There was no smoke. But the smell was all over the Shack. I was very scared and immediately turned everything off.
I opened my Power Amplifier R-140 to explore its insides and to show to a specialist online.
Fortunately, Ham Radio works also by low power and even QRP, especially when the good antenna and the active Sun help! ;-)

That is a very impressive amp, an interview with the builder would be a worthwhile video. Something to think about. I hope you get repaired and back in operation soon. Hello from Arizona, USA.

Hello. I worked as a soldier at the R-140 X ZIL 131 radio station for two years, 1986-1988. . This radio was a durable construction. In winter weather -15 degrees below zero, blue flames flew from the HV source and it lasted. The final stage was very durable. I have nostalgia for R-140 :-). Power amplifiers are bought in the Czech Republic. Regards Mike.

@timdbl7804
@timdbl7804 Год назад
@@YLRaisa It depends on several things: Capacitance value of capacitors, voltage applied, and the value of any bleed resistors...... You need to be certain that the capacitors have discharged before touching anything. Also, the electrolytic capacitors can also self re-charge, to some extent, even with the power supply off..... Maybe it is best to leave the repair to an engineer with experience of high-voltage......

Hello Raisa. When a resistor burns, it is because another associated component such as a capacitor, an inductance or the valve itself has a short circuit. The fault seems more to be in the cathode-grid circuit, otherwise if it had been in high voltage the RF choke of the board would have burned. It doesn't seem like a big fault and it's a terrific amp. Be careful with the high voltages inside are several kilovolts. I hope you fix it soon and get back on the air. 73 of ea1axt from Spain.

Hi! Thanks for comment. Yes, the tube was fault.. It is already fixed - the specialist came and replaced the tube (and resistor). Of course I waited one day before I opened it :-) it is enaugh?

So that was a 'Resistor'? It looked like a Diode to me. Always something to learn in Radio Comms and Electronics. ✌️
@6JM6tube
@6JM6tube Год назад
@@YLRaisa If it is more than enough.The reason is that the electrolytic capacitors of the power supply, even if the amplifier is disconnected, remain charged (it is their mission) for this high-value drain resistors are added in parallel (500Kohm..10Mohm) that slowly discharge them in fractions of mA, actually in a couple of hours there would be no danger, but you have done very well👌I am glad that it is already fixed and with the new valve full of power👍👍. My congratulations. 73 de ea1axt.
@6JM6tube
@6JM6tube Год назад
@@garynewton1263 Hello, well it looks like a carbon propeller resistance of about 2 dissipation watts. The valve has had an internal leak or short circuit and burned it. The diodes in these cases tend to explode due to their ceramic coating similar to that of transistors and integrated circuits. Greetings from ea1axt, 73

@@6JM6tube Yes that makes sense. Since I started out in Radcomms in the early 80s circuits were using modern components. The video she posted in the woods with the antenna and tuning device was enjoyable. Be careful of the capacitors as well. They age and can fry or burn as well. I would suggest you make a list of the capacitors that are used along with many photographs of the amp so as to mark the components location and values. Do you have a schematic of the amp? How old is it? My understanding is that Russian operators would design and build their own equipment. That is what I grew up understanding. Too many of the hams in the U.S. are appliance operators, my being one of them and not ashamed to say so. With this in mind, I am going to guess that the amp will probably say 'Made in Russia' or similar. Let me know if I am wrong. Where to get parts is what I am wondering. In this current situation, I doubt you have a Radio Shack store to go to. How do you get parts? That could be a subject for another video. How do you all obtain parts these days? Trade among yourselves? Make your own? Find old radios (as some of us do here) and beg, borrow and steel parts? I don't think I am the only one wondering these things. I hope you get it fixed and soon.
@YLRaisa
@YLRaisa Год назад
of course it is made in Russia. It is a old sowjet TX, which was rebuilt to an Ham radio Amp by RK3AD, who made Hunderds of that amps (R140). The tune GU43B is still available in Russia. No big problem to buy it.

Please, please, please: Don't change a thing until you exactly know what you do. Even a wrong resistor (i.e. with more inductivity) can get you or your amp in trouble...and half an ampere at these voltages isn't fun anymore. Is the tube a GU43b or GU34b ? As other said already, be careful of high voltages.The high voltage is applied to the gray metal part of the tube and can stay there for hours (may be days) after the switching off of the power supply. Also be care about medium voltages also. That tetrodes tube should have up to 400 volts to other parts of the tube (grid). Likely you burned the resistor due to too high grid current due to over driving the amp or perhaps unmatched antenna or a combination of both. 73 !

At least your amplifier broke with a failure. I have one that I can’t use because I am allergic to cats, the amplifier works just fine, but I can’t be in the same room with it unless it is in a bag, and it clearly not work with no air flow. Also have watched 3 of your videos so far, wondering what antenna you have, will go watch more to see if you shared your antenna

Dangerous gear there, Raisa. @ 3'07" the burned item is a choke comprising a high value resistor with a fine winding on it which looks as though it has shorted to the copper pad below. I can't see if there is any damage to the component to the left which is sleeved.
@YLRaisa
@YLRaisa Год назад
I switched of and waited for many hours before opening it. Because I am aware of capacitors... The tube was the fault. 73! Raisa

@@YLRaisa OK, Raisa, I saw you had a spare output valve at the beginning.....you probably got a high plate current reading on a meter....I remember collecting the parts for a power amp with a couple of 4CX250B valves many years ago....73

that's a proper beast of an amplifier and I very much doubt the tube is blown. more likely a capacitor which has done caused a few knock on effect. but nevermind it's a good excuse to go for a nice long walk somewhere are for some qrp action
