Hi. I used my friend lava box the past weekend. It was great but first time a lightening it my hand hair was gone. The after about 10 minutes the hose where it connects to lavabox got melted and actually slid off. I was not there and my wife said that the flame was coming out the hose. I managed to cut and clean the metal end cap and press it back on the hose. With allot of effort I got the hose back on the piece that connects to hose. Not sure why this happened but I think that connecting screw needs to be tight. I love the box but will buy one and home they change to the quick connect. Can it be changed with quick connect hose connector?

I like the flame of the Lava Box. Both seem expensive, but I'd pay a little more for sourced and made in the USA. Lava Box!

I questioned both until I meet a guy on the trail that used ceramic wood with the ignik. Hands down the nicer of the two. The side vents just help defuse the whole can look. It’s time lava box start stepping up with US made version.

I think people need to keep in mind if a usa made product is going to be competitive with an imported product, then the usa product will always need to simpler or less refined. Remember by supporting US manufacturing you will make sure that we keep some of that capacity and innovation stateside, which is important since none of these product ideas are developed overseas, just copied/stolen later.

Great review. Before your I saw your review, I thought I'd get the Ignik FireCan. After the review, I went with the Lavabox for three reasons. 1. Bigger Flame/More Heat, 2. You can cook with it (with the over/under apparatus).(You can't with the Ignik), and 3. Made in USA/Not made in China.

Negative. I added a 20 PSI regulator and it doesn't make a difference. It's the quick connect attached to the Firecan that regulates how much propane is fed into the burner. If you drill that jet out you'll get double the flame output with the existing 5 psi regulator.

Thanks for another informative vid. I've got both. IMO though, I prefer the smaller, refined fire of the Ignik because in reality when will you ever need a 4-5 ft flame? The smaller flame still puts out a lot of heat, even more so when you add fire rocks or ceramic logs which give it a more campfire feel. Though as you say, its up to you. Aloha brother

Same here and same conclusion. Love to support a mom and pop but the lava box is more fiddley and puts insane/super sketchy amounts of heat directly onto the radiator hose. The external supply line on the ignik quick connect transfers nearly no heat to the hose.

Honestly if you are in an area where woodfires are banned but propane can be used, the Ignik would be the safer bet. IMO.

The Ignik may be made of China. However, Ignik is out of Bainbridge WA, USA. They have a great Warranty program for the Ignik. They don’t claim lifetime warranty but it’s pretty close. For large fires I get the other guy. I have my Ignik and it’s great for groups of 2-4. The newer model I have can be used as a grill for cooking and it works great. Plus if you’re drinking and having a good time it’s easy to shut down or light up. The other guy looks to be more dangerous if there is wind and a fire ban and you’re in a state park. Love my Ignik so far!

Thanks for this. Never heard of the Lava box before this. This put me over the top for the Ignik. It’s just the two of us, we don’t need to burn down a forest. Looks like everything could store within the Ignik box too, space is a premium for Fulltime RVers.

I was deciding between the two as well. Ultimately I got the Ignik Firecan. Namely because I got it for 50% off at REI for a total of $99. IMO at that price it couldn't be beat. Yes the Lavabox is a small business, made in the USA, probably built better and puts out a ton more BTU but it would have been over twice the price for was is essentially a novelty luxury item. I just couldn't justify the additional expense even though I wanted to support Lavabox. It didn't help that I wanted it for a trip and the Lavabox was OOS when I was looking. I do think the Firecan has a few features which make it much more user friendly. The integrated feet, propane quick disconnect, and side holes radiate a little heat to your legs/feet. The flame on the Firecan itself is a bit mundane and sterile looking, again just flames coming out of a metal pipe. I added some ceramic wood logs from Amazon to help diffuse the flame a bit. It created a much more natural flame and the flame is diffused and larger because of it. I think that's my biggest con with the Firecan, they should have included lava rocks at that price. You can now purchase their own branded stones which is a more recent "accessory". IMO you need to get some form of lava rock or diffuser with the Firecan. At $99 the Firecan was a no brainer and I love the purchase at that price point.
@BrianWatersOutdoors

Good choice for the price. Can’t beat $100 for the Ignik. I’ll need to look into finding some ceramic logs. I’ve only seen the large fireplace size logs.

Firecan for me all day, looks nicer, like the burner better, integrated feet, don’t have to buy accessories, IMO that is too much flame on the Lavabox, I’m mostly looking for ambience in the summer months, not heat, during cold months there is typically no burn bans so I would just do a wood fire instead. If you were going to roast marshmallows or hotdogs though the Firecan probably wouldn’t be a good choice as the flame is low and narrow. If you put ceramic logs or lava rocks in it the flame might be higher on it.

Hi Camil. Honestly, it’s a toss up. They both have their pros and cons and they balance each other out. I use both now. The Lavabox for sure puts out more heat if that is what you need the most. The Ignik puts out a different type of flame that I think is just nicer looking.

If that’s the minimum setting on the lava box I’d be worried that it’s not safe in dry California forests. The flame seems to touch the ground with wind, whereas the ignik sits lower in the can

Tough call. Like the made in USA. But like the built in legs and quick release and side vents as I’d guess they help widen the heat area. Would appreciate your thoughts after using the ignik on your trip this week. 2 questions are: 1. Does it put out sufficient heat to stay warm for 5-6 people in 40-50° weather? If not - what do you think are it’s limits? 2. Which would you pick?
@BrianWatersOutdoors
@BrianWatersOutdoors 2 года назад
It is a tough call. For sure though neither give off enough heat in my opinion for 5 people. Maybe 2 people if you are close enough. I tend to prefer the Lavabox over Ignik, but they really are both good options.
