I sent off my forks and shock to Aaron at All Moto Performance. AMP does a lot of work on XTrainer suspension and they have a good reputation in the XTrainer community.
I talked to Aaron about my riding style and how stock the suspension was behaving and what my hopes were for the tuned suspension.
I went with the Lucky Cartridge kit with AMP’s custom valving. Also, the stock spring with the preload all the way out still has about 10mm of preload. Aaron installed one of his springs which is shorter than stock. This allows more adjustment of the preload.
The rear was re-valved and resprung for my weight and Aaron also installed a new piston as well as upgrade the seal head as they are prone to failure.
My initial thoughts? Awesome. I only have one ride on the new suspension but the feel when riding faster sections is night and day. The chatter/skipping I had on the rear when climbing faster sections with roots and rocks, gone. The only adjustments I have made so far was setting the rear rider sag to +/-100mm.

With that type of riding area and as slow as you are going the stock suspension should be just fine

I almost have the exact same suspension setup on my 2017 Xtrainer. I also installed the MX Teck Lucky insert last year, and it transformed the forks. I don't know what a "pro" level suspension is supposed to feel like, but the difference between stock, and MX Tech is 3 different levels of performance. Just yesterday though, after sending my stock Olle shock out for service, I was told it's thrashed and may only last a little while longer with all new seals. The interior of the shock reservoir and body is beyond salvageable. It doesn't leak but was definitely having issues during rides. Some noise and bottomed real easily. So I bit the bullet, and ordered the Sachs XT-R shock from BetaUSA yesterday. I ordered it one inch lower, with the spring for my weight, hoping it comes in a week or so. $1390 . Supposedly a big performance difference. The trails I have here in CT are similar to what you ride, rocks, fallen branches, roots, climbs, and the suspension needs to feel safe. My riding speed/pace is nearly identical to yours, but I have to stand a LOT more or my spine would never forgive me LOL.

Thanks for the info. I'd be interested to hear how you like your new shock. Since this video I have installed a Cogent Dynamics Pro Shock as I am friends with the owner and he was looking to possibly develop a shock for the XT. It feels even better than the reworked unit from AMP. I would like to switch back the the AMP unit and see how it feels now that I have a bunch of time on the Cogent unit. I have also started standing a lot more since getting this bike. Makes everything much easer unless it gets really Gnar. Toph

@@C3Enduro I have two solid long rides (100+ miles) on the new XT-R Beta shock and I love it. I've only bottomed it out once, and I was riding too fast for the "dip" in the trail LOL. Actually i think I bottomed the skid instead, CLUNK. But the rest of the ride it was excellent. I always felt like the rear wheel was eating the rocks and ledge step-ups better that the stock shock did. In contact with the ground, instead of the typical loss of contact I would get occasionally with the OE Olle shock. I feel like I have no need to upgrade or modify the suspension any further. I've been riding faster than my normal pace through the last couple years, and I don't feel like I'm on the edge of losing control. The stock suspension was easily overwhelmed over 20mph, and the I went with AMP and it was a big deal. Then I went with an AMP modified cartridge and got a small degree of improvement. When I bought the early Christmas present last year (Luck), I installed the MX Tech insert and it was a big deal. Compression and rebound (but especially compression behavior) is improved. Buying the XT-R shock was basically me giving up on the stock Olle R16V shock because I know it is a smaller bodied shock and had limits on modification and behavior. The new shock was worth it.

@@ow-my-achilles1106 That’s awesome. Your reporting the same feeling I was getting from the stock shock. Loss of contact, especially on climbs. It was almost gone with the upgrades AMO/Ollie shock and is gone with the cogent unit that’s in there now. I plan on swapping the shocks and riding this weekend to see if I can tell what the cogent is doing better than the Ollie. I think bottoming once in a while on bug hits/g-outs isn’t a bad thing. Let’s you know your using the full stroke. I rarely bottom mine. Probably need to remove some preload. The AMP/Lucky front end was well worth the $$ IMO. Tracks well and doesn’t get deflected as bad as stock. Thanks for the conversation! Toph

What is your bar clamp/ bar pad / brush guard setup?

I have Enduro Engineering brush guards with BRP bar clamp mounts. Bar pad came with the Astra Handel bars. I like the Enduro Engineering guards ok. I have the Cycras on my KLX and like those as well.

How much do you weigh? I find the stock suspension to be fine, but that’s probably due to my weight

Hey Sarah, I am about 165-170 with gear. At first the suspension felt fine for me and I wanted to get a feel for the bike before doing anything to it. When I got more comfortable and the speeds increased, that's were I found the suspension could be improved. I ride mostly harder enduro as you can tell from the videos but if I get the speeds up in the low 20's I would get deflected off of rocks and roots quite a bit. The Lucky inserts made a world of difference. I am now testing a custom shock from @Cogent Dynamcs an it has been awesome as well. Cheers

Sarah if you ride another bike with decent suspension (enought to get used to it not just a ride around for 5 min) you will realize how old school the Xtrainer suspension is. It is more like suspension off of a TTR trail bike or Honda XR than a modern enduro specific ride. The suspension is barely adequate at best IMHO.
