply about Watergate salad. Though my family has altered the recipe as the years have gone by to make it thicker and more marshmallowy. I grew up in California but my family comes from the Midwest.

That Midwestern Mom cracks me up with the "Minnesota salads that aren't really salads." I'm in the South and we also love to create "salads" that have no relation to health or any dish containing lettuce & tomatos. 😂

I was born Amish in Ohio so these recipes are familiar to me. My father was born in Holmes county. It's a beautiful area. I love the food. p.s. I'm not Amish anymore
@lethfuil
@lethfuil 3 месяца назад
That's a thing I've always wondered. How does one get out of being Amish? (NOT in an "escape, or any other negative kind of sense in any direction!! I just don't know how to word it better, I'm not a native english speaker, nor am I from/in the US.) I mean, isn't it hard to get a job, a place to live etc, if you're basically "new" to the "outside" society? I'm probably ignorant here, but I am really curious. 😅
@user-sq1er1bt8l
@user-sq1er1bt8l 2 месяца назад
Escape is the right word in many cases. There are some known places for people to go to to get help from other ex Amish to get social security cards, jobs, cars, etc. Some wing it on their own and succeed, or don't. Being Amish is safe for some but for others it can be oppressive. Often the family will not see you again if you leave. People in all religions decide what they can live with and how they want to live every day.

My mom’s scalloped potatoes aren’t precooked and made in one casserole pan. She slices potatoes that are peeled and layer them in a casserole with dots of butter and spoons of flour. Finish with milk over top. Place in 350 degree oven. Bake, stirring occasionally, until potatoes are done and sauce is thickened. She adds chopped ham.

We have Amish friends in Holmes County, OH. It's been a minute since I've been there. Der Dutchman is good. Another good restaurant is Yoder's and a good little Amish marketplace is Hershbergers. If you can catch one of their yard sales it's pretty sweet!!! On anoyher note, I went to an estate sale this weekend and scored a 1942 The American Woman's Cookbook... I am so stoked! I cannot not wait to cook this book!!! She had TONS of saved recipes form newspapers and such AND handwritten recipes from the 40's and 50's and 60's... I first took all those out as they were compromising the binding but it is in very good condition anyway. I will save the clipped reciped elsewhere. I got a whole box of books (about 35 books for $1 each).

just found your video on my feed...it brought back alot of memories. I have met Maudie and her husband on many occasions and have had meals at her home. Her daughter does the meals now, and if I'm not mistaken she lives near Walnut creek. If you get back down that way again, there is a second cookbook from maudie that you might enjoy too. the sugar in the pistachio pudding is for the whipping cream to add some sweetness. I will add a tablespoon of sour cream for a little tang, and sometimes a drop or two of green food color...and yes i'm addicted to cookbook old and new..thx marie from canada

If you like honey I suggest getting some Australian varieties. The flowers the bees get pollen from don't exist anywhere else so each honey tastes different. Keep in mind shipping is very expensive so I'd buy a few to make it worthwhile. Honey never expires so you don't need to worry about that.

I don't think people realize the effort it takes to research and create shows. I do a live radio show every week on Wednesday and except for time constraints, I don't have to worry about editing the way you do. And since it's an established NPR radio station, I didn't have to worry about an audience or tech support. You had to teach yourself how to edit film, put together a script, etc. Writing a show might be the hardest part. I've said it before - you are a natural on camera and the way you relate to people is incredible. You have the same problem that radio hosts have: you have an audience, but you don't see them, don't know how they're reacting, etc. You're hopefully writing a show that you yourself would enjoy watching. My former program director called it an audience of one. It may be a lot of ONE PEOPLE but it's still true. Because you don't have an audience's applause to listen to, here it is, my ovation to you. Hopefully you'll keep up the good work, so long as you enjoy doing it.

Omg, Anna, that's Ground Beef Grand Style!! My family has made that for years and years. My weird grandma makes that and she makes scalloped potatoes with that same method, but she puts a cream of mushroom, milk, and velveeta sauce over the top. I also always want corn or peas with the ground beef Grand style, I tend to mix them in for a crunchy bite. I have found when using big biscuits, I need to flip them over half way through. I make it in a big skillet that can go in the oven, I make every dish a one pot dish, cuz I hate doing dishes. Glad you liked it though! I sent you the link about it last month. Grandma got the recipe from a magazine, maybe 60 years ago now.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Marsha Adams had a book and series on tv ( no internet) called Amish Cooking. What I liked about it was baking and so many recipes, like buttermilk pie or blackberry roll, were without eggs. I was a vegetarian cook. She was really “gilding the lily” in that show. ( I got that terminology from her show.

We live very close to Holmes County Ohio. I know the owners of Heini’s - wonderful family and amazing cheese! Love having Amish country so close! ❤

I like that you “had to collect yourself” , I laughed and laughed because I do the very same thing when I open those cans of biscuits ! The hamburger casserole reminds me of one I used out of a Fannie Farmer book that DID use mushrooms. I’ll put in the Ketchup, henceforth. I’ll have to give those scalloped potatoes a try, they looked so yummy. Thanks, so much!

Glad I’m not the only one who is startled by exploding biscuit tubes! 😂

Hi everyone, Robin Hood flour in the US had a recall and so is no longer available in the US. Canada still produces Robin Hood Flour. Hope this answers your question Jim Mexico

We make the pistachio salad every year for Thanksgiving and we do it with the Cool whip and no nuts but colored marshmallows.

This is eerie. Last night I watched a "documentary" on Hulu about the witches of Holmes County. Then I hop on RU-vid this morning to this. 😂😂

That Midwestern Mom made the pistachio salad before it’s called Watergate Salad. Very common at the potlucks here in the Midwest.

I have a Watkin’s Company cookbook from 1938. My sister got it when my mom passed away. it’s a shame it’s in really bad shape.

Omg....I just made the pistachio pudding an hour ago. Was I channelling you? Lol. I used cool whip, pumpkin seeds, pineapple, marshmallows, and pistachio pudding mix. I had this a lot as a kid. Yumm.

as an australian these kinds of "watergate salads" have always intrigued me ! people here would definitely freak out at the sight of this but idk it seems pretty tasty to me, i do really like a pudding or a mousse though so that might be why. i'm definitely going to try this pistachio recipe out !
